Sundance Review: Ricky is a Portrait of a Tender Man in a Harsh World
Image
Ricky (Stephen James) has only been out of prison a few weeks, but the real world has already become too much for him. His parole officer Joanne (Sheryl Lee Ralph) keeps showing up at his house to berate him. His mother Winsome (Simbi Kali) treats him like he’s already a lost cause. He just lost a job that was supposed to be guaranteed by childhood friend Terrence (Sean Nelson). Fifteen years ago he convinced Ricky to do a robbery with him; when the heat came down on them, Terrence split and Ricky was left with the consequences. And having spent so much of his life in prison, he doesn’t know how to be around people anymore. He struggles to speak and look others in the eye. He’s a strong guy with muscles and an imposing stature, but inside it’s like he’s still that scared teenager...

‘Ricky’ Review: A Sensitive Stephan James Steadies Frenetic Debut About Recidivism
Image
In Barry Jenkins’ oneiric adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, Stephan James plays Fonny, an incarcerated sculptor wrongly accused of a crime. He enchants from the moment we see him on screen: When his character talks to his girlfriend (KiKi Layne) from behind a glass wall, James communicates the severity of carceral rupture with his anxiously clasped hands and melancholic gaze. The actor’s expressive eyes, often emphasized by furrowed brows, tell stories when words fail his character.

Language often fails Ricky, the protagonist of Rashad Frett’s meaningful but uneven feature debut. The 30-year-old Hartford native, portrayed with soulful precision by James, has just been released from prison. Life on the outside is a challenging obstacle course and Ricky, who was incarcerated at 15, understandably struggles to navigate it. He suffers from anxiety and Ptsd, as relayed through scenes of fitful sleep and muted sound as he enters states of agita.

‘Ricky’ Review: Powerful Sundance Drama About a Young Man Just Out of Prison Navigating a World of Booby Traps Establishes Rashad Frett as a Born Filmmaker
Image
A dozen years ago, at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, I sat in the Eccles Theatre and watched “Fruitvale” (later entitled “Fruitvale Station”), Ryan Coogler’s true-life drama about Oscar Grant, a young man who was fatally shot by Bay Area police, even though he had done nothing. By the time the film ended, everyone in the audience knew that we’d seen something straight-up extraordinary, and that Coogler was a born filmmaker. When he got up on stage, he was ebullient — grateful for the response, but you could also see, as his words poured forth, that he was already bursting with the stories he wanted to tell. This, for a viewer (or critic), is the Sundance dream: to go into a film you know nothing about, and two hours later you’ve witnessed a filmmaker — maybe a great one — being born.

I felt a similar set of emotions today when I sat,...

This Underrated Vampire Horror Movie Doubles as a Brutal Apocalypse Film
Image
There have been vampire flicks and apocalypse movies since the dawn of cinema. The two horror staples have mixed before, creating their own subgenre with notable works like 1964s The Last Man on Earth and 2007s I Am Legend. However, there is one such movie that often escapes notice: Jim Mickles 2010 Americana-flavored Stake Land. Following a modern cowboy, Mister (Nick Damici), and his pseudo-son, Martin (Connor Paolo), the two traverse the back roads of small-town America in the wake of a vampire outbreak. As they head north in their ramshackle car, they meet a nun, Sister (Kelly McGillis), a pregnant woman, Belle (Danielle Harris), and a former marine, Willie (Sean Nelson). This piecemeal family has no great destination in mind or revenge plot to enact. Stake Land's loose narrative allows Mickle to play with his setting and world. No aesthetic choice is made haphazardly in Stake Land; the nostalgic rural communities,...

Netflix Shines Light On 1994 As Great Year For Film; What Got Left On Cutting Room Floor
Image
Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Speed, Once Were Warriors, and Ang Lee...

A ‘Beef’ win for limited series would continue this Emmy semi-tradition
Image
The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Laurence Fishburne
Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell will return to Broadway this spring in a revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo, lead producers Jeffrey Richards, Steve Traxler and Stephanie P. McClelland announced today.

Directed by frequent Mamet collaborator Neil Pepe, American Buffalo will begin previews in March 2020 with an official opening on Tuesday, April 14. The theater has not been announced.

Fishburne, last on Broadway in 2008’s one-man play Thurgood, will play the character Donny. Rockwell, returning to Broadway after 2014’s Fool For Love by Sam Shepard, will play Teach.

