Mojo Nixon: The Lost Interview

Mojo Nixon was absolutely himself right to the end. The cult hero died Feb. 7 on board the Outlaw Country Cruise, where he’d performed and caroused in signature fashion the night before (“passing after a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners,” according to a statement from his family).

Less than a year before that, he was in peak form as well, speaking with Rolling Stone about the making of his 2023 documentary, The Mojo Manifesto. It was a wide-ranging, side-splitting conversation, going over the wildest early...

Mojo Nixon Became a Cult Hero Singing About Anarchy, Sex, and Elvis. At 65, He Still Won’t Shut Up
Image
It’s well after midnight somewhere off the coast of Florida, and Mojo Nixon is leading a cruise ship full of lubricated and rowdy country-music fans in a bawdy singalong of a song titled “Tie My Pecker to My Leg.”

We won’t get into the lyrics here, but the verses touch on everything from barnyard sex to fornicating at a county fair. “This guy just heard the song for the first time,” Nixon, 65, and dressed in his customary Hawaiian shirt and uneven denim cutoffs, says, pointing to a man in the front row.

SXSW Film Festival Slates Music Docs on XXXTentacion, Sheryl Crow, Dio, Nick Cave, Tanya Tucker, Jazz Fest and More

Sheryl Crow, Nick Cave, King Crimson, Dio, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Chumbawamba, Courtney Barnett, Cesária Évora and Mojo Nixon — together again for the first time: These are some of the highly diverse subjects of a slate of music documentaries set to unspool at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin March 11-20.

The 16 movies represented in the “24 Beats Per Second” lineup are nearly all world premieres, in a film festival that skews toward SXSW’s original roots as a pure music festival by always carving out a special category for features that chronicle musicians or music scenes.

The music doc coming into the festival with probably the highest level of fan anticipation is , which promises to have director Sabaah Folayan offering “a sensitive portrayal” of a precocious, highly controversial, Soundcloud-based rapper “whose acts of violence, raw musical talent and open struggles with mental health left an indelible mark on...

Trying to define alt-country is a foolhardy pursuit, but that didn’t stop Mojo Nixon from leading a panel discussion into the genre while aboard the fifth annual Outlaw Country Cruise.

Aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise: Rock & Roll, Booze and Everything in Moderation
It’s a little after 2 o’clock on Great Stirrup Cay — Norwegian Cruise Line’s “private island” in the Bahamas — and the Bacardi Beach Bar is blaring Steve Earle’s escapist 1986 rocker “Someday.”

About 200 yards away in a discreet cabana, within earshot, sits Earle himself, reclining on a chair in sunglasses and a Shooter Jennings T-shirt. It’s an off-kilter juxtaposition, the sober since 1995 singer listening to one of the songs from his drugging years as it serves as the soundtrack to unleashed vacationers getting hammered on the beach.

That,...

Why Will Hoge Won’t Shut Up and Sing on Political New Album ‘My American Dream’
A few nights before Will Hoge left for tour, he got out the iron and some letter decals, and started pressing T-shirts.

“One of them said ‘Nikes Over Nazis,'” he tells Rolling Stone, sitting at an East Nashville sandwich shop a few hours before his bus is supposed to hit the road. “I did another that said, ‘Will Trade Racists for Refugees,’ and, the other day, [artist and SiriusXM radio host] Mojo Nixon called me the ‘Tennessee Troublemaker,’ and that’s probably my favorite thing that anyone has ever said about me.

Stars: Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis, Dennis Hopper, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson, Fiona Shaw, Dana Kaminski, Mojo Nixon, Gianni Russo, Francesca P. Roberts, Lance Henriksen | Written by Parker Bennett, Terry Runte, Ed Solomon | Directed by Rocky Morton, Annabel Jankel

Let’s be honest, Super Mario Bros: The Movie is not a great movie. It’s not even a great video game adaptation. As a movie-loving teen the film was high on my must-see radar, so imagine my disappointment when I eventually saw the film on VHS… However since then I’ve come to appreciate the film for the bizarre Sf-tinged adventure movie that it is, rather than an adaptation of my all-time favourite video game franchise.

A critical and commercial failure on it’s original 1993 release, Super Mario Bros: The Movie has, in the intervening years, become something of a cult classic. So much so that the out-of-print DVD...

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

This guy! First he gets an award from Canadians. Then he’s on an epically long chat show. What’s next?

You know that Mojo Nixon song, “Elvis is Everywhere”? Feels a bit like that with John Landis at the moment.

Seriously, as if having his bloopers destroy the Cinefamily wasn’t enough; as if having two of his most-beloved movies released on killer BluRays wasn’t enough; as if devoting an entire week to his commentaries right here on Trailers From Hell wasn’t enough, John Landis appeared in Canada last week to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

In this video, he’s appropriate flattered and happily candid about the absurdity of the award. Also: he talks Burke and Hare.

Then, last Sunday, John Landis made an appearance on the Kevin Pollak chat show. He’s not really in the first 7 minutes or so,...

SXSW Review: Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW
Twenty-five years ago, four guys organized what they expected to be a small gathering for local musicians to perform and get some exposure. Running it from the offices of the Austin Chronicle, the four -- Louis Black, Louis Meyers, Roland Swenson and Nick Barbaro -- didn’t expect that 700 people would show up for that first fest. Since then, South By Southwest has grown into the largest annual event in Austin and one of the largest and most recognized of such festivals in the world.

In Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW, producer/director Alan Berg chronicles the rise and history of SXSW through photographs, old footage and interviews not only with the founders, but also writers Michael Corcoran and Joe Nick Patoski, Creative Director Brent Grulke, entertainer Mojo Nixon and many others.

Set to a rocking soundtrack, the movie begins with a nostalgic look back at shows at Liberty...

Featuring: Roland Swenson, Nick Barbaro, Michael Corcoran, Louis Black and Mojo Nixon

The opening words of “Outside Industry” speak volumes about the role SXSW has played in being defined by, and in turn defining, the culture of this one small part of the huge state of Texas: “The kernel of creativity that defines Austin today, that all goes back to music.”

From nothing but ego to headlines like “2,000 Acts” and “100,000 Fans” and “Sold Out” placards, SXSW has been making its mark on the music scene for a quarter century. That it also has become a showcase for film and interactive technology could not have remotely been forecast given the early ideas for the festival when a few kids borrowed $70,000 (and blew it in less than a year).

Hangover Theater Guide to the 12 Days of Christmas
Gazing out upon the vast tapestry of Pajiban creeds and customs, I am certain that this time of year is feted is various ways. Whether you cherish Hannukah, Christmas, Ramadan, Yule, Kwanzaa, Decemberween or -- as my Jehovah's Witness friends call it -- Thursday, the holidays are about one thing: spending time with loved ones. This is usually accomplished in about 14 minutes. Then the rest of the time is spent caustically avoiding speaking to one another, drinking copious amounts of liquored nog, and remembering why you moved across the country and lost everyone's email address and phone numbers in the first place. Much of this awkwardness is spent sitting in some strange smelling house, a plate of half-eaten pie sitting in front of you, staring dully at a television while tuning out the mindless banter of distant aunts and uncles who are trying to figure out "why you aren't a...

Yes, yes, you cine-obsessives reading this may be sick to death of hearing about the years-in-the-making transition from "The Good Ol' Days of Print" to the "Blogger Invasion" free-for-all, but when I had the pleasure to speak with all three panelists, we tried to expand our range of topics: Are we talking too much about criticism instead of the movies themselves?
