Applications for next year’s Project Involve are now open. This week we’re featuring Dear Mama… , executive produced by 2021 Project Involve Fellow Jordan Hart.

A cultural icon is someone who transcends mere talent, becoming a symbol that inspires, influences, and shapes how we understand music, art, and even ourselves. They capture the spirit of their time, reflecting social and political issues, and becoming role models and catalysts for change. Many of us have a cultural icon who inspires us.

But what happens when they die?

This idea intrigued Jordan Hart, 2021 Project Involve Creative Executive Fellow and Executive Producer of the short film Dear Mama… .

Parker Young's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Parker Young is a television and movie actor who has had a strong career almost the entire time he's been working, and it's clear that he is not looking to slow down his output anytime soon. Born on August 16, 1988, Young began his professional acting career in 2008 when he appeared in both an episode of Days of Our Lives as an unnamed delivery man and then Gingerbread Man 2: Passion of the Crust as Cornelius Entemann, the unfortunate fourth victim in the schlocky horror movie about a sentient gingerbread cookie.

After that start, Young quickly moved into more significant roles in more notable productions, primarily in television, with a few movies thrown in as well. His breakout came quite quickly, however, when he was cast as Ryan Shay in the hit series, Suburgatory. This recurring role led to several other main and supporting cast parts in some popular TV shows. Even...

Why A Million Little Things Ended, and Why We Want it Back
Image
At first glance, it may seem like ABC's A Million Little Things was a show about death — it certainly gives off this impression from the first episode. However, the popular show went on to expand from that, and many of its deeper themes soon became apparent. While never really hitting the mark with critics, with sluggish ratings barely above the 50% mark, A Million Little Things was terminally underrated.

Despite this, the show had a loyal following, and a fan base that appreciated its straightforward good qualities, even if they were plain and not put across with any special resonance that garnered acclaim. After a successful four-season run between 2018 and 2022, showrunner DJ Nash somewhat abruptly announced that the fifth season would be its last. Its loyal fans were left devastated, quickly petitioning for more.

Here's a look at why A Million Little Things ended, and why we think it should come back.

A Million Little Things Season 6? Creator Hints at Comeback for Canceled Drama
Romany Malco, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Stephanie Szostak, David Giuntoli, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, and Floriana Lima in A Million Little Things (2018)
When A Million Little Things ended its five-season run on ABC earlier this year, it seemed like the door was closed on the series for good.

Now, though, there's a chance that more episodes of the beloved drama could be produced.

Series creator DJ Nash took to X this week to respond to a fan who asked if the show is over.

"It's over. For now," he responded.

In a word? Whoa.

It's not uncommon for TV series to stage comebacks after their series finales.

In this TV climate, shows return for additional seasons years after they wrap up.

Frasier recently returned, 19 years after its series finale, for example.

There's a lot of story to mine from a comeback of A Million Little Things, which gave This Is Us a run for its money as one of the most emotional shows on TV.

We're still trying to get over A Million Little Things...

‘A Million Little Things’ Bosses Explain Why You Shouldn’t Expect a Revival Soon
Image
It’s only been a few days since the A Million Little Things series finale aired (on May 3), but chances are you’re already wondering if that was really the last time you’ll see the friend group and their loved ones. After all, there’s plenty of stuff to explore in the 15 years we didn’t see with the time jump as well as after with the group and their kids. So, what are the chances we do? “I’d love to do it. I’d love to do it. I think, not now,” creator DJ Nash tells TV Insider. “I think we’ve told the stories we need to tell, but are you asking me if, in a situation that would financially benefit this group, we could all come together and hang out again? We found a way to hang out with our friends and get paid. I love this family so much.

James Roday Rodriguez on ‘Amlt’ Finale Loss: ‘Maybe That’s the Trick We Pulled Off’
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the A Million Little Things series finale.] A Million Little Things said goodbye — to the series and Gary (James Roday Rodriguez) — in a touching finale that featured a tough decision, heartbreaking moments, and a look to the future. The drama that began with a suicide concluded with an assisted suicide, with Maggie (Allison Miller) by her husband’s side at the end. The rest of the friend group and their loved ones were gathered at Katherine’s (Grace Park) for a big dinner, laughing and telling stories about Gary, just as he’d wanted. Rodriguez, who also co-wrote the finale with creator DJ Nash, opens up about saying goodbye. The last two episodes really go hand in hand. It’s such heavy material, and Gary’s the only one trying to make people laugh consistently. James Roday Rodriguez: Well, that’s who he is, and I think he realizes how difficult...

