Richard Greenberg Dies: Tony-Winning ‘Take Me Out’ Playwright Was 67
Image
Richard Greenberg, the playwright behind Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain and Eastern Standard, has died. He was 67.

The Tony winner’s death was announced on social media, where several people in the theater world have since reacted to his passing, including Denis O’Hare, who won a Tony for originating the role of gay accountant Mason Marzac in Take Me Out when it debuted in London back in 2002.

“Hard to believe the genius that was Richard Greenberg is no more,” he captioned a photo of the two of them. “I owe him more than I could possibly say. He gave me the greatest gift ever–a beautiful character to inhabit in a beautiful play.”

O’Hare continued, “He also gave me 2 of my best friends–Lisa Peterson and Linda Emond. We all met and worked on Rich’s one act-The Author’s Voice at Remains Theatre in 1987 in a...

Bob Dylan
Smooth Talk (1985) Movie Review: Caught Between Girlhood and Danger
Bob Dylan
“Forget the dead you’ve left, they will not follow you

The vagabond who’s rapping at your door

Is standing in the clothes that you once wore

Strike another match, go start anew

And it’s all over now, Baby Blue”

“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” Bob Dylan

Joyce Carol Oates said that she was inspired to write her short story “Where Are You Going To, Where Have You Been?” (which she dedicated to Dylan) after listening to the above song. In 1985, screenwriter Tom Cole adapted it into the movie “Smooth Talk,” which was directed by his wife Joyce Chopra.

Dripping with atmosphere, rarely has a film so perfectly captured the feeling of being a teenager during a hot, sticky summer when you want to be older than you are but don’t want the consequences that come with it. “Smooth Talk” follows 15-year-old Connie (a perfectly...

I’m not the only person mourning the results of the 2024 Presidential election, in which a majority of the U.S. chose a racist, homophobic, sexual abuser and felon to retake an office he already failed at once. The general vibe on Al Gore’s internet is one of reflection: How did we not see this coming? But from what I can tell, the other overarching sentiment seems to be a bone-deep misery. So thank god for Pulitzer Prize-nominated and National Book Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates, who seems to understand our feelings,...

Wil Wheaton Rages at Larry David for Elmo Attack: “Appalling, Unforgivable, Despicable”
Image
Wil Wheaton has unloaded on Larry David for the Curb Your Enthusiasm star’s on-air Elmo attack.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation actor posted an intense 900-word essay on Facebook about the purportedly unscripted viral stunt, where David throttled the ever-cheerful and child-like Sesame Street icon live on NBC’s Today during a segment on mental health, and then told viewers “somebody had to do it.” David was prodded into apologizing for the incident, but he did so seemingly reluctantly and with a smile.

Wheaton had a strong reaction to the footage and revealed he was abused in a similar way growing up. His rant has made some reexamine last week’s incident — which was largely greeted with amusement online — while others are mocking the actor as “profanely oversensitive.”

“When I was growing up, my dad would grab me by the shoulders and shake me while he screamed in my face,...

Neuchatel Fantastic Film Festival Celebrates the Unexpected
Image
For more than two decades, the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff) has been a draw for genre filmmakers from across the globe and a pull for Swiss youth. Heading into its 22nd edition, which runs June 30 – July 8, the lakeside event will once again showcase the kind outré and audacious fare that Neuchatel’s reliable and devoted young public has come to expect, while continuing to bridge outward, welcoming more unfamiliar faces into the fold.

“By instinct, influence, and mutual attraction, genre cinema will always appeal to the young,” says Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder. “In fact, Nifff attracts one of the youngest publics of any Swiss festival, but I’d like to convert different audiences of perhaps different ages as well. And not just for commercial reasons; I find it so interesting and essential to mix things up.”

