Angelina Jolie Wasn’t Considered Bankable Enough for Brad Pitt’s Se7en ‘Copy’ Starring The Greatest Living Actor
Image
Universal Pictures didn’t think Angelina Jolie was bankable enough to headline a gritty thriller alongside Denzel Washington, who was already an acclaimed actor (via SyFy). So, director Phillip Noyce struck a personal deal and put his resources on the line to cast Jolie in The Bone Collector.

The 1999 movie is based on Jeffrey Deaver’s bestselling novel, and stars Washington as Lincoln Ryme, a quadriplegic forensic expert, and Jolie as a police officer named Amelia Donaghy. The duo unravels a series of crimes across New York City, but despite a strong cast and intriguing plot, The Bone Collector has always been seen as a rip-off of Se7en.

Angelina Jolie And Denzel Washington's The Bone Collector Roles Came With A Stipulation
Image
Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.

In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime-fighting partner, Amelia Donaghy.

Denzel Washington’s Forgotten $151 Million Thriller With Angelina Jolie Is Quietly Dominating Streaming
Image
Denzel Washington will always be known for his work in The Equalizer franchise, which was spun off into a TV show, but long before he ever played Robert McCall, he starred alongside an Equalizer TV star in a serial killer thriller dominating streaming charts. Washington stars alongside Queen Latifah and Angelina Jolie in The Bone Collector, the 1999 film following a quadriplegic ex-homicide detective and his partners who try to hunt down a serial killer terrorizing New York. The Bone Collector is currently streaming on Prime Video in America and on Rakuten TV globally, where it’s one of the most popular movies in Lithuania among other countries. The film earned 30% from critics and 63% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $151 million at the box office against a $73 million budget.

The Bone Collector is based on the Jeffery Deaver book of the same name, and Jeremy Iacone wrote the script...

Prime Video’s Most Underrated Thriller Had Denzel Washington Scared to Death: “More sinister”
Image
Before we were privy to Denzel Washington’s advice on fame and star power, he was busy making a chilling thriller that was enough to scare even him. The Bone Collector stands as one of Washington’s most challenging roles yet. In a 2004 Total Film interview, Washington got candid about just how daunting the role was, saying:

I thought it was a very cerebral thriller and a different challenge as an actor. I had made films like Ricochet and The Pelican Brief in the past, but I think The Bone Collector was a lot scarier and more sinister than the other two. When I first saw the film myself, I was scared to death a few times. I think Phillip Noyce [the director] did an incredible job of creating a claustrophobic and haunting atmosphere.

While films like The Bone Collector and Se7en seem to be based on similar themes, the former remains criminally underrated to date.

How Denzel Washington Really Feels About The Bone Collector
Image
Phillip Noyce's 1999 serial killer thriller "The Bone Collector" wasn't the typical movie that Denzel Washington usually chose in the 1990s. Sure, one could argue that he made "Fallen" (another serial killer flick) just a year earlier, but in Gregory Hoblit's feature, he was an able-bodied and tough homicide detective calling the shots. It was the type of role that greatly suited his strengths and heroic screen presence. Meanwhile, in "The Bone Collector," he played a bedridden quadriplegic forensic analyst with a very limited set of skills. He had little to no leeway to rely on his emblematic swagger or physical mannerisms because he simply couldn't move his body apart from his head. Not as if that was a problem for Denzel — we damn well know by now how vast and impressive his range is — but the part provided him an unusual challenge that he embraced and made the most out of.

The Most Unrealistic Part Of James Gunn's Superman Isn't The Superhero – It's Far More Depressing
Image
Caution: this article contains spoilers for James Gunn's "Superman."

Right from the first scenes of James Gunn's new film "Superman," we know what the film's villain, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is up to. Naturally, Luthor hates Superman (David Corenswet), and has been using a cadre of computer experts, supervillain sidekicks, and a masked vigilante of his own to pummel the Man of Steel into the ground. Luthor, before the film has even begun, knows the secrets of Kryptonite, and has carefully studied Superman's fight moves, allowing him to best the superhero in hand-to-hand combat (via the remote-controlled villain Ultraman).