The duo’s casting leaves the play’s third character, Bobby, as yet unfilled or unannounced.

‘Basketball Wives’ Star Evelyn Lozada Goes To Teen Prom in Plunging Gown
The reality star agreed to go to prom with a 19-year-old and she opted to wear a super low-cut, tight red dress. Do you think this was inappropriate?

Evelyn Lozada went to prom with a high school senior and she definitely brought the heat! The Basketball Wives star was invited by Anthony Nelson to attend his prom in Bloomfield, Michigan on May 29.

Evelyn Lozado Goes To Prom

Evelyn showed up to Anthony’s house wearing a shocking outfit. While everyone else looked prom ready, she opted to wear a skin-tight dress! She wore sky-high heels and she showed off her cleavage. It was so distracting!

They took a bunch of pics and then hopped into an SUV and headed to dinner. It turns out this was Evelyn’s first time to prom since she never went to her own!

“The reason why I’m so excited is because I never...

Hats Off to Mr. Jackson
Michael C here to sound some trumpets for a fine actor's return from the wilderness. There are many pleasures to be found in Django Unchained, but for me the most satisfying was being able to unambiguously love a Samuel L. Jackson performance for the first time in what feels like forever.

Let's be frank, Jackson has always been a guy who would cheerfully say yes to just about any script that was correctly formatted. But at least back in the 90’s he would throw in an Eve’s Bayou or a Jackie Brown every once in a while. Over the last decade, however, his time has been divided between coasting on his star presence in blockbusters or squandering his considerable talent in straight up dreck like The Man or The Spirit. What attempts he has made at meaningful work have largely been dumped directly in the straight-to-video bin. (Home of the Brave anyone?...

DVD Review: Stake Land
Stake Land

Stars: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Danielle Harris, Kelly McGillis, Sean Nelson, Michael Cerveris | Written by Jim Mickle, Nick Damici | Directed by Jim Mickle

Does it need pointing out that vampires are in vogue right now? It seems like one can’t move these days without stumbling upon a new film, television programme or book featuring nasty bloodsucking beasties. And as I mentioned in my Priest review, post-apocalyptic movies aren’t exactly in short supply either. So to be faced with a post-apocalyptic-vampire movie is to be faced with what could well be an overfamiliar if not dull affair. But Stake Land, despite its less than original trappings, is not a movie to be hastily overlooked.

Following a vampire epidemic (which is left unexplained), much of civilised America has been destroyed and abandoned. What little remains of humanity exists in small, isolated and increasingly desperate communities. It is in...

Stake Land (Review)
2011 - 100 mins. - Rated R

D: Jim Mickle

C: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Michael Cerveris, Sean Nelson, Kelly McGillis, Danielle Harris

A vampire hunter and a young boy trek through America after a vampire plague has wiped out most of the population looking for a safe haven.

Stake Land plays out like Zombieland, but with a more serious approach and with vampires replacing zombies. Part of what made Zombieland such a memorable film experience was that it had a wonderfully appealing cast of actors who created this dynamic family element amongst one another while on screen. While Stake Land is a visually stunning film with some beautiful cinematography, the actors fail to bring to life their characters, to create that one of kind chemistry and to engage audiences with what is happening to them. Connor Paolo's performance is especially one note. He is the narrator of the film with...

"Movies by Hal Ashby" @ Bam
Updated through 5/6.

"A long-time editor, first for William Wyler and then for Norman Jewison, Hal Ashby was nearly forty when Jewison produced his directorial debut, The Landlord (1970)," writes Dan Callahan for Alt Screen, "and while the visual tact of Wyler and the social consciousness of Jewison never left him, Ashby brought to his own productions a distinctive flavor that was his alone. He was such a dedicated pot smoker that his friends sometimes called him 'Hashby,' and he would direct his films with a kind of advanced on-set stoner passivity, his touch so light that it often seemed like benign neglect. But it was Hashby's ability to recede into the background that enabled some very talented performers to unleash their wildest instincts, and it was Hashby's ever-ready and undemanding affection — the fuzzy-soft, bleary-eyed bemusement with which he regarded people — that gave his films their distinctive vibe, that imbued his...