Blonde: Why Andrew Dominick Shouldn’t Go to Director Jail
Image
Andrew Dominik created one of the most controversial films in recent memory with the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, which was based on the divisive novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. While Blonde is intended to be a fictionalized version of real events, many viewers did not take kindly to the graphic depiction of sexual assault and the Nc-17 rating. While Ana de Armas’ performance was highly acclaimed and even honored with an Academy Award nomination, the film itself has been ridiculed. It recently took home the Razzie awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay at the 2023 ceremony.

It should be noted that Blonde was not completely met with negative reactions, as Colin Farrell recently praised it, and initial reviews out of the Venice International Film Festival were much kinder than those that ran once the film was available on Netflix. However, Dominik’s later comments about not...

Razzie Awards: ‘Blonde’ Named Worst Picture; Other “Winners” Include Tom Hanks, Jared Leto and the Razzies Themselves
Image
Blonde has been “honored” with two Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — which also bestowed an award upon themselves for the first time in the group’s history.

Andrew Dominik’s film, which led the Razzies with eight nominations, won worst picture of the year along with worst screenplay for Dominik. The Razzies called the film “misogynistic, salacious and fallacious” and said it “shamelessly exploits the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.”

The Razzie Awards, which honor the worst of the year, are announced annually ahead of the Oscars ceremony, which takes place Sunday. Incidentally, Blonde star Ana de Armas is up for best actress in a leading role at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Razzie organizers also chastised themselves for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong as worst actress of the year. After being “put through the cyberworld blender,” as they put it, they subsequently removed her from the ballot and announced...

Ana De Armas Reflects On Negative Response To Marilyn Monroe In Blonde
Image
Blonde star Ana de Armas reflects on the negative reception to the Andrew Dominik drama that chronicles the life and death of Marilyn Monroe. Based on the book by author Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde was released on Netflix last September, offering a fictionalized account of the late starlet's personal life and career. The film was met with mixed to negative reviews, with most critics agreeing that, while de Armas' performance is impressive, the film itself leaves much to be desired.

In a recent interview with THR, de Armas reflects on the poor reception to Blonde and its depiction of Monroe. While not necessarily dismissing criticism of the film, the actor does stress that it was never Dominik's intention to make a crowd-pleaser and that one of the key tenets of Blonde is its critique of the exploitative nature of Hollywood. Check out de Armas' full comment below:

Ana de Armas on the Polarizing Views on ‘Blonde’: “It Was Not Made to Please People”
Image
Ana de Armas’ casting in Blonde was an intriguing risk from the get-go — she even says so herself: “It was against all odds that a Cuban actress was ever going to play Marilyn Monroe.” Add to that the nature of writer-director Andrew Dominik’s script — adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel, which does not shy away from speculation or the imagined darker, violent parts of Monroe’s life — and the movie was all but guaranteed to cause a stir.

When Blonde premiered at the Venice International Film Festival over the summer, the Nc-17-rated film garnered a 14-minute standing ovation, though reception to the movie since has been decidedly more polarized. Some critics and audiences have taken issue with the film’s creative liberties with Monroe’s story, including scenes of sexual assault and graphic violence. But de Armas has been hailed as a tour de force, as evidenced...

Marilyn Monroe
Blonde - Nikola Jovic - 18185
Marilyn Monroe
“Can you see her? [...] Only in the mirror I could see myself. [...] Look, Norma Jeane. There she is. Your magic friend.“ While looking at Marilyn Monroe standing in front of the mirror, bare in the lustful embrace of Cass Chaplin (played by Ana de Armas and Xavier Samuel respectively), one might indeed reflect on Cass’s words: can we really see her? We may have the perfect recreations of iconic shots and images, but did we really get to see the person behind the lushly veiled appearances? Regardless of what your answer may be, the implications of both positive and negative answers reach two equally terrible conclusions.

In this fictionalised retelling of the story of Monroe - which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates from 2000 - after a stylish slo-mo rendering of the famous “delicious breeze” scene from The Seven...

