Melvins 1983, the alternate configuration of the Buzz Osborne-fronted band, have announced a new album, Thunderball, out April 18th. The lead single “Victory of the Pyramids” can be streamed now.
It marks the third full-length album under the Melvins 1983 moniker, featuring Osborne alongside original Melvins drummer Mike Dillard. Electronic artists Void Manes and Ni Maîtres were also brought in to contribute to the new recordings, adding another sonic layer to the mix.

Pushing nearly 10 minutes in length, “Victory of the Pyramids” is a minor epic — “a lovely blend of beautiful noise and gut-busting grooves,” as Dillard put it — showcasing the full force of the 1983 lineup.
Dillard’s propulsive drumming lays the bedrock for a winding arrangement that opens with an upbeat punk/power-pop section that Osborne eventually steers into the Melvins’ typically sludgy domain. The contributions of Void Manes and Ni Maîtres can be heard during the latter half,...

Mr. Bungle welcomed a special guest for a cover of Van Halen’s “Loss of Control” at the Graspop Metal Meeting festival in Belgium on Saturday (June 22nd). None other than Wolfgang Van Halen joined Mike Patton and company for a rousing version of the tune off 1980’s Women and Children First.

Ipecac Recordings, the indie label co-founded by Greg Werckman and Mike Patton, is celebrating its 25th anniversary by reissuing three Fantômas albums on vinyl.
Werckman and Patton founded Ipecac in 1999 to release the self-titled debut by Fantômas — the experimental rock supergroup featuring Patton alongside Buzz Osborne, Dave Lombardo, and Trevor Dunn. The idea was to retain all creative control following Patton’s major label experiences with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, and Ipecac has remained a vital and active underground label since its formation.
Expanding out from Fantômas, Ipecac has since released albums by the likes The Melvins, Mr. Bungle, Isis, Faith No More, Eagles of Death Metal, Dälek (whose debut Negro Necro Nekros is also being reissued for the 25th anniversary), and many more.
“A label does not last 25 years without consumer support,” said Werckman via a press release. “We are not the biggest or hippest record label,...

Grunge rock’s most indefatigable missionaries, Melvins, will return this spring with Tarantula Heart, their umpteenth release since the turn of the millennium (or is that umphundredth?). As with every release, the group — buoyed by singer-guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover, since 1983 — have put a new spin on the genre. On the wild “Allergic to Food,” the latest single to come off the album, due out April 19, they dial up the cacophony with even-deeper-than-usual swirls of guitar, drums, and noise with even more musicians.

The Melvins have offered up “Allergic to Food,” the second single from their forthcoming album Tarantula Heart.
The band manages to convey the sonic equivalent of being stricken by a food allergy and all the instant anxiety that comes with it. Unwieldy guitars clash against a foray of unrelenting percussion, immediately calling to mind the hyper noise rock of Melt Banana. And there’s no coming up for air, as Dale Crover and Roy Mayorga’s dueling drum tracks continue to compound on one another in a tornadic flurry.
It’s certainly the flip side of the slower and sludgier lead single “Working the Ditch,” though both tracks showcase the might of the Melvins’ expanded lineup on the new album.
“The way we approached Tarantula Heart was different than any other Melvins’ album,” said frontman Buzz Osborne upon the album’s announcement. “I had Dale and Roy come in and...

The Melvins have announced a new album, Tarantula Heart, and shared the video for “Working the Ditch” ahead of the LP’s April 19th release date.
Billed as one of the veteran band’s most eccentric records to date, Tarantula Heart sees King Buzzo and company in collaboration with Ministry drummer Ray Mayorga and We Are the Asteroid guitarist and longtime Melvins associate Gary Chester, supplementing the group’s core lineup.
As heard on “Working the Ditch,” the additional instrumentalists result in new musical textures and an expanded sound, featuring double-tracked drums — Mayorga and Dale Crover’s takes stacked and edited together — and Chester’s lead guitar, which creates a post-metal haze against Buzzo’s more brutal riffs and barked vocals.

A surprise Fantômas reunion took place Wednesday night (May 24th) in Oakland, California, during the final show of Mr. Bungle’s “Geek Show” tour with Melvins.
The reunion wasn’t too far out of the realm of possibility considering three of the band’s four members — Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, and Dave Lombardo — are currently in Mr. Bungle. Once Buzz Osborne of Melvins took the stage, the supergroup’s lineup was complete, along with the bonus additions of Bungle guitarists Trey Spruance and Scott Ian.
Osborne sat in with Mr. Bungle for a rendition of The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo track “Sudden Death” before the group launched into Fantômas’ cover of Henri Mancini‘s “Experiment in Terror” (featured on the band’s 2001 album The Director’s Cut). Fan footage captured the performance, which went off without a hitch as the band nailed the intricate loud-soft dynamics.

Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins have revealed their new band Nighttime Boogie Association, with the drummers unveiling the side project’s first two tracks, “Long in the Tooth” and “The Path We’re On.”
As drummers in three of the biggest rock bands of the past few decades, Cameron and Hawkins became friends over the years, with the two eventually collaborating shortly after participating in the Chris Cornell tribute concert in January 2019.
“Taylor and I are both songwriters in these pretty big, popular bands,” Cameron tells Rolling Stone.

