Image
“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.

“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”

“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

'Toxic Avenger' Trailer 2 Has Evil Kevin Bacon and Ultra-Violent Toxie Revenge
Image
The Toxic Avenger is a movie that seemed destined to drop into a vat of toxic waste and never be seen again. Now, though, the reboot of the classic Troma schlockfest is heading into cinemas this August, and a new look at Peter Dinklage's mop-wielding titular character has arrived in the latest trailer.

The Toxic Avenger is a remake of the 1984 low-budget horror classic, in which a mild-mannered and bullied janitor ends up being dumped in a barrel of toxic waste, only to be transformed into a hideously deformed, vengeful anti-hero who sets out to extract bloody revenge on those who have done him wrong. It is believed that the new version, directed by Macon Blair, will not deviate too far from the original movie’s plot, but this time around it is bringing with it an incredible cast.

Alongside Dinklage as Winston Gooze/The Toxic Avenger, the film also stars Kevin Bacon,...

‘Touch Me,’ ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ Win Top Honors at Overlook Film Festival; ‘Best Wishes to All’ Named ‘Scariest Feature’ at Horror Fest
Image
The Overlook Film Festival has named the best of the fest.

The feature film audience award went to Emilie Blichfeldt’s “The Ugly Stepsister,” while the grand jury prize for best feature film was awarded to Addison Heimann’s “Touch Me.”

“The Ugly Stepsister” is a gory reimagining of Cinderella, where the titular sibling is focused on trying out the latest 1800s beauty treatments to catch the eye of a royal suitor. “Touch Me” is a horror-comedy that follows two best friends who fall into a complex relationship with an alien whose touch is like a drug to them.

“It was an honor to be at the Overlook Film Festival,” Blichfeldt said in a statement. “This fest has such great audiences and I loved eavesdropping on their reactions. Thank you to those audiences for appreciating my film.”

'Toxic Avenger' Teaser Proves Peter Dinklage Is The Hero We Need
Image
2025 began with exciting news about the reboot of a 1984 cult classic that has been living in horror fans' minds rent-free since its release — and now it's finally coming to fruition. After premiering at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, The Toxic Avengerreboot, directed by Macon Blair, struggled to find a distributor that was down with the intense violence and gore of the wacky horror film. However, Cineverse, distributor of Terrifier 3, stepped up to gain the distribution rights in January 2025, with a now scheduled theatrical release of August 29. The New Jersey hero played by the legendary Peter Dinklage hadn't been seen in action since Fantastic Fest, until today that is.

A trailer for the upcoming horror comedy The Toxic Avenger has finally been released, and it's exactly what fans had hoped for: a film as zany as it is gory. Originating as a character in the low-budget Troma Entertainment film series, and then expanding into various media,...

Mubi Podcast | "The Amityville Horror”: America’s Most Haunted Home
Image
The most famous haunted house in America is a large Dutch Colonial family home that became a bestseller, super-successful horror movie and a franchise that has spawned over 60 movies (and counting). And it’s all based… on a con. Together with horror critic Jenn Addams, Fangoria editor-in-chief Phil Nobile Jr. and Bloody Disgusting critic Joe Lipsett, who is possibly the only person in the world to have watched all Amityville films, guest host Anna tracks how one haunted house movie became a modern folk story.Season six of the Mubi Podcast, titled “Haunted Homes,” considers how movies about haunted houses let us explore—and often parallel—our relationships with our homes. Each episode visits a horror movie that changed the way we imagine a haunted house, from the crumbling Gothic mansions to white picket fences, what it says about the people who live in the houses and what scares them the most.

“The Most Disgusting, Gory, Vile Thing I’ve Ever Seen” – First ‘Terrifier 3’ Reactions Out of Fantastic Fest!
Image
Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest last night, leaving viewers in shock and awe. The first reactions promise sickening gore, laude the performances by David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera, praise Damien Leone’s direction, and tease Art the Clown’s expanded lore.

“Terrifier 3 just might be the goriest movie to ever grace a multiplex screen,” raves Fangoria editor-in-chief Phil Nobile Jr. “David Howard Thornton having a blast, funniest he’s ever been as Art; Lauren Lavera put through the wringer. Possibly the most physically put-upon final girl since Marilyn Burns.”

“Terrifier 3 blew the damn roof off,” asserts Cob. “Gonzo slasher horror cranked up to 11. Bursting with some of the most fantastically diabolical kills ever put to screen (holy shit). Shower scene will go down in history. We have a new contender for best horror movie of the year.”

Four Decade Anniversary of the Horrifying Cult Magazine 'Fangoria'
Image
Renowned for being considered one of the “World’s Best Horror and Cult Film Magazines”, the terrifyingly terrific magazine ‘Fangoria’ is an admirable aspect of the horror\ community. The internationally distributed American magazine isn’t entirely niche, but it’s certainly something that isn’t mainstream at the same time. Ultimately, it’s a somewhat hidden staple of the horror-lover community that interestingly doesn’t only have to appeal to those lovely fans of horror; such as those who enjoy cinema in general, or simply those who adore sociological elements of media. But, regardless, no matter the potential of who ‘Fangoria’ can appeal to, what the magazine assumingly hopes to achieve is to give faithful and shockingly scary content for everything horror as a whole. Now, how does it achieve this, you may be wondering to yourself? Well, I absolutely can’t wait to tell all of you. Things to...