Ana De Armas' Marilyn Monroe Accent Backlash In Blonde Is Absurd
Image
Netflix released the Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde starring Ana de Armas as the legendary actress, and there is a backlash over the actor's accent in the role. Excitement was high for the movie in part due to its Nc-17 rating, the first of its kind on Netflix. However, there was a lot of controversy surrounding Blonde, with critics saying it exploited Marilyn Monroe’s life and trauma. However, there was also controversy surrounding criticism of Ana de Armas's portrayal of the tragic Hollywood figure. Adapted from Joyce Carol Oates's novel of the same name, Andrew Dominik’s Blonde depicts a fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe’s life.

Oates’s novel is told from Marilyn Monroe’s perspective, and Dominik maintained this device and expanded it to include how the world viewed Marilyn Monroe compared to how she viewed herself as Norma Jeane. Blonde was originally to star British-Australian actress Naomi Watts,...

Blonde: How Ana De Armas' Marilyn Monroe Compares To Real Life
Image
Blonde is a fictionalized depiction of Marilyn Monroe's life as one of the mid-20th century's biggest celebrities and film stars, whose famous roles include Some Like It Hot and The Seven Year Itch. Inspired by a Joyce Carol Oates novel, the movie stars Oscar nominee Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe. Both the film and the book it is based on are steeped in controversy, with Blonde receiving the infamous Nc-17 rating for "some sexual content" - a first for not only a Netflix original movie but for any streaming service exclusive film. Netflix's Blonde tells a fictionalized account of Marilyn Monroe's life as she rises to become one of the most famous celebrities ever. What Ana De Armas' Blonde Movie Is Based On (It's Not A Biopic)
Image
The Ana De Armas Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde is a critically-acclaimed, yet controversial Netflix film. While it’s about the late Marilyn Monroe, it’s not actually a biopic at all. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, Blonde is the latest in a long line of films about the famous actress. Blonde's Nc-17 rating created a stir online, especially since it streamed on Netflix. Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortensen and rose to fame in the 1950s. Though she died in 1962, several films exist about her life. Blonde sets itself apart by showing mostly the dark moments in Marilyn's life.

Blonde is not a traditional biopic; the film is a fictionalized take on the late actress’ life based on the book by Joyce Carol Oates. The novel, originally released in 2000, chronicles Marilyn Monroe’s life from her perspective. Monroe never wrote an autobiography, so the words and thoughts...

Why Is Netflix's Blonde Movie Rated Nc-17?
Image
The new Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde has been controversial from the start, but it raises the question of why Blonde is rated Nc-17. Blonde stars Ana de Armas as Monroe, the "blonde bombshell" who became a pop culture icon and sex symbol before her untimely death in 1962. Director Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) adapted the ambitious novel of the same name by author Joyce Carol Oates, which took several liberties with the life of Monroe. Netflix's Blonde has been the subject of controversy since it was announced, with the streamer shifting release dates early on due to the graphic content of the film after it was completed in 2019.

Netflix brought in a new editor to help "curb the excesses of the movie" and prepare it for release according to Dominik, which he says actually ended up making the film better. Oates' 2000 Marilyn...

Why Blonde's Reviews Are So Divisive
Image
Blonde has a riveting central performance from Ana de Armas, but reviews of the movie as a whole have been incredibly mixed. Andrew Dominik is an esteemed filmmaker known for his crime dramas Chopper, which launched the career of Eric Bana, and the Palme d'Or contender Killing Them Softly, as well as the highly acclaimed Western The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford. However, despite a 14-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, his movie Blonde has received divisive reviews from critics.

Blonde is a fictionalized take on the life and career of Norma Jeane Mortensen, known to the world as Marilyn Monroe, rather than a traditional biopic. Based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, Andrew Dominik's Blonde is controversially rated Nc-17, due to its depiction of "some sexual content." After the release of its trailer, Blonde...

SAG Awards nominee profile: Ana de Armas (‘Blonde’) embodies Marilyn Monroe
Image
Although Marilyn Monroe never got the chance to achieve Screen Actors Guild Awards recognition, her legacy has been honored by the organization in the form of multiple Best Actress notices for women who have embodied her on the big screen. 11 years after Michelle Williams was nominated for playing Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” Ana de Armas has earned a spot in the current lead female lineup for her take on the classic movie star in “Blonde.” Since SAG voters have feted several portrayals of iconic actors before, she stands a good chance of going all the way.

