Scripted by the American playwright Richard Nelson and directed by the former RSC chief Roger Michell, Hyde Park on Hudson is an oddly pale companion piece to The King's Speech and made with a similar eye to the American market. It centres on a weekend that the stammering George VI (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman, an altogether less sympathetic figure than the one played by Helena Bonham Carter) spent at the family home of President Franklin D Roosevelt (Bill Murray) in New York in the summer of 1939, a few weeks before Great Britain declared war on Germany (but over two years before that conflict became global).

Hyde Park on Hudson follows the love story between American President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and Daisy (Laura Linney) amidst a weekend when the King and Queen on England are coming to stay, and we were fortunate enough to sit down and discuss the feature with director Roger Michell, ahead of the film’s February 1st release.

Michell – known predominantly for Notting Hill – discusses with us his ow personal fascination into the time of which this film is set, and how much research material was available to him. He also discusses his delight at collaborating with writer Richard Nelson and his upcoming title Le Weekend.

Laura Linney excels at playing quiet women who are secretly simmering with passion. Her latest role, with Bill Murray in Hyde Park on Hudson, is a classic example

Laura Linney isn't important. "Meh," she shrugs happily. "I'm no one. I'm not Bill [Murray, taking tea in the next room]. I'm not a tentpole of culture." A cheery pause. "People can get nervous around me but that's just a weird sense of celebrity."

Silence descends, broken only by the clacking of her bangles. "The one thing I do get is that people are surprised I'm better-looking than they think I'm going to be. There's that. And that throws me sometimes."

Is that a nice thing to be told? "It's double-edged. Every once in a while I'm like: Oh, Ok ... good. And then I'm like, well ..." People are so surprised! "Oh! You're good-looking!" Well, thanks ..."

In the flesh, Linney is formidable: very sharp, very pretty, maybe a little more blingy than you'd expect.

Roger Michell’s latest film Hyde Park on Hudson is inspired by Margaret Suckley’s (Laura Linney) quasi-incestuous, semi-affair with President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bill Murray), during the 1939 summer, when King George VI and the Queen Consort Elizabeth visited the Roosevelts’ New York, country, estate. Certainly an interesting and unique subject, especially when the exact degree of intimacy between Suckley and Roosevelt is of some debate. Michell and screenwriter Richard Nelson explore the spectrum’s more scandalous side, creating a livelier film, which is fortunate for both audiences and Mr. Roosevelt. However, the execution is disappointing, the story is neither clean nor thorough, and the 94-minute running time leaves much to be desired.

But Murray's subtly charming presence ends up being one of the stronger elements of the otherwise lightweight romance "Hyde Park on Hudson," which depicts one of the most revered United States presidents with all the substance and insight of a lukewarm cup of tea.

Hyde Park On Hudson wasn’t exactly my favourite project, but after watching the first TV spot and a completely new featurette, I definitely have to say – the movie looks great! Roger Michell (Notting Hill) returns behind the camera this year with awards contender Hyde Park on Hudson, the drama based on real events in which Bill Murray takes the lead as President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After debuting at Telluride and Tiff, the film is making its UK premiere as the centrepiece of the BFI London Film Festival this month.

We caught the first trailer and poster back in the spring, when it was renamed Hyde Park on Hudson (previously titled Hyde Park on the Hudson), and now MSN have released the UK quad poster ahead of its screening.

If you have viewed all eight seasons of Foyle's War on Netflix, as any responsible TV aficionado should have done by now, you'll know how peeved the Brits were about America's late entry into World War II.

Well, Hyde Park on Hudson chronicles how King George VI (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) of England traipsed across the Atlantic to convince Fdr and the American public to set aside their beloved isolationist stances and come to the aid of the free world and help beat up the Nazis. This, as you will learn, was accomplished with the aid of hot dogs and mustard.

But before everyone gets down to munching on America's favorite sausage, screenwriter Richard Nelson recounts what led up to this pivotal historic moment by focusing upon the "romance" Fdr (a first-rate Bill Murray) had with his sixth cousin and neighbor Margaret Suckley (Laura Linney), better known as Daisy.

