Take a deep dive into the making of Alex Proyas‘ 1994 cult classic with The Crow: The Definitive History.

Trick or Treat Studios Brings ‘Maniac Cop’, ‘Leprechaun’, ‘Hellraiser’ & More Figures to Toy Fair
Image
The big winner of Toy Fair 2025 on the horror front may very well be Trick or Treat Studios, who brought some big time surprises to the convention floor this morning.

Upcoming licensed toys from Trick or Treat Studios include Maniac Cop, Hellraiser, Leprechaun, Terrifier 2, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Army of Darkness!

The most surprising reveal has to be the Maniac Cop action figure, which is headed our way in 2026. This marks the first officially licensed Maniac Cop figure we have ever seen.

Trick or Treat’s Hellraiser wave, meanwhile, will include Pinhead, Chatterer, Butterball, and Female Cenobite, with unpainted prototypes on display at Toy Fair this weekend.

And yes, we’re even getting a Warwick Davis Leprechaun figure from Trick or Treat Studios, along with a wave of toys based on George A. Romero’s zombie classic Day of the Dead.

Other upcoming figures from the company...

‘The Crow’s 2024 Remake Is Steaming Success on Starz After Being a Box Office Flop
Image
Dubbed by some as “one of 2024’s most unnecessary remakes,” the new adaptation of The Crow has soared on the Starz streaming platform, dominating the chart to take the top spot several months after having its wings clipped at the box office.

The 1994 version of The Crow gained cult status not only for its haunting and dark story of love and death, but for the tragic circumstances surrounding star Brandon Lee’s untimely death. Fans bonded with the film’s blend of Gothic romance and vigilante action, and it is hard to argue that the atmosphere of the film was lightning in a bottle that could not be replicated in any subsequent sequels. Fast-forward three decades, and Hollywood made the unwelcome announcement that the film was getting a “reimagining” starring Bill Skarsgård.

Every Villain Played by Bill Skarsgård (Including Nosferatu), Ranked
Image
There are only three instances when Bill Skarsgård has portrayed a real antagonist in a film, but he's known for playing villainous characters. Skarsgård excels at these roles so much that people often intentionally cast him for certain roles that require him to tap into the villain side.

Best known as the actor behind the iconic Pennywise in the latest Stephen King It remake, Skarsgård has only gotten into playing villains in recent years. Before Pennywise, he played many innocent characters in films and television shows. After Pennywise, Skarsgård has taken on some very interesting roles that feature some sort of transformation. His most recent work as Nosferatu in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake also showcases another level of acting.

Bill Skarsgård Made The Crow Much Darker

2024's The Crow made several changes to the previous version, including giving its main villain supernatural powers. Bill Skarsgård's Eric Draven started off the film as the protagonist,...

Comic Book Movie With 87% Rt Score Is Coming To Streaming After Disappointing 2024 Reimagining
Image
2024 might be the year of the film adaptation. While the year has seen numerous highs and lows, adaptations seem to be at the heart of the 2024 release calendar. While children's films sequels such as Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 have dominated the box office, so too have adaptations like It Ends With Us and Wicked. The abundance of adaptations over original content is often a criticism of the state of Hollywood right now, but the 2024 box office has shown that these films still do well commercially.

This year has also seen a number of comic book adaptations. Most notably, this includes Deadpool & Wolverine, a Marvel Comics adaptation that features the now-canonized titular MCU characters. Not all comic adaptations are created equally, however, as this year's Madame Web bombed at the box office and among critics. This summer also saw the release of a non-mcu comic book movie that took...

Watch the Cult-Favorite Film That Inspired One of the Year’s Most Hated Remakes Next Month on Streaming
Image
Bill Skarsgård may currently be bringing unbridled terror to audiences everywhere with his turn as the titular character in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, but the rest of the year hasn’t been incredibly kind to the It star. At the tail-end of the summer, Skarsgård took on another beloved role, this time through his leading performance in Rupert Sanders’ The Crow. The latest remake to twist itself through Hollywood’s reboot machine took a page from Alexander Proyas’ 1994 film of the same name, which itself was an adaptation of James O’Barr’s comic book series. The reboot’s flight path from conversation to screen was a lengthy one, with audiences heading to cinemas with mixed feelings about what to expect from Sanders’ take. Unfortunately, the remake fell out of the sky, earning an abysmal 22% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes against the original’s 87%. Soon, those hoping to get the reimagining’s...

