Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Denée Benton, and more ‘The Gilded Age’ instant Emmy predictions as Season 3 ends
Image
A near death. Two shocking engagements. Sisters finally reconciling. The Gilded Age Season 3 is officially behind us, which means it's the perfect time to dive into its future Emmy chances.

Remember, the Television Academy's eligibility period runs from June 1 of one year to May 31 of the next, which means the third season of HBO's buzzy, soapy costume drama will contend at the 2026 Emmys. The eight-episode installment wrapped on Sunday to great fanfare, and a fourth season has already been ordered.

In the Season 3 finale, George Russell (Morgan Spector) survives a gunshot wound thanks to the quick work of Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), who happened to be next door visiting his love interest, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Despite the violence temporarily bringing George and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) together, he ultimately decides to separate from his wife because of the way she always puts her own interests ahead of his — i.

‘The Gilded Age’s Carrie Coon Eyes “Nascent Feminist Awakening” In Season 4
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 3 finale.

The Gilded Age’s dynamic Russell duo may be facing troubled waters next season, the pickup for which came at the end of July.

Following Bertha Russell’s (Carrie Coon) smashing success hosting the Newport Ball that was passed onto her by Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), the ambitious socialite wife of Morgan Spector’s railroad magnate George Russell sees the united façade of her family crumble once more.

Throughout Season 3, Bertha and George have been at odds, mainly due to their daughter Gladys’ (Taissa Farmiga) arranged marriage to The Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb), which Bertha pushed for despite George’s reluctance that it broke his promise to Gladys that she would marry for love. George, who leaves the morning after the ball, hints that this may have driven an irreversible wedge between him and his wife.

‘The Gilded Age’ Scores A Fourth Consecutive Series High Audience With Season 3’s Penultimate Episode
Image
The Gilded Age just keeps reaching new heights as it heads toward its Season 3 finale.

The penultimate episode drew 4.6M viewers in the three days since it debuted on HBO on Sunday, setting another series record, per Warner Bros. Discovery. This is now the fourth consecutive week that the third season has managed a new series high audience.

Ahead of Sunday’s finale, the show is apparently drawing in new viewers at a record pace. The company says that The Gilded Age is currently adding viewers at a rate nearly 50% higher than in previous seasons.

Of course, newcomers are playing catch up, so much of this viewership is actually boosting the previous seasons, too. Wbd says that Season 1 viewership was up approximately 30% last week compared to the same week leading into last season’s Episode 7.

This bodes incredibly well for the show’s fourth season, as it has already received a renewal from HBO.

‘The Gilded Age’ Renewed For Season 4 By HBO
Image
HBO has handed a Season 4 renewal to Julian Fellowes’ period drama The Gilded Age. The pickup comes ahead of the Season 3 finale on August 10, which will wrap some storylines while setting up more drama and intrigue.

The Gilded Age, which leans into the New York theater community for its strong — and expansive — ensemble cast, has been a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. Launching on HBO’s lower-profile Monday night, it defied the odds and drew a solid viewership to earn a Season 2 renewal. Moving to HBO’s marquee Sunday night, The Gilded Age has been on an upswing since, finding a new gear with its current third season.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age...

Image
All that’s gilded is gold, it turns out. HBO’s period drama “The Gilded Age” has hit another viewership high.

Per HBO, the fifth episode of the show’s third season reached 4 million viewers in Live+3 viewing. That beats the previous series high set just last week with episode four’s 3.8 million viewers. The show is outperforming its previous season by 20% thus far and reached its highest-ever weekly viewership on HBO Max, based on weekly viewing accounts

“The Gilded Age” had found love with critics since its debut, but did not start off strong in the ratings. It has slowly built its audience over its three seasons via word of mouth, with this season being the most popular yet by far.

There's High Society Drama Brewing in New 'The Gilded Age' Season 3, Episode 3 Promo
Image
The burning fire of high society is blazing at large in the Russell household, with more indulgent chaos on its way. Season 3 of The Gilded Ageis further cementing the show as one of HBO's best, with it topping the streamer's charts in a selection of countries around the world and finishing just behind the Sex and the Cityspin-off And Just Like That… and Rick and Morty in the official Max global rankings.

