Nicolas Cage is a Dad named Paul in this post apocalyptic world. The invasion that is leading to the destruction of the humanity is a highly mutant race of aliens that are born under the earth and attack the above ground habitants from within that position. This affects the twin boys Joseph and Thomas (Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins) and they are reluctant survivalists, with Joseph being particularly jealous of a bunkered and wealthier family down the road, where the lovely teenage Charlotte (Sadie Soverall) resides. Can the few survivors continue to exist in such a world?

Benjamin Brewer’s Arcadian runs on the sort of day/night mechanic found in many survival video games. When the sun is up, it’s an intimate family drama featuring a trio of strong performances and a script that never says more than it has to. And when the sun goes down, it turns into a strikingly effective creature feature, starring some of the most inventively designed and viscerally realized monsters to scuttle across the screen in some time.

Arcadian takes place in a patch of idyllic countryside that lives up to the film’s title. Paul (Nicolas Cage) and his twin sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), live in a farmhouse surrounded by rolling green hills. It’s the kind of horror that will actually make you jump or, as the audience did during its SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere, gasp. The film features a small, but crucial role for Nicolas Cage, whose opening scene, featuring him running to get to his infant sons, sets the tone for what's to come in the story. Arcadian may falter in its story details, building some character tension that is never fully fleshed out, but it succeeds in creating a gripping, tense experience that is elevated by its disturbing creatures.

One of the most memorable horror blockbusters in recent memory was director John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place." It remains impressive that the guy who played Jim on "The Office" crafted such a refreshing film (with lots of help from screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods) that has spawned an entire franchise. What tends to happen in the realm of horror is that a string of imitators will follow any major success. Well, the time has finally come as "Arcadian" has unquestionably taken more than a little inspiration from Krasinski's 2018 thriller. That said, this is far more than just a cheap imitation. Moreover, it serves as a showcase for one of our most compelling living actors: Nicolas Cage.

In Benjamin Brewer’s Arcadian, the Earth’s soundscape is full of signs. The rustling leaves and frenetic bird calls are the noises of daylight’s safety, whereas the stillness of the night warns of threats. Brewer’s film harnesses the uneasy tension of a post-apocalyptic reality where no one knows what happened at the end of the world.

Premiering at SXSW, Arcadian observes Paul (Nicolas Cage) and his two sons, Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins) and Joseph (Jaeden Martell), navigating life in a recognizable but quieter version of Earth. Their routines rarely vary. In the morning, they forage around the forest for wood; salvage scrapes from ruined ships in abandoned ports; and run other errands around the house. At night, they say a prayer over dinner and check the locks. A cracked window or a door left ajar is an invitation for the monsters — impressively designed creatures with black veiny flesh...

“I wanted to experiment: can I develop a family which was not unlike my own upbringing?” says Nicolas Cage, while talking to Den of Geek about his new movie Arcadian, which premiered at SXSW 2024. “My dad did most of the heavy lifting, he did the raising because my mom sadly couldn’t be around. So it was just my father, and in this case, myself and my older brother. I saw that family dynamic in the [Elia] Kazan picture, East of Eden.”

From that description, you might imagine Arcadian to be an austere drama, something that takes place in a rustic farm house and focuses on the complex relationship between a father struggling to do right by his two boys. And you’d mostly be right… mostly.

But then Cage completes his thought. “And then I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting if this little family nucleus was contending with...

Here's my pitch to sell you on director Benjamin Brewer's Arcadian: it's A Quiet Place but with Nicolas Cage and better creature elements. The last part came as a huge shocker. Writer Michael Nilon sets the stage for an eerily familiar doomsday scenario that feels like Gareth Edwards' Monsters at first but quickly finds its roots as a sibling to John Krasinski's alien invasion franchise. Arcadian does take a bit to reach its full momentum, not as dynamically engaging as a survivalist drama, but once the monsters reveal themselves? Brewer executes what could be a knockout audition to direct the next A Quiet Place sequel, should there be more on the horizon.

One of the genre films headed to the upcoming SXSW 2024 is titled Arcadian, but you may better know the film under its previous title: Sand and Stones. Nicolas Cage stars in the post apocalyptic genre movie, and up above you’ll find the very first image from the film.

In Arcadian, which was shot in Ireland, “After a catastrophic event depopulates the world, a father and his two sons must survive their dystopian environment while being threatened by mysterious creatures that emerge at night.” Jaeden Martell (It 2017), Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space) and Sadie Soverall (Fate: The Winx Saga) also star.

Ben Brewer (The Trust) directed the film, written by Mike Nilon (Braven). Producers include David Wulf, Braxton Pope, Nicolas Cage, Mike Nilon, Arianne Fraser, Delphine Perrier.

