20 Best Female Superhero Movies
Image
It's no secret that male superheroes dominate the box office. However, there are exceptional female characters who are well worth some solo screen time. It may have taken a bit of time, but female superhero flicks have had major success with audiences, and luckily, there are still more to come.

Despite male superheroes like Superman and Spider-Man hogging the spotlight for some time now, several female superhero movies out there deserve more attention, such as Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Whether movies are led by a female character or a female character has an especially prominent role, they've met increased success and have developed loyal fanbases.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on December 17, 2024: Female superhero movies are thankfully becoming more popular thanks to recent initiatives in the MCU and the Dcu. With female-led films like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Thunderbolts* on the way, take a look at some of their best predecessors so far.

‘Secret Level’ Review: An IP Branding Exercise
Image
The aims of the animated anthology Secret Level, whose 15 shorts are based on video and tabletop games, are clear enough: As production company Blur Studio puts it on their website, “Secret Level is our love letter to gaming.” But despite the tangible earnestness of that claim, the series fails to shake off the cynicism of its commercial function and blinkered politics. Beneath flashes of beauty and fits of inspiration lies an elaborate branding exercise.

Secret Level features a handful of shorts that conjure impressive moods. The bleak industrial landscapes in “Armored Core: Asset Management” all but subsume the episode’s protagonist (Keanu Reeves)—and the formidable mech he pilots—conveying the extent of his alienation and the stakes of his mission; the economical “Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear” spares us unnecessary dialogue, setting its space marines loose with sweltering kineticism; and the martial arts revenge tale of...

Every Scarlett Johansson Sci-Fi Movie, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Scarlett Johansson shines in sci-fi roles with exceptional commitment to performing. Legendary directors brought out Johansson's talent in science fiction films. Despite mixed reception, Johansson impressed in Eight Legged Freaks, Ghost in the Shell, Lucy, The Island, and Under the Skin.

Scarlett Johansson has made a name for herself as one of the most sought-after actors working today, and several of her greatest performances were in science-fiction movies. Johansson has taken up sci-fi roles since early in her career, such as in the little-known creature feature Eight Legged Freaks, right up to more recent releases like the controversial manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell. Across all these roles, Johansson delivered the same exceptional commitment to performing that she has shown throughout her varied career in Hollywood.

The best Scarlett Johansson movies included work with legendary directors, and her science fiction offers were no different. With fantastic performances in movies by filmmakers such as Jonathan Glazer,...

Watch VFX Artist Freak Out While Roasting 2000s Cult Horror Comedy’s CGI Spiders
Image
One VFX artist freaks out while roasting the CGI spiders in Eight Legged Freaks. The horror comedy premiered in 2002 and follows residents of Prosperity, Arizona, who find that various spiders have become exposed to toxic chemicals, causing them to grow in size. Despite mixed reactions, the film has developed a strong fanbase over the years. It also features a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson and David Arquette, among others.

During Corridor Crew's recent video, VFX artists looked at scenes from Eight Legged Freaks and shared their reactions to the CGI used. In one sequence involving a bike chase, they poked fun at the animation, but added that some of the shots were well-made. When it came to his actual fear of spiders though, Wren appeared uneasy at the mall scene, where they crawled through a hole in the exterior and attacked one of the gates. Check out their responses in the video below,...

Groundhog Day Producer Recalls Tense Shoot With Bill Murray & Harold Ramis
Image
While still considered a classic today, Groundhog Day producer Trevor Albert recalls the tense shoot with star Bill Murray and co-writer/director Harold Ramis. The 1983 film centered on Phil Connors, a cynical TV weatherman becoming fed up with his life who finds himself stuck in a time loop on February 2 while covering the eponymous celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Co-starring Andie MacDowell, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray and Rick Overton, Groundhog Day scored widespread acclaim upon its release for its mix of wholesome themes and darker humor, with Murray and Tobolowsky's performances in particular garnering largely positive reviews.

In honor of the film's 30th anniversary, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Trevor Albert to discuss the legacy of the fantasy comedy Groundhog Day. While looking back at the production of the classic film, the producer recalled the tense shooting environment between Murray and Ramis, which ultimately led to the disintegration of their longstanding creative partnership and friendship.

Willow TV Review
Image
Plot: The Nelwyn sorcerer returns, years after rescuing the infant empress Elora Danan, to lead a group of misfit heroes on a harrowing rescue mission through a world beyond imagination.