Treatment | Review - Tribeca Film Festival 2011
Directors: Sean Nelson, Steven Schardt Writers: Sean Nelson, Steven Schardt Starring: Joshua Leonard, Sean Nelson, Ross Partridge, Jessica Makinson, Brie Larson Leonard (Joshua Leonard) has a pitch for a new screenplay, but Nelson (Sean Nelson) -- the trust fund roommate from whom Leonard parasitically freeloads -- wants nothing to do with his genius zeitgeist ideas. Leonard insists that his financially-focused idea is especially meaningful at this particular juncture in time; but still, Nelson does not want to listen. Then, on one fateful night, Leonard is hanging out at a dive bar when Gregg D (Ross Partridge) -- a narcissistic ("You say narcissist, I say carbon-based life form") A-list action film star who Leonard wants to play the lead in the new script -- stumbles in the front door. Leonard follows Gregg D into the men's restroom, Gregg D pisses on his leg, and the rest is history... Well, not really.

Stake Land Review: Feeding On The Bloody Corpse Of Twilight
Stake Land is one of those films that borrows from several genres, yet somehow emerges as one of the more imaginative, innovative of the lot. The vampire movie, a genre that is ruefully overcrowded these days, is one that requires a distinct voice in order to separate itself from the pack. Stake Land manages to pull that off, and plants the viewer into an gritty, brutal world where the vampire is once again what it should be -- dangerous and terrifying, pitiless and unrelenting, and capable of destroying the world as we know it.

The world of Stake Land is one where the vampires have come and laid waste to modern society with extreme prejudice. There's little to no history or explanation given regarding where they came from and how it came to be -- vampires simply are. They're mindless, feral, atavistic creatures who attack anything and anyone -- when...

Two New Character Trailers for Jim Mickle's Stake Land Show the Vampire Apocalypse through Mister and Sister's Eyes
The vampire thriller Stake Land has already released into theatres and on cable. Now, two more character trailers are available, which show the apocalyptic atmosphere of Jim Mickle's latest horror production. The first clip is over six minutes long and "Mister" (Nick Damici) wanders back onto his family estate. Tragedy awaits him. Also, in the second clip, titled "Sister," Kelly McGillis' character is the the focus. As a nun, she buries the hordes of vampires, who are foolish enough to trespass on Church grounds. Have a look at both of the clips inside.

The synopsis for Stake Land is here:

"America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled,...

Cast: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Kelly McGillis, Michael Cerveris, Danielle Harris, Sean Nelson

Playing out like a mash-up of Zombieland, The Road, The Stand, and The Karate Kid, Jim Mickle’s Stake Land blends together vampires, a post-apocalyptic future, right-wing head cases, and mentorship with bite. Co-written by star Nick Damici and director Mickle, the indie doesn’t carve out a new road for the genre film, but it makes well-traveled paths seem much fresher.

Kelly McGillis
The iconic flight instructor is back in a new movie about vampires and zombies

Kelly McGillis first made her presence known to a national movie audience when she co-starred with Harrison Ford in the classic Amish thriller Witness. After that she played with the fly boys in Top Gun and acted opposite Jodie Foster in The Accused.

After a long break from the movies, Kelly McGillis is back in the apocalyptic vampire adventure Stake Land. She plays a nun whose flock has turned into rabid monsters and she goes on the run with Connor Paolo and scream queen Danielle Harris.

We recently spoke with Kelly about her new film, her new marriage, and her former life in Key West.

How long has it been since you were in a major motion picture?

Kelly McGillis: I don't know. I have no clue.

Here is what Paolo had to say about the deadly vampires in the film:

"These vampires are hungry, but very hurtable. They're strong, but only in a crackhead way. There's nothing malevolent about them – they're instinctual."

Paolo goes ont to say that these vampires are based on more scientific realism than supernatural or mythological elements. He gave thanks to Nick Damici, who co-wrote the film's screenplay and also stars as the mysterious Mister.

Stake Land (2011)
Directed by: Jim Mickle

Written by: Mickle and Nick Damici

Cast: Danielle Harris, Kelly McGillis, Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Sean Nelson, Michael Cerveris

Zombieland is a movie about a strange virus/illness that takes over the world, making North America virtually uninhabitable because of roaming zombie hordes and a complete collapse of civilization. Oh, I mean, Stake Land. Sorry.

