Before Friends, Matthew Perry Starred In A Sitcom That's Nearly Impossible To Watch Today

If you've read Matthew Perry's memoir, "Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing," you'll know how important fame was to the young actor. Perry, who sadly passed away in 2023, wrote about how, prior to playing Chandler Bing in "Friends" and becoming a global megastar, fame seemed as though it would "change everything" for him. "I yearned for it more than any other person on the face of the planet," he wrote. "It was the only thing that would fix me. I was certain of it."

Though he would eventually get his wish and quickly find out that it wasn't quite the salve he expected, Perry spent years trying to attain fame and recognition. It didn't come quickly. The actor made his first on-screen appearance as a child in the TV series "240-Robert" back in 1979. But after moving to Los...

The Six Million Dollar Man (1973-1978): Gone But Not Forgotten
Image
The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV (as we explored on last week’s Land of the Lost episode). Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.

But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.

The Six Million Dollar Man would jump into television history with a premise that was brilliant,...

He-Man and Morris the Cat Voice Actor John Erwin Dies at 88
Image
Voice actor John Erwin passed away. The actor was behind several iconic characters, including He-Man and Morris The Cat.

Deadline released the news that John Erwin passed away in December of "natural causes" at his home in Camarillo, California. The voice actor was 88. His death was further confirmed by his PR firm, Celebworx, which confirmed the star passed away "around Dec. 20, 2024," and, since he was a very private man, had shared no photographs of himself with his publicity firm.

The actor was born on Dec. 5, 1936, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and started his career in entertainment in the late '50s in 1959's Rawhide, where he voiced Teddy in 2022 episodes. However, his most defining role was voicing He-Man in several series starting 1983, including He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. He also voiced Beast Man in the same animated series. Although Erwin played He-Man in the original animated series, he returned to...

John Erwin: The voice actor famous for portraying He-Man and Morris the Cat has died at 88
Image
It’s a sad day in Eternia as news about the passing of John Erwin, the voice actor behind He-Man, Morris the Cat, and other notable pop culture icons. Erwin, a Saturday morning staple of the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, died last month of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California. He was 88. Celebworx, the PR firm representing Mr. Erwin, announced his death this Friday afternoon.

Few people of the Elder Millenial generation (people born between 1980 and 1985) grew up without hearing John Erwin as He-man, Master of the Universe, match wits with Skeletor (Alan Oppenheimer) while battling the forces of evil. In addition to voicing He-Man and the Archie Comics character Reggie, Erwin played the unenthusiastic spokescat for 9Lives brand cat food, Morris the Cat. In the promos, Morris, a large orange tabby tomcat, snarkily remarked about being uninterested in anything except when it came to a delicious can of 9Lives cat food.

John Erwin Dead Aged 88; Mourned by She-Ra and Skeletor Actors
Image
As the world prepares to see a new He-Man hit the big screen next year, it has been sadly reported that the voice behind the original animated version of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe character, John Erwin, has died aged 88. The actor, who began his career working in adverts in the late 1960s, made a number of other appearances, but for many, it was his role as He-Man that he will be most remembered for. As well as leading the show in the role of He-Man, Erwin also played the monstrously dim-witted Beast Man.

According to PR firm Celebworx, who represented the star, Erwin actually died last month, “around December 20,” of natural causes. The announcement not only drew reactions from many children of the ‘80s, but also Erwin’s costars, Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced Skeletor, and Melendy Britt, who provided the voice of She-Ra. In a...

John Erwin Dies: Voice Actor Behind ‘He-Man’ And Morris The Cat Was 88
Image
John Erwin, the voice behind such iconic animated and animal TV characters as He-Man, Morris The Cat, the snobby Reggie of the Archie cartoons and many other Saturday morning favorites of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, died last month of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California. He was 88.

His death was announced today by his PR firm Celebworx.

Melendy Britt, who voiced the character She-Ra, superheroine sister of superhero He-Man in Filmation’s Masters of the Universe world, said in a statement, “For 40 years, John Erwin was not only my brother on screen, he was my friend.”

“To have ‘my brother’ pass on is a tremdeous sorrow even though I know life is not infinite,” Britt wrote on Facebook. “The tears I have are because John was such a special quiet man and we shared a very special relationship in those roles as twin brother and sister…He...

