‘Animal Among Us’ Review
Stars: Larisa Oleynik, Erin Daniels, Heather Tom, Christine Donlon, Christian Oliver, Jasmine Dustin, Jonathan Murphy, Don Frye, Eric Tiede, Whitney Davis | Written by Jonathan Murphy | Directed by John Woodruff

Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were murdered at Merrymaker Campgrounds. The case was filed as an animal attack, the camp was condemned, and the killer never found. Now, years later Poppy (Christine Donlon) and Anita Bishop (Larisa Oleynik) get set to re-open their parent’s camp. And they even invite Roland Baumgarner (Christian Oliver), the novelist who made his name by penning a bestseller about the case, to the opening.

Billed as yet another Bigfoot/sasquatch movie, Animal Among Us is actually anything but. It is in fact a melding of genre tropes: monster movie, cabin in the woods film, survival horror, dramatic thriller, all rolled into one – sadly – dull genre film saved only by a surprising performance by former Alex Mack Larisa Oleynik.

Animal Among Us Review: A Different Approach to Sasquatch Horror
Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in Friday (1995)
Described as Friday the 13th meets Dog Soldiers, Uncork'd Entertainment's Animal Among Us might be the most bizarre sasquatch-horror movie you'll ever see. Directed by John Woodruff using a screenplay by Jonathan Murphy, Animal Among Us is filled with nods to classic horror movies from the '70s and '80s. This makes watching the movie a fun experience for old school horror fans, but as it's not a straight-up gorefest like some of those classic slasher films. To be clear, while it contains elements of slasher movies and Bigfoot horror, Animal Among Us is not really either of those types of movies, as it tells an intriguing story without an abundance of blood.

Christian Oliver (Sense8) stars in Animal Among Us as Roland Baumgarner, an author who penned a book called The Merrymaker Murderer. The best-selling book was about the actual murders of two young girls fifteen years...

In a Nutshell: Ninja Apocalypse
Remember that level in Streets of Rage where you battle a horde of bad guys on a lift as you make your way up to the final boss? That's what Ninja Apocalypse reminded me of. But without the awesomeness. Obviously. Ninja Apocalypse isn't a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, it's just not a very good one either. Directed by Lloyd Lee Barnett, who worked on the visual effects for big budget pictures like Avatar, Spiderman and The Lord of the Rings, Ninja Apocalypse reads like a goofy concept on paper but takes itself way too seriously for that. Thankfully, as you would expect considering his track record in the industry, Barnett does conjure up some nifty effects work along the way. It's not much but it certainly takes the focus away from the lukewarm action choreography. Framed for assassinating Grandmaster Fumitaka (Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat), the...

‘Ninja Apocalypse’ DVD Review
Stars: Christian Oliver, Les Brandt, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Ernie Reyes Jr., Isaac C. Singleton Jr., Kaiwi Lyman, West Liang, Tara Macken, Antoinette Kalaj, Alvin Hsing, Bryan Cartago, Mark Heidelberger | Written by Ashley Scott Meyers | Directed by Lloyd Lee Barnett

Not to be confused with the Don Wong starring, badly dubbed, poorly edited film of the same name – which I distinctly remember hiring from my local video shop – Ninja Apocalypse is set years after the great war, and the titular apocalypse, where humanity has become divided into separate clans of ninjas. Clans, which besides having your usual ninja-like martial arts skills, are also blessed with strange supernatural powers: some of which look like they stepped straight out of a video game – you know the type, the typical fireballs, lightning strikes and telekinesis.

Discovering a plot to attack their land, Grandmaster Fumitaka calls on the clans under his control to a meeting deep...

