Janet Nelson Berger, Casting Director on Prestige TV Programs, Dies at 87
Image
Janet Nelson Berger, who began her career as a secretary at CBS in the mid-1950s before rising to become a production assistant and casting director in an era when few women held managerial roles in network television, has died. She was 87.

Berger died July 22 at her home in Los Angeles of pneumonia and complications from a stroke, her husband, Emmy-winning producer Robert “Buzz” Berger, said.

Janet Berger worked often for producer Herbert Brodkin, first at CBS and later at his independent company, Plautus Productions.

She contributed to 19 episodes of the acclaimed CBS anthology program Playhouse 90 — including a live, color adaptation by George Balanchine of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in 1958 — and to a 1959 production of Hamlet for CBS’ DuPont Show of the Month. (Both were directed by Ralph Nelson.)

Later, she contributed to such socially conscious 1960s drama series as The Defenders, The Doctors and the Nurses and For the People.

New Paramount Execs Address CBS News Independence; Ombudsman Will Be “A Transparency Vehicle, Not An Oversight Vehicle”
Image
Updated, with FCC comments: New Paramount CEO David Ellison said that he had “no interest” in wading “into the political spectrum” with CBS News, as he and other executives addressed the independence of the news division under the new company.

At a press conference with media reporters on Thursday, Ellison did not directly answer whether the company would refrain from meddling in 60 Minutes, which was a target of Donald Trump as Skydance and Paramount sought regulatory approval of the transaction.

Ellison noted that he started Thursday by meeting with staffers at CBS News and then 60 Minutes, “which hopefully speaks to how important of a part of an organization I believe they are. I’ll also say it is literally day one. I am not going to say we have every single answer.”

Also at the press conference was Redbird founder and managing partner Gerry Cardinale, the top investor in the new company,...

Voa Chief Ousted After Rejecting Long-Distance Demotion
Edward R. Murrow
Voice of America director Michael Abramowitz has been notified that his employment will end on August 31 after he rejected a reassignment to manage the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in Greenville, North Carolina—a move he called illegal in a filing to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. A letter from U.S. Agency for Global Media (Usagm) senior adviser John Zadrozny cited “failure to accept directed geographic reassignment” as cause for termination and gave Abramowitz 30 days’ notice.

Abramowitz already sued Usagm and senior adviser Kari Lake in March, arguing that Donald Trump’s executive order to dismantle the agency violated the Administrative Procedure Act and that any attempt to remove a Voa director requires approval from the International Broadcasting Advisory Board, which the administration dismissed in January. His attorneys told the court the firing “comes in the middle of litigation about defendants’ willingness to follow the law,...

Prince Harry & Meghan: Striking Similarities To Edward VIII & Wallis
Image
This weekend in his Daily Headline News, royal commentator Neil Sean looked at how history repeats itself with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Well, as time went by, the striking similarities between Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson became more obvious, especially when it comes to Netflix. Read on for an interesting dive into history and modern-day events.

Taking A Similar Path

As Sean often says on his show, “nothing’s really new.” He explained that ever since silent movies, “all the ideas were done and they’re redone even today.” In his opinion that also applies to the paths taken the former King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, and the current Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Sean highlighted that the “box office is always gold if you get the right people.” The principle of public appeal and marketability was as true...

Late-Night TV Is On The Precipice After CBS Axes Stephen Colbert; Insiders Lament “End Of An Era”
Image
Stephen Colbert was struggling to get through the opening line of his telecast on Thursday, announcing that his turn behind the desk of The Late Show was coming to an end, as well as the fact that CBS was ignominiously axing its storied late-night franchise altogether.

His wife, Evie Colbert, who was watching the taping, was visibly emotional, according to audience members, a group that erupted into boos as the comedian revealed the news that left the fans of his show, the 200 people that work on it and the wider late-night community in a state of shock.

Colbert was told of the cancelation on Wednesday and informed his staff ahead of the taping.

It was a stunning reversal from May when George Cheeks, Co-CEO Paramount Global and President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS, told Deadline that he “really likes our hand” at 11:30pm. Cheeks, who came up in...

