Emma Thompson has shared the story of the time Donald Trump asked her out the same day her divorce from ex-husband Kenneth Branagh was made official on multiple occasions. However, while speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland this weekend, she added onto the anecdote, joking that she could have “changed the course of American history” had she accepted.

Thompson recalled being in her trailer on the set of 1998’s “Primary Colors” when she received an unexpected phone call. The caller identified himself as Trump.

“I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone,” Thompson explained. “Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.’”

The Oscar winner wasn’t exactly enthused. She replied, “Well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.

Exclusive: Streaming executives will not face their traditional grilling at the Edinburgh TV Festival Spotlight sessions this year.

The full line-up for this year’s annual gathering of the great-and-the-good of the UK TV industry is now public but Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) Spotlight sessions do not feature.

Spotlight sessions, which used to be called Controller Sessions, see UK commissioners take to the stage for an hour or so to talk upcoming content, strategy and – sometimes – take tricky questions from the audience of press and producers. They tend to also use the opportunity to unveil splashy new shows. The Spotlights have been a feature of the Edinburgh TV Fest for 50 years with British broadcasters taking part annually. As they burrowed deeper into the UK industry, streamers had begun hosting Spotlights in recent years.

Deadline is told that the streamer spotlights are on temporary hiatus and will be back next year.

Tina Fey and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker have joined the lineup of speakers at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival.

Helmed by creative director Rowan Woods and this year’s advisory chair, Bad Wolf CEO Jane Tranter, the line-up for the 50th edition of the fest includes master classes, “In Conversation” sessions and keynote speeches, including the prestigious James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture.

U.S. comedian, actress and producer Fey will bring her distinct charm to a lively conversation with beloved broadcaster Graham Norton on Friday, Aug. 22, while Brooker — lauded as the creator of one of the U.K.’s most impactful television shows in the last 10 years — will also have his own In Conversation session, covering everything from comedy and AI to evil production design and the TV shows that made him.

The alternative MacTaggart will be given by satirist, comedian, writer and actor Munya Chawawa.

Comedy icon Fey, star of 30 Rock and the creator of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and The Four Seasons, will chat with Irish TV Host Graham Norton on stage on the final day of the fest, which takes place next month. “Fey brings her distinct charm, wit and insight to this lively conversation with beloved broadcaster Graham Norton,” Edinburgh said.

Israeli Eurovision Song Contest contender Yuval Raphael faced a failed stage invasion during her performance at the Grand Final on Saturday night.

Swiss broadcaster Ssr, which hosts the telecast of the Eurovision competition, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that a crew member was hit with paint after a man and a woman attempted to get over the barrier around the stage at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel, Switzerland.

“At the end of the Israeli performance, a man and a woman tried to get over a barrier onto the stage. They were stopped. One of the two agitators threw paint and a crew member was hit. The crew member is fine and nobody was injured. The man and the woman were taken out of the venue and handed over to the police,” the Swiss broadcaster said in a statement.

The latest version of the Japanese format that has performed well in numerous countries including South Africa, Australia and Ireland where it is hosted by Trevor Noah, Rebel Wilson and Graham Norton respectively will launch next year on Amazon’s streamer worldwide.

A much beloved sci-fi franchise, Doctor Who has been one of the pillars of modern science fiction and is still, despite its ups and downs, a much beloved series with a worldwide following.

The series is known for its crossovers and while we have reported on many such moments in the past, it is time for something completely different, as the Monty Python guys would say.

Namely, it has been confirmed that the current Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will appear at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest to read the votes of the British jury during the contest.

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa will have the job of announcing the British jury’s points at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

The Guardian newspaper reports that Gatwa, who is currently starring as the 15th Doctor in the BBC’s long-running sci-fi drama, will follow in the footsteps of previous stars including Joanna Lumley, Nigella Lawson and Doctor Who alumna Catherine Tate.

Gatwa’s job on the night of the Eurovision Grand Final, to take place in Switzerland on Saturday May 17, comes alongside a special Eurovision-themed episode of Doctor Who airing on the same day, called ‘Interstellar Song Contest’ – where the Doctor visits a galaxy-wide singing competition.

BBC Eurovision presenters Graham Norton and Rylan will also appear in the special episode.

Dr Who showrunner Russell T Davies said in a statement:

The iconic comedian and host of “The Graham Norton Show” will guest star on an upcoming episode of “Doctor Who,” the BBC revealed on Friday.
