Fresh off the premiere of its new Fox drama “Murder in a Small Town,” Jeff Wachtel’s Future Shack Entertainment shingle is ramping up its development slate — next via a first-look pact with Daily Beast chief content officer Joanna Coles. Future Shack and Coles have multiple projects in development, including a take on MSNBC anchor Katy Tur’s memoir “Rough Draft.”

Wachtel and Coles are also shopping the drama “Base Camp,” which looks at the crowded — and dangerous — queue to get to the top of Mt. Everest. Playwright and screenwriter Anchuli Felicia King is the scribe behind that project.

Additionally, Future Shack and Coles have two more scripts in the works at 20th Television. Fox is adding another veteran writer and producer to its roster of broadcast direct deals.

The network has signed Without a Trace and The Last Ship creator Hank Steinberg to such a pact, under which Steinberg will develop drama series that will be wholly owned by Fox. Steinberg is currently an executive producer of Doc, a medical drama set to premiere on Fox in early 2025.

“Hank is an invaluable creative partner and collaborator, already delivering the intense new medical procedural Doc to the network,” said Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn. “Expanding this relationship builds on Hank’s proven track record for creating undeniable, broad-appeal franchises, and with his incomparable voice, will bring even more incredible, unexpected entertainment to Fox’s audiences worldwide.”

Added Steinberg, “The experience of working on Doc with Michael, [head of drama] Brooke Bowman and the entire Fox team has been one of the most rewarding of my career.

Veteran TV creator and showrunner Hank Steinberg has entered a broadcast direct deal with Fox Entertainment where he executive produces the upcoming medical drama Doc. Under the pact, Steinberg, creator and executive producer of the hit CBS series Without A Trace, will be developing new, Fox-owned scripted dramas for the network.

Getting a successful fully owned drama series on the air has been a big priority for Fox whose only effort in the space so far has been the short-lived Monarch.

On the Fox Entertainment talent roster, Steinberg joins fellow prolific drama creator Matt Nix whose drama project for the network had been heating up.

Hank Steinberg, a veteran writer and producer who created CBS’ “Without a Trace,” TNT’s “The Last Ship” and ABC’s “For Life,” has entered into a broadcast direct deal with Fox Entertainment.

Fox Entertainment has sealed a deal with TV scribe Hank Steinberg, the exec producer behind the network’s upcoming miseason drama “Doc.” Under the agreement, the latest in what Fox calls its “broadcast direct deals,” Steinberg will develop new scripted dramas to be produced and owned by Fox for the network.

Released in 1994 and directed by James Cameron, True Lies has become a huge hit. An old school action comedy, True Lies had two Hollywood heavyweights, a strong supporting cast, and did not take long to become a genre classic.

Exclusive: Fresh off the series finale of CBS’ True Lies, Omar Miller has entered production in Italy on Naples to New York, an indie based on a story penned in the 1940s by a young Federico Fellini, who was not yet a filmmaker, and his longtime friend and collaborator Tullio Pinelli.

Set in 1949, this is a story of two children who set off on a journey across the ocean, as stowaways on a ship, looking for a family and opportunity in America. Along the way, they encounter characters both well-meaning and nefarious, who cement their faith in humanity. Miller plays George, an American cook on an international merchant ship who befriends our two young Italian stowaways. He’s a gentle giant with great comedic timing, and a strong sense of humanity.

Gabriele Salvatores is directing from his own script, with Paco Cinematografica, Isabella Cocuzza and Arturo Paglia serving as exec producers.

This is it. CBS’s True Lies finishes up its short but sweet run with episode 13, the season (and series) finale. Written and directed by Matt Nix, episode 13 – “Waking Dreams” – airs on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 10pm Et/Pt, immediately following episode 12.

Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.

East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.

CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.

According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

CBS is dropping the ax “East New York” and “True Lies” after one season. The CBS dramas’ Season 1 finales will now mark the end of both shows, airing Sunday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 17, respectively.

The news comes shortly after the network reversed course and renewed the drama series “S.W.A.T.” for a seventh and final season.

A description for the “East New York” finale teases that the “Haywood’s (Amanda Warren) leadership is called into question after a tragic shooting close to home, and her relationship with Suarez (Jimmy Smits) is put to the test.”

“True Lies” will wrap up its run with a two-part finale. “After a van full of computer software containing confidential information about Omega Sector operatives gets hijacked, the team enlists the help of Max (Charlie Nix), a teen hacker, to learn who is going after the agency.

There will be no second season for CBS’ True Lies. The network has canceled the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie after one season. The news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 17.

The decision is not surprising. True Lies has not been able to find an audience, ranking as CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Its ratings remained relatively steady, indicating a loyal core audience, but they stayed low.

CBS’ 2023-24 season is starting to come into focus.

The network has opted to cancel its last two remaining bubble shows, True Lies and East New York, both of which ran a single season. True Lies, a reboot of the film of the same name, will air its series finale May 17, while procedural East New York will wrap May 14.

The decisions come as CBS is poised to announce series orders for the upcoming 2023-24 broadcast season on Tuesday, with its fall schedule set to be announced Wednesday. The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.

Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.
