Fremantle Exec Reveals The Baywatch Reboot At Fox Is Shaping Up With Revived Interest In The Original
Image
The Baywatch reboot is heating up as a Fremantle executive just confirmed that the long-discussed revival at Fox is moving forward with renewed interest in the original series. With the classic show getting a second life on network TV, it’s the perfect time to bring back the classic tropes the beach-focused show gave viewers. The reboot seems to be shaping up to be a fresh, modern take that still taps into all the parts of the iconic original series.

According to Deadline, Bob McCourt from Fremantle confirmed the reboot was in the works and that it's getting closer to distribution. They have been working on it for some time, with the revival nabbed by Fox last spring. However, they needed a showrunner and finally found one when they brought in Burn Notice creator Matt Nix to do rewrites earlier this year. Not much else was shared on what to expect from the reboot,...

Long Awaited 'Baywatch' Reboot Finally Gets Hot Update
Image
Last year, the long-gestating Baywatch reboot swam to Fox with hopes of bringing over-the-top California beach action back to the small screen. Now, according to Fremantle COO Bob McCourt, things are heating up for a return of red swimsuits, daring rescues, and plenty of lifeguard drama. During an Nem event in Dubrovnik, Croatia, McCourt shared that "We’re in advanced talks with Fox in the U.S. about the Baywatch reboot," with a series order appearing to be close at hand. He says the newfound momentum for the series stems from Fremantle's extensive efforts to bring the original series to viewers through a dedicated Fast channel, which has since become the company's second most popular offering.

Fremantle has been eyeing bringing back Baywatch for a while. The company originally acquired the rights to the series back in 2018, though the disastrous release of the 18% Rotten Tomatoes 2017 movie starring Dwayne Johnson and...

Fremantle Talks ‘Baywatch’ Reboot At Fox As Fast Channel & Remastered Version Revive Interest In The Classic Series
Image
Red swimsuits at the ready – the Baywatch reboot is edging closer. “We’re in advanced talks with Fox in the U.S. about the Baywatch reboot,” said Bob McCourt from Fremantle, which distributes the classic lifeguard drama.

Fox and Fremantle have been working on the reboot for some time. The project officially landed at Fox last spring. It has been heating up for a series order, with the network bringing one of the top showrunners on its talent roster, Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, on board to do rewrites a couple of months ago.

McCourt didn’t share more on the new take on the show. He did break down how there is wind in the sails of the original Baywatch after Fremantle sunk a boatload of cash into clearing and replacing the original music, and remastering and relaunching the series. It has also launched a dedicated Baywatch Fast channel,...

Fox Renewal Status Report: ‘Animal Control,’ ‘Alert’, ‘Rescue: Hi-Surf’, ‘Accused’, ‘Cleaning Lady’, ‘Going Dutch’ & Animation
Image
Fox veterans The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers have never really been on the bubble because first, they remain strong performers for the network, and secondly, due to the longer lead time needed in animation, they would always get an early renewal. That was taken to a new level this year as all three, along with American Dad!, returning to Fox after an 11-year run on TBS, have just been given four-year pickups, keeping the 20th TV Animation-produced comedies off the bubble list for the foreseeable future.

Also safe are the two Fox-owned animated comedies, Krapopolis and Grimsburg, which are not as strong in the ratings as the three long-timers but still bring eyeballs while also making money for the network via international and streaming sales. Krapopolis, now in its second season, already has been renewed for a fourth season. Grimsburg, also in its second season, is expected to be renewed for a third,...

Fox CEO Rob Wade Believes “Challenging” TV Business Is Starting To “Right-Size” Itself, Eyes The Next ‘Family Guy’, ‘Gladiators’ Second Window & More “Sexy Rebels”
Image
Rob Wade has been in charge of Fox for just over 18 months, a period that coincided with the fallout of the pandemic and two strikes in Hollywood.

But the Brit is optimistic that while the television business is challenging, it is starting to right size itself after a period of heavy spending by streamer rivals.

In a wide-ranging interview with Deadline, ahead of his keynote session at the Banff World Media Festival, Wade talked about the company’s recent restructure, a new windowing strategy, trying to find a “silver bullet” in animation, comedy hits and big unscripted swings.

Don’t worry, there’s also a bit of Baywatch.

“I know it’s challenging, but things are changing. We’re very much open for business, doing interesting creative deals and the business is right sizing itself, that’s a good thing. We’re trying to refocus how we do things and...

How Two Showrunners See ChatGPT Fitting Into Their Writers’ Rooms
Image
Asked about language learning models (LLMs) at the recent 2024 AI on the Lot summit, writers and showrunners Matt Nix and Mark Groffman had a lot to say. On a panel moderated by IndieWire editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Bridson on May 16 — also featuring filmmaker Joe Penna and animator/director Momo Wang — the creatives discussed a handful of the potential uses for systems like ChatGPT in scripted projects with an emphasis on episodic work.