John Erwin, Voice Actor in ‘He-Man’ and ‘Archie’ Cartoons, Dies at 88
Image
John Erwin, the reclusive actor who provided the voices for the heroic title character in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the vain frenemy Reggie Mantle in a series of Archie cartoons, has died. He was 88.

Erwin died of natural causes “around Dec. 20” in his home in Camarillo, California, his reps at the PR firm Celebworx announced.

For nearly a decade starting in 1969, Erwin was heard in dozens of TV commercials as the snarky Morris the Cat, the finicky orange tabby who would eat nothing but the 9Lives brand of cat food. The hugely successful campaign was created by the Leo Burnett advertising firm.

Earlier, Erwin was seen on camera when he recurred as the cattle driver Teddy on CBS’ Rawhide, starring Clint Eastwood.

For Filmmation, Erwin voiced the blond, muscular He-Man (and his alter ego, Prince Adam) on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe from 1983-...

The Only Main Actors Still Alive From 1973's Westworld Movie
Image
As Hollywood adjusted to the whims and desires of Baby Boomer moviegoers heading into the 1970s, studios found themselves making fewer and fewer Westerns. Long one of the most reliably profitable genres, younger viewers who'd come of age rebelling against much of what their parents held dear were turned off by this continued mythologizing of how America pursued its manifest destiny. They rejected John Wayne, but turned out for Italian-produced Spaghetti Westerns, especially those starring Clint Eastwood. As a result, the only semi-traditional Hollywood Westerns Boomers would embrace tended to feature Eastwood in the starring role (e.g. "High Plains Drifter" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales").

One notable exception to the Eastwood rule was Michael Crichton's sci-fi/Western blend "Westworld." The 1973 film stars Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as a pair of buddies who take a vacation to an adult amusement park called Delos to live out their dreams...

Alan Oppenheimer's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Kicking off his career with various television roles in the early 1960s, Alan Oppenheimer would go on to have a prolific career over six decades, still working to this day, though his output as an actor has slowed down considerably over the years. Oppenheimer's career really took off in the '70s, and his notable credits include Westworld in 1973 and The Six Million Dollar Man, which premiered in the same year.

Although Oppenheimer has several credits in live-action shows and movies, it was his prolific voice-acting career that helped cement him as one of the best animated actors of all time. Oppenheimer has lent his talents to a variety of projects over the years, including voicing iconic characters in some of the most influential animated shows of all time. His work as Skeletor is a particular standout, but only the tip of the iceberg that is Alan Oppenheimer's monumental career.

Idris Elba to live the journey as Man-at-Arms Duncan in Masters of the Universe
Image
Idris Elba is ready to live the journey, as he has been cast as Man-at-Arms aka Duncan in the upcoming live-action version of Masters of the Universe.

Idris Elba follows in the footsteps of past Duncans Alan Oppenheimer (the mid-’80s animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe), Jon Cypher (1987’s live-action flick with Dolph Lundgren), Liam Cunningham (Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation), and more. He will be joined in the cast by Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn and Camila Mendes as Teela.

Obviously there are still a handful of key roles that need to be cast (chiefly Skeletor – is Willem Dafoe too obvious?), but this news comes as welcome, as Idris Elba always brings top-tier work to every project he takes on – come on, the guy is crushing Knuckles right now! It’s also a bit of a surprise pick, but one...

Judith Light Addresses Who's the Boss? Reboot's Fate and Possible Return as Angela Bower
Image
The classic sitcom, Whos the Boss?, ran from 1984-1992, and there had been talks about reviving the show on Amazon Freevee. One of its stars, Judith Light, who played advertising executive Angela Bower in all 196 episodes of the series, told Variety shed be delighted if the series moved forward with another streamer or network.

I would be delighted, Light said. But in terms of where I am and the workload that I have right now, I dont know what my availability would be. When I started my career, I said Id never do a soap opera and Id never do a sitcom. Well, I did both those things. Then I said I would never marry an actor. And I did just that. So, I learned to never say never.

I would be delighted [to return].

Light is married to actor Robert Desiderio, who starred in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live opposite Light.

