‘Awards Magnet’: Why ‘The Studio’ has the edge over ‘Hacks’ for Best Comedy Series at the 2025 Emmys
The Awards Magnet team has reconvened to analyze all of the comedy categories at the 2025 Emmys.
Senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Denton Davidson, and Mia McNiece agree that The Studio is the frontrunner in the Best Comedy Series race. After all, the Apple TV+ program is about Hollywood, and it set a new record for a first-year comedy with 23 total nominations, including four alone for Seth Rogen — series, lead actor, director, and writer — and he could potentially sweep all four.
Performers from The Studio over-performed in the nominations phase, with a whopping 10 of them receiving mentions. That number includes five guest stars who all portray themselves, plus Bryan Cranston, whose fictional performance steals the show. All of that bodes well for The Studio's chances up in the Best Comedy Series contest, considering that the Acting Branch is the largest within the Television Academy.
Comparatively, Hacks, the reigning Best Comedy Series champion,...

If there were an award for the best character names on television, Julianne Nicholson should make room on her mantel. As Sinatra on Paradise and Dance Mom on Hacks, Nicholson simultaneously thrilled and terrified us this season.
And Television Academy voters took notice — recognizing her with that rare feat of twin nominations for both drama (supporting actress) and comedy (guest actress) in the same season.
“It’s still a pinch me moment,” says Nicholson. “When it does cross my mind, it makes me very happy.” The actress, who won an Emmy back in 2021 for her work on Mare of Easttown opposite Kate Winslet, stopped by our Gold Derby studio to talk about getting to play a villain, learning those dance moves, and what to expect in Season 2 of Paradise.

“Paradise” executive producer John Hoberg had two main goals for Season 1 of the Hulu series. First, that his nephews would watch it, and secondly that his aunt would too, and text him afterward. “Paradise” achieved both — and didn’t stop there.
“I promised I wouldn’t do the thing that I’ve done every time since Twitter’s been around, which is to go there and just search #Paradise,” Hoberg told IndieWire. “I did, and it was constant. I could just refresh, and it was just people talking — and in addition to that, they were saying ‘You’ve got to watch this show.'”
Hoberg joined “Paradise” in the earliest stages, when creator Dan Fogelman had assembled a “mini room” that included writer Scott Weinger and executive producer Jess Rosenthal. There they laid the foundations of “Paradise”; a post-apocalyptic show done Fogelman-style, and the narrative marching orders of “big, engaging,...

After beginning production earlier this year, Paradise just got a surprising Season 2 filming update from one of its returning stars. Starring in one of the bigger supporting roles in Paradise is Julianne Nicholson, who plays the sinister Sinatra, leader of the Paradise bunker, who is always making devious plans behind the scenes. She stars opposite Sterling K. Brown in the twisty thriller series, who plays Agent Xavier Collins.
Nicholson recently sat down with Deadline for an interview to talk about the future of Paradise, and she revealed the current status of the show regarding a Season 2 filming timeline. According to Nicholson’s latest update, it sounds like Paradise Season 2 could be coming sooner than we thought:
"It’s going great. We’re in the end zone and it all ramps up to this last block, similarly to the first season. It is a much different season this year, where we...

Paradise season 2 has received an encouraging filming update from a key series villain. Paradise debuted in 2025 on Hulu and was a hit with critics and audiences, boasting an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. The show follows a group of survivors in an underground bunker who believe the world ended in an apocalyptic event.
It is eventually revealed that there are survivors outside the bunker, and Paradise season 2 will see Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) looking to find his wife, whom he previously believed had died. Xavier will not have the only story moving forward, as the season will continue to spend time in the Colorado bunker.
In an interview with Deadline, Julianne Nicholson, who plays the main antagonist, Samantha "Sinatra" Redmond, reveals that filming is almost complete and "we're in the end zone." She also adds that the season will follow a similar pattern where things ramp up towards the end of the season.

If it was already abundantly clear that Julianne Nicholson has extraordinary range — see Mare of Easttown, I, Tonya, The Good Wife, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Dream Scenario for reference — then her double Emmy nomination provides a perfect reflection of that range. In Hulu series Paradise, she’s nominated for her role of Sinatra, a political villain almost single-handedly responsible for the hoodwinking of thousands of people held captive in an end-of-the-world underground dome. It’s intense stuff, with Sinatra’s backstory including a tragic loss, and her present state teetering on the edge of fanaticism. Then, in absolute contrast, is her role in HBO Max hit series Hacks as a TikTok superstar with a substance abuse problem and the moniker Dance Mom. Here, Nicholson talks about the two vastly differing worlds of Paradise and Hacks, her new U.K.