James Gunn doesn’t see the need for more origin stories
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
In Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn gave a short prologue on Peter Quill’s introduction into the vastness of space beyond Earth. Afterwards, we are conveyed the backstory of all the characters throughout the movies as discovered when the plot progresses. Now that Gunn is restarting a new continuity of the DC universe with Superman, Gunn has the task of reintroducing Kal-El and Clark Kent from his world to audiences. However, in Superman, not only do we have him already established, but there are already more superheroes publicly acknowledged and inhabiting Metropolis.

In a new interview with The Times, Gunn explains why he doesn’t want to have another origin story for the big blue boy scout. “There are three things I don’t ever need to see again in a superhero movie,” Gunn starts. Then, he continues,

I don’t need to see pearls in a...

Paramount’s Trump Lawsuit Settlement: Curtain Call for the First Amendment? (Guest Column)
Image
A few weeks before the announcement in the wee hours of July 1 that Paramount Global and CBS were settling a widely derided lawsuit brought by Donald Trump against “60 Minutes” for $16 million, George Clooney took his final bow on Broadway as Edward R. Murrow, the famed CBS journalist he portrayed in “Good Night, and Good Luck.” The sold-out play chronicles the conflict between Murrow and the red-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy and underscores the esteemed position that CBS News has long held in broadcast journalism. From Walter Cronkite’s reporting on the Vietnam War to publishing the first photos of the abuses by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib, CBS News has a proud history of public service when it comes to checking government wrongdoing.

The crown jewel in the CBS News lineup is “60 Minutes,” the forum for Mike Wallace’s interview with tobacco industry whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand and interviews with...

TV Ratings: NBA Finals Fall, Tony Awards Surge
Image
The TV audience for the 2025 NBA Finals has fallen off considerably over the first two games — which is no surprise given the relatively small home markets of the two competing teams. Opposite game two of the Finals, the Tony Awards posted multi-year highs, and CNN’s live airing of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck on Saturday also drew a sizable audience.

Through the first two games between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, the NBA Finals is averaging about 8.84 million viewers on ABC — 8.91 for the June 5 opener and 8.76 million for Sunday’s second game. That’s down about 24 percent from the first two games last year, which averaged 11.65 million viewers (and involved two big-market teams, the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks).

The game one figure is the smallest on record for the Finals’ normal window in late May and early June (though it does rank ahead...

Tony Awards 2025: George Clooney’s Broadway Debut Got Upstaged by His Twins’ Obsessions
Image
After decades of dominating Hollywood, George Clooney made his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck. His fantastic portrayal even earned him a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play. The 2025 Tony Awards were supposed to be his night. However, on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall, it wasn’t just his performance, his headline-worthy return to silver hair, or his star status that stole the spotlight. It was his 8-year-old twins.

In a red carpet interview with E! News, Clooney revealed that while he’s been spending his evenings onstage playing news legend Edward R. Murrow, his twins have their eyes set on a different kind of entertainment: Taylor Swift and the cast of Wicked– so much so that they couldn’t care less about Hollywood legends either.

CBS News’ Scott Pelley Sends Bold Message About Donald Trump Lawsuit
Image
Former CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley sent a bold message about Donald Trump‘s lawsuit against the network during an appearance on 60 Minutes—and the journalist didn’t mince words with his blunt declaration. On Saturday, June 7, Pelley, 67, sat down with Anderson Cooper, 58, to speak about the lawsuit targeting CBS’ parent company, Paramount Global. The interview came right after CNN aired a live broadcast of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney. In the production, Clooney portrays the late journalist Edward R. Murrow, who famously challenged Senator Joseph McCarthy’s tactics during the Red Scare. “The most important thing is to have the courage to speak, to not let fear permeate the country so that everyone suddenly becomes silent,” Pelley told Cooper. “If you have the courage to speak, we are saved. If you fall silent, the country is doomed,” the journalist continued “It is...

CBS News’ Scott Pelley: Settlement With Trump Would be ‘Very Damaging’ to CBS and Paramount
Image
CBS News veteran Scott Pelley sounded the alarm about the possibility of Paramount Global reaching a settlement in the unprecedented lawsuit filed against CBS and “60 Minutes” last year by President Donald Trump.

