Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Sets Max Streaming Release Date
Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon” is finally coming to streaming. The filmmaker’s passion project “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” will stream on Max starting on Friday, Aug. 23.

The film, which is the opening salvo of a planned four-film franchise, explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. The story spans the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865.

Costner co-wrote, directed, stars in and partially financed the film, which opened in theaters in June. “Horizon 2” is already completed and was originally set to be released in August, but after the lackluster performance of the first film at the box office, the decision was made to push the release of “Horizon 2” so more people could catch up with the first film. The sequel will now open later in 2024, but is...

Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Gets Max Streaming Date
Image
Kevin Costner‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.

The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.

Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.

Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’ Sets Max Premiere Date
Image
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the first installment of an ambitious Civil War epic from Kevin Costner, has been set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23.

The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

In the tradition of Warner Bros’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how...

The Sparrow review – grief and guilt haunt teenager in dark West Cork tale
Ollie West
Ollie West is superb as a sensitive misfit who inadvertently causes a terrible tragedy in this atmospheric family drama

Beautiful West Cork is photographed like a crime scene, chilly and sinister, in this atmospheric family drama about grief and guilt, and the life-changing burden of causing a terrible tragedy. In his first acting role Ollie West is superb as Kevin, a sensitive, moody teenager with chipped black nail varnish. Kevin is constantly in trouble; he’s nothing like his army veteran dad (David O’Hara), or popular big brother Robbie (Éanna Hardwicke), whose easy smile wins him the girl they both like. Kevin feels like an outsider in his family; partly the problem is that he reminds everyone of his mum, an artist who died in circumstances that make her unmentionable in their house.

The family is already bewildered by grief. Then, at around the 30-minute mark, something happens: Kevin inadvertently...

Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 trailer takes you on a journey that built America
Image
Kevin Costner‘s two-part western epic passion project is just over the horizon. The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.

In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns,...

Kevin Costner on physical media: “DVD is not dead”
Image
We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.

“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga blazes a trail at CinemaCon with an extended look at the Western epic
Image
Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.

During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Speaking about making the movie, Costner said he likes “Journey” movies. He...

Kevin Costner Hopes ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Can Be Binged in Theaters Someday
Image
Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.

“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.

So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.

“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – new trailer, still no UK distributor
Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It... (2005)
Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.

Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.

In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.

As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Kevin Costner Drops Trailer for Horizon Western — Was It Worth Leaving Yellowstone For?
Image
Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Per the industry-insider newsletter Puck, Costner’s reps later expressed his desire to return for Season 5B and possibly more.

Kevin Costner drops trailer for his Western epic ‘Horizon’ [Watch]
Image
Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.

The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.

Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer tells an epic tale of survival, settlement, and freedom
Image
Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Michael Kinirons Explores Tragic Guilt in Drama ‘The Sparrow,’ Cues Up Psychological Thriller ‘The Cellist’
Image
In his debut feature film, “The Sparrow,” writer-director Michael Kinirons explores the psychological struggle of a teenage boy dealing with unbearable guilt and the exacerbation of his quandary caused by his dysfunctional family situation.

“The Sparrow,” which screens out of competition at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, centers on Kevin (Ollie West), a melancholic boy still grieving for his late mother and finding little consolation from his tough, emotionally distant father (David O’Hara) or from his older brother (Eanna Hardwicke).

Produced by Tiger Darling, the production shingle Kinirons runs with wife, producer Alicia Ní Ghráinne, the film is set in and around the picturesque West Cork fishing village of Baltimore, located near the southern tip of Ireland.

For Kinirons, whose writing credits include Kim Farrant’s 2015 Australian outback drama “Strangerland,” starring Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving, the unique and beautiful landscape partly inspired his idea for a very human...

