“We definitely shoot two different shows”: ‘Modern Family’ Success Is a Miracle When Its Co-creators Refused to Be Friends After First Season
Image
Modern Family, no doubt, stands as one of the most successful sitcoms of the past decade, drawing audiences back for multiple rewatches. The key to this success lies in the unique and occasional collaboration between its co-creators, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. Their innovative partnership has been instrumental in shaping the show’s exceptional success.

Despite the show’s growing popularity, the duo’s partnership had not always been smooth. In fact, their working relationship has been described as more of a distant agreement than traditional creative collaboration. That somehow worked well for the show’s long success.

Modern Family cast | Credit: ABC Modern Family co-creators’ creative differences brought an unlikely success to the show

At the heart of Modern Family‘s success was the unique dynamic between Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. The pair’s contrasting approaches to storytelling and production led to an unorthodox working style that kept the show fresh and unpredictable.

Frasier: 10 Biggest Differences Between The Revival Show & The Original
Image
Frasier's revival captures Kelsey Grammer's brilliance, but the reboot differs in tone, humor, and setting from the classic original. The new Boston setting, revamped supporting cast, and traditional sitcom dialogue distinguish the reboot from the original series. Frasier's character has evolved to be less of a curmudgeon in the reboot, along with changes to his workplace and fame status.

Frasier came back to the small screen last year with a revival series on Paramount+, and the reboot does a lot of things differently than the classic original show. Although the reboot received mixed reviews from critics, one aspect has been praised for living up to the original: Kelsey Grammers performance in the title role. Grammer slipped back into this character so seamlessly that it was almost as if two decades hadnt passed. All these years later, Grammer effortlessly embodies Dr. Crane with razor-sharp line deliveries and a boatload of comic charisma.

The Fascinating Story Behind Cheers' Jeopardy Episode Featuring Alex Trebek
Image
When a sitcom reaches a certain level of longevity, it can be easy for writers to take their audience for granted. Storylines get lightly reworked, if not recycled wholesale. Cheap ratings are scored by having a significant character get married (call it the "Rhoda boost"). And there's no better way to guarantee the maximum amount of eyeballs than to have a major celebrity play themselves within the world of our favorite characters.

This typically works. Who can forget the time Bobby Brady faked a serious illness to earn a bedside visit from Joe Namath on "The Brady Bunch," or the time that pint-sized prankster Arnold Jackson pulled the same trick to get Muhammad Ali up to the Drummond's penthouse on "Diff'rent Strokes?" These are memorable episodes to be sure, but there's nothing more to them than the cameo.

It's far more satisfying when you can drop the celeb into...

Amazon Freevee Hands Straight-To-Series Order To U.S. Remake Of British Comedy ‘Friday Night Dinner’
Image
Exclusive: Friday Night Dinner is coming to the U.S.

Amazon Freevee has handed a straight-to-series order to Dinner with the Parents, a remake of the long-running British comedy, which comes from former Late Show with David Letterman writer Jon Beckerman, The Outlaws producer Big Talk and CBS Studios.

It marks the fourth attempt to remake the show — which ran for nearly 10 years in the UK on Channel 4 — in the U.S. and the first to get past the development stage. It has scored a 10-episode order.

2022 Amazon Freevee Pilots & Series Orders

The British series, which ran for six seasons from 2011-20, is centered around the regular dinner experience of the middle class British Jewish Goodman family every Friday night.

The U.S. version of the half-hour single-camera comedy will follow much of this. It is centered around two brothers in their 20s go to their mom and dad...

Seth MacFarlane Gives Fans Update On ‘The Orville’ Season 3: “We’re Working On It Very Hard”
Image
More than a year after season two of sci-fi adventure series The Orville came to an end, leading man and executive producer Seth MacFarlane finally has an update for season three.

“All I can say is we are working on it. We’re working on it very hard, we got hit by this just like everyone else but we’re working on it,” MacFarlane revealed during an Instagram conversation with The Orville co-star Jessica Szohr.