15 Best Animated Movies With A Robot Protagonist
Image
Robot cartoon movies have been a staple of family films for decades, especially since the cartoon format allows for more inventive and imaginative character designs. While many have robots simply as supporting characters, there are also plenty that feature a robot protagonist, either as a helping hand for the story's hero or even as the hero themselves. The first robot in a movie was in 1927's Metropolis, which was live-action, but once the animated film industry got in full swing, hand-drawn (and later CGI) robots became a regular sight.

Animated movies tend to take the opposite view of artificial intelligence, too. Whereas most live-action movie robots are evil, their animated counterparts tend to be much more wholesome. From modern hits such as The Mitchells vs. The Machines to classics like The Iron Giant, there are plenty of movies that suggest something other than evil can come from androids with artificial intelligence.

Dark Horses Masters of the Universe: Revolution miniseries has retold Skeletors origin, stressing his connection to Hordak as well. In issue four, the conclusion, Skeletor gets a new backstory, one that not only makes him a tragic figure but consolidates elements of his various origins the franchise has given.

Skeletor has been voiced by several different actors, including Alan Oppenheimer and Mark Hamill.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution #4 is written by Tim Sheridan, Rob David and Ted Biaselli and drawn by Daniel Hdr. There Were 3 Ghostbusters TV Shows, but Only 1 Was Real
Image
The original live-action Ghost Busters featured a bumbling trio of detectives fighting paranormal creatures with a ghost de-materializer. The 1986 animated version, Ghostbusters, was a sequel with new characters battling a ghost wizard named Prime Evil. Filmation's Ghostbusters faced challenges against Columbia Pictures' version, leading to quick cancellation and regrets from the executive producer.

Do you remember The Ghost Busters show? The live-action children’s sitcom ran on CBS for one season during the mid-1970s and centered around three slapstick paranormal detectives — Jake Kong, Eddie Spencer, and Tracy. The last name was actually a gorilla with a trademark beanie propeller hat. This bumbling trio would retrieve their weekly assignment from a cassette tape that was hidden inside a department store.

Never seen but only heard, their boss Zero would usually have them fight against the likes of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, or even the ghost of Billy the Kid. With...

Which Star Trek Actors Are in Masters of the Universe: Revolution?
Image
Masters of the Universe was developed by Mattel after it lost the chance to make Star Wars toys in the 1970s and 1980s. Masters of the Universe: Revolution features many voice actors who have close ties to popular sci-fi franchises, including Star Trek. From all-powerful aliens to the best mother figures in the galaxy, Star Trek and Masters of the Universe: Revolution: Revolution share a lot of acting DNA.

The following contains major spoilers from Masters of the Universe: Revolution Season 1 now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revolution grows He-Man, his supporting cast, and the world in fun and mature ways. However, the universe only exists because Mattel needed a story to sell their line of "space barbarian" toys. While it's a celebration of this wild collection of characters and settings, Masters of the Universe: Revolution is also a mini-reunion of Star Trek actors.

Before the casting of Star Trek actors,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Six Million Dollar Man
Image
When we talk about classic TV shows from the '70s, it's hard not to mention "The Six Million Dollar Man." Airing for five seasons on ABC, the show focuses on astronaut Steve Austin who is gravely injured in a spaceship crash. He then undergoes a government surgery that replaces his body parts with machine parts, making him part man, part cyborg. With the new powers afforded him by these upgrades, Steve goes to work for the Office of Scientific Information, battling evil forces.

The show ran for 99 episodes and inspired six TV movies. Mark Wahlberg has even been attached to star in a big-screen adaptation of the show for years now, with the project stalling out at various points. But Lee Majors was the man responsible for originally bringing the character to life. 50 years removed from the show's premiere on network television, Majors and several other of the show's...

The First Animated X-Men Show Never Made It Past The Pilot Stage
Image
1992's "X-Men" cartoon was the first time Marvel's Merry Mutants got a series all of their own, but was it the first time they appeared in animation? Not quite.

The team were guest stars on the early 1980s series "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", as was their nemesis Magneto. A few years down the line, Marvel Productions decided to produce an "X-Men" cartoon themselves.

The resulting pilot was "Pryde of the X-Men". "Pryde" boasted animation from Japanese studio Toei ("Dragon Ball Z"), and so looked noticeably more detailed and dynamic than previous Marvel cartoons. Where it did overlap with those older cartoons was the voice cast: the late John Stephenson as Professor X, Michael Bell as Cyclops, Neil Ross as Nightcrawler, Dan Gilvezan as Colossus, and a young Kath Soucie as Kitty.