Hyde Park on Hudson explores a significant but somewhat obscure moment in history when King George VI (Samuel West) pays a visit to Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Bill Murray), making him the first English monarch ever to grace the United States with his presence. If only that historic meeting were the focus of the film. Instead, the story spends too much time fretting over the illicit affair between President Roosevelt and his distant cousin Daisy Suckley (Laura Linney), the character who narrates the proceedings but whom the script fails miserably to make us care about.

Daisy acts aware of her dowdiness, but her admirable humility barely registers as a saving grace. Audience members might start to wonder, like members of Fdr’s staff, what she’s doing there at all. She doesn’t appear personally invested in the historical goings-on,...

There's never a dull moment when Bill Murray's around. He was in fine form at the Toronto Film Festival press conference for his new film, "Hyde Park on Hudson," in which he plays Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The funnyman was joined by co-stars Laura Linney and Olivia Williams, as well as director Roger Michell and writer Richard Nelson. All had great insights about the film, but we'll get to those closer to the movie's release date (December 21, 2012).

I have no idea where to even begin with Hyde Park on Hudson. I don't even know why it's called Hyde Park on Hudson. It should be called Roosevelt's Love Shack or Fdr's Gettin' Some. I say this because, despite initial appearances, the point of the film seems to be a justification for infidelity as we learn of President Franklin Roosevelt's intimate transgressions over a period of time spent with his sixth generation cousin. Confusion surrounds the film as we're initially led to believe it's going to focus on the visit from the King and Queen of England to Roosevelt's titular, upstate New York getaway in June of 1939. That visit, however, turns into a hot dog-eating sideshow compared to the exploration of Fdr's sexual exploits. All considered, I have no idea what I'm supposed to take away from any of this, and after this review I won't likely ever consider it again.

Bill Murray is a man of many talents who has lately struggled to find the right outlet for them. The latest example, "Hyde Park on Hudson," finds Murray in a tame, mannered costume drama delivering his best Fdr impression. The actor's pathos and deadpan skills are buried in the material, which also suffers from a continuous lack of inspiration. It's high-minded entertainment with low ambition. Taking cues from playwright Richard Nelson's screenplay, director Roger Michell ("Notting Hill") follows a curious tangent of Fdr's presidency, when during the summer of 1939 the president left the White House to spend time at his family home in upstate New York. While there, he invites the King and Queen of England (Samuel West and Olivia Coleman) to pay him a visit to discuss Britain's mounting pressure to join the war against Germany. The meeting arrives around the movie's midpoint and contains ample entertainment value outside of the context.

We won’t be seeing it until December 7th, and it’s unlikely to be the kind of film that will ultimately bombard you with ads, so the trailer release for Hyde Park on Hudson better hope it stirs something deep if it’s going to be remembered. It looks a bit odd frankly, even among films with Presidents and Queens, but it stars many of my favorites, and I can imagine that director Roger Michell can make something interesting out of it.

Who would have ever thought back in the 80's that we'd see comedian Bill Murray play President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but he pulls it off brilliantly. Murray is one of my favorite actors working today, and this looks like it will be a great film. 

The film was directed by Roger Michell (Morning Glory,Notting Hill) from a script written by Richard Nelson and the story takes place in June 1939, and recounts the love affair between the president and his distant cousin, Margaret Stuckley. At the same time the president is hosting the British King and Queen at his upstate New York cottage, in the first-ever visit to America by a member of the United Kingdom monarchy.

It seemed like a curious choice when Bill Murray was cast as the late Us President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the adaptation of Hyde Park On Hudson, but now that the first trailer has hit Yahoo!, the movie looks to be Murray's finest work in years.

Based on the 2009 British radio play by Richard Nelson (who adapted the screenplay), Hyde Park on Hudson takes place during a weekend in 1939 when Roosevelt was visited by the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I, played by Samuel West and Olivia Colman respectively — the first ever visit to America by reigning British royalty. (And, coincidentally, the same monarchs depicted in the Oscar–winning The King's Speech.)