Gotham (2014)
'Gotham' Gets 'Homeland' Actor Chris Chalk as Lucius Fox
Gotham (2014)
Fox's Gotham is bringing in yet another DC Comics character towards the end of Season 1, with actor Chris Chalk signing on to play Wayne Enterprises tech genius Lucius Fox. The character will debut in the second-to-last episode this season, Episode 21, who "becomes a moral beacon" for Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). Like Bruce, Lucius wants to uphold Thomas Wayne's legacy, and in the comic books, Lucius eventually becomes the Wayne Enterpries CEO, after Bruce becomes Batman.

Morgan Freeman played Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. Throughout the first season of Gotham, it's been made quite clear that the Wayne Enterprises board members don't quite see eye-to-eye with young Bruce's philosophies. In last month's episode "Red Hood", Bruce and Alfred (Sean Pertwee) were paid a surprise visit by Alfred's old military buddy Reggie (David O'Hara), who we learned was actually acting as a spy for the Wayne Enterprises board members,...

'Luther' Season 3: Idris Elba says, 'He's looking for peace'
In some ways, British detective John Luther (Idris Elba) of BBC America's drama "Luther" is a classic noir hero -- he wears a long coat; he is burdened with pain and grief; he consorts with unsavory people; he never looks well-rested; and he walks on the edge of the law (often at night and/or in the rain).

But Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe never lived in a fictional universe quite as dark and gruesome and horrific as Luther's. And if it's hard on Luther, it's even harder on his fans.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, Season 3 of "Luther" arrives on BBC America for a four-night run. It's already aired on the BBC in the U.K., and it made an impact.

Stuart Heritage, who reviews the show for the newspaper The Guardian, wrote of the first installment, "... you're sick with terror. You've covered your eyes. You're regretting your decision...

The Tuesday Playlist: Luther's Back, Along With Jon Stewart and Brian Williams
Some like it rough — and TV doesn't get much rougher or darker than BBC America's brutally compelling crime drama Luther, mining new depths of depravity and tragedy in its third cycle (airing as a four-night miniseries this Tuesday through Friday at 10/9c, except Wednesday, when it airs an hour earlier as the lead-in to the even more shattering Broadchurch). Once again, Luther's Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning star Idris Elba attacks his signature role of the tormented, damaged London detective John Luther with raw magnetism. He has a way of absorbing others' pain and isn't afraid to inflict some of his own, but Luther's history of explosively reckless behavior has made him the target of a relentless Internal Affairs cop (the excellent David O'Hara), who tries to turn Luther's loyal partner Ripley (Warren Brown) against him.

'Luther' Warren Brown: 'A film prequel would be fantastic'
Warren Brown has admitted that it would be "fantastic" to see Luther make the leap to the big screen.

Brown's character Justin Ripley was killed off in a shock twist in the BBC drama's third and possibly final series, but a movie prequel has previously been mooted.

"There's been talk of a film since the first series, so potentially it could go to the big screen, which I think would be fantastic," Brown told Digital Spy.

"It's always had a very cinematic feel. I could very easily see it transferring onto film. If there's a market or an audience for it, then fantastic."

The 35-year-old actor added that he would be happy for Luther to wrap on television, rather than see the show "outlast its welcome".

"Some shows get flogged and flogged and run out of ideas," Brown suggested. "It's been fantastic to be part of a great piece of television.

'Luther's jaw-dropping finale last night: Have your say
The sound of a gunshot. Actor Warren Brown flying through the air. Five million TV viewers left in a state of despair, horror and sniffling with tears like big babies.

Last night's episode of Luther was an incredible hour of television, topped off by the biggest twist in the show's history. The lovable, huggable and general good egg DS Justin Ripley (Brown) ended up getting his chest rearranged by a sinister vigilante

Twitter inevitably responded with an outpouring of tears and shock at Ripley's demise. The rekindling of his bromance with Luther ("This is my mate Justin... and I love him") earlier in the episode, merely rubbed salt into the wounds.

Where Luther's plot will spin next week remains to be seen. David O'Hara's sulky Scotsman Dsu George Stark will no doubt use the latest heartbreaking twist in events to finish off Luther.

Will Luther be able to...
