The Stress Is Killing Me Review: Yoga Mats and Burnt Casseroles
Image
The Stress Is Killing Me unfolds under a blazing New Mexico sky, where eight former classmates converge in a sunlit mansion that feels both liberating and confining. From the first moments, the film lays bare its fascination with unfulfilled ambitions: a lawyer trading her tailor‑made suits for yoga poses, a restaurateur fumbling with pots and pans, a physician awkwardly wielding a paintbrush. Director Tom Carroll stages each experiment as a vignette of yearning, framing the group’s laughter against the vast desert beyond their windows.

There’s a pulse to these gatherings—a rhythm set by jaunty guitar riffs and the cast’s easy camaraderie—that shifts whenever regret surfaces. Sue and Todd’s polite hosting rituals fracture as old resentments seep in, exposing the fine line between playful role‑play and genuine crisis. In one sequence, the camera drifts between rooms as each friend grapples with the mismatch between fantasy and skill,...

The Stress Is Killing Me (2024)
The Stress is Killing Me (2025) Movie Review: Nostalgia-dipped mid-life crisis comedy is loosely bound and unfunny
The Stress Is Killing Me (2024)
Tom Carroll’s “The Stress is Killing Me” stems from a great idea. I mean, all of us have re-evaluated our lives at some point, imagining what it would be like if we had taken a career path that we truly wanted to take when we were young. So, when Carroll offers his characters another chance at life – even if it is for a brief period of time, you’d expect things to be light, breezy, and fun. And while to some extent they are, the writer/director’s failure to capitalize on that premise cannot be forgiven.

A lot of it depends on how the narrative is held together. At first, we are introduced to Kiki (Carly Christopher) – a lawyer stressfully driving down with her friend Marcie (Lisa Lucas) to their University’s 20-year reunion. The hot-shot lawyer is anxious because she will be meeting her college boyfriend Jason...

Paralympics 2024: How Networks In The U.S. & UK Want Their Coverage To Leave A Legacy
Image
In Shoreditch’s uber-trendy Electric Light Station several weeks back, some of the UK’s biggest disabled stars gathered to usher in Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympics, and there was fire in their bellies.

The evening featured talks and appearances from the likes of wheelchair basketball star-turned presenter Ade Adepitan, Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis and The Last Leg host Adam Hills, all of whom will play a part in Channel 4’s coverage when the games kick off next Wednesday. Titled ‘Considering What?’, the network’s Paralympics ad was also unveiled, which challenges the notion that disabled athletes are often dismissed with epithets such as “she’s good… for someone in a wheelchair,” when in fact they face the same battle against gravity, friction and time as able-bodied Olympians. Onlookers were inspired by the ad.

In keeping with the name, the atmosphere was electric and the drumbeat...

‘Aew: Dynamite’ Review (Feb 15th 2023)
Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast live from the Sames Auto Arena in Laredo, Texas. We’ve got Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Taz on commentary so let’s get into the review!

Match #1: Orange Cassidy, The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens & Max Caster) & Daddy Ass def. Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh & Sonjay Dutt The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Jay Lethal and Anthony Bowens began for their respective teams. Bowens used a snap mare into a roll up on Lethal for a near fall. Caster tagged in and he and Bowens used tandem offense on Lethal. Double J tagged in but Caster took him down with arm drags and then a dropkick. Satnam Singh tagged in and Orange Cassidy wanted a piece of him. Sonjay came in instead and then Daddy Ass tagged in. Sonjay quickly tagged out to Jarrett. The newly crowned...

Aew News: Why Keith Lee Hasn't Been On Dynamite Or Rampage Lately
Image
Keith Lee was last seen on Aew television on December 21, when his former tag team partner, Swerve Strickland, turned on him and formed the Mogul Affiliates. The new faction has been picking up steam as of late. Strickland continues to win matches on Dynamite and Rampage, while Parker Boudreaux and the newly coined Trench look plenty menacing. Swerve seems to have taken issue with Dustin Rhodes, and it'll be interesting to see where that possible feud ends up going. However, Keith Lee's absence has been long enough that some fans may be wondering if he's alright.

