This Day That Year: When Sunny Deol Spoke In Favour Of Bobby Playing Bhagat Singh
Image
In a new installment of his This Day That Year series, Subhash K Jha looks at the time when Sunny Deol spoke about Bobby starring as Bhagat Singh in 23rd March 1931: Shaheed.

It’s easy to dismiss this as yet another Bhagat Singh bio-pic, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, in the current cascade of such films, more so when the director Guddu Dhanoa doesn’t have the reputation of making particularly classy films.

But Dhanoa’s version of the by-now familiar story has its own smouldering intensity. It projects a vitality quite dissimilar to Raj Kumar Santoshi’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh . And yet , the vitality in 23rd March 1931 Shaheed is no less vital.

An organic intensity runs through Dhanoa’s exacerbated narrative. Sometimes, specially in the second-half he gets carried away with all the bombastic outpouring of rhetorics and rhyme -–‘screams’ that patriotic films in mainstream Hindi...

This Day That Year: When Vivek Oberoi Played Pm Narendra Modi
Image
In a new edition of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha revisits the one where Vivek Oberoi played Pm Narendra Modi, which released in 2019.

In Omung Kumar’s Pm Narendra Modi, which clocks six years on May 24, Vivek Oberoi handles the principal role with a certain amount of flair and decency. His eyes speak more than a thousand words. Lamentably this is a film that believes in the power of verbal lamp-posts. Every self-glorifying thought that this celluloid holographic Modi feels must have a verbal counterpoint. Every rhetoric and retort, every aphorism that our prime minister has uttered or not uttered (the line between fact and fiction in this bio-pic is non-existent) is given the status of a large hoarding.

In one sequence, he communicates metaphysical ideas with his spiritual guru (played by Suresh Oberoi), which ends with the Guru declaring his shishya ready for politics.

For a brief interlude,...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Revisits 16 Years Of Sushmita Sen’s Karma Aur Holi
Image
Subhash K Jha, takes on Sushmita Sen’s Karma Aur Holi, which released in 2009, in this new This Day That Year feature.

A few minutes into this mish-mash of Woody Allen, George Bernard Shaw, Govind Nihalani, and Keshu Ramsay, you know the narrative is in trouble. The characters who come to Sushmita-Randeep’s home in New York for an afternoon of heavy-duty gossiping, bitching introspection, and confession seem to be speaking dialogues borrowed from a cheap American soap opera. The feelings and thoughts are not only assumed, but they are also devoid of any coherent pattern. The script tries to be sassy without the basic source material to carry off its ambitions.

What was Sushmita Sen thinking when she decided to work in this tableau of titillating possibilities on man-woman relationships all gone to utter and irrevocable waste? Karma Aur Holi with huge dollops of confession thrown in with the...

Ketan Mehta at an event for Mangal Pandey (2005)
Dirge of Resistance: Unveiling Patriarchy and Power in ‘Mirch Masala’ (1987)
Ketan Mehta at an event for Mangal Pandey (2005)
The newly appointed subedar is a despot. He laughs malevolently, asks for women at night in his tent, lashes, and loots villagers, stands haughtily astride, and casts his lustful gaze over the horizon until the women of the village organize themselves and confront him. Loosely based on a four-page-long Chunilal Madia story, Ketan Mehta’s 1987 film “Mirch Masala” chronicles the women’s struggle against patriarchy, casteism, and et al. social odds in pre-independence rural Gujarat.

A troubadour, dressed in white, along with his horse, passes through a topsy-turvy wilderness, impregnating the air with his enchanting folk dirge – that’s how “Mirch Masala” begins. The troubadour never appears again in the film; but as he passes, making his voyage toward the unknown, the camera moves on to capture the spice plantation where a miscreant breaks the head of a scarecrow, and we see Subedar (played by Naseeruddin Shah) for the first time,...

Animal is Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga‘s only third film after Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh. Ranbir Kapoor’s psycho love is captured in ‘Saari Duniya Jalaa Lenge’ from ‘Animal’
Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor-starrer latest track ‘Saari Duniya Jalaa Lenge’ the upcoming film ‘Animal’, captures a kind of murderous and psychotic love that really tells just exactly what Ranbir’s character is.

Contrary to its title though, the song’s nature is much more gentle and speaks more of a kind of love, a family love, where he will burn the whole world down if anything happens to his loved ones.

Sung by B Prakk, the new track has a very standard Bollywood style Punjabi flair where it stylistically is just very weird. Partly it almost sounds like a mourning song, and is laden with classic Punjabi pop elements.

However, later the track hits an orchestral note which makes it extremely big and grand, thus exemplifying more and more of the gangster’s madness while still surprisingly sounding gentle.

A very clever and unique choice to go about it, B Prakk...

“Rebel Without A Pause, Kabir Singh Is Arjun Reddy Reloaded” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Kabir Singh

Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Suresh Oberoi,Arjan Bajwa, Kamini Kaushal

Written & Directed by Sandeep Vanga

Remakes, more often than not, disappoint. This one doesn’t. Kabir Singh doesn’t quite better its precursor, the astonishing game-changing Telugu film Arjun Reddy. And really Shahid Kapoor is no patch on Vijay Deverakonda, who sweated, bled and urinated (literally) into his despicably misogynistic character, investing into this weird thoroughly reprehensible child-man a kind of contemporary resonance that makes for a bizarre blend of Devdas, James Dean and all the rebels without a pause that we’ve encountered before and after Bachchan’s Angry Young Man.

The question is, Kabir Singh (nee Arjun Reddy) ko gussa kyon aata hai? Not unlike Naseeruddin Shah’s Albert Pinto, Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh is a very troubled livid man, threatening, swearing, drinking, and fornicating his way through a life and support system. It...

“Pm Narendra Modi Is Not a Historical Bio-Pic – it’s a Mythological Saga” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Pm Narendra Modi

Starring Viveik Oberoi, Manoj Joshi, Suresh Oberoi

Directed by Omung Kumar

This is not the Narendra Modi bio-pic that we’ve all been waiting for. The one that shows this powerful well-meaning sincere statesman taking hard decisions and taking on opponents like a lion in a jungle of craven wolves.

No. This is not even a bio-pic. It is mythological saga, a passionate puranic paean to the powerful prime minister who took his tea-selling childhood to a glorious Himalayan summit beyond ‘Chai-na’. Seen in that dazzling hagiographic light this film is not so offensive.

Viveik Oberoi handles the principal role with a certain amount of flair and decency. His eyes speak more than a thousand words. Lamentably this is a film that believes in the power of verbal lamp-posts. Every self-glorifying thought that this celluloid holographic Modi feels must have a verbal counterpoint. Every rhetoric and retort...

Mann ki baat that immediately flashed when the end credits roll

Mitron, Bhaiyon or Behano, In reality, this ?unofficial? biopic is the more essential and necessary for an actor like Vivek Oberoi and not the charismatic Indian leader. In fact, if I say Vivek Oberoi has tried to cash on the popularity of Modi and the election fever (considering his initial release date) then it won?t be wrong in my opinion.