De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) make up a first-time nominee majority in this year’s Best Film Actress SAG Award lineup, although Yeoh is a past ensemble contender for “Crazy Rich Asians” (2019). The other two lead female slots are filled by Cate Blanchett (“Tar...

The Director Who Discovered Angelina Jolie Relaunches Her Own Career — and Reflects on Finding the Star
Image
Many an older film discovery will inspire revelations of “She’s in this?” — but none quite like the 1996 indie “Foxfire.” A cult classic beloved by queer audiences, “Foxfire” features early performances not only from Angelina Jolie, but singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis and queer icon and model Jenny Shimizu. It is also, famously (for those who care about these kinds of things), the project that introduced Jolie and Shimizu, who had a serious relationship throughout the late ’90s.

Based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, “Foxfire” follows five high school girls who take revenge on an abusive teacher, unwittingly forming a misfit crew of renegade feminists. They are radicalized by a hitchhiking firebrand who appears out of thin air, played by a young Jolie in motorcycle boots and an androgynous messy bob. Though she had done a few films prior, “Foxfire” established the magnetic bad girl type (and forever queer thirst...

Razzie Awards 2023: Jared Leto, Tom Hanks Up for Worst Performances

Awards season is upon us, and while Hollywood is honoring 2022’s best films and performances, the Razzie Awards shine a light on the “worst” movies and actors of the year.

Leading the field is Andrew Dominik’s controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” with eight nominations. While Ana de Armas is not up for worst actress, the film is nominated for worst picture and Dominik for worst director and screenplay. Hanks is also in the worst actor race for his turn as Geppetto in Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.” Filling out the worst actor race are Colson Baker, Davidson (for a voice role in “Marmaduke”), Sylvester Stallone (“Samaritan”) and Jared Leto (“Morbius.”)

Razzie Awards Nominations: ‘Blonde’ Leads Films With 8 Nods; Tom Hanks Listed Twice For ‘Elvis’ & ‘Pinocchio’
Image
Andrew Dominik’s controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde landed eight nominations from this year’s Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture.

Announcing the film’s Razzies haul, the organization described the biopic as a film that “explores the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe…by continuing to exploit her posthumously.” Dominik also picked up Worst Screenplay and Director nominations.

Rapper Machine Gun Kelly’s stoner comedy Good Mourning trails Blonde with seven nominations. The Razzies called the flick a “laugh-free stoner comedy achieving the rare feat of scoring a perfect Zero on Rotten Tomatoes.” Kelly, who shares co-writing and screenplay credits with Mod Sun, racked up four noms, including worst actor.

Kelly will “compete” for the prize with Tom Hanks, who picked up a Worst Actor nom for his portrayal of Gepetto in Robert Zemeckis’s Pinocchio. Hanks also landed among the Worst Supporting Actor noms for Elvis. Hanks plays Elvis’s long-time...

Razzie Awards: ‘Blonde’ Leads Noms With Eight; Tom Hanks Lands Two Mentions for ‘Pinocchio,’ ‘Elvis’
Image
The Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — have bestowed Blonde with eight nominations, including worst picture, in their annual picks for the worst films and performances of the year.

In their announcement, Razzie organizers said the movie “‘explores’ the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe…by continuing to exploit her posthumously.” Blonde also landed noms for worst screenplay and worst director for Andrew Dominik, “whose work here says more about him than it does about his subject,” the Razzies said.

Also landing multiple noms are Tom Hanks and Pete Davidson, who are both up for worst actor and worst supporting actor. Hanks was cited for his portrayal of Gepetto in Disney’s Pinocchio and his “latex-laden, ludicrously accented portrayal of Col. Tom Parker in the otherwise critically acclaimed Elvis,” while Davidson was singled out for his voice role in Marmaduke and his cameo in Good Mourning.

