All of Us Strangers wins big at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards
Ray Winstone
The winners of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) were announced at the annual ceremony at Old Billingsgate with BIFA patron Ray Winstone kicking off the celebration of independent film.

The award for Best British Independent Film, presented by Fiona Shaw, went to Andrew Haigh’s ‘All of Us Strangers’, a beautifully unsettling tale of a writer revisiting his past, starring Andrew Scott. Haigh, who was previously BIFA nominated for 2015’s 45 Years and 2018’s Lean on Pete, also came away with the coveted awards for Best Director sponsored by Sky Cinema and Best Screenplay sponsored by Apple Original Films.

There were two winners announced for Best Supporting Performance from a field of ten nominees and Paul Mescal took one of those trophies for his role in the film. All of Us Strangers won four awards on the night.

Best Lead Performance went to Mia McKenna-Bruce in Molly Manning Walker...

All Of Us Strangers soared at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards
Andrew Haigh
Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.

Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.

Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Occupied City Trailer: Steve McQueen's Documentary Explores WWII Crimes Through Modern Imagery
Image
A24 released the trailer for Steve McQueen's documentary Occupied City, which contrasts modern-day Amsterdam with life under Nazi occupation during World War II. Instead of relying on archival footage, McQueen used 36 hours of film collected over three years to create a powerful juxtaposition between the present and the past. McQueen emphasizes that the film is not just about the past, but also about the present, urging viewers to question everything and learn from history.

A24 has unveiled the trailer for the thought-provoking documentary Occupied City from Academy Award winning filmmaker Steve McQueen. As visuals of everyday life in Amsterdam flash on the screen– children skating, a game of chess, youth in school– we hear narrator Melanie Hyams speak of a different time. While using modern day footage, Occupied City details happenings in the Netherlands capital from 1940 to 1945, chronicling the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam and the horrendous crimes against Jews...

‘Occupied City’ Trailer: Steve McQueen’s Four-Hour World War II Documentary Is Years in the Making
Image
Steve McQueen seeps into an old world for a new feature.

McQueen’s whopping four-hour long documentary “Occupied City” charts a five-year period from 1940 to 1945 during World War II in Amsterdam. Based on historian and filmmaker Bianca Stigter’s “Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945),” the documentary uses archival footage that McQueen spent three years collecting.

The official synopsis reads: The past collides with our precarious present in Steve McQueen’s bravura documentary Occupied City, informed by the book “Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945),” written by Bianca Stigter. McQueen creates two interlocking portraits: a door-to-door excavation of the Nazi occupation that still haunts his adopted city, and a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest. What emerges is both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on memory, time, and where we’re headed.

Melanie Hyams narrates the A24 and New Regency film, which debuted at Cannes.

‘Three Minutes — A Lengthening’: Super Ltd Acquires Bianca Stigter Holocaust Doc Co-Produced By Steve McQueen & Narrated By Helena Bonham Carter
Image
Super Ltd has acquired North American rights to Bianca Stigter’s Three Minutes — A Lengthening, a Holocaust documentary co-produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown). The doc will be released in theaters next year.

Stigter’s first feature-length doc centers on a three-minute home movie shot by David Kurtz on a European holiday in 1938, in a Jewish town in Poland. The amateur footage— discovered by Kurtz’s grandson, writer Glenn Kurtz, in his parents’ Florida home—captures the Jewish inhabitants of Nasielsk just one year before the Nazis invaded. Most were eventually killed in the Treblinka extermination camp.

Family Affairs Films’ Floor Onrust produced Stigter’s meditation on history and memory with Lammas Park, with the support of The Netherlands Film Fund and Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.

The film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival...

Image
The film is directed by Dutch filmmaker Bianca Stigter.

Austrian documentary sales specialist Autlook has acquired world rights to Three Minutes - A Lengthening, a new feature documentary by leading Dutch director, producer, director and cultural critic, Bianca Stigter.

Three Minutes – A Lengthening is based around a home movie shot by David Kurtz with a 16mm camera in a Jewish town in Poland in 1938 and poses the questions: can a film of three minutes last for over an hour? Stigter examines these three minutes of film, to unravel the stories hidden in the celluloid, narrated by actress Helena Bonham Carter.