Like most Hollywood productions, The Orville came to a halt in March as Covid-19 began spreading across the United States. The series was also in the middle of moving from its original network home Fox to Hulu for its upcoming season.

While MacFarlane remained pretty tight-lipped about season three production for The Orville, he chatted with his co-star about why he enjoys working on the show. His appreciation for the comedy stems from the varied...

CBS’ Butler/Hope/O’Shannon Comedy Pilot Reverts To Single-Camera Format, Todd Holland To Direct
Todd Holland
CBS’ untitled comedy adaptation of the Australian comedy Upper Middle Bogan will be shot as single-camera, with the project’s executive producer Todd Holland directing the pilot.

The untitled half-hour, from Modern Family alum Dan O’Shannon, the creators of the original Australian comedy, Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, CBS Studios and ABC Studios, was conceived, sold and originally written as single-camera. It was one of the few single-camera comedy scripts that CBS asked to be converted to hybrid or multi-camera after they were delivered. It was modified, and the Butler/Hope/O’Shannon project was ordered to pilot as a hybrid and without a director as executive producer Holland, who had been expected to helm, is a single-camera director.

After the pilot was picked up, I hear the writers and producers engaged in a discussion with CBS about changing the format back to single-camera as it better represents their original...

Us remake of Upper Middle Bogan gets pilot order from CBS
Upper Middle Bogan is set to be remade by CBS for American audiences.

The show's co-creator, Robyn Butler, told 774 ABC Melbourne's Jon Faine that the Us version would be "the same, but in America".

The redo is untitled, and presumably won't have the word "bogan" in the American title.

The original is available in the Us on streaming service Hulu and ABC iview in Australia. A third series will screen on the ABC later this year.

Butler and Wayne Hope, who made the feature Now Add Honey last year, will team with American writer Dan O'Shannon (Cheers, Frasier, Modern Family) on the pilot script.

We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Either way, Christmas episodes tend to demonstrate the strengths of our favourite series, and it’s long been a festive ritual of mine to wheel out old DVD sets and settle back for a few favourites during December.

'Argo' Wins at the Producers Guild Awards, Paving Way to the Oscars
I was of the opinion it would either be Lincoln or Silver Linings Playbook winning at the 2013 Producers Guild Awards, making it that much easier to pick one as the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars. Well, the producers made it even easier than that... they chose "Option C". Ben Affleck may have been snubbed a nomination for Best Director by the Academy, but ever since, Argo has won big at the Critics' Choice Awards, Golden Globes and now the PGA awards as it was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, giving it a clear path to winning Best Picture at the Oscars at the end of March. Tomorrow night the Screen Actors Guild will hold the 2013 SAG Awards and while I predicted Silver Linings Playbook would take the award when I posted my thoughts on Wednesday, at this point I would...

‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Rescue Me’ take Humanitas kudos
Image
It took a little patience and a lot of good humor to get the 2012 Humanitas Prize kudos handed out on Friday.

Technical difficulties, human error and the propensity of scribes to hog the microphone made for a three hour-plus affair at the Montage hotel in Bev Hills, where the luncheon ceremony was hosted by Bill Lawrence. When all was said and done, “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Rescue Me” and “Modern Family” claimed the top top series honors.

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” screenwriters Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin took the org’s Sundance indie film award. James Solomon and Gregory Bernstein won for feature film for “The Conspirator.”

ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (Stacy McKee) and FX’s “Rescue Me” (Denis Leary and Peter Tolan) tied for hourlong series category. ABC’s “Modern Family” (Abraham Higginbotham and Dan O’Shannon) won the half-hour heat. HBO’s “Cinema Verite” (David Seltzer) prevailed in the 90-minute telepic category.