"We Earned It": Million Little Things Season 5 Ending Death Was Planned In Season 1
Image
Content Warning: The following article contains discussions of suicide and suicidal ideation.

According to series creator DJ Nash, the devastating death in A Million Little Things was planned from the beginning. When it was announced that the ABC drama was ending after season 5, it was promised that A Million Little Things would wrap its run with a bit of heartache. The series finale delivered in that respect, as a major development involved an exploration of assisted suicide. Maggie is with the dying Gary, who has incurable lung cancer, and when the time comes, he passes away.

In an interview with TVLine after the Million Little Things ending, Nash and James Roday Rodriguez broke down the finale. In particular, when it came to Gary's death, Nash mentions that he planned the series to start with suicide and end with assisted suicide while showing the contrasting circumstances. In addition, Rodriguez talks about earning Gary's fate.

A Million Little Things Season 5 Episode 13 Review: One Big Thing
Romany Malco, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Stephanie Szostak, David Giuntoli, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, and Floriana Lima in A Million Little Things (2018)
And with that, we say goodbye to this beautiful series and what very much feels like an end of an era.

It was the most bittersweet finale, with A Million Little Things Season 5 Episode 13 giving us the expected, heartbreaking death of our beloved Gary Mendez.

But the hour also gave us a glimmer of sweetness, flashing forward 15 years so that we could see that everyone, including a handsome teenage Javi, is alright, with a full circle ending that brings a smile to your face.

After the progressive heaviness of A Million Little Things Season 5 Episode 12, it was a bit difficult to retread losing Gary, having to watch him die in front of our eyes.

But, unlike the previous installment, the humor and lightness of this episode eased the pain of losing the very heart and soul of this series as we did.

Everyone worked to give Gary a proper farewell while also honoring his wishes,...

‘A Million Little Things’ Bosses Go Deep Into Series Finale & Answer Burning Questions
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the A Million Little Things series finale.] A Million Little Things says goodbye to one from their friend group and looks ahead in the finale. The series ends with an assisted suicide, with Maggie (Allison Miller) ultimately the one by the dying Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) side when the time comes. Then it jumps forward 15 years to show the friend group happy, together, and expanding, and fittingly ends on a Bruins game, with Gary and Maggie’s son Javi in attendance with Theo, Danny, and Tyrell. Creator DJ Nash (who co-wrote the finale with Rodriguez) and showrunner Terrence Coli answer our burning questions about the series. DJ, talk about writing the finale with James. DJ Nash: Incredible. Gary is a combo platter between me and him, so it seemed fitting. So much of this last season was just beautiful gifts, whether it was getting Christopher Lloyd to come to Vancouver...

‘A Million Little Things’ Series Finale: Star James Roday Rodriguez & EPs On Gary’s Silent Goodbye, Flash-Forward, Easter Eggs & More

Spoilr Alert: The story includes details about the series finale of ABC’s A Million Little Things.

DJ Nash’s drama series A Million Little Things ended the way it started, with the death by suicide of one of the friends whose close relationship was at the heart of the show. While Jon’s suicide in the pilot came as a shock to everyone, Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) passing in tonight’s series closer had been set up, with the final season building toward it as Gary battled terminal Stage IV lung cancer.

The finale revealed that Gary had made a pact with Rome and Eddie for them to help him die “with dignity” if the pain became unbearable. No longer able to speak, Gary evoked the promise by writing “Rutledge,” the friends’ key work for helping each other’s families. Eddie and Rome both struggled with Gary’s...

A Million Little Things Season 6 Update Hinted At By Creator
Image
The creator of A Million Little Things responds to whether the show could return after season 5. Since its debut in 2018, A Million Little Things has seen a bevy of new arrivals and departures to go along with several plot twists. It seemed that, no matter what happened to the central group of friends in Boston and their families, there was always more story to tell. That possibility of an always-growing narrative seemed to be put to an end when ABC announced its decision to end the show back in November.

In an interview with TV Insider, series creator DJ Nash gave a thoughtful and hopeful answer about whether A Million Little Things could be back after season 5. Nash began by pointing out that 'you never know', explaining that he wrote the ending in a way that would leave the possibility open for a follow-up in the future. In the quote below,...