Arcadian will have its World Premiere at SXSW this coming March, and we expect to learn more about the film in the coming months.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival, taking place in Austin, Texas, was already shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest events for horror. Today, the festival has announced even more genre titles to their film lineup, ensuring a densely packed slate of genre fare.

Among the headliners, you’ll find Neon’s Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, joined by Monkey Paw’s Monkey Man and A24’s comedy Y2K featuring effects by Weta Worshop. The three new additions to the fest’s lineup are joined by a slew of upcoming titles that pique our interest. And that’s on top of the what’s been previously announced.

SXSW top brass have announced an additional 50 titles in the remaining line-up for next month, with world premieres of Alice Lowe’s Timestalker, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, and Sydney Sweeney starrer Immaculate among the selection.

Playing in Headliner are Monkey Man, Patel’s feature directorial debut revenge story; Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, which Neon will distribute in the US and stars Sweeney as a nun; and A24’s New Year’s Eve comedy sci-fi Y2K starring Rachel Zegler.

South by Southwest’s 2024 edition just added some more star-studded movies in its second wave of programming including the highly anticipated Jordan Peele Monkeypaw production, Monkey Man, starring and directed by Dev Patel, the Sydney Sweeney nun movie Immaculate, the new Nicolas Cage horror movie Arcadian, and Musica starring Riverdale’s Camila Mendes.

For Peele, Sweeney, and Cage it’s another trip back to the Texas Capital. Peele world premiered his second horror directorial, Us, at SXSW back in 2019, while Sweeney was in Austin last year for her movie inde road movie Americana. Cage brought down the house in SXSW’s return from Covid edition in 2022 with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

A24, which world premiered their ultimate Best Picture Oscar winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once at SXSW 2022, is back as well with SNL alum Kyle Mooney’s feature directorial debut, Y2K, the Colman Domingo headliner Sing Sing with its U.

The lineup for the 2024 SXSW Film & TV festival has been announced, with the additions of Dev Patel’s action thriller Monkey Man as a headliner. Also joining the lineup is the Sydney Sweeney starring nun horror Immaculate and Y2K, the comedy from SNL alum Kyle Mooney that stars Rachel Zegler.

These films join previously announced centerpiece screenings including the Ryan Gosling starrer The Fall Guy, Anne Hathaway romance The Idea of You, and the Jake Gyllenhaal led Road House remake, the latter of which will open the fest.

As for television, the Bon Jovi docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story will bow at the fest along with Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told. These are joining the previously announced premiere of Netflix’s Three Body Problem.

The 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival has unveiled its full lineup ahead of the March 8 opening night.

Taking place in Austin, Texas from March 8 through 16, the annual festival has announced its Headliner films including Dev Patel’s directorial debut “Monkey Man,” “Immaculate” starring Sydney Sweeney, and “SNL” alum Kyle Mooney’s comedy “Y2K.” These join the previously announced lineup of titles.

“Monkey Man” stars writer/director Patel as Kid, an anonymous man who seeks revenge against the government leaders who murdered his mother. Oscar winner Jordan Peele produces the feature and moved the project from Netflix to Universal, reportedly so the movie could have a theatrical release.

Nicolas Cage is a post-apocalyptic survivalist in a first-look image from the movie Arcadian. The prolific Cage is already off to a hot start in 2023, having recently starred in The Old Way, his first-ever Western. And later this year, the actor will take on one of movie history’s most iconic roles, playing Dracula in the highly-anticipated horror-comedy Renfield.

Aside from those two films plus the recently-teased Sympathy for the Devil, also lined up for Cage is a trip to the post-apocalypse in the movie Arcadian, which just dropped a first-look image (via THR).

Joining Cage in the image is his co-star Jaeden Martell, who previously starred in Knives Out and It. Also appearing is Maxwell Jenkins, who starred in the Netflix Lost in Space series.

The Oscar winner — soon to be seen playing Dracula in Universal’s Renfield with Nicholas Hoult — stars alongside Jaeden Martell (It, Knives Out), Maxwell Jenkins (Dear Edward, Lost in Space) and Sadie Soverall (Fate: The Winx Saga, Saltburn) in the film, directed by Ben Brewer, who was the lead visual effects artist for Everything Everywhere All At Once (and reunites with Cage following the filmmaker’s feature debut The Trust).

Highland Film Group is handling worldwide rights to the feature, which recently wrapped production in Dublin, Ireland and is now in post-production.

Deadline first reported the news, with the website also noting that the survival thriller comes from Highland Film Group. Production kicks off next week in Dublin, Ireland.