10 Superhero Movies Released in 2024, Which Deserved More Love
Image
It’s safe to say even before the beginning of 2024, the superhero genre had hit a rough patch. Fatigue, oversaturation, some lackluster releases – throw in some industry strikes – and suddenly, superhero films didn’t feel as invincible as they once did. Despite all that, studios looked to recover and add some freshness to the genre this year.

Every earth in every universe is heading for oblivion | Warner Bros.

While some films flew under the radar, and others were overshadowed by bigger names or negative PR, they all had their merits (however nitpicky it may be), even if audiences didn’t always show up. So, let’s dive into 10 superhero movies from 2024 that deserved more love—and why you might want to give them a second chance.

Every 2024 Comic Book Movie Released In Theaters Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
2024 is very nearly at an end and, if you're a comic book movie fan, you might be glad about that.

Following last year's Hollywood strikes, the likes of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* were pushed into next year. That left us with one MCU movie, three titles from Sony's Spider-Man Universe, the last DC movie from the previous regime, and a couple of unwanted reboots.

So, yeah, this ranking wasn't easy.

2025 looks to be considerably better but 2024 isn't over yet and now that Kraven the Hunter is in theaters, we're finally able to see how all these movies compared...and we're sure you'll have some thoughts on where they land.

To see where we've ranked 2024's comic book movies, click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

7. Joker: Folie à Deux

The Crow's Brandon Lee Tragedy, Explained
Image
When fans learned of The Crow's 2024 re-imagining, many were skeptical. It did get stuck in developmental hell, with Jason Momoa's Crow never coming to fruition. However, Momoa's exit paved the way for Bill Skarsgård to take up the face paint in this latest adaptation of James O'Barr's 1989 comic book.

Despite the new movie's potential to attract a new generation of fans, it's hard to match (let alone surpass) the standard set by the 1994 original. The Crow, directed by Alex Proyas, remains one of the most popular movies that blends gothic horror with crime and suspense. Sadly, it was also impacted by the tragic death of its star, Brandon Lee.

Updated on December 3, 2024, by Robert Vaux: The failed 2024 reboot of The Crow has returned attention to the original, which remains the definitive version of James O'Barr's original graphic novel for reasons that have little to do with the tragic death of its star.

Quick Links What was The Crow: Stairway to Heaven? How The Crow: Stairway to Heaven Became Acclaimed What The Crow: Stairway to Heaven Has to Say About the 2024 Remake Why The Crow (2024) Failed

With The Crow's 2024 remake now released, few realize it's not the franchise's first resurrection. Immortalized by its legacy, The Crow's enduring love always ensures its inevitable return, whether in theaters or through other mediums. The first remake of The Crow presents a curious case, aiming to expand the mythology and retell Eric Draven's story. ‘The Crow’ 2024 Ending Explained And Movie Recap: Did Eric Finally Reunite With Shelly?
Image
Every once in a while, that one single remake, reboot, or sequel entry of a successful, beloved movie gets released, which absolutely destroys the legacy of the original by becoming a failure of such proportions that it becomes hard to even comprehend what the thought process was behind coming up with something so ludicrous. The Crow (2024), starring Bill Skarsgård, a remake of the late Brandon Lee starring cult classic The Crow (1994), is such a movie, which is so bad we are having a tough time finding any silver lining whatsoever. The buzz surrounding the movie was rather negative from the very beginning, but nothing could have prepared us for the dumpster fire of a movie this one turned out to be. There is no sense of coherence in the plot, no effort put into making the characters likable, or even relatable, stylization gone down the drain, and the less we talk about the creative decisions,...

Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs in The Crow (2024)
The Crow - Marko Stojiljkovic - 19282
Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs in The Crow (2024)
Remakes and especially reboots rarely make sense. There are exceptions to the rule that have the aura of timeless stories that need to be retold from time to time, maybe even for each new generation. But still, reboots are usually uncalled for. The new, uncalled-for reading of The Crow, penned by Zach Baylin and William Josef Schneider, and directed by Rupert Sanders, comes close to the top of that list, as it doesn’t do any justice either to James O’Barr’s comic book series or to Alex Proyas’ 1994 cult classic.

The developmental hell the movie was stuck in for a decade and half, with multiple screenwriters, directors and lead actors attached to it, really shows, from its poorly timed release to the reception from both critics and wider audiences. Although it is not the worst movie of the year – or of the month for that matter - proceed...

‘The Crow’ Franchise Recap: Everything That Happened In First 4 Movies
Image
Art imitates life, a universal truth that reverberated in a most tragic sense in the creation of James O’Barr’s timeless gothic vigilante series, The Crow. The ex-marine writer created the Crow, a common man wronged by a cruel world who lost his own life and that of his beloved, resurrected as an avenging angel of darkness to exact vengeance upon those responsible for his agonizing past. The Crow was conceptualized as the writer’s own cathartic release to cope with his fiancée’s tragic demise. Admixed with shades of sorrow, guilt, and trauma, the violent, black-and-white world of Crow unraveled itself in the comic panels in 1989. The Crow quickly found its audience as with its pervading visual and metaphorical darkness, a broken protagonist, neo-gothic settings, and morbid theme—it had an appeal of its own that readers in the early 90s cherished with their heart. A timeless classic in its own right,...

The Crow 2024s Box Office Eyeing Franchise-Low Global Milestone
Image
After two lackluster weeks at the box office, The Crow is eyeing a franchise-low global milestone. Led by Bill Skarsgrd as the titular undead vigilante, the reimagining of James O'Barr's graphic novel of the same name has endured as rocky of a road in theaters as it did in its development, garnering primarily negative reviews from critics and opening to $4.6 million at the box office, shy of its $6-9 million projections. In the weeks since, The Crow has only grossed a worldwide total of $18.5 million, well short of its reported $50 million production budget.

Now, Collider is reporting that The Crow's box office woes are continuing, as the movie has dropped to a $59-per-theater average. Though projections for the weekend of September 6-8 have yet to be shared, the ongoing success of Deadpool & Wolverine and the newly released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice do point toward the movie being unlikely to...

The Crow 1994 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The soundtrack to Alex Proyas' gothic superhero film The Crow is essential to the dark mood of this 90s cult classic. Starring Brandon Lee in his final role as Eric Draven, the film follows the story of a rock musician brought back from the dead to avenge the murder of his fiance. Music is integral to Draven's character and also featured heavily in the comics on which The Crow movie was based.

The inclusion of songs by 80s post-punk groups the Cure and Joy Division is particularly notable. Writer James O'Barr devoted a whole page of the comic to the lyrics of "The Hanging Garden", while the chapters "Atmosphere" and "Atrocity Exhibition" took their titles from Joy Division songs. Just as the soundtrack to The Crow 2024 features original music by FKA twigs, the 1994 version included songs written specifically for the film, such as The Cures Burn. The contribution of such...

The Crow Flops During Second Weekend In Theaters...And It's Fared No Better Overseas
Image
The Crow just wrapped up its second weekend in theaters and, for the most part, it feels like the remake has already been forgotten. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised seeing as it debuted at #8 during its opening weekend and has already slipped to #11.

The movie flopped during its first frame with a $4.6 million debut and made only $1.8 million this weekend to take its current domestic total to a mere $8.5 million. Overseas, it's performed no better and sits at just $13.2 million at the worldwide box office.

With a $50 million budget, this is nothing short of a disaster for Lionsgate and The Crow will likely go down as one of 2024's biggest flops.

With 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, Rupert Sanders' remake has a slightly better 65% score from audiences; however, that's done little to help its box office prospects and we'd imagine a Digital release is now imminent.