And instead of zombies, they are undead, decaying, fast-moving vampires that act exactly like zombies. A grizzled and world-weary vampire slayer, possessed of uncanny skills to slay the creatures of darkness, rescues a young man with nowhere to go, mentors him, and teaches him about survival as they traverse The United States in various automobiles with hopes of reaching an outpost of safety.

I just know that when Zombieland came out, the people at Dark Sky probably had a meeting about how they needed to change the name from Stake Land...

Danielle Harris on 'Stake Land' and 'Willie'
Danielle Harris did not only star in the vampire movie Stake Land, she directed a short back-story for one of the characters: "Willie", played by Sean Nelson.

Harris stars in Stake Land as Belle, a pregnant woman who hitches a ride with other survivors in the vampire-ridden wastes of North America in the dystopic future. During the filming, the producers at Dark Sky media and director Jim Mickle decided to create 6 short films, to accompany the feature film, that would be released online or possibly on the DVD.

“Mickle asked me, ‘Do you want to do one?’ I had, like, one day off during the three weeks we were filming, and I came home at 2 in the morning and wrote the story to shoot the next day.”

Harris actually has directed another horror short, Madison, which was part of the ill-fated all-female horror anthology Prank. She’s also gearing up...

‘Stake Land’ Jebediah Clip – A Return to Gruesome Vampire Storytelling
Here is a new three-minute clip from Stake Land, the upcoming horror film from Director Jim Mickle and starring Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Kelly McGillis, Danielle Harris and Sean Nelson.

America’s infatuation with vampires and zombies dips into the gruesome in the clip. Don’t consider it your typical cache of The Vampire Diaries, True Blood or The Walking Dead. It looks like Mickle is trying to bring back the old school vampires, that sharply contrast with today’s over-romanticized sex maniacs.

Story:

America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Gossip Girl’s Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (In the Cut’s Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead.

Two New Stake Land Character Prequels: Jebediah and Willie
Nick Damici and Connor Paolo in Stake Land (2010)
Two more new character prequels for Jim Mickle's post-apocalyptic terror tale Stake Land have shown up online, and of course we have them for you right here. Prepare to meet Jebediah and Willie during the time leading up to the horrific events of the film.

"Jebediah", starring Michael Cerveris, was directed by Larry Fessenden; and "Willie", starring Sean Nelson, was directed by Stake Land co-star Danielle Harris and edited/scored by Graham Reznick.

Says Fessenden of the vignettes: "The idea was to invite some of our favorite directors to contribute to the mythology of Stake Land. Each brought their own sensibility to the world that Nick Damici and Jim Mickle created in the feature. And the actors were very gracious to work on these mini-films on their days off during the shoot, lending their talents to directors they didn't even know. It was a tribute to their commitment and their affection for Stake Land.

[Movie Review] Stake Land
The good news about the film Stake Land is that it manages to deliver a fairly suspenseful and sometimes exciting horror tale about hoards of feral vampires ravaging the globe. The bad news is that it's just not very original. Though it will make you jump, which is the purpose of scary movies, so as long you're not looking for anything groundbreaking, then director Jim Mickle's Stake Land is a good way for a horror fan to spend 98 minutes.

Stake Land covers familiar territory already paved in many other 'Plague-of-the-undead-spreading-across-the-world' films, like the George Romero zombie films and The Last man on Earth (remade as Omega Man and I Am Legend). This time, it's vampires instead of zombies or mutants who are covering the globe but the basic formula plays out in the same manner.

The story follows a teenager named Martin (Connor Paolo, best known as Eric on...

(April 2011)

Starring: Nick Damici, Connor Paolo, Danielle Harris, Kelly McGillis, Sean Nelson and Michael Cerveris

With vampires still the rage, it seems it’s time to start stealing ideas from zombie movies and supplanting the cannibalistic undead with the blood-sucking undead. That’s essentially what you get with “Stake Land,” a vamp version of 2009 hit “Zombieland.” But while “Zombieland” was a broad hoot of a road comedy, “Stake Land” is bleak and rife with quiet desperation.

When a plague of vampires decimates society, a teen named Martin (Connor Paolo) teams up with a badass named Mister (Nick Damici) to travel through the lawless land with hopes of reaching New Eden, a place they alternately hear is the last hope for humans and a place rampant with not vamps but cannibals. Theirs is a world where...