Review: Of all the sequels and continuations that I have wanted, few ranks as high on my list as Willow. As an eight-year-old, I saw Willow on the big screen based purely on being from the imagination of George Lucas. I was unprepared for the sword and sorcery and dark fantasy about to unfold on a scale I had not seen on the big screen before. Ron Howard’s epic direction, James Horner’s immortal score, and the performances of Warwick Davis, Joanne Whalley, and Val Kilmer had me absolutely blown away. Like Star Wars, for over twenty years I have been stuck with rumors of a possible sequel and only a trilogy of novels to take me back to the story of Willow,...

How Willow Show Addresses Val Kilmer's Madmartigan Absence Explained
Image
Willow showrunner, Jonathan Kasdan, recently explained how the upcoming Disney+ sequel series addresses Madmartigan's absence. Val Kilmer starred as the charming warrior in the original 1988 Ron Howard movie of the same name. Freed by Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), Madmartigan joins the Nelwyn aspiring sorcerer on his quest to return the mysterious baby, Elora Danan, back to her people. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, Kilmer was unable to travel to the show's on-location set and will unfortunately not reprise his role in the show. However, Kasdan has previously stated that Madmartigan will be a part of Willow in some way.

Speaking at a recent press conference (via Syfy), Kasdan discussed how the Disney+ Willow series addresses Madmartigan's absence. The sequel show finds Queen Sorsha's (Joanne Whalley) son, Airk (Dempsey Bryk), kidnaped by evil forces. In an attempt to rescue him, Airk's sister, Princess Kit Tanthalos (Ruby Cruz) assembles a small team of...

Why Willow Sequel Show Had to Be Made, According to Showrunner
Image
Willow showrunner Johnathan Kasdan recently discussed why the sequel television series had to be made. The upcoming Disney+ show will be a sequel to Ron Howard's 1988 cult fantasy film of the same name. Starring Warwick Davis as the titular character, a Nelwyn dwarf who aspired to be a powerful sorcerer, the diminutive sorcerer embarks on a journey to deliver the mysterious baby Elora Danan back to her people after she washes ashore near a Nelwyn village. However, the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) believes the child to be the one destined to bring about her destruction and thus seeks to destroy her.

October 2020 saw the Willow television series announced with Davis returning to the starring role. Also returning after 34 years is Joanne Whalley as Sorsha as well as Kevin Pollack and Rick Overton as the brownies partners, Rool and Franjean. As a result of Covid-19 restrictions during shooting, Val Kilmer...

Willow Trailer Sees Warwick Davis' Hero With A Flamethrower
Image
Warwick Davis' Nelwyn sorcerer Willow Ufgood faces down foes with a flamethrower in a new trailer for Disney+ and Lucasfilm's upcoming fantasy series, Willow. The series is a sequel to Ron Howard's 1988 dark fantasy movie, reuniting audiences with Davis' character. The first Willow teaser trailer was released during Star Wars Celebration 2022, with the series confirmed to premiere on Disney+ on November 30.

Returning audiences to the fantasy realm of the Western Continent, Willow will revisit Davis' sorcerer Willow Ufgood long after the events of the original film. The actor returns to the role after 34 years alongside Joanne Whalley, Kevin Pollack, and Rick Overton, while Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel, and Dempsey Bryk join as a new party of adventurers that Willow must guide in a quest against the forces of darkness. Willow Teaser: If You Don't Die, One Day You May Truly Live
Image
While Devery Jacobs has been doing a spectacular job on FX and Hulu's "Reservation Dogs," which is currently preparing their third season, she will no longer be the only Elora Danan on modern television in a month's time. Soon, Disney+ will bring fans of Ron Howard and George Lucas' 1988 film "Willow" back to the planet of Andowyne and the mystical kingdoms found there. Ahead of the sequel series' premiere, the House of Mouse has released an action-packed promo to tease the next adventure of the beloved Nelwyn sorcerer.

More than 30 years after the original film, Warwick Davis reprises the role of Willow Ufgood in a new epic fantasy quest to save the world. And just as he did in his initial tale while he was only an upstart fledgling sorcerer, it would seem that an older and wiser Willow, along with a new band of friends, needs to insure...

Andor & Willow: new trailers for the long-awaited shows debut at D23
Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Billy Barty, Warwick Davis, Kevin Pollak, Kate Greenfield, Ruth Greenfield, Jean Marsh, Rick Overton, and Pat Roach in Willow (1988)
Lucasfilm has some pretty exciting content hitting Disney Plus this fall, with the D23 Convention offering us the final trailer for Andor, as well as a first-look trailer for the upcoming Willow sequel series!