This success comes following the third season's second episode, titled "What the Papers Say," which saw Gladys's (Taissa Farmiga) attempt to prove to her mother she is wrong about her opinion on who she should marry go awry, despite the grandiosity of her fleeing to meet with Billy (Matt Walker) seeming at least romantic. However, the romance behind the gesture is doomed to fail, with the pair heartbreakingly calling a day on their relationship come the episode's end.

After a 2-Year Hiatus, HBO's Perfect Period Drama With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes Tops the Streaming Charts
Image
The Gilded Agehas topped the streaming charts all over again.

Per Flix Patrol, The Gilded Age has once again reached the top of the streaming chart for HBO. The series has blown past competition such as the hit comedy drama And Just Like That..., fan-favorite late-night satirical news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the recently released J. J. Abrams crime thriller, Duster.

Created by Julian Fellowes, who co-writes the series alongside Sonja Warfield, The Gilded Age is set during the eponymous era of late 1900s luxury in New York City. The Gilded Age largely follows Louisa Jacobson's Marian Brook, a poor young woman who is forced to live with her estranged aunts and subsequently thrust into the world of "new money" extravagance and "old money" conflicts. The series features a star-studded ensemble cast including Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Harry Richardson, Simon Jones, Cynthia Nixon, Donna Murphy,...

Newport Mansions, Power Shifts Headline The Gilded Age’s Third Season
Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age (2022)
With its ballroom doors swinging open again, HBO’s The Gilded Age returns for a third season on 22 June, carrying the story from Manhattan to Newport, Rhode Island, where filming inside landmarks such as Marble House and Rosecliff gives the resort its biggest screen role yet.

Season two’s moderate but steady audience—0.05 in adults 18-49 and 643,000 same-day viewers—convinced HBO to green-light a new run the morning after last year’s finale.

Creator Julian Fellowes and co-showrunner Sonja Warfield now explore what happens after society’s gates swing shut behind the ambitious, focusing on marriages, money and a divorce that could spell social ruin in a world where no-fault separation is still decades away.

Power shifts inside the Van Rhijn townhouse when newly wealthy Ada Brook seizes the household reins, a turn star Christine Baranski calls “a spectacular psychological shift” for her once-dominant sister Agnes.

Cynthia Nixon describes Ada as “a woman-child…...

‘Gilded Age’ Boss Sonja Warfield Shares Why Peggy Deserves a “Soft-Life Era,” Talks Agnes-Ada Clash

[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of The Gilded Age season three.]

Stakes got a lot higher in The Gilded Age’s second episode of season three titled “What the Papers Say,” especially with Gladys (Taissa Farmiga). Bertha’s (Carrie Coon) intentions regarding matters of her daughter’s heart were far more covert in the first episode. Now there’s no question that Bertha intends for her daughter to become the Duchess of Buckingham. Never mind the fact that Gladys and Hector, the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) don’t even know each other. For her part, Gladys is confident her dad George (Morgan Spector) will straighten it all out when he returns home. Regardless of the outcome, the tension between George and Bertha is very palpable and that kind of tension doesn’t just disappear.

As Gladys heads toward marriage, preferably one of love, Aurora (Kelli O’Hara) continues to feel the fallout from her husband’s change of heart,...

Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for the second episode of Season 3 of The Gilded Age.

The second episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, titled “What the Papers Say,” dives deeper into the somewhat controversial concept of arranged marriage after introducing divorce in the first episode.

Those who tuned in for the Season 3 premiere last weekend will remember that Taissa Farmiga’s Gladys Russell ran away from home in the middle of the night as a rebellious response to her mother Bertha’s rumored arranging for The Duke of Buckingham to come back to their mansion. It turns out she ran away to the home of her latest suitor Billy Carlton (Matt Walker) and his mother Joan (Victoria Clark).

“For every generation, marriage is a crapshoot. Nowadays, we see much more of each other than they did in the 19th century. We live together more, and we sleep together, and...

Tony Talk: Will Jean Smart’s heartbreaking performance in ‘Call Me Izzy’ be remembered at the 2026 awards?
Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. The 2025-26 Broadway season is now officially in swing, so we reconvene to discuss its first production.