HBO's The Outsider is taking over the streaming charts after the success of another Stephen King adaptation.
PerFlixPatrol, 2020's The Outsider has officially reached the number four spot on the chart of the top streaming series and TV shows on HBO Max. As of the time of writing, The Outsider sits just below The Gilded Age, while And Just Like That... and Rick and Morty both dominate the list from the number one and two spots, respectively.
Based on King's 2018 novel of the same name, HBO's The Outsider premiered in 2020 and, despite fairly low viewership averages, established a fervent fan base while garnering major praise from critics. Julianne Nicholson calls it “greedy, but delightful” to chase two trophies at the 77th Emmy Awards, where she is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Hulu’s Paradise and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Max’s Hacks. The Television Academy confirms she is the first performer since 2014 to land that exact drama-comedy pairing in a single year.
In Paradise, Nicholson plays Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond, a tech billionaire running a clandestine mountain bunker after a global catastrophe. The political thriller bowed on January 26 and earned four total nominations, including Best Drama Series and nods for co-stars Sterling K. Brown and James Marsden. Hulu ordered a second season in April, signaling confidence after the show’s streaming debut cracked Nielsen’s top-ten originals for two consecutive weeks.

Just under two months ago, Hollywood mainstay Julianne Nicholson received her IndieWire Performance Honor, another mark in a year that is finally shining the spotlight on the journeyman actress. Sure, we’ve always been aware of her talent — she even earned some awards recognition as part of the ensembles for “August: Osage County” and “I, Tonya,” as well as a Supporting Actress Emmy nomination for “Mare of Eastown.” But it’s 2025 now, and Julianne Nicholson is a full-fledged television star.
First came “Paradise,” in which she got to portray the villainess Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond. Then came her recurring stint on “Hacks,” where she stretched her comedic muscle as a dancing mom TikTok influencer, appropriately named Dance Mom. Last month, Nicholson scored both her second and third Emmy noms for the projects, in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Guest Actress in a Comedy Series categories, respectively.

Who's ready for a little Emmys history lesson?
If Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky were to win Best Comedy Writing this year they would enter the Emmy record books as the women with the most wins for writing a single narrative series. They're nominated for the penultimate episode of Hacks Season 4, titled "A Slippery Slope."
With four Emmy nominations, Aniello and Statsky have already tied Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Diane English (Murphy Brown) for the most bids for a woman in the Best Comedy Writing category. To date, Aniello, Statsky, Fey and Anne Flett-Giordano (Frasier) are the only women to prevail twice for a comedy; Fey has a third writing win under her belt for the variety program Saturday Night Live. For dramas, Robin Green (The Sopranos) holds the record for a single series for a female writer, with six noms and two wins.

Julianne Nicholson may live quietly in the English countryside, but this Emmy season, she’s making noise in Hollywood. With two Emmy nominations — for her haunting turn in Hulu’s post-apocalyptic political thriller “Paradise” and her scene-stealing comedic performance in HBO Max’s “Hacks” — Nicholson has evolved from industry favorite to awards season darling.
“I know it’s greedy,” she says during the episode on the Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, “but it took me 30 years to get here, so I thought, let’s just start stacking them up.”
It’s dry, self-effacing humor that’s classic Nicholson. Behind the humility lies a career moment: another piece of recognition for her work that’s long been critically admired, often under the radar, but now gaining broader appreciation. Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast caught up with Nicholson to discuss her dual Emmy noms and more. Listen below!

With a big variety of series, dozens of first-time nominees and a few shows breaking back into the race, the 77th annual Emmy Awards are set to make history — possibly in more ways than one. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in some of the main categories.
Drama series
Arguably, the most stacked race of all this year is the drama category. Although “Severance,” “The Last of Us,” “Slow Horses” and “Andor” have landed nominations in the category before, none of this year’s noms have taken home the trophy in the past. “Severance” is an early front-runner but it’s not without its huge competitors in the debuts this year. “Paradise” on Hulu racked up four nominations for its freshman year on Hulu, and “The Diplomat” caused quite a splash with its second season on Netflix, but HBO Max’s “The Pitt” (with 13 noms) remains the biggest competitor against the Apple TV+ leader.

Peaky Blinders is one of the most beloved period crime drama shows of all time. Even several years after its finale, the interest in the show is as high as ever, with Netflix planning a sequel film.
However, BBC One created the perfect replacement for Peaky Blinders with Dope Girls. The series comes with a big difference from Steven Knight's drama, as it features a women-led cast. The historical period drama series debuted earlier this year on BBC One, and, following its debut on Hulu on Jul. 29, Dope Girls features an exciting Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%.
Until its U.S. release, Dope Girls featured a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score out of seven reviews. Following its debut on Hulu, the score dropped slightly to a still-fantastic 88% after a negative review. So far, there are not enough opinions from the audience for a score on the Popcornmeter.