Cocaine Bear Early Buzz: The Best Movie Of 2023 (So Far) Has Arrived
Image
It is still early in 2023, but several movies have already left quite the impression on moviegoers, such as Blumhouse's killer doll flick "M3GAN" and M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller "Knock at the Cabin." But perhaps the craziest movie of the year is hitting theaters soon: "Cocaine Bear."

Directed by Elizabeth Banks ("Pitch Perfect 2"), the film is actually loosely based on a true story of a bear that, as the title implies, ingested a ton of cocaine. What could possibly go wrong? The movie has an absolutely stacked A-list cast led by the likes of Keri Russell and Ray Liota, in one of his final performances. As for the specifics of it, the synopsis for the film reads as follows:

Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner's plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild dark comedy finds an oddball group of cops,...

Universal Slammed By Horror Fans For CGI Criticisms
Image
As other studios come under fire for their treatment of the industry, Universal is being slammed for their CGI criticisms in a tweet for John Carpenter's The Thing. Based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s novella Who Goes There?, the 1982 sci-fi horror film centered on a group of American researchers stationed in an isolated Antarctica base who begin a descent into paranoia as they discover the titular alien species that can perfectly imitate any organism. Led by frequent Carpenter collaborators Kurt Russell and Keith David, The Thing was poorly received upon its release, though has been reappraised as one of Carpenter's best.

One of the biggest elements initially met with division now praised in Carpenter's The Thing was its practical effects designed by Rob Bottin and Stan Winston. Universal recently took to Twitter to applaud the practical effects with the post saying that "CGI could never" depict its iconic moments.

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back here in 2023, with Fangoria officially announcing the nominees and beginning the voting process this week. Unlike the Oscars, the Chainsaw Awards are voted on entirely by the fans, and now is your chance to let your voice be heard.

Fangoria previews, “This past year in horror has been an absolute feast of frights, and we are so excited to celebrate outstanding achievements in horror film and television with our 2023 Chainsaw Award nominations.”

“We shouldn’t be surprised at the lack of love horror received from mainstream awards this year, but 2022 was an embarrassment of riches for the horror fan, and to see none of it nominated by the bigger institutions was a bit of a shock. As ever, Fangoria is happy to pick up the slack,” Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr. said in a statement.

“The genre excellence on display in 2022 encompasses veterans and new voices,...

Viral Horror Movie Skinamarink Has Earned 67x Its Budget In One Week
Image
Skinamarink, the indie horror film that received a wide release after going viral on TikTok, has achieved an impressive box office result at the end of its first week in theaters. The experimental horror film is the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball. The film, which is presented through a variety of shots that avoid showing the faces of the main characters, follows two siblings who wake up to find that their father is missing and all the exterior doors and windows in their home have vanished, leaving them to their own devices while a mysterious entity lurks in the shadows.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Skinamarink has now earned 1 million in the North American box office. While that number can't exactly compete with the weekend's big blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water and M3GAN, Skinmarink only cost 15,000, meaning that this total has already multiplied the film's budget 67 times.

Glass Onion Director Reveals Surprising Inspiration Behind Derol
Image
Director Rian Johnson shares the inspiration behind Glass Onion’s Derol. Released for streaming by Netflix in December, The Knives Out sequel continues the mystery adventures of private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has received praise from critics and audiences for its ensemble performances, screenplay, and Johnson’s direction. The National Board of Review named the film as one of the best of 2022.

In conversation with Variety, Johnson reveals his inspiration for Glass Onion character Derol, stemming from the “Kato Kaelins of the world” and his real-life best friend Derol Frye. Frye shares the story of the character’s inception, which occurred while the two were at his parents’ barbecue in 2021; Johnson told him that not only would the character be named after him, but that his band — Little Petie & the Mean Old Men — would be referenced, and the role would be played by Noah Segan.

Let’s Scare Bryan to Death: David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone with Phil Nobile Jr.
Image
Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! You may know this month’s guest, Phil Nobile Jr., as the Editor-in-Chief of an up-and-coming horror outlet called (checks notes) Fangoria magazine. You may have only heard of them if you’re one of our more hardcore horror fans, but I highly recommend you keep up with them because I think they’re going places. In all seriousness, Nobile has been tirelessly steering the ship during Fango’s relaunch in 2018 and their change in ownership in 2020. He’s getting a variety of voices into the horror-verse not only through the print magazine, but also through a robust virtual platform and even a regular email newsletter.

In between all of this, Nobile found a little time to chat with me about David Cronenberg’s 1983 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. You may remember I covered eXistenZ with Joe Lipsett a while back,...

The latest Bond flick is here and we have to know — what's the best outfit for taking down the bad guy?
