Chewing Gum creator Michaela Coel is to give the prestigious MacTaggart lecture at this year’s Edinburgh International Television Festival – becoming only the fifth women its 42-year history.
Coel, who has also starred in Black Mirror and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is one of the UK’s rising on-screen and off-screen stars since creating the E4 comedy Chewing Gum, which airs on Netflix in the UK. She is to appear in Netflix’s forthcoming musical feature film Been So Long.
She joins a short list of women who have given the lecture, following in the footsteps of former Doctor Who producer Verity Lambert, 60 Minutes reporter Christine Ockrent, Janet Street-Porter and Shine Group founder Elisabeth Murdoch. International news channel France 24 will link up with Dish Network and its 15 million U.S. subscribers, appropriately enough on July 14, which is Bastille Day.
The deal with the Dish platform aims to offer French-speaking audiences and Francophiles a Gallic-inflected alternative to other foreign-sourced news stations.
The channel will be available 24/7 to subscribers of the French bouquet on Channel 660.
France 24 was launched in 2006 and currently broadcasts in French, English and Arabic throughout 160 countries reaching 125 million TV households. No financial details of the deal or revenue split between the partners were made available.
Since its launch, France 24 has been available in English to select TV markets in the United States. It has strengthened its position across the country thanks to the Galaxy 23 satellite, which allows access to most cable TV providers.

De Pouzilhac named chair of TV5Monde
PARIS -- Alain de Pouzilhac has been named chairman of French-speaking channel TV5Monde, the worldwide network's board of directors said after a meeting late Tuesday.
Current CEO Francois Bonnemain stepped down from his duties, leaving France 24's de Pouzilhac to head a new organization banding together TV5Monde, RFI (Radio France International) and France 24 as part of President Nicolas Sarkozy's "exterier audiovisual" strategy.
Marie-Christine Saragosse was appointed general director and Christine Ockrent administrator of the new organization.

Sarkozy unveils new French TV group
PARIS -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy Wednesday officially launched France Monde, a new company under which state-owned radio RFI (Radio France International) and television networks TV5-Monde and France 24 will operate.
France 24's current topper Alain de Pouzilhac will head the new organization, with France 3 and France 24 journalist Christine Ockrent as general director.
De Pouzilhac will take charge of the new company, whose mission will be "to modernize and to dynamize French and French-speaking international public broadcasting," Sarkozy's government said in a statement.
The government also is counting on "a group strategy adapted to the digital age," the statement said. De Pouzilhac is expected to announce a business plan encompassing the 2009-2013 period, though no deadline for the proposal has been set.