Good Mourning, incidentally, will “complete” with...

2023 Razzie Awards nominations: ‘Blonde’ leads with 8, ‘Good Mourning’ has 7
Image
If you thought the Razzie Awards learned a lesson last year about bullying, decency and humanity when they graciously rescinded an “award” they’d given to Bruce Willis due to his failing health, you’d be dead wrong. This year’s Golden Raspberry “honorees” include a 12-year-old girl (wait — how is that okay?) in Worst Actress, Ryan Kiera Armstrong (“Firestarter”). Also recognized is movie star Tom Hanks in Worst Actor (“Disney’s Pinocchio”) and Worst Supporting Actor (“Elvis”) — he of course is a two-time Oscar winner for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994). Scroll down to see all of the 2023 Razzie Awards nominations.

The biggest film nominee this year is Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” which scored a jaw-dropping eight bids including Worst Picture and Worst Supporting Actor x2 for Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams. Luckily, Best Actress Oscar hopeful Ana de Armas was spared.

Joyce Carol Oates: ‘The Fabelmans’ Is ‘Remarkably Mediocre’ and ‘Discouraging’ to Young Filmmakers
Image
Joyce Carol Oates is calling out Steven Spielberg in an influencer feud we did not have on our 2023 bingo card.

Amid the awards season circuit where the adaptation of Oates’ fictionalized portrait of Marilyn Monroe, “Blonde,” and Spielberg’s autobiographical epic “The Fabelmans” are both making the rounds, Oates shared her film review for Spielberg’s personal feature.

“This was the most imaginative scene in ‘The Fabelmans,’ which was on the whole a remarkably mediocre movie for all its attention & the recent award,” Oates tweeted with a photo of David Lynch as director John Ford following “The Fabelmans” Golden Globes win. “Must be discouraging for young filmmakers.”

Netflix and Plan B film “Blonde” has been mostly iced out of the awards season buzz, other than in the SAG and Golden Globes categories of Best Actress for Ana de Armas’ performance as the legendary star. Oates maintained that the controversial Nc-...

Whoopi Goldberg Says Her Will Prevents Unauthorized Biopics About Her Life
Image
Whoopi Goldberg is protecting her legacy, in this life and the next. Even after death, the actress and TV personality won’t have to worry about people trying to tell her life story without permission.

Recently, Goldberg, 67, was discussing the controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde”, from director Andrew Dominik, during an episode of “The View”.

The film — based on the fictionalized biography of Monroe, penned by Joyce Carol Oates — has come under fire for its brutal portrayal of the movie icon’s life, and has been decried by many critics and detractors as misogynistic.

Amid the conversation, co-host Sunny Hostin said she believes that many people would be interested in making unauthorized posthumous biopics about Goldberg in the future.

“I was speaking to Whoopi, and I was saying that she’s such a famous person that when she passes away, people are going to make films,” Hostin shared.

“Actually they’re not,...

Blonde Director Has Callous Response To Marilyn Monroe Movie Backlash
Image
Blonde director Andrew Dominik offers a reply to the backlash garnered by the Marilyn Monroe film. Rather than being another biopic about the life of icon Marilyn Monroe (also known as Norma Jeane Mortensen), Blonde is based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, which presents a fictionalized take on Monroe's story. Before its release, Blonde was already courting controversy due to its Nc-17 rating and the accent of star Ana de Armas, which some felt didn't match Monroe's. Once it debuted on Netflix, Blonde became the subject of criticism by many, with critics taking issue with the film's long runtime, indulgent and exploitative portrait of Monroe, and hollow repetitive nature.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Dominik opened up about the backlash the film has garnered since its release, stating that it is impossible for his film to exploit Monroe "because she's dead." The director...