It was easy for Paradise to cling to the title as one of the best shows of the year after its release in December. However, now more than halfway through the year, it’s clear that Dan Fogelman and Sterling K. Brown’s This Is Us reunion will hold up as one of the strongest of 2025. The show also introduced stars like James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, and Krys Marshall to bring this twisty, dystopian story to life.

Freshly minted Emmy nominees Sterling K. Brown and Dan Fogelman turned up at San Diego Comic-Con to take a victory lap for Season 1 of their celebrated Hulu series Paradise and preview the upcoming second season.
Fogelman kicked off the proceedings by revealing that “we’re deep” in production on Season 2, with filming set to wrap in two weeks and nearly two-thirds of the episodes already edited. He explained that Hulu allowed him to hire a Season 2 writers room before Season 1 started because he wants to keep the show on a yearly cycle of episodes. “We have kids on this show,” said Brown. “We can’t wait too long [between seasons]. Brown gave fans some great insight into the production of Season 2 of Hulu's hit political thriller, including a few promises of things to come when new episodes arrive some time next year. "The outside of the bunker gets explored, as well as what continues to happen inside the bunker with Xavier's absence," Brown stated. "There is a collision when the two worlds meet like: What has life been like outside? How has life changed inside? When those two worlds come into contact with one another, what kind of shamrocks and shenanigans can we get up to?"
Created by Dan Fogelman, best known for creating the hit drama series This Is Us which also starred Sterling K. Brown, Paradise is largely set within a sprawling, city-like bunker complex in Colorado.

Sterling K. Brown couldn’t feel more excited about how things are shaping up on Season 2 of his hit Hulu series Paradise.
In a recent conversation with Deadline, the actor teased that principal photography on Season 2 of Dan Fogelman’s political thriller is nearly done — and his thoughts so far include a lot of very gracious adverbs.
“We’re block shooting Episodes 7 and 8 with Hanelle M. Culpepper [directing] right now. Very excited with what we have shot thus far,” Brown said during a chat about his other Hulu series, set to premiere Wednesday, Washington Black. “We had a screening of Episode 1 for our crew, and we were all very, very, very, very, very happy. We’ll have a screening of Episode 2 next week, because Dan likes to show people the fruits of their labor as close to real time as possible, and it sort of inspires people to make it through the finish line.

ParadiseSeason 2 has been in production for several months now, and after teases from creator Dan Fogelman and stars Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson, we finally have our first look at the second installment in the upcoming series. Entertainment Weekly has three new images from Paradise Season 2, one of Brown’s Xavier Collins, and two more of newcomers Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty. Fogelman had previously alluded to Paradise Season 2 exploring outside the bunker, and these images confirm he was telling the truth. Brown also caught up with EW for an interview to tease where Paradise is heading in its highly-anticipated second season.
Now that Paradise Season 2 is heading outside the bunker, EW asked if there was any chance of merging with another iconic post-apocalyptic franchise like The Last of Us. Brown admits that it “would be a lot of fun,” but that it’s way above his “pay grade.

Sterling K. Brown recently earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the first season of Paradise, and now the actor is returning to Hulu for a new show that just got an exciting sneak peek. Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.
This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.
Based on the early predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress, the third time will be the charm for Coon. And having a juicy, highly visible role in The Gilded Age will only help.

Before Rachel Brosnahan starred in DC's Superman as Lois Lane, she played the wife of Rami Malek in the 2025 action thriller, The Amateur. And while her appearance as Sarah Heller was short-lived, it was enough to get the ball rolling, setting the stage to turn this CIA cryptographer into an on-field agent. Now that The Amateur has entered the streaming market, it didn't take long for it to become a hit on streaming platforms.
As of July 19, 2025, The Amateur ranked #10 on Disney+'s Top 10 Movies worldwide and remained in that spot on July 20's charts. This feature is based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell, and it follows the story of Charlie Heller (Malek), who learns that his wife, Sarah (Brosnahan), died in a terrorist attack in London. Despite the hesitation of his higher-ups at the CIA and his mentor, Robert Henderson (Laurence Fishburne), they allow Charlie to learn the...