‘Hercules Reborn’ DVD Review
Stars: John Hennigan, Christian Oliver, Marcus Shirock, James Duval, Dylan Vox, Christina Ulfsparre | Written by Jim Hemphill | Directed by Nick Lyon

The second Hercules movie we’ve reviewed here in the space of a week, Hercules Reborn is a product of mockbuster kings The Asylum and unlike The Legend of Hercules, which told the story of Hercules discovering who he is, this iteration of the mythical hero’s take takes place after he kills his wife and children in a fit of madness and is now living in exile, banished for the murders. However when the bride of Arius, an officer in the Greek army, is seized during a bloody coup by a ruthless Greek general, the soldier turns to the legendary Hercules for help. Initially Hercules refuses, but when he sees this as a chance for salvation, he agrees to help Arius. Together they must battle the general’s army,...

Ninjas Vs. Zombies in Trailer for Ninja Apocalypse
Here's a trailer for an awesome-looking martial arts fantasy film called Ninja Apocalypse. The movie was directed by Lloyd Lee Barnett, who has worked on the visual effects for films such as Avatar, Speed Racer, and Spider-Man. Judging from the trailer it looks like there will be some fun humor mixed in with some crazy cool action sequences involving martial arts mixed with magical powers. It looks like it will be a really entertaining, action-packed flick! The movie has a Mortal Kombat kind of feel to it, but it also has zombies! Not much is known about the plot of the film yet, but this trailer gives you a solid idea of what to expect.

The cast of the film includes Christian Oliver (The Three Musketeers), Ernie Reyes Jr. (The Rundown), Les Brandt, West Liang, Kaiwi Lyman, Tara Macken, Isaac C. Singleton Jr., Antoinette Kalaj, Mark Heidelberger, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa...

Exclusive Q&A with House of Good and Evil’s Rachel Marie Lewis
House of Good and Evil is a movie we’ve been keeping an eye on since its first appearance in our Indie Spotlight and it’s headed to DVD on April 1st. For the latest installment of our Q&A series, Derek Anderson had a chance to catch up with the movie’s star, Rachel Marie Lewis, to learn about her experience on set:

You’ve played characters in dramas, comedies, and romances, but to my knowledge, your role as Maggie Conley in House of Good and Evil was your first time acting in a horror movie. What was it like to play a character in that genre for the first time?

Rachel Marie Lewis: It was great and certainly stretched me, that’s for sure. Every day was emotionally and physically tedious, so preparation was absolutely crucial.

Your character, Maggie, displays a wide emotional range as she copes...

Review: House of Good and Evil
It’s difficult to forget the past, but that’s what Maggie Conley (Rachel Marie Lewis) and her husband, Chris (Christian Oliver), are trying to do in director David Mun’s feature debut, House of Good and Evil. Maggie and Chris have a particularly haunting past to put behind them, one that includes verbal arguments, physical abuse, and the devastating loss of their unborn child. Intent on starting life anew, Chris and Maggie move out of their apartment in Baltimore and head deep into the Virginia woods to live in a rustic, white clapboard duplex.

The Andersons, an elderly husband and wife living in the other half of the duplex, will be their only neighbors for miles before they move out in a month’s time. Before they can even finish unpacking, though, Maggie realizes the isolated, possibly haunted house actually enables Chris’s hostile nature, putting her sanity and very life in jeopardy.

Counting Down the Minutes with House of Good and Evil: A Movie Review
Director: David Mun. Writer: Blu de Golyer. Cast: Rachel Marie Lewis and Christian Oliver. The House of Good and Evil is an indie psychological thriller? from director David Mun and writer Blu de Golyer. This title has released on several video-on-demand formats, recently. And, film fans will want to avoid this film like the plague. House of Good and Evil has an unusually long runtime for a film in which nothing really happens. One hundred and ten minutes of uneventful scenarios and situations will drain the energy of many viewers as this film simply spins its wheels. Pacing issues and dark shooting also hamper any enjoyment. This film is another entry into "Worst Indie Film for 2013." The story, when stripped down, is non-existant. Instead, the film is a character study of a very traumatized young woman, named Maggie (Rachel Marie Lewis). You will see this character brush her teeth, mope...