Patrick Pinney, as Wolverine, infamously gives his character an Australian accent (apparently a synergistic holdover from a...

Why Transformers' Voice Actor David Kaye Was So Surprised By His Optimus Prime Casting
Image
Voice actor David Kaye still remembers getting the news he'd been cast on "Transformers: Animated." Two weeks after a callback where he read for multiple characters, he got a call from his agent. Kaye, who was driving in downtown LA, answered his phone and heard the news: he'd got the part ... of Optimus Prime. Kaye's response as he swerved his car: "Who?!"

While Kaye had read for Optimus Prime (and noticed voice director Susan Blu liked what he was doing), he walked into the audition expecting to get a different part. The part, in fact, that was furthest from Optimus Prime — Megatron. At the time, Kaye had been voicing Megatron for about a decade, first in "Beast Wars."

During the 1990s and 2000s, Kaye was a staple of Canada's voice-acting pool. Mainframe Entertainment, based in Vancouver, developed "Beast Wars" and recruited local talent, Kaye among them. A few years later,...

13 Best Movies About Dragons, Ranked
Image
Let's be real: Dragons are awesome! Since ancient Mesopotamians whispered about Tiamat and Marduk's red serpent servant, the legend of dragons thrived. For generations, these scaly creatures have induced fear and delight. Tolkien drew from these myths to bring the creature into the modern fantasy canon, with his childhood love of Fafnir, Siegfried's legendary foe, transformed into the prideful Smaug. Now the fantasy genre is almost synonymous with dragons. Of course, the '70s introduction of Dungeons & Dragons helped, too! Today, there's a resurgence of love for these big fellas -- starring in movies like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Raya and the Last Dragon."

Putting dragons on the big screen is a huge technical challenge. Not every movie's budget can commit to that feat. For decades, animation came to the rescue -- pitching price-conscious versions to younger and more accepting viewers. But after the release of "Jurassic Park,...

Alan Oppenheimer Had No Trouble Finding Voices For The NeverEnding Story's Fantasy Creatures
Image
Up until a few years ago, there was a shady little pub here in Brno, Czech Republic, that only had one desirable feature: A six-foot statue of the lovable Rockbiter creature from "The NeverEnding Story." I would even take people there to suffer bad beer just so we could marvel at that unexpected monument to Wolfgang Petersen's dark fantasy adventure. It wasn't the only legacy of the film's enduring popularity around here; Limahl's title song, which was a hit single across Europe, is still played on regular rotation on the local radio station. It is one of the many benefits of living in the Czech Republic.

"The NeverEnding Story," based on the first half of Michael Ende's epic fantasy novel, was Petersen's next project after spending three years making his tense U-boat drama, "Das Boot." The German director received an Oscar nomination for his troubles but wanted...

The Daily Stream: Private Benjamin Is An Unapologetic Feminist Icon
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Private Benjamin" (1980)

Where You Can Stream It: Showtime

The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.

Judy was a divorcée (she was previously married at 20) and widow by the age of 28. Her family didn't know what to do with her,...

Wolfgang Petersen Traumatized An Entire Generation Of Children With That Scene In The NeverEnding Story.
Image
The late Wolfgang Petersen's 1984 film "The NeverEnding Story," while ostensibly a fantasy film, lacks the genre's expected sense of lighthearted, dazzling wonderment. Indeed, the film's fantasy sequences bear a tragic note of muddy entropy, and fantastical characters live in a state of resigned abnegation. Despite amazing special effects and myriad imaginative monsters, "The NeverEnding Story" is most notable for its overwhelming ennui. A savvy youth might be so beleaguered by the film's sadness, they may find its final moments of triumph to feel artificial, like the hero may only be imagining his own escape from pain. The film ends with a moment of mourning, of acceptance that a parent is dead. Some find the film uplifting. Others may not.

The plot of "The NeverEnding Story" follows a young boy named Bastian (Barret Oliver) who recently lost his mother and who is beset by bullies at school. When he absconds...