Pelley took part Saturday night in an interview with CNN anchor and fellow “60 Minutes” correspondent Anderson Cooper that followed CNN’s live telecast of the Broadway play “Good Night, and Good Luck.” The play recounts the landmark moment in 1954 when CBS News legend Edward R. Murrow challenged the sleazy smear tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy at the height of the anti-Communist scare.

“The most important thing is to have the courage to speak, to not let fear permeate the country so that everyone suddenly becomes silent,” Pelley, who formerly held Murrow’s seat as a “CBS Evening News” anchor, said of the role that journalism plays in democracy.

“If you have the courage to speak, we are saved.

‘60 Minutes’ Correspondent Scott Pelley Says Trump Lawsuit Settlement & Apology Would Be “Very Damaging” To Reputation Of CBS And Paramount
Image
Scott Pelley said that a settlement of Donald Trump’s lawsuit would be “very damaging” to the reputation CBS and Paramount, while the 60 Minutes correspondent also defended a recent commencement speech where he warned of the threats to freedom of speech.

Appearing on CNN’s post show following the live telecast of Good Night, And Good Luck, Pelley sat down down fellow 60 Minutes correspondent and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

“If there is a settlement, and as part of a settlement, there’s an apology, how damaging is that to CBS?”

“It will be very damaging to CBS, to Paramount, to the reputation of those companies,” Pelley said. “I think many of the law firms that made deals with the White House are at this very moment regretting it. That doesn’t look like their finest hour.”

As CBS-parent Paramount Global seeks Trump administration approval of its merger with Skydance, company...

George Clooney Gushes Over ER Co-Star Noah Wyle on 'The Pitt'
Image
2025's excellent medical drama, The Pitt, has proved to be an impactful show that revitalized the genre's popularity beyond expectations. It was realistic and raw in how it mirrors the experience of real-life healthcare workers. It was also an emotional ride with compelling characters who kept us hooked for weeks on their 15-hour shift at the ER of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. All the performances were staggering, but it was Noah Wyle's which stood out the most. His performance as Dr. Michael Robinavitch, a.k.a. Robby is one of the year's best, and his co-star in the classic show ER, Hollywood (and now Broadway) legend George Clooney, agrees with this.

As reported by TV Insider, the O Brother, Where Art Thou? and From Dusk Till Dawn star appeared on the show Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote his current Broadway hit, Good Night, and Good Luck.

CNN’s Live ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Telecast Spurs Special Coverage

CNN will likely never telecast a live Super Bowl or Oscars. But the network aims to build a primetime event out of a live telecast of the Broadway play “Good Night, and Good Luck” on Saturday at 7 p.m., filling in the schedule before and after with special coverage tied to the show’s story of journalists who stand up to power.

Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown will lead special live coverage for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s telecast, which will mark a first for Broadway. According to the network, a live Broadway show has never been broadcast in this fashion. CNN plans to air the show, which stars George Clooney and tells the story of CBS News journalist Edward R. Murrow as he covers the divisive tactics of Senator Joseph McCarthy, without commercial interruption, and will stream the program on CNN.com without requiring a subscription.

How George Clooney’s ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Is Preparing to Go Live on CNN
Image
George Clooney’s play Good Night, and Good Luck is set to air live on CNN this Saturday, in a move meant to spread the play’s timely message and raise the profile of Broadway.

The idea for the live broadcast originated with Clooney, who is starring in the production as legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, and co-wrote the play. The play follows Murrow as he pursues reporting exposing the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and stands up to pushback from McCarthy as well as CBS station heads.

“One of the reasons that George came to Broadway with this show is because the story is deeply, deeply meaningful to him,” said Sue Wagner, one of the lead producers. “It was really important to him to stand on stage every night and say to people, ‘This isn’t about power unchecked. It’s about ‘What are you prepared to do? How...

How Noah Wyle's ER Co-Star George Clooney Feels About The Pitt
Image
Everyone can finally relax — George Clooney likes "The Pitt."

During an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on June 3, Clooney — who's nominated for a Tony Award for "Good Night and Good Luck," the 2025 Broadway stage adaptation of his 2005 film about Edward R. Murrow — Clooney, while discussing both his time on "ER" and the strangely named sitcom that preceded it, "E/R," brought up his colleague and friend Noah Wyle's hit HBO Max series "The Pitt."

