The Big Squeeze: Why Everyone in Hollywood Feels Stuck
Image
If you’re planning on attending Tom Rothman’s party in November, you’ll need a costume. Rumor has it the Sony chairman is asking invitees to the event — which is a joint birthday bash with his wife, actress Jessica Harper — to dress up as characters from movies made under his reign. Luckily, it’s a long list of wardrobe choices, stretching back a multitude of decades. You could go as Jack Dawson from 1997’s Titanic. Or Satine from 2001’s Moulin Rouge! Or Miranda Priestly from 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada. Or Rick Dalton from 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The point here is, Rothman is turning 70 and has been in charge at Sony (and before that, Fox) for a very, very long time.

As it happens, he’s not the only silver mogul in Hollywood these days. Bob Iger is 73 and has been running Disney off and on for nearly 20 years.

NBC Launching Jimmy Fallon-Themed Haunted Maze in Rockefeller Center
Image
NBC is turning New York’s Rockefeller Center into a haunted house, with a little help from Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and the team behind Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.

The company is launching “Jimmy Fallon’s Tonightmares” next month, a haunted maze experience based on the nightmares of the late night TV host, with “10 terrifying rooms” of frights.

The company says that it will bring “the nightmares to life in a fully immersive haunt with terrifying sets, practical effects and scares behind every corner,” and was designed with the team behind the Halloween Horror Nights experiences that have become a popular annual tradition at the Universal Studios theme parks. NBCUniversal’s Global Franchise Management group also collaborated with Fallon on the real-life experience.

Tickets start at $36.90, and go on sale Aug. 22. The experience at NBC’s global headquarters is scheduled to run through Oct. 31.

“Tonightmares has got everything...

Jurassic World Star Joins Ben Affleck & Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2
Image
The Accountant was an incredibly successful 2016 action thriller starring Ben Affleck, even prompting a sequel announcement the next year, but it was stuck in development purgatory for a long time. Now, however, the much-anticipated follow-up is in the works and actress Daniella Pineda is the latest star to join the cast.

Per Deadline, the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom actress, who played Zia Rodriguez, a member of the Dinosaur Protection Group, has signed on to appear in The Accountant 2. She has recently appeared in the Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation as Faye Valentine, a dishonest and bold criminal who joins the Bebop crew. She also reprised her Jurassic World role in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. Pineda has also done plenty of television work including The CW’s The Originals and Tales of the Walking Dead.

Does CAA Have a Succession Problem?
Image
For those of a certain age who like to think that they’re still young — and who doesn’t? — it is sobering to realize that when Michael Ovitz bowed out of the agency business in 1995, neither Tom Holland nor Zendaya had even been born.

People who weren’t around in those days can’t begin to appreciate the fear that Ovitz inspired in Hollywood. He wielded the kind of power that no agent has mustered since and no agent ever will again. How the times and the town have changed.

One thing has remained constant in all the years since Ovitz left the building: Three then-young men who had emerged as future leaders of CAA well before Ovitz departed are still at the helm. Perhaps in spite of himself, Ovitz nailed the succession question that has led to so much drama at Disney and Paramount. But those three men — now...

David Levy In Talks To Join New Private Equity Firm Arctos Sports Partners
Image
Former Turner president David Levy is close to signing on as senior advisor to newly formed Arctos Sports Partners, Deadline has confirmed.

Negotiations are nearly wrapped up with the private equity firm that launched in April to focus on acquiring minority stakes in professional sports franchises and provide franchise owners with growth capital and liquidity solutions.

Levy left Turner in March of 2019 after three decades at the broadcaster and six years as president following AT&T’s acquisition of parent Time Warner. He was key in securing NBA rights for Turner Sports and partnering with CBS and the Ncaa on rights to Men’s College Basketball Championships.

Arctos is looking to create a diversified portfolio of passive sports franchise interests in what it calls “a highly inefficient $300 billion market.” Minority sports ownership positions can be hard to buy and tough to sell. The firm and the fund it’s raising – the...