“Every show has instructions and rules, whether it’s a way that a character behaves or the type of world view that [the show] has or the general shape of an episode or how two characters interact with each other,” Groffman said of using LLMs to break stories. “You can feed it all of this.”

“I’ve done a lot of experimenting with my own past work,” Nix said, likening the process of teaching ChatGPT to hiring a new writer on his show “Burn Notice.

Will AI Make Hollywood Production Cheaper? Don’t Count on It
Image
Before digital tools allowed composers to simulate any instrument on a laptop, musical scores for TV were simple melodies performed by a handful of session musicians. The newer technology meant those musicians lost their jobs; so did the guy who transcribed the composer’s scores.

However: That doesn’t mean scores require fewer people, or became cheaper to produce.

Today, even the smallest TV shows employ full orchestras. Tech made things easier, but the cost to produce scores for film and TV has only increased. With greater possibilities, more advanced jobs replaced those that were lost.

That’s the analogy Matt Nix, showrunner for “Burn Notice” and the recent “True Lies,” used when describing the advent of artificial intelligence at the May 16 AI on the Lot summit at Los Angeles Center Studios. He rejected the idea that AI will become a pathway to low-cost filmmaking and TV production that uses...

Upfronts 2024: Pilot Buzz & Other Development Updates In Another Atypical Broadcast Cycle

If you read the headline and are asking yourselves, pilots? what pilots? — you are not wrong. It’s been largely a 2024 pilot season without pilots. A grand total of maybe one of them is expected to factor into any fall decisions as the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules, starting with CBS tomorrow, May 2.

Needless to say, the broadcast pilot season is no longer the industry obsession it once was this time of year, with back-to-back disruptions from the pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes providing the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the decades-old pilot cycle. But for tradition’s sake, here are some insights into the networks’ current development plans.

There is no more stacked lineup for next season than CBS’ with three new drama series, Young Gibbs prequel NCIS: Origins; Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; and Watson, headlined by Morris Chestnut; and two new comedies, Poppa’s House,...

Hollywood Content Creators To Gather For Brady’s Gun Safety Summit; Organization Boosts Staff For Culture-Focused Campaign
Image
Writer-producer Matt Nix, writer-producer Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, and writer Ephraim Salaam and others are gathering this evening at WME for Brady United Against Gun Violence’s Show Gun Safety Summit.

The event will focus on how content creators can “model gun safety on screen to positively change attitudes and behaviors about guns, helping save lives,” the organization said.

It’s part of an increased effort by Brady United to the entertainment community via a culture and gun safety initiative. Their Show Gun Safety campaign has included a meeting of entertainment figures at the White House last spring, a partnership with USC’s Norman Lear Center’s Hollywood, Health and Society and a list of best practices.

Jessica Yellin will moderate the panel, with attendees also including Brady President Kris Brown and WME’s Dani Potter.

Brady also is planning another event at CAA on Nov. 9, with activists Fred Guttenberg, whose...

Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger Have a True Lies Reunion for Charity Event
Image
Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger reunited at a charity event, paying tribute to their hit film True Lies, released in 1994. True Lies, directed by James Cameron, became a genre classic and a box office success, starring Schwarzenegger as a spy leading a double life. CBS attempted to adapt True Lies into a TV series, but it was canceled after one season due to low ratings, receiving negative reviews compared to the original film.

Almost 30 years since the premiere of the acclaimed film that brought them together, True Lies, Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger met at a charity event and did not hesitate to take a photo together to pay tribute to the movie.

Released in 1994 and directed by James Cameron, True Lies has become a huge hit. An old school action comedy, True Lies had two Hollywood heavyweights, a strong supporting cast, and did not take long to become a genre classic.

Omar Miller To Star In Indie ‘Naples To New York’ Based On Story By Fellini
Image
Exclusive: Fresh off the series finale of CBS’ True Lies, Omar Miller has entered production in Italy on Naples to New York, an indie based on a story penned in the 1940s by a young Federico Fellini, who was not yet a filmmaker, and his longtime friend and collaborator Tullio Pinelli.

Set in 1949, this is a story of two children who set off on a journey across the ocean, as stowaways on a ship, looking for a family and opportunity in America. Along the way, they encounter characters both well-meaning and nefarious, who cement their faith in humanity. Miller plays George, an American cook on an international merchant ship who befriends our two young Italian stowaways. He’s a gentle giant with great comedic timing, and a strong sense of humanity.

Gabriele Salvatores is directing from his own script, with Paco Cinematografica, Isabella Cocuzza and Arturo Paglia serving as exec producers.

CBS Cancels East New York, True Lies Following S.W.A.T. Resurrection
Image
Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.

East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.

‘East New York,’ ‘True Lies’ Both Canceled at CBS After One Season
Image
CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.

According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

The drama series starred Amanda Warren as deputy inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York, a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. With family ties to the area, Haywood...

CBS is dropping the ax “East New York” and “True Lies” after one season. The CBS dramas’ Season 1 finales will now mark the end of both shows, airing Sunday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 17, respectively.

