As he weathers his own personal storm over Rust, Alec Baldwin’s disaster film Supercell hit video-on-demand and opened in a smattering of independent cinemas with little fanfare over the March 17-19 weekend. One year after Alec Baldwin was involved in a tragic shooting on the set of Rust, the star says he has lost multiple acting opportunities, noting in an interview with CNN in August that five roles disappeared. Yet since the Oct. 21, 2021, death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died when Baldwin pulled the trigger of a prop gun that was not supposed to contain live rounds, the actor has maintained a steady stream of work not all that different from the low-budget fare he appeared in before Rust.

In part, he has benefactors involved in Rust to thank for his continued employment, with upcoming titles including the sleep-walking-centric False Awakening and 97 Minutes, his first acting gig after briefly retreating from film sets.

“You don’t abandon your good friends at the drop of any trouble,” 97 Minutes screenwriter Pavan Grover tells The Hollywood Reporter of continuing to work with Baldwin.

The “Rust” production has reached a settlement with the estate of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died on set last year.

After multiple investigations into the fatal shooting during the New Mexico production and a series of lawsuits, Hutchins’ widow Matthew Hutchins issued a statement October 5 announcing a settlement over the wrongful death case against the producers of “Rust,” including lead star Alec Baldwin.

The principal production company behind Rust will not have to face the central claims in a lawsuit from script supervisor Mamie Mitchell.

A Los Angeles judge on Friday dismissed claims of assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Rust Movie Productions, Thomasville Pictures, Ryan Smith and Lengley Cheney, because they didn’t know Alec Baldwin would actually shoot the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Since the shooting, the producers have maintained that they weren’t responsible for supervising the production. They’ve argued in civil court and in contesting a fine assessed by New Mexico’s safety commission that they simply financed the movie.

Rust script supervisor Mamie Mitchell is dropping some claims in her lawsuit against the producers of the movie over the on-set shooting that resulted in the death and injury of two crew members.

Mitchell said she will withdraw causes of action for assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, leaving a sole claim for negligence. Under New Mexico labor law, workers advancing a claim for negligence against their employer are limited to worker’s compensation. Rust Movie Productions, however, stated in its appeal to a fine issued by New Mexico’s safety agency that it wasn’t the employer responsible for supervising the film set. Mitchell is looking to hold the Rust producer to that position, which opens up damages for negligence in civil court.

Anjul Nigam, a producer on “Rust” and a partner with Alec Baldwin, said he believes the filmmakers will still be able to finish filming on the indie Western once the investigation into the on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins concludes.

“We’re confident we’ll be able to complete the movie,” Nigam told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview Monday ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, adding that what happened on “Rust” was a “horrible tragedy.”

“The investigation will hopefully be resolved soon and will unveil what happened,” Nigam said. “Obviously, there will be people out there who will have negative perspectives, but we’re confident about continuing to make quality movies.”

Lawyers for Alec Baldwin and fellow “Rust” producers stated that “any claim that Alec was reckless is entirely false” in response to the new lawsuit filed by Halyna Hutchins’ family.

The family of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against Alec Baldwin and others involved in the film, alleging that reckless behavior and cost-cutting led to her death.

Hutchins was shot and killed on Oct. 21 while preparing for a scene at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, N.M. Baldwin, the film’s star, was holding the gun when it fired, though he has stated that he did not pull the trigger. Hutchins was shot through the torso, and the bullet lodged in the shoulder of the director, Joel Souza. Hutchins was airlifted to a hospital in Albuquerque, where she died.

She left behind her husband, Matthew Hutchins, and the couple’s 9-year-old son.

“He lost his long-term wife who was the love of his life, and his son lost a mother,” said Brian Panish, who represents Hutchins’ estate, at a press conference announcing the suit.

Alec Baldwin’s attorneys argued in a filing on Monday that a lawsuit stemming from the “Rust” shooting in October should be thrown out because the shooting was a workplace accident.

The filing marks the first time that Baldwin’s lawyers have laid out a legal argument for why he is not responsible in the Oct. 21 incident, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. The Santa Fe County (N.M.) Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, and no criminal charges have been filed.

As New Mexico police continue to probe the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injuring of Rust director Joel Souza on Thursday by a prop gun held by the film’s star and producer Alec Baldwin, Santa Fe’s top prosecutor is taking a wait-and-see approach on whether charges will be coming.

“This case is still in its preliminary states of investigation,” First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told Deadline on Friday.

“We are assisting the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office and have offered our full support to them,” she added. “At this time, we do not know if charges will be filed. We will look into all facts and evidence of the case with great discretion and have further information at a later time. Our thoughts are with all affected by this tragedy.”

Screen Media has bought North American rights to writer-director Joel Souza’s police crime-thriller “Crown Vic,” starring Thomas Jane and Luke Kleintank.

The distributor closed terms during the Cannes Film Festival amid a competitive bidding situation between seven other suitors. Screen Media plans to release the pic this fall.

“Crown Vic” premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. The supporting cast includes David Krumholtz, Josh Hopkins, Bridget Moynahan, Scottie Thompson and Gregg Bello. “Crown Vic” follows one explosive night in the life of a seasoned Lapd veteran, portrayed by Jane, as he takes a young cop (Kleintank) out on patrol and shows him the brutal reality of life behind the wheel of a Crown Vic.