Before It Was A Frank Darabont Movie, Stephen King's The Mist Was A 1984 Audio Drama
Image
Stephen King's novella "The Mist" was originally published in 1980 as part of a horror compilation called "Dark Forces." The impressive compilation included stories by Ray Bradbury, Edward Gorey, Joyce Carol Oates, and Robert Bloch, along with several others. "Dark Forces" was notable in the horror community, and it was widely read by other horror authors. In the 1985 interview book "Faces of Fear," Clive Barker noted "Dark Forces" as the push he needed to start writing his own "Books of Blood."

"The Mist" was easily the standout of the compilation, and would eventually be adapted to film in 2007 by Frank Darabont. The film, like the novella, tells the story of a mysterious fog that rolls in across a small, rural community, cutting off all visibility. Hiding in the mist are unseen creatures. Enormous bugs and land octopodes appear from nowhere and attack the locals. The bulk of Darabont's film takes...

Ana de Armas (‘Blonde’) discusses ‘very challenging’ transformation into Marilyn Monroe [Exclusive]
Image
Even six decades after her untimely passing, Marilyn Monroe’s stardom has never faded. As the interest in her pop culture iconography continues to surge, so does the level of public respect for her talent. Her ubiquity puts any actress who portrays her under automatic scrutiny, as “Blonde” star Ana de Armas can certainly attest. Her embodiment of the seminal movie star in the Netflix film was an undertaking she “knew from the beginning [would] be very challenging.” Watch her and several more members of the “Blonde” cast and crew expound on her transformation in the exclusive video feature above.

Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” is adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, which is a work of biographical fiction about the actress who was born Norma Jeane Mortenson. De Armas says her “passion for this project came from understanding Norma” and that she took care to find “moments where Norma was there,...

Ana de Armas in Blonde (2022)
Blonde Review
Ana de Armas in Blonde (2022)
Blonde presents a singular vision of Norma Jeane Baker, the troubled soul who played host to Marilyn Monroe. The film makes no claim to being the definitive account of her life. Instead, in adapting Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, director Andrew Dominik tells the story of a tragic figure who died by overdose at the age of 36.

Dominik presents the threads of this death in an experimental, expressionistic nightmare. The aspect ratio is redrawn throughout, narrowing and widening. The palette alternates between full colour and stark monochrome. There are numerous handheld moments, too, as well as various effects that range from the ghoulish to the arrestingly beautiful. All of this gothic visual splendour is scored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, whose work is hauntingly ambient. Blonde is a truly aesthetic experience and perhaps the greatest example of Dominik’s dark, inventive artistry.

Again, it must be...

‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ ‘Blonde,’ and the Faux Feminism of 2022’s Most Debated Films (Opinion)
Image
[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for both “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Blonde.”]

It’s been five years since the start of #MeToo, and mainstream Hollywood still doesn’t know what a truly feminist film looks like.

The releases of the highly debated, female-directed “Don’t Worry Darling” and the would-be awards darling that reimagines Marilyn Monroe’s trauma, “Blonde,” proved an even deeper issue when debating the gender politics of films: “Feminism” has been co-opted to the point of becoming meaningless. 2022 marked the Supreme Court overturn of Roe v. Wade… and also #MeToo film marketing jumping the shark.

Olivia Wilde’s off-the-rails press tour for “Don’t Worry Darling” started with the “Booksmart” helmer praising the film for being a beacon of female pleasure (spoiler: lead star Florence Pugh’s character is repeatedly raped in retrospect and cannot consent since she is chained to a bed and held captive unconscious). In a splashy pre-release cover story, Wilde made...

‘Blonde’: Pioneering Filmmaker Joyce Chopra on the Key Differences Between Her Adaptation and Andrew Dominik’s
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The much-publicized backlash that has surrounded Andrew Dominik’s Nc-17 biopic Blonde has had the surprising, simultaneous effect of elevating interest in another Marilyn Monroe project that might otherwise have slipped into the past. In 2001, pioneering female filmmaker Joyce Chopra shot a two-part TV miniseries for CBS, adapting the very same Joyce Carol Oates novel Dominik would later spend over a decade bringing to screen for Netflix.