The Melvins’ Buzz Osborne has shared a sprawling new song, “Delayed Clarity,” from his upcoming album as King Buzzo with Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. The record, Gift of Sacrifice, is out August 14th via Ipecac Recordings.
The track opens with a long instrumental intro, as a simple acoustic guitar strum drifts above an atmospheric hum and the periodic footsteps of Dunn’s bass. The song begins to open up as King Buzzo’s vocals enter the track alongside jagged strings, both of which guide “Delayed Clarity” to strange but mesmerizing places.

After fronting the Melvins for more than 30 years and helping create grunge (despite his conflicted feelings on the genre), singer-guitarist Buzz Osborne released his first solo album in 2014. King Buzzo’s This Machine Kills Artists featured heavy acoustic riffs and droney grooves and proved the musical pioneer is still hungry to find new sounds. More than five years later, Osborne has announced his second solo LP.
King Buzzo’s Gift of Sacrifice is out May 15, with an extensive tour behind it. The nine-song album sees Osborne joined by Mr. Bungle bass player Trevor Dunn.

Melvins formed a few years before anyone used the word “grunge” as the name of a genre, but they embodied the term perfectly with their deep, sludgy riffs and left-of-center songwriting. Since 1984, they’ve released dozens of albums of uncompromising and sometimes experimental music, and constantly challenged rock norms. When we compiled our recent list of the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums, two of their standout LPs — 1991’s Bullhead and 1993’s Houdini — made the cut.
The band’s frontman, vocalist-guitarist Buzz Osborne, was surprised to hear the news, but not for the reason you may guess.

As the years go by, Dub Trio’s name feels less and less apt. While the group’s early work orbited around reggae, more recent releases have focused on crushing, riff-centric metal. “World of Inconvenience,” the lead single from the group’s new LP, The Shape of Dub to Come, draws on both styles to create a crafty, atmospheric hybrid.

Nirvana fans will be able to hear a previously unreleased song that Kurt Cobain wrote when the documentary, Montage of Heck, gets a widespread theatrical re-release on August 7th. Filmmaker Brett Morgen mixed in the tune – without re-editing what people saw in the film's HBO broadcast – though he would not say where in the movie it would play in an interview with Billboard. Netflix this week picked up David Michod’s War Machine, a new war comedy and satire starring Brad Pitt. The actor is the biggest yet to make the leap to Netflix’s streaming distribution, following the likes of Adam Sandler, Cary Fukunaga, the Duplass Brothers and more who have received multi-picture deals. How is Netflix changing the game and putting pressure on studios only interested in making larger, tentpole blockbusters? Plus, we run down several new trailers and have a lot of potential Wtf of the week contenders.

Last week, Melvins founder Buzz Osborne wrote a scathing review of the new documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck for The Talkhouse, criticizing the film as being "90 percent. . . bullshit." Now the musician has reinforced his stance on Brett Morgen's acclaimed project in an interview with Riff You, saying he's baffled that fans trust the movie's accuracy simply because of its association with family members, including Courtney Love.
"If they want to take [Love's] word for things, then go ahead," he said. "Do you feel better? Then everything she says is the golden rule.

The HBO documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is a personal favorite film of mine this year, and the #12 movie on our list of the best of 2015 so far. The Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne however, a personal friend of Cobain’s and Nirvana’s “before and after they were famous”, is not a fan.
Writing a review on The Talkhouse, where “Musicians Talk Music”, Osborne claimed Morgen’s film is “90 percent bullshit”, and that many of the stories and home movies used in the documentary, only add to the false myth making about Cobain. “That’s the one thing no one gets about Cobain,” Osborne writes. “He was a master of jerking your chain.”
One of the most compelling scenes in Morgen’s film involves is an animated sequence in which Cobain himself recites a story about taking advantage of a mentally retarded girl, then contemplating suicide. Osborne says Cobain’s own account never happened.

There are basically three versions of Kurt Cobain. The alternative rock superstar who lived brightly and burned hard in the public spotlight. The husband, father and friend that only those closest to him knew about. And the rocker presented in history books, documentaries and more, that tend to mix fact, fiction, and mythology. The latest document of the Nirvana frontman's life is "Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck," which has generally received rave reviews sing premiering at the Sundance Film Festival (here's our take). But one voice is speaking out directly against the film. Read More: Watch: First Trailer For Roc Doc 'Cobain: Montage Of Heck' Brings Teen Spirit The Melvins' Buzz Osborne has penned a piece for The Talkhouse, slamming the documentary for presenting a string of untruths and chastising director Brett Morgen and his team for failing to fact-check some of the tales told in the film. Here are...

