The golfing world and those who cover it struggled this weekend to make sense of the death of Grayson Murray, a 30-year old PGA player who died by suicide after dropping out of an underway tournament, the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Veteran broadcaster Jim Nantz had to announce Murray’s death live on air for CBS. He was overcome with emotion while talking.
PGA Tour golfer Peter Malnati also became emotional when speaking about Murray.
Malnati and Murray played in the same group during the first two rounds of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. Murray then withdrew on Friday, claiming illness.
“This is going to be really hard,” Malnati said in an interview with CBS’ Amanda Balionis during the broadcast. “I didn’t know Grayson all that well, but I spent the last two days with him. It’s so funny, we get so worked up out here...

Taylor Swift celebrated Travis Kelce’s Super Bowl win with several long embraces on the field at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night.
Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night to win Super Bowl Lviii in Las Vegas.
During the presentation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, Swift was seen standing next to Kelce’s mom, Donna, as he spoke with CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz.
She was seen smiling and clapping as the Chiefs’ tight end first busted into a few lines of Elvis Presley’s song “Viva Las Vegas” before then leading the crowd in the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right.”
After that rousing speech, Swift greeted Kelce with a long hug and several kisses on the field, as she did two weeks ago when the Chiefs won the AFC Championship Game.

The first half of Super Bowl Lviii proved so fruitless for the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs that it drove their star tight end Travis Kelce to throw a sideline tantrum (nearly knocking over coach Andy Reid in the process), and so boring for the Allegiant Stadium crowd in Vegas that it brought his girlfriend Taylor Swift to chug a beer on the jumbotron. Swift was joined in her luxury suite (estimated cost: $2.5 million) by pals Ice Spice and Blake Lively as well as the Kelce family. The lone first-half touchdown...

Two shirtless football fans were taken away in handcuffs after running onto the field during Super Bowl Lviii in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The two men, who appeared shirtless with illegible writing displayed on their torsos and backs, sprinted onto the football field at Allegiant Stadium with approximately five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs are currently facing off for the ultimate prize, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Several security officials quickly ran onto the field, tackling both individuals to the ground before walking them out of the stadium.
The two men were later captured on video in the back, being escorted by a handful of police officers in handcuffs. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for more information, and to find out if the two men are facing any charges.

President Joe Biden will not be sitting down for an interview with CBS News prior to the Super Bowl on Feb. 11.
The network said that the White House declined CBS News’ request for an interview with the President.
This marks the second consecutive year that Biden will not sit down for a conversation with the network hosting the big game.
Last year, the Biden administration declined Fox News’ request for an interview and instead issued a statement explaining that the president would chat with Fox Soul ahead of the game. That interview fell through when, according to the White House, parent company Fox Corp. asked that it be canceled.
President Biden did sit down for an interview in the first two years of his term, speaking with CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell in 2021 and NBC News’ Lester Holt in 2022. It is not clear who CBS News had in mind for this year’s game.

An interview with the U.S. President in the hours before the Super Bowl has become a tradition in recent decades. Now that custom seems to be in danger of dying out.
President Joe Biden will not take part in an exchange during the pre-game festivities leading up to CBS’ broadcast of Super Bowl Lviii on February 11, according to CBS News. The Paramount Global news operation had been in discussions with the White House in recent weeks. Details about which correspondent might have been eyed for the assignment could not be learned, but the CBS News offer was believed to have been for a 15-minute interview, three or four minutes of which would have aired during the network’s pre-game coverage.
This will mark the second year in a row that President Biden has turned down the opportunity, which typically draws an audience of tens of millions, even in the hours before kickoff.

Taylor Swift has once again made an impact with her presence at an NFL game, and this time caught the attention of CBS viewers at the Kansas City Chiefs versus Buffalo Bills matchup on Sunday.
In the broadcast, CBS announcer Tony Romo mistakenly labeled Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce‘s relationship with Swift and sent her fans into a frenzy.
As the Chiefs faced a third-and-long, quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a 23-yard pass to Kelce, which resulted in the first down. Romo and play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz expressed their amazement at the play.
“That’s amazing,” Romo exclaimed as the cameras showed Swift in the audience. “This is intercepted by most people, as you see Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience – er, I’m sorry.”
“Not yet,” Nantz jokingly responded.