Lex Luthor is also depicted as a tech billionaire with his hands deep inside the world's media. There are brief montages in "Superman" showing pundits parroting Luthor's anti-superman rhetoric on a Twitter-like social media site. Luthor doesn't necessarily own the social media, but it's easy to see the parallels...

Se7en Turns 30: Brad Pitt’s Best Thriller Inspired 63% Rt Denzel Washington Movie That Felt Wasted
Image
Se7en is David Fincher’s timeless classic, and its influence can be felt in most crime thrillers that came after it, for example, Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie’s starrer, The Bone Collector. The two movies feel like they belong to the same universe, but ultimately, the latter felt short.

The Phillip Noyce directorial feels like a shadow of a masterpiece released just four years earlier because both movies have grim crime plots, twisted killers, and neo-noir aesthetics. Despite their similarities, only one of them became a defining entry in the thriller genre and remains one of the most critically revered movies of all time.

What elements does the Denzel Washington thriller draw from Se7en? A still from The Bone Collector | Credits: Universal Pictures

Emilia Clarke’s Darkest Role Was in This 6-Year-Old Movie Based on a Real-Life Story That’s Streaming on Peacock
Image
It’s not a surprise if no one has ever heard about Emilia Clarke starring in the 2019 crime thriller movie Above Suspicion, directed by Phillip Noyce. Perhaps, to this day, only a handful have seen it. Well, it’s nothing like her role in Game of Thrones, but it’s still dark, gritty, and quite depressing.

Based on Joe Sharkey’s non-fiction book about the killing of Susan Smith, Above Suspicion tells the harrowing experiences of a drug addict woman who became an FBI informant after meeting a rookie agent. Her affair with the criminologist would lead to a downward spiral of betrayal, violence, and death.

Emilia Clarke brought Susan Smith’s tragic story to life in Above Suspicion

We can consider Emilia Clarke’s role in Game of Thrones dark as well because, after all, she went through a lot of hardships that even in the end, she failed...

Jean-Claude Van Damme, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung in Bloodsport (1988)
Bloodsport: A24 in negotiations for the remake rights
Jean-Claude Van Damme, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung in Bloodsport (1988)
Cannon Films weren’t satisfied with their 1988 martial arts tournament movie Bloodsport, but when they reluctantly sent it out into the world in 1988 it proved to be a big hit, launching Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career as an action hero. The film was followed by three sequels, none of which starred Van Damme – and for the last couple of decades, there have been rumblings about a revival. Twenty years ago, Bloodsport co-writer Sheldon Lettich tried to get a film called Bloodsport: A New Beginning off the ground, but the project fell apart. In 2011, Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm) was attached to direct a “reinvention,” working from a screenplay by The Karate Kid creator Robert Mark Kamen. In 2013, James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) replaced Noyce at the helm. The project never made it into production. In 2019, there was a rumor that John Wick directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were considering making a Bloodsport remake.

Critic’s Appreciation: Val Kilmer, an Unclassifiable Heartthrob Who Always Had an Edge
Image
For anyone who grew up watching movies in the 1980s, Val Kilmer, who died Tuesday, was something of an anomaly among the young Hollywood actors whose careers blew up during that decade.

Compared to Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Emilio Estevez, Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack or Tom Hanks, to name a handful of stars who emerged back then, Kilmer was not exactly a strapping action hero nor a smooth heartbreak kid. Nor did he come across as a brooding Method-style thespian, or as someone who could provide instant comic relief onscreen.

In some ways, Kilmer was all of these things at once, and therefore unclassifiable. He was mostly a great character actor with the looks of a leading man, capable of melting into roles that almost invariably had an edge to them.

His most memorable films, including Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone and Heat, were popular hits in...

Bruce Willis Almost Starred In A Sci-Fi Remake Of A Classic John Wayne Western
Image
Whenever Roger Ebert saw a limp Hollywood remake of a classic movie, the esteemed film critic used to lament that studios had it all wrong. They shouldn't be redoing movies that were already brilliant, but, rather, revisiting films with promising premises that, for whatever reason, didn't work the first time out. While this may sound like perfectly reasonable advice, studios typically aren't keen to throw money at projects that already failed once. That's how executives get fired.