1994's The Crow starring the late...

10 Movies Only Worth Watching for a Single Scene
Image
With most movies lasting over 90 minutes, there is generally an expectation that they entertain audiences throughout their run. There can always be low points in the narrative ostensibly to serve as a bathroom break but they are meant to be interesting and fulfilling in every single scene. That's the entire point of going to the movies in the first place.

Yet some movies are made with only a single scene that offers any payoff. Without that scene, there is no point in watching the movie at all. It could be because of poor quality, a story that hinges on a single moment, or an interesting concept, but some movies are only worth watching for one scene.

The Crow Falls Further at Box Office as Deadpool & Wolverine Remains King
Image
A week after its theatrical release, The Crow hasn't improved its stance at the box office and left the top 10. Instead, Deadpool & Wolverine continues to make waves as the second-highest-grossing film of 2024.

The Crow, based on the eponymous comic book series by James O'Barr, has been adapted several times over the years, but the highest-rated one remains Alex Proyas' version from 1994, despite its tragic story surrounding lead actor Brandon Lee's death. This year, Rupert Sanders had his own take starring Bill Skarsgrd, but the film failed to impress, as it flopped at the box office with a $4.6 million opening at the domestic box office, and just passed $10 million globally, a disappointing performance given its $50 million budget, per Box Office Mojo, adding only $1.8 million domestically in its second week. Meanwhile, the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine has just passed a major milestone, Variety reports.

Why Was The Crow (2024) Such A Bomb?
Image
Ever hear someone say “No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans?” Passion for intellectual property can manifest in many ways, but it’s often drenched in a bit of pessimism. This happens anytime a new entry is made in a franchise that is beloved and has a rabid fanbase. And with The Crow having one fantastic initial entry and a bunch of dull follow-ups, it’s even easier to understand any kind of trepidation regarding new material. Whether it’s the Brandon Lee tragedy or just the 90s grunge of it all, the magic formula has always felt like it can not be recreated. We’ve gotten the one good one, and a whole lot of mediocrity to follow. Yet why is that? This Crow fan is going to try and break it down.

This is where I’m going to get into some Spoilers for The Crow...

Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs in The Crow (2024)
Remake of 1994 Cult Film ‘The Crow’ Struggles at Box Office
Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs in The Crow (2024)
The 2024 adaptation of the 1994 film “The Crow” has faced challenges surpassing the original version in box office success and fan approval. Directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Bill Skarsgård, the remake pulled in just $4.6 million during its domestic opening weekend. This earned it a spot outside the top 10 highest-grossing films that weekend.

Many drew comparisons to the 1994 “The Crow,” starring the late Brandon Lee. That film gained cult status over the years, in part due to Lee’s tragic death during filming. With this background, some questioned if a remake was needed. Critics had difficulty separating the 2024 film from the original. It currently holds only a 6% rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

However, general audiences seemed more open to judging the new film on its own merits. It holds a 64% approval rating from verified Ticketbuyers on Rotten Tomatoes. Sanders and Skarsgård aimed to adapt James O’Barr’s comic books rather than recreate the 1994 movie exactly.

Quick Links Who Was the Spirit Guide From The Crow (1994)? Who Is the New Spirit Guide in Rupert Sanders' Crow? The Crow's Kronos Changes Eric's Story The Crow's Kronos Creates Purpose and Finality

The following contains spoilers for The Crow (2024), now playing in theaters.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for Rupert Sanders' The Crow to stack up against the original. The latter has a passionate fanbase, which led to scorn being poured on the previous sequels and TV show. No matter what, the majority want either a completely faithful adaptation of the comic by James O'Barr, or for the property to be left alone.

Despite those challenges, Lionsgate rolled the dice on a re-imagining of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgrd as Eric. Unfortunately, the critics and box office aren't endorsing it. Despite the reception, however, the new movie has revived one original element from the comic...

