I am not putting you on when I say Eastwood is still cranking out bangers in his twilight years. His latest, Juror #2, was released to primarily positive reviews. And he shot that film in his mid-90s. That’s nothing less than exceptional. However, we are not here to talk about Juror #2 today. No, we are instead spotlighting another recent effort from Eastwood. I’m talking about Cry Macho, a Western thriller he starred in and directed in 2021.

In Hollywood, some films take a long winding path to the screen. But few journeys have been as twisted – or as ironic – as that of Cry Macho, a movie that spent nearly half a century bouncing around between stars before landing in the hands of a then-91-year-old Clint Eastwood. But what’s even more surprising is that the role of the macho protagonist was once destined for none other than the former governor and action star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The announcement of his casting came in 2011, but personal circumstances forced him to back out of the project.

While the story had potential as it’s about a subject not often depicted - a macho type is wrestling with his past after he’s lost everything - it’s the execution that made this film a failure at the box office. Ill-fitting casting choices and pacing issues seem to hinder the film’s success.

Clint Eastwood owes his career to Westerns. He became a familiar face to American television viewers between 1959 and 1965 as the ramrod Rowdy Yates in the popular CBS series "Rawhide" before venturing off to Spain, where, with Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone, he helped turn the genre on its ear with the Spaghetti Western trilogy of "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." From that point forward, Eastwood in any kind of Western was a big deal at the box office, which was especially impressive considering that oaters were declining in popularity throughout the 1960s and into the '70s.

Earl Holliman, the Golden Globe-winning star of “The Rainmaker,” has died at the age of 96, according to media reports.

Holliman starred in the 1956 adaptation of the N. Richard Nash play about a spinsterish woman named Lizzie Curry, played by Katharine Hepburn, who falls in love with a con man played by Burt Lancaster who promises to bring rain to her family’s drought-stricken farm. Holliman played Jim, one of Lizzie’s brothers.

That same year, Holliman also appeared in “Forbidden Planet,” one of the earliest sci-fi film classics. Holliman, who was the last living member of the film’s cast, played the cook on the starship C-57D who humorously bonds with robot Robby when he asks the android where he can find some bourbon.

Clint Eastwood is back in the saddle (and behind the camera) for “Cry Macho,” a Western about a washed-up horse breeder who agrees to kidnap a child for his former boss. The film premiered in movie theaters on Friday, but for those who want to watch from home, “Cry Macho” is also streaming exclusively on HBO Max for the next 31 days.

Eastwood, 91, directed and produced the film in addition to playing the lead role. He first received the story nearly 40 years ago, but the timing wasn’t right, the Oscar winner said in an interview with Parade magazine. “I knew the character needed some mileage on him, so I turned it down,” he revealed.

After Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dominated the box office for two weeks in a row, it faces some competition this weekend from Cry Macho, which sees Clint Eastwood both back in the director’s chair and as leading man. Warner Bros has pushed back the release of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune from October 1 to October 22, and has moved Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho and Sopranos prequel The Many Saints Of Newark.

Dune will now avoid going one week prior to the US launch of MGM’s James Bond thriller No Time To Die on October 8.

In a minor shuffle of its fall film calendar, Warner Bros. has moved “Dune” back three weeks to now open in late October.

The studio also shifted the release dates of Clint Eastwood’s next movie “Cry Macho,” moving it up by roughly a month, and the “Sopranos” prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark” back by just one week.

“Dune” will now open Oct. 22, 2021, back from Oct. 1, and the film will play in 3-D and IMAX in theaters. “Cry Macho,” which was dated for Oct. 22, will now debut Sept. 17. And “Many Saints” will shift back into “Dune’s” previous slot, opening Oct. 1, moving back from Sept. 24.

Exclusive: Eduardo Minett is set to make his English-language feature film debut co-starring opposite Clint Eastwood in Warner Bros’ Cry Macho, which Eastwood will also direct. Natalia Traven, Dwight Yoakam, Horacio Garcia Rojas and Fernanda Urrejola are also on board. Clint Eastwood is planning to produce, direct and star in the adventure-drama “Cry Macho” for Warner Bros., sources have confirmed to Variety.

Al Ruddy and Jessica Meier are producing, along with Tim Moore and Eastwood at his Warner-based Malpaso production company. The project is based on the 1975 novel by N. Richard Nash, who wrote the script along with Nick Schneck.

The project was unveiled during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the New York Times reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to star with Ruddy producing, Brad Furman directing and plans to shoot in New Mexico. Eastwood had once before intended to star and direct, but had put it aside in favor of 1988’s “The Dead Pool,” in which he portrayed his signature Harry Callahan character.