"Have you guys seen that show?" Clooney asked the audience, who cheered with approval. "It's so good, and you know, I have to say, we've been really dear friends since the show, since we did the pilot of the show," he added warmly, speaking about Wyle. "He is just the most honorable, talented young man, I get to say, because I'm an old man. And I cannot be happier for his success on this show.

‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ Could Tour And “Might” Go To London, George Clooney Tells Seth Meyers
Image
George Clooney dropped by Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night to plug this Saturday’s live broadcast of his Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck when he let slip what could be a bit of good news for the West End: The play might end in London.

“There’s going to be a roadshow for it,” Clooney told Meyers, “and I think it might end up in London, but it won’t be the same thing as what we’re doing now.” No more hints were given (watch the interview below).

A representative for the production confirmed the accuracy of Clooney’s comments.

Good Night, and Good Luck, written by Clooney and Grant Heslov based on their 2005 film, began previews at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on March 12, opened April 3 and closes with the June 8 matinee ahead of that night’s Tony Awards. The play has been...

Video: George Clooney Talks Performance Jitters and Flubbing His Lines Onstage
Image
Ahead of the CNN presentation of Good Night, and Good Luck this Saturday, Tony Award-nominee George Clooney stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss the record-breaking production. The show recalls the true story of famed journalist Edward R. Murrow, who bravely took on McCarthyism in the 1950s. "He gave these very famous speeches [that] you know if you studied journalism," Clooney explained. However, despite being a seasoned actor and a bona fide movie star, he went on to admit that there are still times he flubs his line on stage. "We gave away a thousand tickets to students [on] two different nights, and they all know these speeches. I screw them up sometimes and they let you know. I'll say one word wrong and...

Conan O’Brien is in talks to appear on Late Night with Seth Meyers – a feat that would mean all three previous hosts of the NBC late-night show will have made an appearance.

“I’ve spoken to this person, and I think it will happen soon. They’ve expressed their desire to do it. There’s only been four of us that have done this on NBC and I’m lucky enough to have had [David] Letterman on and I’ve been lucky enough to have had [Jimmy] Fallon on. I would love to have Conan back,” he said.

“60 Minutes” correspondent Leslie Stahl and CNN contributor Scott Jennings are among the coterie of journalists, politicians and legal experts participating in “Breaking The Deadlock,” a new series from PBS and Wgbh that examines how the nation might react to a fictional crisis scenario, such as the President of the United States asking officials to investigate a political detractor.

The episode is the second in the series, which takes its cues from the Fred Friendly Seminars, a series of televised symposia orchestrated by the former president of CBS News and production partner with the venerable Edward R. Murrow in the early days of news programming on television. Friendly and his wife, Ruth, helped produce more than 100 seminars broadcast on PBS over the course of more than two decades. The seminars covered everything from medical care to nanotechnology to ethical decisions made the during a host of high-pressure scenario.

Ralph Fiennes to play President Snow in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

Ralph Fiennes, coming off his Oscar-nominated turn in Conclave, has taken a major role in Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping. He will play President Coriolanus Snow, the authoritarian leader of Panem. The role was played as an older man by Donald Sutherland in the 2010s Hunger Games films and as a young man by Tom Blyth in prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This will of course be Fiennes' second time playing the iconic villain from a massively popular young adult book franchise; he previously played Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies. "We wanted to honor Donald Sutherland by having one of this generation’s greatest actors play President Snow 24 years before Katniss Everdeen entered the arena," producer Nina Jacobson said in a statement announcing Fiennes' casting.

2025 Tony Awards nominations: All the snubs and surprises!
Image
The 2025 Tony Awards nominations were unveiled Thursday morning, with the musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending leading the way with 10 bids apiece in a loaded season on the boards.

There was plenty of expected good news for the likes of Audra McDonald (landing her record 11th nomination for Gypsy), Mia Farrow (scoring the first major peer-group awards nomination of her storied career for The Roommate), and fellow first-timers Nicole Scherzinger (Sunset Boulevard), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray), and Sadie Sink (John Proctor Is the Villain), it wasn't all bows and bouquets for stage set.

But with 42 musicals, plays, and revivals eligible — six more productions than last season — and several legitimate contenders vying for limited slots, there were more than a few notable snubs to go along with a handful of surprises that defied the odds. Here's our breakdown of the biggies.

