With the papal conclave meeting last week, Stephen Colbert brought in an expert on the subject who also happens to be a classic Saturday Night Live character. Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello) graced the Ed Sullivan Theater on The Late Show last week, delivering his traditionally offbeat predictions, none of which actually came to pass. Colbert is a famously devout Catholic, but he clearly doesn't have any problem poking a little fun at the church.

The chain-smoking Sarducci came out looking for an ashtray: although Colbert insisted that he couldn't smoke on network television, Sarducci told him that current Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had decreed that menthols were okay, and also good for polio. He also offered his opinions on the movie Conclave: he wishes it was animated, because if the cardinals had moved like Sonic the Hedgehog, it would have been half an hour shorter.

After retreating from the public eye for nearly 15 years, Father Guido Sarducci appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night to share his insights on the election of the new Pope. As the senior gossip columnist for the Vatican newspaper, a one-time Saturday Night Live regular and the alter ego of comedian/writer Don Novello, Sarducci is uniquely positioned to comment on the conclave happening in Rome to anoint a successor to Pope Francis.

Colbert reviewed some of the favorites for the job, such as Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Luis Antonio Tagle. But Sarducci says it’s anybody’s ball game at this point. “There’s a number of frontrunners, but anyone could get it,” he offered.

As proof, Sarducci pointed to a controversial conclave in the 1750s. “For months, they would have 90 ballots. These guys just want to go home, but they can’t pick anybody,” he explained.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the movies, TV shows, and live sports that will be available on the Max streaming service in May. The Max May 2025 lineup includes the drama series Duster, the film Mountainhead, and the two-part documentary Pee-wee as Himself.

The film hits streaming following a successful awards season culminating at the Oscars, where it won multiple awards including Best Actor for lead Adrien Brody, Best Original Score for Daniel Blumberg and Best Cinematography for Lol Crawley.

However, the report states that discussions are still in the very early stages, and nothing will happen until DiCaprio’s deal closes.

THR adds that Brody could be up for the role of Shelly Saltman, the “author and sports promoter who was viciously attacked by Knievel by an aluminum bat.” Chazelle and DiCaprio have been working on the project for quite some time, and production could even get underway this summer, assuming a deal can be reached with DiCaprio. How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?

While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.

Last year’s winner, Oppenheimer, holds a formidable 93 percent, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to The Holdovers, which has a rating of 97 percent. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps its chances.

Picturehouse Central saw the arrival of Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist this evening for the film’s UK Premiere. The epic film has conquered America’s film-going crowd over the last few weeks, and now it’s our turn to see what all the fuss is about. Brady Corbet, whose post-World War II epic The Brutalist has been racking up wins on the awards circuit since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, won Best Director on Sunday at the Golden Globes.

Corbet, who won the same honor at Venice, beat out a stacked nominees list tonight that included Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light).

Adrien Brody almost missed out on his role in 'The Brutalist'.The 51-year-old actor is tipped to win a string of awards for his portrayal of Hungarian architect Laszlo Toth in director Brady Corbet's historical epic but he wasn't first choice for the role only for the part to eventually be offered to him after the project faded into the background for some time.He told W magazine: "Brady Corbet sent me a script, which blew me away. It is an enormous piece of material. We met, and I shared with him how moved I was by it and how right I am for it for numerous reasons. "But initially, it ended up not coming to me. In the span of two December weeks, Alessandro Nivola made three memorable impressions on the big screen.

Beginning with Brady Corbet’s Oscar-contending The Brutalist, Nivola signed on to play Attila Miller just days into 2020’s pandemic. At the time, production was still expected to begin three weeks later, but as we can all attest, those best-laid plans quickly turned into three years. Thus, Nivola became one of only a few holdovers from Corbet’s 2020 cast, as Adrien Brody then took over the lead role of Attila’s cousin, László Toth. The latter is a celebrated Hungarian-Jewish architect who, having narrowly survived the Holocaust, emigrates to the States where Attila provides him with a bed and a job on behalf of his modest Philadelphia-based furniture store.