What the Fox is happening with the annual Super Bowl interview with President Joe Biden?
The White House on Friday night appeared to squelch any hope of the pre-game ritual taking place, noting that it had not signed off on any exchange between the president and any representative of Fox Corp., the media company with the broadcast network showing the Big Game.

The White House on Friday night appeared to squelch any hope of the pre-game ritual taking place, noting that it had not signed off on any exchange between the president and any representative of Fox Corp., the media company with the broadcast network showing the Big Game.

When Super Bowl Lvii arrives on Sunday, Fox is prepared to broadcast hours and hours of the event, with all of the usual trappings — except, perhaps, one.
With just three days to go before the Kansas City Chiefs square off against the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the White House has yet to commit to the traditional interview between the President of the United States and the news division of the media company broadcasting the gridiron classic, potentially shunning a conversation that would be seen by one of TV’s biggest audiences. Fox News attached no conditions to the exchange according to a person familiar with the matter, which has been a staple of the event (more or less) since President Barack Obama started doing it in 2009.
A final decision has yet to be announced, and there is still a chance the conversation could take place.

Of all the major American sports, basketball is the one where personality shines through the easiest. There’s no helmet, no facemask. Any one player only has to share the court with nine others. The athleticism, the fire, and the smiles all come through. So one of the biggest challenges for any documentary filmmaker trying to make a biography of a professional basketball player is to contend with what’s already freely given.
In the world of the NBA, Stephen Curry isn’t one of the largest personalities, but he’s not a blank slate either. Watch clips from any of his Golden State Warriors’ title runs or his legendary game-winners, and you’ll see a man who isn’t afraid...

This wasn’t supposed to be Joe Buck’s first assignment for ESPN.
The veteran sports announcer raised eyebrows earlier this year by jumping from his longtime roost at Fox Sports to the Disney sports giant, where he and colleague Troy Aikman are set to host “Monday Night Football.” On Thursday afternoon, however, Buck was doing something completely different. Here he was, sitting alongside golf analyst Michael Collins on ESPN2, watching Tiger Woods on the green at the 2022 PGA Championship and talking to baseball great Ken Griffey Jr. about his golf and baseball swings.
Even though the setting is relaxed and informal, it poses a challenge for Buck. “I have to remind myself the whole time it’s not what I typically do,” he says in an interview. “I have to kind of turn off the gene that I have that wants to be on top of all the action.

Joe Biden Tells Lester Holt He’s Done A “Deep Dive” On “About Four” Potential Supreme Court Nominees
NBC News released the first clip from Lester Holt’s Super Bowl sit-down with Joe Biden, in which the president said he’s done a “deep dive” on “about four” potential Supreme Court nominees to succeed Justice Stephen Breyer.
A longer version of the interview, taped earlier Thursday in Culpepper, Va, will air as part of NBC’s pre-game show Sunday, continuing a tradition where the host network lands an interview with the sitting president.
“I think whomever I pick will get a vote from the Republican side for the following reason: I’m not looking to make an ideological choice here,” Biden said. “I am looking for someone that can replace Judge Breyer with the same kind of capacity that Judge Breyer had, with an open mind, who understands the Constitution, interprets it in a way that is consistent with the mainstream interpretation of the Constitution.”

This was an extraordinary moment of live television. As CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz was wrapping up the network’s coverage of the Memorial golf tournament’s third round, saying that “tomorrow will be fun folks,” viewers could see defending champion Jon Rahm, leader by six heading into the final round, double over during a conversation with two men, visibly upset.
As the group headed to the clubhouse, with Rahm wiping off tears and his caddy turning away the camera that followed them, Nantz, clearly stunned by what was unfolding, addressed viewers.
“What’s going on here?,” he said. “Somebody gave Jon some news. This is not good.” (Watch the video below.)
It turned out the news the tournament officials delivered to Rahm after the final hole was that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the event he was so close to winning again. It was a major blow to Rahm,...