‘60 Minutes’ Goes on Alert: How the News Program Is Grappling With Paramount and Trump
Image
Did Donald Trump break “60 Minutes”?

Scott Pelley on Sunday night smashed the “in case of emergency” glass — something “60 Minutes” staffers hope they never have to do.

In a rare move that put the inner workings of “60 Minutes” on full display to the public at large, Pelley on Sunday night discussed last week’s surprise exit of Bill Owens — just the third executive producer in the program’s history and its guiding light since taking the role in 2019 — and the pressure the staff felt was being put on the long-running newsmagazine by Paramount Global, parent of CBS News. His appearance teed up one of the most dramatic examples in recent memory of media conglomerates finding themselves at odds with news divisions that are supposed to be independent at a time when they are worried about meddling from the Trump administration.

“Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways. None of our stories has been blocked,...

Has ’60 Minutes’ Run Out of Time? Shari Redstone’s Painful Predicament
Image
That ticking noise that begins every 60 Minutes segment? Turns out that’s not a stopwatch. It’s a time bomb.

At least that’s how it’s sounding lately, like the illustrious citadel of American broadcast journalism is on the brink of blowing up. Last night, in the latest shudder suggesting an imminent explosion, correspondent Scott Pelley ended the show with a “Last Minute” segment that all but declared open rebellion against 60 Minutes’ corporate overlords at Paramount and raised a fist in solidarity with longtime executive producer Bill Owens, who just days earlier had bolted CBS in protest over what he called editorial meddling by management.

“No one here is happy about it,” Pelley informed viewers, perched on a stool before a backdrop of the program’s iconic ticking timepiece. “But in resigning, Bill proved one thing — he was the right person to lead 60 Minutes all along.”

George Clooney Receives Sardi’s Portrait for Broadway Debut in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’
Image
George Clooney received his Sardi’s caricature Thursday after making his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck this spring.

When asked to sign his portrait, Clooney quipped: “You got it. Brad Pitt.”

Clooney also joked about the difference in hair color between the portrait, which features his natural gray hair, and his current hair, which is dyed black for his role as Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck.

In addition to making his Broadway acting debut, Clooney co-wrote Good Night, and Good Luck with Grant Heslov after the two had penned the 2005 film version. The play, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on April 3, follows Murrow and the staff of CBS as he takes aim at Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Sardi’s, a well-known restaurant in the theater district, typically honors select Broadway stars by presenting them with caricatures that are then featured in the restaurant for decades to come.

Megyn Kelly Delivers 11-Minute Rant About George Clooney After He Blasts Her for Not Being a Journalist: ‘Are Hollywood Roles Getting a Little Hard to Come by as You Age?’
Image
George Clooney recently stuck up for himself against Megyn Kelly, but the former Fox News anchor did not take his criticism lightly.

During Clooney’s appearance alongside Patti LuPone on Variety‘s Broadway Actors on Actors, LuPone noted that Clooney has been labeled “a communist” and “a fascist” for his political activism over the years. Clooney, for his part, made no apologies about speaking “truth to power,” adding that “I didn’t give up my constitutional rights when I became an actor.”

“I don’t care much in terms of what they say,” Clooney said. “You see Megyn Kelly, who’s come out and said I’m not a journalist. I didn’t say I was a journalist.”

LuPone interjected: “Neither is she. ”

He continued, “I’ve at least been to Darfur and Sudan and the Congo and been shot at to try to get stories out. I’m not...

‘60 Minutes’ Chief Bill Owens Quits, Citing Interference From Paramount
Image
The executive producer of CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” Bill Owens, only the third in the venerable newsmagazine’s history, said he will leave his job, citing an increasing lack of ability “to make independent decisions based on what was right for ’60 Minutes,’ right for the audience” as parent company Paramount Global tries to move past a lawsuit filed against CBS News by President Donald Trump and secure its future in a merger with Skydance Media.

“Over the past months, it has also become clear that I would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it,” Owens told staffers in a memo Tuesday, adding: “So, having defended this show — and what we stand for — from every angle, over time with everything I could, I am stepping aside so the show can move forward.” Owens made his announcement during an emotional Tuesday meeting with “60 Minutes” staffers,...