The first season of the two-season Disney+ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel, Andor, hits the service on September 21st, and the final trailer was unveiled for the packed audience at this year’s D23 in Anaheim. The trailer, which strikes a notably grittier tone than some of the others, with its sparse version of the familiar Star Wars fanfare, foreshadows Andor’s eventual fate, as seen in Rogue One. Stellan Skarsgård’s Luther Rael warns Andor that he’ll eventually die fighting for the Rebellion. The series seems to center around the character finally accepting his ultimate fate, which comes as a part of fighting for something bigger than himself.

As previously revealed, the...

Robin Williams in Robin's Wish (2020)
Robin’s Wish Review: A Somber Portrait of Robin Williams’ Final Years
Robin Williams in Robin's Wish (2020)
When his brain was firing on all comedic cylinders—on stage performing standup or improvising in front of the camera—Robin Williams described an experience akin to being possessed. “When it works, it’s great—and when it doesn’t, it’s painful,” he said, solemnly reflecting on his ireplicable comedic genius. Those observations, taken from an old television interview, make up the prologue to Robin’s Wish, a lean, intimate and slightly incomplete documentary about Williams’ final years and months. They foreshadow the devastating cranial spiral at the heart of the comedian’s tragic ending.

Undoubtedly, Williams’ death by suicide on Aug. 11, 2014, came as a global surprise. Rampant media reports erroneously suggested substance abuse or depression as leading causes, all-encompassing issues perhaps attributed to his recently diagnosed case of Parkinson’s disease. But once examiners conducted a full autopsy, they found Williams had suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder called Lewy body dementia,...

Robin’s Wish Trailer Walks Through Robin Williams’ Final Days
Image
Six years ago this week was the tragic passing of comedy legend Robin Williams. A new documentary is now arriving to shed some light on his final days and the struggles he faced. Robin’s Wish, directed by Tylor Norwood (The United States of Detroit), sets out to detail the actor’s private battle with Lewy Body Dementia and the effect it had on his family, friends, and legions of fans who idolized the peerless performer. The trailer of the film hints at both the public and private life of the star, and how he remained positive and steadfast even as he succumbed to his illness.

Rising to prominence in the television show Mork & Mindy and his stand up specials, Williams then made a prominent career in film, starring in such acclaimed movies as Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, and his Oscar-winning turn in Good Will Hunting,...

Robin's Wish Trailer Tracks the Final Days of Comedy Legend Robin Williams
Image
Vertical Entertainment has released a new trailer for Robin's Wish. The documentary comes from director Tylor Norwood and will take a look at Robin Williams' final days before the beloved actor and comedian passed away at the age of 63 in 2014. The movie has a specific focus as it looks to set the record straight on what Williams was going through in the time before his death.

The trailer opens up with Robin Williams discussing the human brain, with moments of him performing over the years peppered in. Attention then shifts to his passing and the wave of media speculation that followed. Medical experts, as well as those closest to Williams, then discuss what his state was in those final days and the medical condition that was ravaging his body. It looks to be both devastating and inspiring.

Robin's Wish Tells the powerful true story of actor/comedian Robin Williams' final days.

Ron Howard at an event for Return to Mayberry (1986)
Willow Star Says He’s Down To Return For The Sequel
Ron Howard at an event for Return to Mayberry (1986)
“Magic is the bloodstream of the universe. Forget all you know, or think you know. All that you require is your intuition.”

If you remember those wise words of wisdom from the leader of the Nelwyn village, High Aldwin, chances are you’ve got a big ol’ soft spot for Ron Howard’s 1988 high fantasy classic, Willow. And to be honest, you’re not the only one there. Seriously, Willow rules, right?

As you may already know, a long gestating sequel TV series recently entered pre-production at Lucasfilm and is rumoured to be coming exclusively to Disney Plus sometime in the future. So far, we know that Warwick Davis is confirmed to be reprising his role as the eponymous farmer-turned-sorcerer, Willow Ufgood. We also know that Solo: A Star Wars Story scribe, Jonathan Kasdan, is penning the first draft of the script. However, beyond that, details remain scarce regarding the much anticipated project.

SAG-AFTRA Candidate Matthew Modine Mixes Comedy and Politics During Fundraiser
Comedy and industry politics mixed Tuesday night at The Hollywood Improv, site of a fundraiser for SAG-AFTRA candidate Matthew Modine and his Membership First slate.

“He looks like Hal Holbrook,” Tom Arnold joked. “He’s aged 100 years.”