This is how we get unwanted, undercooked remakes like 2006's "The Omen," 2012's "Total Recall," and 2014's "RoboCop." The originals were smart, zeitgeisty genre flicks from top-notch directors, while the second go-rounds were sweaty retreads with no point of view and, thus, no reason for being -- but at least the execs who greenlit these movies could defend them on the grounds of brand recognition. Had they gone down in flames with a remake of,...

Douglas Hodge attends the Opening Night of Sting's new musical The Last Ship.
Jack Ryan movie | John Krasinski stars, more names sign up
Douglas Hodge attends the Opening Night of Sting's new musical The Last Ship.
Douglas Hodge and Betty Gabriel are among the recruits for the new Jack Ryan film, starring John Krasinski. More here.

The cast of the new Jack Ryan movie is beginning to expand, with filming presumably now not too far away.

John Krasinski follows Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine by playing Ryan on the big screen. In his case, he’s had a fair amount of practice too, having played Ryan on the hit television series, that’s cunningly entitled Jack Ryan.

It may well be that the new film, which is being backed by Amazon MGM, will also go by that name as well. It’s been known for a while that John Krasinski, Sienna Miller, Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly are in the ensemble.

Now, some further additions have also been announced. Betty Gabriel, JJ Feild, Max Beesley and Douglas Hodge are signing on the dotted line.

HanWay Acquires More Than 100 Films From The Cohen Film Collection Including Buster Keaton & Merchant Ivory Pics
Image
Exclusive: HanWay Films has expanded its classics library after being appointed to represent The Cohen Film Collection.

The library of Cohen Media Group’s founder, Charles S. Cohen, comprises more than one hundred restored classic titles spanning from the silent era to the present day, including The Buster Keaton Collection and The Merchant Ivory Collection.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Cohen Media Group is the owner of HanWay, having acquired the company in 2022.

Late last year Charles Cohen’s media group hit choppy waters when the company was forced to sell multiple assets including British arthouse exhibitor and distributor Curzon to Fortress Investment Group. The company was acquired in a foreclosure auction involving multiple Cohen assets, including the Landmark cinema chain. Fortress had lent Cohen $534M but sued him last year for default. Cohen acquired Curzon in late 2019 amid a buying spree by the U.S. real estate developer.

Nicole Kidman's Breakout Action Thriller Movie Was Nearly Stolen By This Actor's Brilliantly Unhinged Performance
Image
The year was 1989, and a very young, fresh-faced Nicole Kidman was on her way to becoming a household name in the entertainment industry. This was also the pre-Tom Cruise Days of Thunder, Far and Away, and Eyes Wide Shut era of the early to mid-90s that almost took her career in the wrong direction. When she landed the lead role of Rae Ingram in director Phillip Noyce's Dead Calm, it would prove to be a breakout performance that put everyone on notice that she would be around for a while. Here we are, 35 years later, and she is still regarded as an A-lister and one of the top talents in Hollywood. But what may have caught many by surprise is that she was nearly outshined by a young American actor, Billy Zane, whose run as a psychopath stranded at sea was almost as noteworthy as the star turn for Kidman.

“She is an average kisser”: After Getting Insulted, Sharon Stone Belittled Daniel Baldwin Because of Her on Set Fight With His Brother
Image
Hollywood has seen its fair share of feuds, but few can rival the fiery clash between Sharon Stone and Billy Baldwin. Behind the scenes, this rift was born from both personal and professional tensions. Like a movie script gone wrong, the conflict simmered for years before reaching the boiling point.

Sharon Stone and William Baldwin in Sliver (1993) | Credit: Paramount Pictures

The roots of their dispute stretch back to 1993, when both actors starred in Sliver, a film directed by Phillip Noyce. Known for its steamy scenes and intensity, the thriller was as much about the drama off-camera as it was on.

But what really fueled the fire was a shocking suggestion from Sliver’s producer, Robert Evans. But the story doesn’t end with Stone’s words. Enter Daniel Baldwin, Billy’s brother, who took to The Tonight Show to air his grievances about Sharon Stone’s alleged unprofessional behavior during the film’s production.

Lithuanian Drama ‘Toxic’ Wins Top Prize at 55th International Film Festival of India
Image
Lithuanian filmmaker Saulė Bliuvaitė’s “Toxic” took home the best film award at the 55th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa. The jury, headed by Indian director Ashutosh Gowariker, recognized the film for its portrayal of adolescence and economic hardship.