He-Man: How Skeletor’s Meme Status Influenced Netflix Series
Ben Diskin
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’s most popular character should be He-Man, right? His name is in the title! Anyone who’s watched almost any incarnation of the franchise though knows who the real star of the show is. Skeletor, the big bad of the series. Even if you’ve never watched an episode you’ve now doubt seen a gif rendition of Skeletor’s iconic laugh or heard his “Nyeh!” Compilations of his insults have racked up millions of views on YouTube and his face graces endless memes. The character is etched in pop culture history.

Jeff Matsuda, Co-Executive Producer of the new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series on Netflix, felt the pressure of bringing a new version of the iconic character to life specifically because of all the memes. With this in mind he knew the team behind the series had to not...

He-Man, Teela Makeovers Revealed in First Look at Netflix’s ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’
Image
Mattel Television and Netflix released the first look “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” and it turns out the characters — including He-Man, Skeletor, Teela and Orko — look a lot like they did on the beloved 1980s animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” just a bit glowed up.

They also announced the show will premiere globally on July 23.

Since the series was announced in 2019, fans have been speculating just what executive producer and showrunner Kevin Smith — writer-director of “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma” — would be doing with the property. As the images make clear, Smith and the team at Powerhouse Animation (also the animation studio behind Netflix’s “Castlevania” series) are paying homage not just to the look of the original series, but its storylines as well.

“So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production...

These are just a few of the movies would be given a shot to make a ton of money in the world of Saturday Morning Cartoons. Some of the cartoons on this list were more successful than others, but by and large making the leap from...

Bear McCreary's Masters of the Universe: Revelation Score Teaser Almost Makes Kevin Smith Cry
Image
Kevin Smith is getting teary eyed again over the fact that he just announced that composer Bear McCreary is scoring Master of the Universe: Revelation. From the sound of things, Netflix's anime series based on the He-Man franchise is going to be pretty epic, and Smith, who serves as showrunner on the series, can't wait to share what they have all been working on for the past year.

Bear McCreary is the composer behind The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Outlander, and much more. Kevin Smith played McCreary's score from when Prince Adam will be transforming into He-Man, se we even get a hint of Chris Wood's take on the iconic character as he declares, "I have the Power!" Beyond He-Man and She-Ra: celebrating the Filmation legacy
Andrew Younger Sep 2, 2016

Tarzan, Space Sentinels, The New Adventures Of Batman, Flash Gordon, Bravestarr and more, as we salute Filmation...

For a child of the 1970s and 80s, nothing readied you for a half hour of quality entertainment quite like the Filmation logo. Immortalised by their phenomenal success with He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and its spin off She-Ra: Princess Of Power, Filmation produced some of the most fondly remembered animated series to grace the small screen.

Over a period of 26 years - in tandem with classic Doctor Who funnily enough - the company's writers, artists and producers delivered a staggering amount of programming. While naysayers point to Filmation's penchant for reusing a stockpile of rotoscoped body movements, or the heavy handedness of its moralising and educational content - children on the other hand, thrilled to an irresistible mixture of action, adventure and superhuman heroes.

Now something of a lost art form,...

The original movie, which was written and directed by Michael Crichton, starred Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin, centering on an amusement park in the future where humans can live out their fantasies with the help of androids. When a malfunction occurs, the robots start hunting down the humans. No details were given regarding how the story may be updated.

Jonathan Nolan is co-writing the pilot script with Burn Notice writer Lisa Joy, who will both executive produce the pilot alongside J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk and Kathy Lingg.

HBO Orders Westworld TV Series Pilot
For years, we’ve heard about attempts to remake Westworld and it’s actually happening this time. HBO has officially committed to a pilot order for a potential Westworld TV series.

Jonathan Nolan, brother of Christopher Nolan, will direct the pilot and will co-write the script with Lisa Joy, according to Variety. This is a Bad Robot production, so J.J. Abrams will serve as an executive producer, along with Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Bryan Burk, and Jerry Weintraub

The series has been described as a “dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” Keep in mind that HBO has only committed to the pilot at this point, so the strength of that episode will determine if this gets a full series order.

The 1973 sci-fi movie was directed and written by Michael Crichton, and starred Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Alan Oppenheimer, Dick Van Patten, and Yul Brynner...

The Smurfs have landed on the big-screen and the movie is a hit. While it will take awhile for the feature film to be offered on DVD, the original cartoon adventures are available already.

As you may recall, The Smurfs ran from 1981 until 1989 and were a cornerstone of NBC's Saturday morning line-up.