There's certainly a lot of impressive shows, actors, creatives, and more nominated at the 2025 Emmys this time around, and Netflix alone has gotten itself a good amount of attention with a number of its different programs. However when it comes to You season 5, which meets the eligibility period, there's one star who's disappointed by their snub. And we definitely agree!
Actress Anna Camp, who joined the psychological thriller's final season, took on the role of identical twins Raegan and Maddie Lockwood. The two are Katie's sisters, and became Joe Goldberg's sisters-in-law. Their stories were certainly complicated, and Camp does not have a twin in real life. She ended up playing both characters, and did so wonderfully!

The 2025 Emmy nominations were filled with some jaw-dropping picks, with several actors and programs beating the Gold Derby's odds.
In our latest snap poll, readers said the bids for Zoë Kravitz and Meghann Fahy caused their jaws to drop the widest. Kravitz was previously snubbed at the Emmys for Big Little Lies, but she received sweet justice this week for portraying herself — at least, a fictionalized version of herself caught in a drug-related mishap — on The Studio. In all, the Apple TV+ show received 23 nominations, more than any other first-year comedy in Emmy history.
As for Fahy, she's a former Emmy nominee for The White Lotus whom awards pundits forecasted would be overlooked this year for the Netflix limited series Sirens. But that wasn't the case. She clearly wowed voters in her role of Devon DeWitt, a woman who tries to protect her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock) from her...

It’s a “Severance” world. The Apple TV+ series dominated this year’s Emmy nominations with 27 nods, and despite the show’s critical and ratings acclaim, Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast hosts were still taken aback.
“Huge,” said Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis. “I don’t think I even thought that much. That is more than ‘Shōgun’ last year.”
Davis was joined by Variety executive editor, TV, Michael Schneider, as well as senior TV features editor Emily Longeretta and senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay for the Awards Circuit Roundtable. Listen below!
The quartet also looked at some of the other big news from this week’s nods, including another Apple TV+ powerhouse, “The Studio,” which led all comedies with 23.

When it comes to predicting the Emmys, there is one group of bellwether categories worth paying close attention to. Over the past decade, a notable trend has emerged: the winners for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Casting have mirrored each other seven times; Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Casting eight times; and Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Casting nine times. That's a combined accuracy rate of 80 percent over the most recent 10-year period.
With that in mind, our gaze is fixed on the three casting races for the 2025 Emmys, where The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence are already making compelling cases as the early front-runners.

2025 may be nearly half way through, but in the world of TV the year is still young. As such, even though you may feel like the best TV you'll see this year is already behind us as we've headed down to the severed floor for Severance Season 2, stared at our reflection once again in Charlie Brooker's Netflix series Black Mirror, brought out the billy clubs for Disney+ must-see show Daredevil: Born Again, and had our collective socks knocked off by Philip Barantini's Adolescence, we assure you a veritable streaming smorgasbord still lies ahead of us in the coming months.
Yes, we may have just finished collecting our jaw from the flaw after that Andor Season 2 finale, and yes, the second seasons of both The Last Of Us and Doctor Who may have left our heads spinning, but there's still no shortage of returning favourites, fresh franchise offerings, original programming,...

Jay-Z and Beyoncé are the Emmys’ “’25 Bonnie and Clyde.” Let’s just hope the power couple stays Drunk in Love even after this year’s competition, where they’re competitors in the outstanding variety special (live) category.
Jay-Z, under his real name Shawn Carter, is among the executive producers nominated for Fox’s “The Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar,” which earned four nods total. Beyoncé is up for Netflix’s “Beyoncé Bowl” as executive producer and performer (billed as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter); that Christmas event also landed four nods.
Perhaps Jesse Collins can keep the peace. Not only is Jesse Collins Entertainment once again producing this year’s Emmy telecast, but the company was part of both the Kendrick Lamar halftime show and the Beyoncé event. On Emmy night in the production truck, Collins is likely to face 99 problems — hopefully this isn’t one.

After the announcement of the Emmy Awards nominations yesterday morning, The Studio was the toast of the town. With 23 nominations, the Seth Rogen-led industry send-up not only broke the record for the most nods in history for a freshman comedy, but tied The Bear's record for the most nominations for any season of a comedy.
Coming out of nominations morning, it may seem as though nothing can stop The Studio from claiming Best Comedy Series at the Emmys on Sept. 14 (and probably thanking Sal Saperstein).
But Deborah Vance may have something to say about that.
The Studio's record breaking doesn't change the fact that Hacks is the reigning Best Comedy Series, a title it claimed for its third season after two previous nominations. It has been nominated again for the top prize, one of its 14 nominations — down just a tick from last year's 17. Among those nominations is yet...

