A Million Miles Away and The Long Game were the big film winners the 39th annual Imagen Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles.

Amazon MGM Studios’ A Million Miles Away took Best Director for Alejandra Márquez Abella and three other awards, including Best Actress-Film for Rosa Salazar. The Long Game from Mucho Mas Media was named Best Feature Film and also won two trophies for acting. See the full list below.

This fall, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, Rosita, and other furry friends from Sesame Street will embark on a two-month Uso tour to military installations throughout Europe.

Sesame Street and the Uso head overseas to perform for service members and their families

The 2017 Sesame Street/Uso Experience for Military Families will perform more than 30 shows at 19 military bases in six countries; each 30-minute costumed character performance will center around the challenges military families face on a regular basis, including frequent moves and the military-to-civilian transition. The tour will kick off on September 11th at Nas Sigonella in Italy before journeying to Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain, wrapping up in mid-November.

“Since 2006, the Sesame Street/Uso tour has brought to life the resources we’ve developed to help military families navigate the unique challenges they face,” said Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop’s Senior Vice President of U.

That's right - meet Armando, a new neighbor on Sesame Street, who, I'm sure, will be bringing a dose of cultural diversity along with him to the Sesame neighborhood. Armando (or "Mando" as he'll apparently be called by the rest of the community) is a writer, and will be played by actor Ismael Cruz Cordova (above) an Nyu Tisch School of the Arts graduate as well as an actor who's appeared in TV shows like The Good Wife. Move over Elmo, there’s a new character on the block.

"Sesame Street" has announced they are introducing a new Latino character and his name is Armando. As it heads into its 44th season the classic kids show will focus on Hispanic heritage.

Armando or ‘Mando’ as he will be known on the show is a writer from Puerto Rico. He will not be the first bilingual character on the cast, "Sesame Street" already has Muppets Rosita and Ovejita, as well as Luis and Maria, according to a press release from Sesame Workshop.

The search for the newest Latino addition began in August 2012 and many hopefuls passed through the auditions that tested their Spanish fluency, vocal abilities and comedic timing.

The lucky winner was Ismael Cruz Córdova a Puerto Rico native with a Bfa from Nyu Tisch School of the Arts.

"Sesame Street" might be full of "sunny days" and "friendly neighbors," but that hasn't stopped the people behind the beloved kids show from tackling dark and often difficult topics -- like divorce -- head-on.

On Tuesday, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit that operates "Sesame Street," launched "Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce" -- a set of free resources offered online for families coping with divorce. The tools are designed to help kids between the ages of 2 and 8 deal with and understand their parents' divorces, and help parents talk about divorce with their children in an age-appropriate way.

As part of the initiative, a 13-minute segment will appear online that features popular puppets such as Elmo and Abby Cadabby (see above for a short clip). The segment will not air on TV.

Jamie Naidoo, an assistant professor at University of Alabama's School of Library and Information Studies, who's research focuses on the representation of minority populations in print and non-print media, assisted in the show's effort to incorporate accurate portrayals of Latino culture.

“My specific role was to describe how Latinos are represented in children’s print materials, both positive and negative portrayals, and suggest ideas for including Latino cultural content into their various outlets to go along with their new initiative,” Naidoo said according to the Tuscaloosa News.

Naidoo directs the National Latino Children’s Literature Conference, which he co-developed in 2007. He runs “Imag&iacutenense Libros!”, a blog which reviews children’s and young adult Latino literature.