Watch: Disney's Oscar-Nominated 'Redux Riding Hood' Pops Up After Hiding for 15 Years
In 1995 director Steve Moore was approached by the folks at Disney TV Animation to make a "Fractured Fairy Tales type of short" and they were willing to give him stylistic free rein. Redux Riding Hood secured a great script from star sitcom writer Dan O'Shannon about a wolf (voiced by Seinfeld's Michael Richards) who five years after the Little Red Riding Hood incident, laments his biggest failure in life: letting the rouge-cloaked girl get away. He becomes obsessed with the mishap, and it starts to ruin his marriage (to a sheep voiced by Mia Farrow). Eventually he builds a time machine to travel back to the fateful moment at granny's house.   The short was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997, and it's easy to see why. Lacey...

'The Descendants' and Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris' Take WGA Awards
Well you don't have to tell me twice, after Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash were awarded the USC Libraries Scripter Award on Saturday I got a feeling the Writers Guild would be going the same way, and just that has happened. Last night the WGA awarded The Descendants for Best Adapted Screenplay while also awarding Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris for Best Original Screenplay. As a result I have had to change my Oscar predictions in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as it would appear all heat was on the adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel and not on Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian's script for Moneyball. You can see those updated predictions right here. In the Original category I have had Allen's script at the top since the beginning and I see no reason to change that now. Granted, The Artist is expected to...

"Inception," "The Social Network" Win Writers Guild Awards! Check Out Complete List of Winners and Nominees!
As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."

That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy

For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Inception and The Social Network Win at the Writers Guild Awards
It's no surprise that Aaron Sorkin's script for The Social Network won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards last night -- that script is the favorite for pretty much any award it's up for.  The same is roughly true for David Seidler's script for The King's Speech in the original category.  But the very British The King's Speech does not meet WGA eligibility, leaving a vacuum at the top.  Christopher Nolan stepped up and won Best Original Screenplay for Inception, news that ought to please the masses. In television, Mad Men was named the Best Drama Series for the third year in a row, while Modern Family managed to end 30 Rock's three-year reign as Best Comedy Series.  Hit the jump to see the full list of winners. Screen Winners Original Screenplay Inception, Written by Christopher Nolan; Warner Bros. Adapted Screenplay The Social Network, Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin...

AMC's "The Walking Dead" is vying for new series prize, battling "Boardwalk Empire", "Justified", "Treme" and "Men of a Certain Age" along the way. "Empire" in particular is also nominated for drama series against older and more prominent shows like "Mad Men" and "Dexter".

The ABC series snagged awards for supporting actor Eric Stonestreet, Christopher Lloyd’s writing and Outstanding Comedy Series, while Mad Men was named Outstanding Drama Series and won for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Gold Derby nuggets: 'Modern Family' writers speak up | More 'Mad Men' | 'Black Swan' debuts at Venice
• Rick Porter chatted with some of the "Modern Family" scribes about the Emmy hopes of the freshman hit as well as the snub of a TV vet: "'Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill,' writer/co-exec producer Dan O'Shannon says. The producers of hit ABC comedy Modern Family have expressed their disappointment at actor Ed O'Neill failing to receive an Emmy nomination. While O'Neill's co-stars Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara were all nominated, the former Married...With Children star was not. But he just really holds the show down." Fellow producer Bill Wrubel agreed: "He never feels the need to be the centre of a scene. He's happy to kind of just do his line and react. 'Modern Family' writers want an ensemble-acting Emmy
The writers of "Modern Family" are exceedingly proud of the show's 14 Emmy nominations. But if they had their way, the show would have at least one more.

Co-creator Steven Levitan and five of the show's writer-producers sang the praises of star Ed O'Neill Monday night (July 19) at a Paley Center "Inside the Writers Room" event. According to them, O'Neill led the cast in deciding that they all should submit themselves as supporting actors or actresses -- but he was the only one of the adult cast members not to score a nomination.

"Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill," writer/co-exec producer Dan O'Shannon says. "... He's just so great. I think some of the stuff that's really great about him is sometimes maybe overlooked in the bigger comedy of the other characters. But he just really holds the show down.