The news comes shortly after the network reversed course and renewed the drama series “S.W.A.T.” for a seventh and final season.

A description for the “East New York” finale teases that the “Haywood’s (Amanda Warren) leadership is called into question after a tragic shooting close to home, and her relationship with Suarez (Jimmy Smits) is put to the test.”

‘True Lies’ Canceled By CBS After One Season
Image
There will be no second season for CBS’ True Lies. The network has canceled the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie after one season. The news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 17.

The decision is not surprising. True Lies has not been able to find an audience, ranking as CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Its ratings remained relatively steady, indicating a loyal core audience, but they stayed low.

CBS today made renewal decisions on its three remaining bubble series, reversing the Friday cancellation of S.W.A.T. with a 13-episode order for a seventh and final season, and canceling freshman East New York. All three dramas come from outside studios.

‘True Lies,’ ‘East New York’ Canceled at CBS
Image
CBS’ 2023-24 season is starting to come into focus.

The network has opted to cancel its last two remaining bubble shows, True Lies and East New York, both of which ran a single season. True Lies, a reboot of the film of the same name, will air its series finale May 17, while procedural East New York will wrap May 14.

Reps for CBS declined comment.

The decisions come as CBS is poised to announce series orders for the upcoming 2023-24 broadcast season on Tuesday, with its fall schedule set to be announced Wednesday. For the first time in recent memory, CBS and parent company Paramount Global backed out of its traditional upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers with that slot now occupied by Netflix.

Adam Brody, Piper Perabo and More Call for Less Gun Violence on Screen at White House Roundtable: ‘Hollywood Has Been Due for a Reckoning’

“Shazam: Fury of the Gods” actor Adam Brody said on Wednesday that Hollywood “has been due for a reckoning in terms of our depictions of gun use and violence.”

Brody was joined by two dozen Hollywood actors, directors, creators and showrunners as a part of Brady’s “Show Your Safety” campaign taking part in a roundtable discussion at the White House about the role Hollywood can play in combating the gun violence epidemic. “True Lies” creator and showrunner Matt Nix, actor D.B. Woodside, “Evil” and “The Good Fight” creators Robert and Michelle King and “Yellowstone” star Piper Perabo were among those on the press call following the roundtable.

‘The Resident’ Canceled After Six Seasons on Fox
Image
The Resident is no more at Fox.

The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.

Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.

When The Resident premiered in January 2018, 20th TV was still part of the 21st Century Fox family that included the broadcast network. A month earlier, though, Fox and Disney had agreed to a $71 billion sale of the studio and several cable assets to Disney; that deal closed in 2019.

Since then,...

True Lies Premiere Recap: Grade CBS' Take on the Schwarzenegger Classic
Image
It’s a tale as old as time… er, 1994: Mild-mannered family man is actually a trained assassin working to rid the world of bad guys, yet his wife and kids think he’s a goofy salesman.

If the plot of True Lies sounds familiar, that’s because it’s based on James Cameron’s blockbuster movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (which in turn was based on the French film La Totale!). And now CBS has adapted the story into a series, which premiered Wednesday, starring Steve Howey (Shameless) and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and executive-produced by Matt Nix (Burn Notice). In a moment,...

Matt Nix’s ‘True Lies’ Series Isn’t a Remake of the ‘Iconic Film': No ‘Giant Muscled Man With an Austrian Accent’
Image
What does a producer do when his next big project is a TV series based on a very popular film that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger? Should he cast a similar type or go in a different direction? “True Lies” showrunner Matt Nix laid it on the line: “There was no universe where we’re gonna cast a giant muscled man with an Austrian accent. That just doesn’t exist.”

“True Lies,” which premieres on CBS Wednesday at 10 p.m. is about a suburban couple that is at the doldrums in their marriage, and the wife (Helen) is concerned her husband (Harry) might be having an affair only to discover that he is in fact an international superspy. The discovery shakes up their marriage, but also reinvigorates it, especially when she is brought into the spy agency, and her life changes dramatically.

Steve Howey, who is best known for playing Kevin Ball on “Shameless,...

True Lies TV Reboot Is A True Disaster, Say Critics
Image
True Lies' television reboot has received a critical drubbing ahead of its premiere later today. The CBS series is adapting the original 1994 James Cameron film, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Helen Tasker. Her mild-mannered husband, Harry (Arnold Schwarzenegger), is secretly a spy, who must attempt to balance saving the world from a massive threat and being a good husband. The new adaptation, which was created by Burn Notice's Matt Nix, stars Shameless and Reba star Steve Howey as Harry and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's Ginger Gonzaga as Helen.

Recently, some critics shared their thoughts on the True Lies series, which premieres on CBS at 10 Pm Est. Unfortunately, critical responses have almost universally dismissed the new project. While some assessments find it to be a weak retread of the original, others have much harsher comments to say about it. Check out select quotes from various critics' reviews below:...