The final season of A Million Little Things may have just started, but we’re already thinking about the end — and how we’re hoping it might not be the last time we see the friend group we’ve grown to know and love the past five years. So does it leave off in such a way that a revival, spinoff, or follow-up movie would be possible? “You never know,” creator DJ Nash told TV Insider as he was gearing up to write the last scene of the series. “I definitely leave the door open to something. The way we leave the series would certainly allow for an opportunity to revisit, should we all find ourselves available.” Nash went on to share his love for the writers, cast, and crew (who stayed for the shorter final season versus taking a job with more episodes for more money). “I had a...

This deeply personal tale of the people impacted by Jon’s suicide — not only his wife and children, but best buds Eddie (David Giuntoli), Gary (James Roday Rodriguez), and Rome (Romany Malco) and the ones they love — launched two years after This Is Us made it cool to cry and has leaned into the feels ever since. A wry, emotional ensemble soap, the ABC series has explored mental and physical health, racism, sexual identity, addiction, and more. (The Emmys bestowed an honorary award on Things in 2019 for offering “television with a conscience.

‘A Million Little Things’ Creator Explains Why the Show Is Ending, Confirms Final Season Includes Multiple Deaths
Image
“A Million Little Things” has been filled with emotion since its 2018 debut — and the final season is set to follow suit.

Per the show’s official description, Season 5 kicks off with a funeral, which sees the group coming together “celebrate the life of a loved one who dies unexpectedly.” However, it won’t be the only death of the season, creator DJ Nash confirms to Variety. “Someone else passes away,” he says, careful not to give away anymore.

The show, which is rooted in Nash’s own relationships and personal experiences, stars David Giuntoli, Romany Malco, Allison Miller, Christina Moses, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Tristan Byon, Lizzy Greene and Chance Hurstfield. ABC announced the series’ end in November — a decision Nash had known for a long time.

“We’re not a hospital show where new interns can come in. We’re about a group of friends that are real...

‘A Million Little Things’ Showrunner & Creator Talk Crafting Final Season As ‘A Bookend’ To The Series; New Promo Bids Farewell
Image
A Million Little Things is bidding farewell to its audience with a parallel to the first season, as the group begins to rally around a friend who is fighting for his life after a cancer diagnosis.

During ABC‘s Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday, showrunner Terrence Coli and executive producer DJ Nash discussed how they were planning to bring the series to a close.

“It feels like a bookend,” said Coli, in reference to how the show began with Jon Dixon (played by Ron Livingston) dying by suicide in the pilot and its impact on his close friends. “The friend group is going to rally around Gary [whose cancer returned in Season 4 but only Maggie knew about it until Rome accidentally stumbled upon his secret in the season finale]. They have been there for reach other and have shown up, through all the trials and tribulations.”

Nash, who created the series and previously served as showrunner before handing it off to Coli, added that he’d had the idea for the...

A Million Little Things Season 5 Image Hints At Major Character Death
Image
A new image from A Million Little Things season 5 hints at a major character's death. Slated to be the show's final outing, the official synopsis teases that viewers will experience both joy and sadness as the show's journey comes to a conclusion. Audiences will get one last chance to witness the depths of friendship, love, and sorrow before they say goodbye to the characters that they've come to know so well. Although the summary doesn't reveal anything specific about where A Million Little Things could be headed, the use of the word "sorrow" might prove to be especially instructive.

That much is conveyed in a new photo from A Million Little Things season 5, which will debut on February 8 on ABC. The image, from TVLine, shows Maggie (Allison Miller) with a baby bump, pointing to the fact that she's moved past her fertility difficulties with Gary (James Roday Rodriguez). But the...

A Million Little Things Season 5 Shocker: Who Might Be Dying?
Romany Malco, Grace Park, James Roday Rodriguez, Stephanie Szostak, David Giuntoli, Christina Moses, Allison Miller, and Floriana Lima in A Million Little Things (2018)
A Million Little Things kicked off with a death, and it may well end with one.

TV Line shared a first-look photo for A Million Little Things Season 5, and it looks like the gang is in mourning.

Eddie, Katherine, Greta, Regina, and Maggie are present in the photo, which you can view here.

We're inclined to believe whatever happens isn't related to the four, but it will impact them enough to attend a funeral.

It does look like they're attending a funeral, and naturally, that makes us super worried about the future of some of the characters on the show.

Since we're heading into the final season, it's hard to imagine everyone making it out alive.

Drama series like to go out on dramatic terms, and more often than not, someone dies in the end to bring everyone together one last time.

"As the final season of our series unfolds,...