The Crow Is Streaming for Free in September After Reboot Dies in Theaters
Image
The humiliation suffered by 2024s reimagining of The Crow could be complete if fans of the original movie flock to revisit the 1994 Brandon Lee original when it begins streaming for free on Pluto TV in September. The controversies surrounding this years version of the Gothic tale of love and vengeance made it almost impossible for Rupert Sanders retelling to gain any traction in theaters, leading to that film becoming one of the biggest bombs of the year.

1994s release of The Crow came under a cloud following the tragic death of star Brandon Lee, who was famously shot and killed while filming a scene for the movie. The actors death immortalized the film in its own bubble, making it impossible for anything that followed to live up to the mythical status of that adaptation. Despite that, several sequels to the film were made, all receiving terrible reviews and mostly vanishing without a trace.

Quick Links The Crow (2024) Doesn't Give Its Eric Draven Any Personality The Crow (2024) Wastes the Concept of the Crows The Crow (2024) Lacks Nuance With Eric and Shelly

The following contains spoilers for The Crow (2024), now playing in theaters.

From the moment Lionsgate announced a re-imagining of The Crow, many were skeptical. Of course, no one should have passed judgment without seeing any proof of concept. It's worth remembering fans in the mid-2000s disliked a picture of Heath Ledger's Joker before trailers came out. In 2008, The Dark Knight became recognized as one of the best Batman films ever made, with Heath Ledger's Joker eclipsing Jack Nicholson's iconic portrayal.

Patience is a virtue, especially in the creative realm. Unfortunately, Rupert Sanders' The Crow isn't the masterpiece he wanted it to be. This has been largely due to the fact he re-imagined an already beloved movie that's also defined by...

The Crow 2024's 10 Biggest Missing Characters
Image
2024's The Crow is missing some key characters from the comics and past movie adaptations. The 2024 movie starring Bill Skarsgrd as Eric Draven takes plenty of liberties when it comes to adapting James O'Barr's work. The various ways that The Crow 2024 changes the comics was partially an intentional decision to help set the film apart from the original 1994 movie starring Brandon Lee. For anyone familiar with the comics or previous adaptations, taking one look at The Crow's cast and characters reveals just how different the movie really is.

While Bill Skarsgrd's Eric Draven is pulled from the comics, FKA twigs' Shelly is the only other central character in the movie who is not an original creation. This includes Danny Huston's Vincent Roeg, the film's main villain with no comic connection, and Sami Bouajila's Kronos, a reinvented version of Eric's usual spirit guide. There were indeed opportunities...

The Crow Is Set to Stream for Free After Reboot Flops in Theaters
Image
The Crow is a story that's now been reimagined multiple times, but for some fans, there will never be any topping the 1994 adaptation. For those who prefer to watch the first movie over the lateast reimagining, fans will soon have a chance to revisit the classic film for free three decades later.

Featuring the late Brandon Lee in the lead role, The Crow will start streaming for free on Pluto TV in September. The film's arrival on free streaming comes amid the new reboot starring Bill Skarsgard greatly struggling in theaters. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the reboot bombed at the box office, earning less than $11 million worldwide in its debut weekend; the film was budgeted at $50 million, not including marketing costs. Making matters worse for the reboot was its critical reception, as it was pummeled with bad reviews, resulting in a current score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Crow Press Tour: FKA Twigs Brings Out Her Futuristic, Sci-Fi-Ready Platform Heels Collection

If I’m being honest, my style doesn’t resonate with FKA Twigs’. But that doesn’t mean I hate the way she dresses. Actually, I adore her frequently avant-garde, boundary-pushing aesthetic; I just lack the guts to pull them off.

At the press tour for her new gothic superhero movie, The Crow, FKA Twigs brought her unconventional futuristic flair, mixing it with post-apocalyptic elements—not to mention gravity-defying shoes! I must say, they match the movie’s dark, supernatural tone.

The Crow: 9 Differences Between The Comics & The Movie
Image
With the 2024 reboot starring Bill Skarsgard arriving to mixed reviews, interest in the cult favorite The Crow has been steadily rising. While there are many fans of the original starring the late Brandon Lee, it's not as widely known that the 1994 movie is actually based on the 1989 comic book series The Crow. With a killer soundtrack and the spot-on casting of Lee in the titular role, the film enjoys a steady fan base that has only grown since its release in the early nineties.