Sam Eckmann: Jean Smart is dominating Emmy conversations once again thanks to her dynamic role in Hacks, but theater fans are currently enjoying her grand return to the stage. The veteran actress kicked off the 2025-26 Broadway season with the one-woman play Call Me Izzy, from playwright Jamie Wax. Smart portrays the titular character, a would-be poet living in a trailer park and trapped in an abusive marriage. Each night, Izzy sneaks away to her trailer's cramped bathroom to write lines of verse on toilet paper so that her violent husband won't discover her true passions. This role marks Smart's first Broadway show in 25 years, having last been seen on the rialto in...

Image
The Gilded Age's creator and executive producer explain the massive twist involving Aurora (Kelli O'Hara) and Charles Fane (Ward Horton) in season 3's premiere. Charles shocked Aurora by announcing he's having an affair, and he wants a divorce. ‘The Gilded Age’ Bosses Say HBO Show’s ‘Getting to the Juicy Part’ With Season 3
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Gilded Age” Season 3, Episode 1.

“The Gilded Age” returned for its third season in the midst of big changes, with a few big twists that are sure to leave New York society talking.

The Season 3 premiere, titled “Who Is in Charge Here?,” followed as the Russell and Van Rhijn households endured the last snowfall of the season before spring as both families grappled with shifting dynamics. Though preparations for the season ahead, and a contested meeting about the temperance movement orbited the episode’s happenings, it was the relationships between the HBO drama series’ beloved ensemble that took center stage.

“We’ve shown the balls and the operas and the blah, blah, blah, but now this is the men and women dealing with how they feel about each other,” series creator Julian Fellowes told TheWrap. “We are, in a way, using this season to...

‘The Gilded Age’ Finds Its Balance in the Best Season Yet: TV Review
Image
“The Gilded Age” has always been influenced by the work of Edith Wharton. Both the novelist’s oeuvre and the HBO drama are set among the upper echelons of New York society in the late 19th century, documenting frictions both large (the rise of a new industrial elite) and small (imperceptible breaches of etiquette).

But in its first two seasons, “The Gilded Age” heaped all its stakes onto a handful of storylines, most of them anchored by the series’ few characters of color. Creator Julian Fellowes otherwise eschewed the grand, tragic sweep of Wharton’s best-known work: the downfall of Lily Bart in “House of Mirth,” or the thwarted love of Newland Archer and Countess Olenska in “The Age of Innocence.” Instead, the show’s minimal upheaval tends to amount to a slightly rearranged status quo. In Season 2, the blue-blooded Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) lost her fortune and fell...

Why ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 won’t be eligible for any Emmys this year
Image
After an 18-month break, get ready to give a warm welcome back to Bertha, Marian, Agnes, Ada, and the rest of The Gilded Age gang. Season 3 will premiere the first of eight episodes in June, HBO announced today, six months after Season 2 wrapped on Dec. 17, 2023. Although a specific launch day wasn't announced, a June premiere date for the new season means it won't be eligible for the current 2025 Emmys cycle, whose cutoff is May 31. Instead, Gilded Age Season 3 will compete at the 2026 Emmy Awards.

Returning cast members for the 1880s period piece that pits "new money" New Yorkers against the established wealthy, include Carrie Coon (hot off her White Lotus Emmy buzz) as Bertha Russell, Christine Baranski as Agnes van Rhijn, Cynthia Nixon as Ada Forte, Morgan Spector as George Russell, Louisa Jacobson as Marian Brook, Denée Benton as Peggy Scott, Taissa Farmiga as Gladys Russell, Harry Richardson as Larry Russell,...

Created and directed by Robert Icke, Oedipus comes to Broadway after a West End run, also starring Strong and Manville, which has been nominated for four Olivier Awards and was the highest-growing limited run in the Wyndham Theatre’s history. ‘Hamilton’ Producers Cancel Upcoming Kennedy Center Engagement Following Trump Takeover: “Some Institutions Are Sacred And Should Be Protected From Politics”
Image
Producers of Hamilton, including the musical’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, have canceled a planned 2026 engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., decrying the “recent purge by the Trump Administration” of the venue’s professional staff and center-produced events.

“Given these recent actions, our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” said producer Jeffrey Seller in a statement. “Therefore, we have cancelled the third engagement of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center, originally scheduled for March 3-April 26, 2026.”

The engagement would have been the third run of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center.

“Hamilton was proudly performed at the Kennedy Center in 2018 during the first Trump administration,” Seller said. “We are not acting against his administration, but against the partisan policies of the Kennedy Center as a result of his recent takeover.”

The surprising move comes...