Jim Nantz will have more time to say “Hello Friends” on CBS.
The sportscasting veteran will extend his time with CBS Sports as part of a contract renewal that will keep one of the network’s key sportscasters on board for several more years.
A CBS Sports spokesperson confirmed that Nantz, known for calling CBS’ Sunday-football package alongside Tony Romo, and for narrating both its Masters and NCAA March Madness coverage, would remain at the network following a recent negotiation. CBS Sports declined to offer specifics of the new deal. Sports Business Journal previously reported Nantz’ contract renewal.
Nantz’ pact had been slated to expire this Spring, and that had spurred questions to Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports, during a recent press conference marking the start of March Madness. McManus had said he had “no plans” to change Nantz’ status with the network following the basketball tournament.

“Paramount+ will be the leader in live sports,” CBS Entertainment Group boss George Cheeks said today in a major streaming war throw down to the likes of Olympics and Premier League home Peacock.
Coming partway through a delayed, glitchy and often repetitive corporate presentation of the March 4 launching ViacomCBS platform, Cheeks promised a plethora of sports programming from the NFL, international soccer and more.
“Bottom line everything sports fans love on CBS …all of this will be available on Paramount+,” Cheeks declared after an intro from RuPaul. For most Stateside sports fans, the big ticket is the NFL, which is in pricey play as the TV renewal rights are on the table heading towards next month.
A reality the CBS exec acknowledged in what was perhaps a case of some public negotiating.

Never bet against the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All-Time). For now, that’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. Someday, that may be Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But not on this day at Super Bowl Lv, as the underdog Tampa Bay Bucs destroyed the defending champion Chiefs by 31-9 in a game that seemed over in the first half.
A stifling Tampa Bay defense had Mahomes running for his life for much of the game, as Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles devised an attacking defense that threw Mahomes off his game. It wasn’t pretty, and Kansas City had no answers. It was an unexpected blowout of the defending champions, and as CBS announcer Jim Nantz noted, a lot of people were probably disappointed that the game turned into a rout.

It was an unexpected blowout of the defending champions, and as CBS announcer Jim Nantz noted, a lot of people were probably disappointed that the game turned into a rout.

The highly anticipated battle of the ages between 43-year-old Tom Brady and 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes didn’t exactly materialize in the first half of Super Bowl Lv.
That’s because crafty defense by Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles kept Mahomes and the potent Chiefs offense bottled up while Brady ran wild on the Chiefs.
Brady, playing for his record 7th Super Bowl ring, hooked up with old sidekick Rob Gronkowski for two touchdowns. It was the most Super Bowl touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver combo, and Gronk’s14 touchdowns moved him past Jerry Rice on the list of receiving touchdowns. The feat was made all the more remarkable by the fact that Gronkowski took off all of last season, attending the Super Bowl as a spectator.
Tampa Bay almost had a third touchdown in the first half, as running back Ronald Jones was stopped on fourth down just short of the goal line.

Super Bowl Lv starts at 6:30 p.m. Et at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by quarterback Tom Brady, for football’s — and television’s — biggest event of the year.
Festivities will kick off with country star Eric Church and R&b artist Jazmine Sullivan singing the National Anthem, while H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.” Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman will join the pregame ceremonies and recite an original poem that recognizes three honorary Super Bowl captains: Los Angeles teacher Trimaine Davis, Tampa Bay nurse Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin.
The Weeknd will headline the halftime show as the first-ever Canadian solo performer. At a recent press conference, he did not give away too many details. Given the violent thematics of smash album “After Hours,” he did note the performance will be family friendly.

As with many other aspects of Super Bowl Sunday, this year’s advertising game-within-the-game has gone through some dramatic adjustments due to Covid-19.
The annual big-tent event on February 7 should still deliver hefty financial returns for CBS, which said this week it has essentially sold out inventory for the game at a rate of $5.5 million per 30-second spot. That’s in line with last year’s Super Bowl on Fox, which reaped $600 million on that single day, according to the company.
But Super Bowl Lv in Tampa Bay, a matchup between the Tom Brady-led, hometown Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes’ defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, won’t be the usual nacho-cheese-splattered bacchanal. Social distancing and ongoing lockdowns are a far bigger factor during the fearsome second wave of coronavirus infection than when the season kicked off last September. Viewing of the game — which, if it tracks with solid playoff ratings and a down-but-better-than-expected regular season,...