Like all movie adaptations of comic books and graphic novels, there are a number of differences between the on-page and on-screen version of The Crow. The Crow comics were created by James O'Barr, and was a veritable hit, being translated into almost a dozen languages so far. The dark and macabre tone of the source material that readers know and love stays intact for the film version,...

‘The Crow’ Og Director Revels In Remake’s “Brutal” Reviews: “Cynical Cash-Grab”
Image
As Rupert Sanders‘ The Crow update suffers the fate that befalls so many remakes, at least one person isn’t so surprised.

Alex Proyas, who directed the original 1994 movie based on the James O’Barr graphic novel, seems to be reveling in the $50 million Lionsgate remake’s negative reviews after it bombed at the box office with a $4.6 million opening last weekend.

Directed by Sanders, it follows Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) as they fall in love in a rehabilitation facility and run away together. But when demons from her past catch up with them and murder the lovers, Eric comes back to life in order to exact his revenge.

Proyas took to Facebook ahead of the movie’s Aug. 23 premiere, posting a monocle emoji with a screenshot of a review about the “unfathomably awful goth remake.”

2024's Most Embarrassing Flop Continues a Problematic 128-Year-Old Movie Trend
Image
Remakes like The Crow (2024) struggle to match the success and impact of beloved originals. The cultural significance of classic original films makes their remakes a tough sell. Movie remakes should focus on fixing flaws in the original, not just recreating for profit.

More widely scorned than highly anticipated, the 2024 version of The Crow has now been released to a fate worse than death: apathy. Audiences and critics alike are in agreement concerning the new movie's poor quality, and it's similarly set to become a massive box office bomb. It's only one such failure from Lionsgate in 2024, and it also illustrates a key problem concerning movie remakes.

The idea of remaking a movie is hardly new. The earliest example is the 1896 French film Playing Cards from director Georges Mlis, which was a remake of The Messers. Lumire at Cards released that same year. Nevertheless, a beloved film receiving a remake rarely goes over well with audiences,...

Every The Crow Movie and TV Show, Ranked
Image
As The Crow returns to theaters and the series is reborn after nearly two decades, audiences may wonder how the new installment compares to the previous films. Starting as a cult classic, it's remarkable to see how far The Crow series has come and the enduring legacy of its many adaptations. With each film or TV series offering a unique perspective on the classic revenge story, this guide aims to chronicle these various adaptations and perhaps even resurrect a few from the depths of obscurity.

Originally published by Caliber Comics in 1988, The Crow was the creation of James O'Barr. The comic quickly found its place as a cult classic, leading to a successful movie adaptation in 1994. The film became wildly popular, solidifying The Crow as a cultural touchstone for comic book movies. Since then, The Crow has evolved into a full-fledged phenomenon, with countless comics continuing O'Barr's work, multiple adaptations across different media,...

The Crow director Alex Proyas relentlessly slams the reboot’s failure
Image
Alex Proyas, of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here), was never happy with the idea that Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders was going to be telling a new version of the story of The Crow with his recently released reboot – and Proyas never kept his feelings about the project to himself, taking every opportunity to mock and bash it on social media. The Crow reboot made its way out into the world last weekend and is proving to be both a critical failure and a box office bomb, which is just giving Proyas more opportunities to have fun at the movie’s expense on social media.

In the build-up to the reboot’s release, Proyas shared a screen shot of The Guardian’s review, which called the film “unfathomably awful.” Later, he commented, “Wow. The reviews are brutal.” And when the box office numbers came in,...

The Crow Director Shares Sequel Plans That Will Likely Never Happen

Director Rupert Sanders already has plans for a sequel to this years comic book movie reimagining, The Crow. But are we likely to ever see them? Speaking with Variety recently, the filmmaker revealed that he does have some big ideas for what The Crow 2 and beyond could look like, with Sanders hoping to one day use some of the cool ideas that went unused in the first outing.

Its a hard one because it was such a love story between two people.