Previously, at Locarno, “Toxic” won not only the Golden Leopard for Best Film in the fest’s premier International Competition — from a jury chaired by Austrian auteur Jessica Hausner — but also, in an unusual double, the top prize in the separately juried First Feature Competition.

Variety‘s positive review of “Toxic” described the film as “sobering but not without glimmers of tenderness and humor as female friendship takes root in a hopeless place,” adding that its “alternation between chilly composure and kinetic movement roughly corresponds with [the protagonist’s] wavering sense of self.”

Romanian director Bogdan Muresanu nabbed the best director prize for “The New Year That Never Came,” a multi-narrative feature set during a revolution.

Phillip Noyce Strategizes How to Survive the Disruption of New Hollywood: ‘We Need a Miracle’
Image
Phillip Noyce, the ace Australian director behind “The Quiet American” “Salt and “Rabbit Proof Fence,” is no ordinary storyteller. His genial, almost bumbling, demeanor belies a quick brain and an avid user of technology.

Both were on display in Goa at the International Film Festival of India where he is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award, and where Monday he delivered a memorable masterclass.

His method of explaining how to succeed in the new Hollywood, passes through a description of the dire state of film pre-sales through to on-stage trust games and extracts from an unsuccessful pilot.

Noyce’s analysis of the U.S. film industry’s crisis is that production was ramped up during Covid and then scaled back; that theatrical box office is waning and causing the prices of bankable actors and pre-sales values of unmade films to decline; and that during the writers and actors’ strikes...

Ace Cinematographer John Seale Says Scrappy, Low-Budget Origins Provided Lifelong Lessons: ‘Give Me 10 Minutes, I Can Sort That Out’
Image
John Seale, the Australian-born cinematographer who won an Oscar for “The English Patient” and has four other nominations for “Witness,” “Rain Man,” “Cold Mountain” and 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” was one of the highest-profile international guests at the ongoing International Film Festival of India.

In a Saturday masterclass, he examined multiple angles of cinematography and the wider film industry. Topics ranged from working with actors, his preference for being a lighting-cameraman, through to the use of multiple cameras and making sure that he approaches every film as a new and different challenge.

His descriptions of an early career in television, working on low-budgets and the breakout 1980s successes of Australian filmmakers were both a happy trip down memory lane and instructive for those people working outside the comfort zone of the Hollywood system.

“In the early 1960s, the Australian film industry was zilch. There was no feature film industry to speak of at all.

Australia-India Screen Ties Strengthen as Migrant Drama ‘Home Before Night’ Heads to Film Bazaar
Image
Ana Tiwary’s Sydney-based production company indiVisual films – international is bringing “Home Before Night,” a cross-cultural drama with sci-fi elements, to India’s Film Bazaar’s co-production Market.

“It is such a hauntingly beautiful story that mixes drama with elements of science fiction and authentically represents the experiences of migrants in Australia,” says Tiwary (“Rhapsody of Love”).

Written and directed by Kalani Gacon (“Sapana ko Awaz (The Sound of Dreaming)”), the film follows two women’s intertwined journeys: Chanda, a Nepali aged-care worker in Australia wrestling with permanent residency decisions, and Orana, an Australian of Nepali heritage searching for her estranged father. Their stories converge through a memory-donation program designed for homesick migrants.

“I want people to leave with an appreciation for the spaces between—those subtle, often overlooked places where identities intersect and cultures blend,” says Gacon, who drew from personal experience. “Like my protagonist, Orana, I, too, travelled...

10 Overlooked Thrillers From The 1980s That Are Worth A Watch
Image
The 1980s were a successful decade for the thriller genre, and produced plenty of hidden gems. Some of the best suspense-ridden movies in the history of cinema debuted during that period. The period opened with a disturbing masterpiece of fear with The Shining, and it proceeded to give the audience more cinematographic gems. While some 80s cult classic movies like The Blade Runner are still remembered and praised, others appear to be largely overlooked by today's public.

Perhaps they were overshadowed by bigger names when they first came out, or they simply faded into obscurity over the years. Like many subsequent underrated 90s thrillers, plenty of great representatives of this genre from the 1980s deserve a second look. Audiences, especially those who are attracted to the dark allure of psychologically disturbing and emotionally intriguing stories, deserve the opportunity to rediscover these hidden treasures.