With a career spanning thirty years, 21 albums, countless EPs and rare vinyl one-offs The Melvins are one of rock’s most prolific and underrated bands today. Their sound is an amalgam of punk attitude and their signature tar-paced riffs, not too mention almost everything else including the kitchen sink.
Since their inception in 1983 out of the same town that later birthed grunge godfathers Nirvana, they have inspired many bands from Tool, Mastodon and the aforementioned Nirvana, as well as the spawning of the Sludge Metal scene out of Louisiana in the late 80s and early 90s. Consisting of guitarist/vocalist Buzz Osborne, drummers Dale Crover and Coady Willis, and bassist Jared Warren the Melvins handle music with their own unique method of madness.
However with so many releases, it can be a bit hard to know where to start; some of their albums have a more experimental edge...

Melvins have announced an April 30 release for Everybody Loves Sausages, an album of covers of songs the band says have had a big influence on them. The tracks covered range from glam rock (Queen's “Best Friend”) to mod rock (The Jam's "Art School”), with plenty of hard rock and even Divine's "Female Trouble" thrown in for good measure. Everybody Loves Sausage also features several guest musicians like Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, as well as some tracks recorded by the “Melvins Lite” lineup of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and Trevor Dunn. Seminal grunge rockers The Melvins have been playing music for 29 years, and founding member and frontman Buzz Osborne is pushing 50. That isn’t stopping them from embarking on one of the most ambitious tours one can imagine. In fact, when they hit the road this fall, they’ll be going after the world record for the most ambitious tour ever, at least in the United States. Beginning with a Sept. 5 show in Anchorage, Alaska, the Melvins will attempt to play 51 shows in 51 days, with each show taking place in a different state and one in Washington D.C....

So, to get things started. This isn’t really very much of a review, I mean it is a review, it’s just not very much of one. I’m just one man, just one birthday celebratory weekend man. Not all the bands were seen, so not all the bands are reviewed. What I’m offering you instead is a feel for the festival, a take on my time there and the highs and lows of all that I witnessed.
Friday
It’s finally come around, Friday 25th of May. One train journey from the valleys to Cardiff, a second from Cardiff to Paddington. The sun shining, something fierce. Off at Paddington, hustle and bustle, impersonal and impolite. Welcome to London. Two tube trips, thankfully pulled off successfully and punctually down to the kindness of just one stranger. Guest house check in. Unpack. Ten minute taxi to ‘Ally Pally’.
One Slayer T Shirt.

You can feel the difference in the air let alone atmosphere as you walk in. Outside an uncharacteristically (though it’s starting to get to be) glorious March day is settling into a beautiful night, Venus visibly hanging from the Cheshire Cat smile of the moon. Inside the converted boat that is Theklar, as you delve into its depths and step into where the stage is, the contrast of the cool evening air and the thick humid sweatbox behind the cabin door is impressive.
As we enter Pianos Become the Teeth have started their set, having completely missed openers Apologies, I Have None due to venturing from the valleys to Bristol and the ridiculous decision on the time keeping of this event. We didn’t catch them but they’re definitely worth looking into if you like punk rock passionately aggressive but melodic and song based.

“I can’t believe it’s been 20 years.” I’ve heard this phrase uttered again and again by my peers when the subject of 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s landmark album “Nevermind” comes up in conversation. It’s usually followed by something to the effect of: “Man, we are old.”
Indeed, it’s depressing to think that it’s been a full two decades since I first played that Dgc Records cassette sampler,...

'Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses' opens Saturday in Seattle.

Seattle — It's fitting that on Monday morning, the inside of the "Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses" exhibit at the Experience Music Project in this Northwestern music mecca looked much like the band's music sounded: messy, splintered into 1,000 pieces, all over the place, yet somehow meticulously together and beautifully chaotic.
Museum workers inside this gleaming temple to the enduring influence of the city and region's musical heritage were in a mad scramble to get the first-of-its-kind exhibition of Nirvana artifacts into shape for Saturday's opening. Glass display cases with spots destined to feature one-of-a-kind treasures stood empty, while others were already fitted with touchstone effects. Among them were the iconic green sweater worn by late singer Kurt Cobain in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video,...

Over the next few days, MTV's Newsroom will be featuring items from the upcoming Experience Music Project special exhibit, "Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses," which opens at the Seattle museum on Saturday (April 16). Today's artifacts include Kurt Cobain's "The New American Gothic" painting and a letter sent to Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic about Cobain's early musical promise. The commentary on these objects are provided by exhibit curator Jacob McMurray.
"New American Gothic"
"This is Kurt Cobain's 'The New American Gothic,' a painting that he made in 1984 when he was in high school. One of the things that I think is really exciting about this is ... we know Kurt Cobain for his music, but he was a really talented artist as well. He created art throughout his career and in fact he came up with all the album cover ideas for Nevermind and In Utero and created the album art for Incesticide.

Can you see this bill in the making? The Melvins have Big Business. Now Clutch, Fireball Ministry, Cky and Fu Manchu have a stake in the sludge rock supergroup The Company Band. As the Melvins have recently toured a number of times under both themselves and Big Business on the same gig, you can picture a tag-team tour with any of the aforementioned home base groups bringing along The Company Band for a joint road haunt with Buzz Osborne and his drone posse. Assuredly it would need to be tagged The Corporate Takeover Tour…