Modine is challenging incumbent SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris and three other candidates for the top elected post at the 160,000-member performers union. With two more weeks of campaigning before voting concludes on Aug. 28, the funds raised are earmarked for mailings to members.

Modine noted he’s been so busy that he’s lacked the time to see a dentist about a missing tooth. “Running for office isn’t what I expected,” he said before taking the stage.

Lisa Ann Walter hosted with comedy provided by Arnold, Rick Overton, Cathy Ladman, Julie Goldman, Vinny Fasline, Candice Thompson, and Steve Byrne.

Class of 88: “I Hate Trolls” – The Not-So-Hidden Horror in Willow
While there is an abundance of films out there that feature halflings forced into a fight against an all-consuming evil, about 95% of them were directed by Peter Jackson. But today, I want to pay homage to a film directed by Richie Cunningham (aka Ron Howard), produced by George Lucas, and predating The Lord of the Rings movies by over a decade. Call it sacrilege if you must, but Ron Howard’s Willow holds a place nearer and dearer to my heart than anything set in Middle-earth. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some hobbits, but I was introduced to the Nelwyn clan at five years old. And at that age, when you fall for a movie, you fall hard.

For those who aren’t familiar, Willow centers on farmer/would-be sorcerer Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis). When he happens upon Elora Danan, an infant of the Daikini clan (aka...

In a time of great social strife and growing inequality and public outcry, it’s no wonder Peter Joseph's work has gained more and more prominence in the counter-culture each year. Love him or hate him, Joseph continues to challenge the “zeitgeist”, leading the charge towards a new society. Art is his weapon… and the thousands of dedicated fans don’t hurt either.

Peter Joseph is a producer who created the Zeitgeist Film Trilogy, a series of films critical of society and culture. These works exploded online starting in 2007 with millions of views and can now be found in major media outlets such as Netflix. His third film, Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, had the largest grassroots, non-profit theatrical release in history, with almost 350 screenings in 60 countries in 25 languages. While I may not agree with everything in his films,...

Pauly Shore Documentary Acquired By Showtime
Just Pauly
Exclusive: Showtime has picked up Pauly Shore’s revealing road documentary Pauly Shore Stands Alone and slated it to air December 4. The feature-length film directed by and starring Shore tracks the popular ’90s actor and comedian as he embarks on a stand-up tour across the Midwest while grappling with aging, fading fame and his relationship with his mother, Comedy Store founder Mitzi Shore, who has Parkinson’s. Unlike his 2003 directing debut Pauly Shore Is Dead, the new documentary peels back the curtain on the raw, more serious side of Shore’s life on the road. (Watch the trailer above.)

“A lot of these people don’t know that ‘Son-In-Law’ grew up among comics like Sam Kinison,” Shore told me from his latest stand-up stop in Orlando. “The tour was booked, and I was going through a peculiar time. I was happy on the road as opposed to being home,...

The Tripper and Contact High
Music festivals have never appealed to me. Especially the ones that involve camping in the dead of summer. The bands that are booked for festivals either don’t register or elicit a chuckle. Being around hundreds to thousands of people for that long sounds like one of the ten Chambers of Hell not mentioned in Big Trouble in Little China. Not to mention chronic swamp ass for days.

Six friends are headed to the Free Love Festival nestled deep in the Red Wood forest. Samantha (Jamie King) is hoping to have a good time and put her psycho right wing ex-boyfriend, and bad acid trip behind her. Samantha is excited to spend the time Not everyone is thrilled about the annual freak show. While the Mayor (Rick Overton) is eager for the revenue to fill the town coffers, Sheriff Buzz Hall (Thomas Jane) smells a rat. And they don’t...

Watch: Michael Urie and Randy Harrison in the “Such Good People” Trailer
Sassy back-talking thieves, faux-new-age witticisms, snarky realty agents, and overly-ambitious homosexual couples: Such Good People has it all. With an endless list of celebrity guest stars and an adorably spunky main cast, Such Good People is an upcoming comedy about a cat-and-mouse hunt for buttloads of cash. The indie flick will be debuting at the Majestic Crest in Los Angeles on July 7th.

The film stars Michael Urie (of Ugly Betty fame) and Randy Harrison (best known for his role on Queer as Folk) in what is being touted as the first post-marriage-equality comedy. The veritably endless supporting cast includes: Scott Wolf (Party of Five, Perception), Ana Ortiz (Devious Maids, Ugly Betty), Carrie Wiita (Super Fun Night), Rick Overton (Groundhog Day), Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Cabin in the Woods), musician and activist Lance Bass, Alec Mapa (Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, Switched at Birth), Drew Droege (Sassy Pants,...