How Angelina Jolie's Test Of Loyalty In 2010 Action Movie Is Accurate Explained By Expert
Image
Angelina Jolie remains one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood, even though she doesn't work quite as regularly today as she did in the first decade of the 2000s. After starring in Girl, Interrupted (1999) Jolie went on to star in movies like Alexander (2004), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005), The Good Shepherd (2006), and Wanted (2008). Though she is widely known for films across a variety of genres, Jolie, especially at that time, had a reputation as something of an action star.

Jolie's role as video game adventurer Lara Croft in two Tomb Raider movies cemented her action hero persona, and subsequent roles in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Wanted only further solidified this. More recently, the actor returned as an action star for movies like Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021) and Eternals (2021). One specific subgenre that Jolie has worked in sparingly is the espionage thriller, but her work in this space is...

Sorry Angelina Jolie But Charlize Theron Has Taken the Throne of Best Female Action Star of Hollywood
Image
When The Old Guard began streaming on Netflix, not many would have anticipated that it would go on to become one of the top 10 most successful original launches in the platform’s history. It did, making it a project Netflix was willing to make a sequel of. But that wasn’t the only thing the movie was memorable for.

Charlize Theron, portraying the role of Andy would slay yet again in an action role, a phenomenon that was being repeated constantly. The Monster star had already begun to carve a reputation for herself with Mad Max: Fury Road. Add to that some other projects along the way, and fans believed that they she had dethroned another great from the seat of the best Female action star in Hollywood.

Phillip Noyce's 2010 spy thriller "Salt" is a corker of an action movie, with all the requisite thrills, fights, and plot twists that should come naturally to the genre. It's not until you watch a film like "Salt" that you realize how poorly other spy films have done it. It's that good. Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, an experienced CIA operative who has seen a lot of time in the field. At the beginning of the film, the CIA takes in a Russian defector and Evelyn is assigned to interrogate him. He reveals that there's a secret Russian mole inside the CIA, stating that her name ... is Evelyn Salt. Oh no!

Epic Aboriginal Resistance Tale ‘First Warrior’ Attracts A-List Talent
Warwick Thornton
Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton is directing an upcoming movie about Pemulwuy, a significant figure in Australian history. The film, titled “First Warrior,” will tell the epic story of Pemulwuy’s leadership battling British colonization in the late 1700s. Sam Worthington and Jason Clarke are attached to star, and producers are looking for an actor to portray Pemulwuy.

Pemulwuy was a leader of the Bidjigal Aboriginal group near modern-day Sydney. For over a decade, he organized resistance against settlers moving onto traditional Indigenous lands. His efforts are regarded as some of the earliest, strongest opposition to colonization in Australia. Yet this pivotal period receives little attention historically.

The film aims to shine a light on Pemulwuy’s remarkable story. Thornton says the script captures “an important story” and he’s honored to be involved. Thornton has won acclaim for movies including “Samson & Delilah” and “Sweet Country.” Aboriginal creatives hold central...

Sam Worthington, Jason Clarke to Star in Warwick Thornton’s Aboriginal Epic ‘First Warrior’

Leading Australian filmmaker Warwick Thornton has signed on to direct First Warrior, an epic feature about Australian Aboriginal resistance fighter Pemulwuy. Aussie stars Sam Worthington (Avatar, Hacksaw Ridge) and Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer, Zero Dark Thirty) have boarded the project in lead parts, while a casting search is said to be underway for the lead role of Pemulwuy.

A Bidjigal man of the Sydney tribes, Pemulwuy led a 12-year resistance against British settlers moving into his people’s traditional lands as Australia was colonized in the late 1700s.

One of Australia’s most admired directors, Thornton broke through in 2009 when his directorial debut, Samson & Delilah won the Cannes Film Festival’s Camera d’Or prize. His 2017 film Sweet Country took home Venice’s Special Jury Prize and his most recent work, The New Boy, starring Cate Blanchett, premiered at Cannes last year.

Among the guests were fellow Aussie directors Phillip Noyce and Sophia Banks as well as reps from Netflix and Universal.