Dominik’s harrowing, nearly three-hour telling of the Marilyn story has been widely criticized for its almost exclusive focus on the many traumas of the Hollywood icon’s life, and for devoting little interest to the episodes where she exercised undeniable agency and self-determination. As The Hollywood Reporter’s lead critic David Rooney put it in his review, “This is a treatise on celebrity and the sex symbol that blurs not only reality with fantasy but also empathy with exploitation.

Nick Cave at an event for Lawless (2012)
Nick Cave names Netflix’s divisive Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde as his ‘favourite film of all time’
Nick Cave at an event for Lawless (2012)
Nick Cave has said Blonde is his “favourite film of all time”, disregarding the largely damning critical response surrounding the new Marilyn Monroe biopic.

The 65-year-old Australian singer worked alongside Warren Ellis to record the soundtrack for the Ana de Armas-led adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s novel of the same name.

And despite “disgusted” viewers having already branded it “unwatchable” since its release on Netflix last month, Cave has proudly proclaimed it his “favourite” film.

In the latest edition of the singer-songwriter’s newsletter The Red Hand Files – in which fans can send questions to the star – he was asked: “What is your favourite film of all time?”

“Dear Sourav, Blonde. Love, Nick,” he responded.

In her one-star review, The Independent’s Jessie Thompson wrote that director Andrew Dominik’s movie “is degrading, exploitative and misogynist, yet mercilessly boring”.

The Independent’s Amanda Whiting agreed, adding that Marilyn...

The Current Debate: On the Exploitation of “Blonde”
Image
You’d be forgiven for mistaking Andrew Dominik’s Blonde for a kind of religious ritual—“the Passion of the Marilyn,” as Leslie Felperin aptly describes it over at The Guardian. Based on Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 novel of the same name, Dominik’s take on Monroe’s life puts its subject’s suffering front and center. An elliptical chronicle of the actress’s rise to planetary stardom and tragic fall, the film captures Monroe’s life as an endless slideshow of humiliations and traumas. Played by Ana de Armas, Dominik’s Marilyn saunters into Blonde as a sort of martyr, first wrestling with a schizophrenic mother and a miserable childhood, and then with a cannibalistic industry and throngs of brutalizing men who paved the way to her death by overdose at the age of 36. Rated Nc-17 for its graphic scenes of sexualized violence—featuring rapes, forced abortions, and degrading oral sex—the film,...

Mila Kunis in Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
Eight terrible films that did well for Netflix – from Luckiest Girl Alive to Blonde
Mila Kunis in Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
Being featured on the Netflix top 10 used to mean something.

It was a useful list that audiences could look to for recommendations. These were films you could trust to be good.

Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. Now, more often than not, reaching number one on Netflix isn’t necessarily something to be proud of.

As the hate-watching phenomenon continues to grow – in which viewers will binge watch something they admit is terrible – popularity on Netflix becomes less and less synonymous with quality.

We’ve rounded up a list of eight films that did spectacularly well for the streaming giant... but bombed with audiences, according to their Rotten Tomato ratings.

Luckiest Girl Alive (43 per cent)

Currently number one on Netflix, Luckiest Girl Alive is the latest example to prove that a film doesn’t need to be good to make it to the top spot. Mila Kunis...

Link Tank: Spooky Season Events Schedule 2022
Florence Pugh
Spooky Season is here!

In honor of the scariest time of the year, we’re honored to partner with some fantastic (and frightening) events throughout the month of October! Events include the New York City premiere of Bitch Ass, Ethereal Horror Fest in Austin, Texas, and more! Check out the schedule below!

In case she hasn’t won you over already, Florence Pugh is here to continue her reign over Hollywood in her latest film The Wonder.

“Florence Pugh constantly reminds us that she’s a force to be reckoned with. After her outstanding turn as Alice in Don’t Worry Darling (truly why you should see the film), Pugh has shown us yet again just how brilliant she is. She’s constantly bringing to life women who are being challenged by the men around them, and it seems like her latest film The Wonder from Netflix is falling into that category.