With the 2025 Emmy Awards announcing their nominees this morning, we’ve finally had time to catch our breath and read over the nominees. In the process, we found several snubs that are not only surprising but will age terribly in the years ahead. Check out our list and let us know if any big ones are missing.
2025 Emmy Snubs and Surprises Snub: An Only Murders Lead Bloodbath
The duo of Martin Short and Steve Martin gained new life with the arrival of Selena Gomez. The trio has become one of the great comedic teams in recent memory, allowing Gomez to shine by offering a laconic humor compared to the massive performances from Short and Martin. However, with only Short grabbing a nomination for the 2025 Emmys, we’re a little baffled. It’s possible both could have made the list in a year of six nominees, but unfortunately, we can never know if that is true.

Paradise took the world by storm earlier this year with its epic twists and turns and endearing performances, so renewing it for Season 2 was a no-brainer. The show performed so well during Season 1 that the renewal announcement was made weeks before the finale, giving the team a little extra time to get the ball rolling on the second season. Creator Dan Fogelman confirmed not long after the gripping Season 1 finale that Paradise Season 2 was already back in production, and while an official release date has yet to be announced, all signs point to sometime in 2026 as the most likely candidate for the show to return.

More strong Emmy showings from Disney+’s Andor, FX’s The Bear and What We Do In The Shadows and Hulu’s Only Murders In the Building as well as breakthrough performances from Hulu’s Paradise and FX limited series Dying for Sex helped Disney earn 137 Emmy nominations across platforms including ABC, Disney+, FX, Hulu and Nat Geo.
“We’re extraordinarily proud of our achievement today,” said Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees ABC and Hulu Originals. “In particular Paradise, which is a show that broke through in its first season, to see it nominated for its creative excellence is very satisfying. It’s a show that, from day one, Dana [Walden] and the entire organization got behind.”

Katherine Lanasa is feeling "grateful" after receiving her first career Emmy nomination on Tuesday, and she can't wait to see Jessica Williams (Shrinking), Jean Smart (Hacks), and Julianne Nicholson at the Sept. 14 ceremony.
The supporting actress has been recognized for playing charge nurse Dana Evans on Season 1 of HBO Max's The Pitt. Viewers followed the character throughout her entire 15-hour shift, with storylines including dealing with a nursing shortage and being punched in the face by an angry patient.
"This is an incredibly talented crew, and all these people have wonderful craft," Lanasa tells Gold Derby. "For some reason, this show in particular was the time that I really could feel the craft of the showrunner-creator, R. Scott Gemmill. It's not just about the dialogue. It's about this strong arc that everybody had. I felt it was very satisfying to watch and to read. Everything kind of wraps onto itself,...

The 2025 Primetime Emmy nominations have finally arrived in spite of another set of what feels like annual challenges to the television industry. As if a global pandemic was not Earth-shattering enough, in recent years television has also had to navigate labor strikes, and devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, leading some major Emmy contenders to go as much as three years between seasons.
But for many of the people behind the most beloved TV shows of the current moment, all that hard work and perseverance has paid off in the form of recognition from their peers in the Television Academy. Though one could argue that there are clear winners and losers, this round of Emmy nominations saw many networks and studios still get a piece of the pie.
Below we cover five key takeaways from the 2025 Emmy nominations, touching on snubs, surprises, and TV series that are on track to become awards season staples.

With the official list of shows and nominees announced, let’s dive into the 2025 Emmy nominations. Below we’ve ranked the nominees for Best Series, either Comedy, Drama, or Limited Series, based on the season eligible. For some, like The Bear, a new season of the show has already been aired since the one nominated was released. Check our ranking below, and we’ll confirm which seasons were eligible in each category.
21. Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story
Nominated for Outstanding Limited Series
Falling within the same realm as the Monsters: Dahmer season, The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is a dark and twisted tale of sex abuse and violence. It certainly has a place on television, but it’s hard to get too excited for a show that uses human pain as entertainment. It also comes after another Ryan Murphy revival, and while there are ways to tell...

On one level, the biggest surprise about Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations was how unsurprising they were — indeed, my final pre-noms forecast correctly projected, of the eventual nominees for best series, seven of eight dramas, eight of eight comedies and five of five limited/anthology series. But when you put them under a microscope, I think they tell an interesting story about today’s TV landscape.
HBO/HBO Max collected a platforms-leading and company-best 142 noms. Meanwhile, the biggest hauls for individual shows all traced back to Apple TV+ (which had its best year yet with 81 overall noms) and HBO/HBO Max, with the leaderboard topped by Apple’s sophomore drama Severance (27, up from 14 for its prior season), HBO’s limited series The Penguin (24), Apple’s rookie comedy The Studio (23, matching the comedy series record set last year by FX’s The Bear), the third installment of HBO’s drama franchise...