Film Review: ‘A Haunted House 2’ Spoofs Better Than the Original
Chicago – The parody industry that the Wayans comedy machine has generated has provided big laughs and big box office for years. In 2013, Marlon Wayans launched another series, with “A Haunted House.” Faster than the fastest green light, that success led to ‘A Haunted House 2.’

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Moving to a personal note, I absolutely despised the first film, mostly because I felt that (writer) Wayans relied on tired gags and a strange, misogynistic attitude toward women in that film. But it’s nice to report that “A Haunted House 2” was much better, the gags were sharper (and weirder) and the supporting cast was stronger. While the anything-for-a-laugh pacing that Wayans practices will never get a Mark Twain Award, “A Haunted House 2” is bizarre spoof – especially of last year’s horror epic “The Conjuring” – that effectively elicits some guffaws for a night at the movies.

The film begins at the end of the last film,...

Interview: Marlon Wayans Brings the Funny to ‘A Haunted House 2’
Chicago – Marlon Wayans will do practically anything for a laugh, and that is to the audience’s advantage in the sequel to last year’s smash comedy, “A Haunted House 2.” Joining him for the second go around is hot comic Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and the reliable Affion Crockett, who is reprising his role as Cousin Ray Ray.

‘A Haunted House 2’ was given the green light after the success of last year’s “A Haunted House.” Marlon Wayans – with his writing partner Rick Alvarez – has formulated another spoof regarding the latest horror films, in this case mostly from last year’s “The Conjuring.” Wayans, who is also part of the Wayans Brothers comedy family, leaves no hilarious stone unturned as he sends up all of the weird elements of that film, and his on-screen supporting cast brings great improvisation and comic timing to the mix.

Gabriel Iglesias and Marlon Wayans...

New Who Review: The Crimson Horror
Gated communities are usually met with some suspicion and mistrust – in this case it’s rightly founded. Something is wrong in Sweetville, and The Doctor is red in the face about it. A bunch of friends reappear to help combat…

The Crimson Horror

by Mark Gatiss

Directed by Saul Metzstein

People are turning up dead in the canal in Victorian Yorkshire, their bodies in varied states of petrifaction and their skin a lobster red. Madame Vastra and Jenny are asked to investigate, and when they realize that The Doctor is somehow involved, they hurry to investigate. A woman is establishing her own ark on dry land, planning to survive the next torrent, not of rain, but of poison.

Mark Gatiss balances comedy and horror with a deft hand, being given the reins on the investigating Silurian and her companions. This may be the closest we ever get to a completely solo Vastra and Jenny adventure,...

Willow Blu-ray Review
It's been 25 years since the diminutive title hero of Ron Howard's Willow first saved the world from an evil queen; now you can relive the swords-and-sorcery epic on DVD and Blu-ray for the first time.  Warwick Davis (Harry Potter series) stars as an unlikely hero who must rescue an infant destined to overthrow a wicked queen before she can sacrifice the child.  Assisting him in his quest are the roguish swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), the impaired sorceress Fin Raziel (Patricia Hayes) and two comical creatures known as Brownies (Rick Overton, Kevin Pollak) who are even smaller than Willow himself.  Standing in their way are Princess Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) and the vicious General Kael (Pat Roach) who will do anything to deliver the infant to the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). While the remastered edition of Willow on Blu-ray is well worth the purchase, there are sufficient extras to please fans of all ages.

Casper Van Dien, Jason Mewes, Moises Arias, Matt Shively, Blake Freeman, and Ashley A. Thomas in Noobz (2012)
Title: Noobz Director: Blake Freeman Starring: Jason Mewes, Blake Freeman, Matt Shively, Zelda Williams, Moises Arias, Jon Gries, Richard Speight Jr., Darly Craig, Lin Shaye, Rick Overton, Casper Van Dien, Mindy Sterling, Bill Bellamy, Adam Sessler An across-the-board comedic misfire that lamely tries to hitch its trailer to the $17-billion-a-year videogaming industry, “Noobz” trades entirely in familiar clichés, and seems to regard its mere existence as a triumph to be shared by all. A wearying stinker unredeemed by a handful of brave, game, small supporting turns, multi-hyphenate Blake Freeman’s film is kind of like a cross between “Road Trip,” “Empire Records,” “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” and the modern-day videogame comedy that Kevin [ Read More ]