In the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave the following update about the 38-year-old. "Keith Lee is out of action because they are selling the cinder block spot with Swerve Strickland, so at some point he should be back for revenge." The spot in question fame on the previously mentioned December 21 Dynamite.

‘Aew: Dynamite’ Review (Feb 1st 2023)
Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast live from the Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. We’ve got Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Taz on commentary so let’s get into the review!

Match #1: Jon Moxley def. “Hangman” Adam Page The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Moxley jumped “Hangman” as Moxley was making his entrance. Moxley hurled Adam Page into the barricade. Moxley delivered a flying sledge as he jumped off the barricade onto Hangman. Adam Page turned the tables, delivering a big boot to Moxley as they brawled amongst the fans. Moxley applied the figure four on the floors and flipped off Adam Page. Moxley hit Page in the ribs with a steel chair. Page slung the chair at Moxley’s head. Page suplexed Moxley onto the chair on the arena floor. Page caught Moxley flush in the forehead. Moxley, dazed, began to bleed from the forehead.

Jon Moxley & Hangman Adam Page Threatening To Steal Aew Revolution PPV
Image
Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page didn't get to have the feud they wanted to as 2022 came to a close, but the two have more than made up for it on Aew television lately. So much so that their program has overtaken Mjf vs. Bryan Danielson as the most interesting in the company, and they could be on the road to stealing the spotlight at Revolution. Moxley and Hangman aren't scheduled for that pay-per-view yet, but it feels like that's the way this thing is going following their barn burner to open the February 1 episode of Dynamite.

That was the third meeting between Jon and Adam, with the first fight ending early due to Page inadvertently getting knocked out in Cincinnati, Ohio. That Dynamite main event needed to be stopped, and Hangman was stretchered out. He picked up a concussion in that match, shelving him as 2022 wrapped up. However, they've...

‘Aew Rampage’ Review (Jan 27th 2023)
Image
It’s Monday so you know what that means, it’s time for our weekly review of Aew: Rampage! This week’s show features Chris Jericho, Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Jim Ross on commentary. Now let’s get to the review…

Match #1: “Hangman” Adam Page def. Wheeler Yuta

My Thoughts: This was a hard-hitting, well-fought match that at once showed that Adam Page is really ready for his rematch against Jon Moxley And that Wheeler Yuta has actually learnt from his time with the Blackpool Combat Club – Yuta kept his high-flying moves in play but backed them up with the more “strong style” work of Moxley and Danielson. Which actually meant that this was probably the best tune-up match Page could’ve had going into this week’s Dynamite!

My Score: 4 out of 5 Match #2: Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh & Jay Lethal def. Best Friends (Trent Barretta and Chuck Taylor...

Aew Stuck The Landing For The Young Bucks Vs. Top Flight On Dynamite
Image
When it comes to All Elite Wrestling's booking of The Young Bucks, things don't always go the way that they maybe should. Matt and Nick Jackson are Executive Vice Presidents for the company and are clearly tight with owner and co-founder Tony Khan. Fair or not, this creates a perception that if The Young Bucks don't want to lose, then they don't lose. Some fans felt they spent the summer ducking a white-hot Ftr, going so far as having Adam Cole turn on them so that they could work babyface. Professional wrestling is always full of this kind of scuttlebutt, but The Bucks are in that position because of their executive titles and because of their history with Khan.

Despite all that, The Young Bucks 100 percent did the right thing on Dynamite. Their match against Top Flight went on second, and it would have been easy for fans to overlook the bout.

Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast live from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, California. We’ve got Excalibur, Tony Schiavone and Taz on commentary so let’s get into the review!

Match #1: “Hangman” Adam Page def. Jon Moxley The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

Both men slugged it out, with Mox rocking Page with three consecutive shots. Hangman fired back with a big boot in the corner. Page ducked a lariat from Moxley but Page’s backdrop was countered by Moxley. Mox dug his nails into Page’s back and then superplexed Adam Page onto the mat. Mox went for an armbar but Hangman Page rolled into it, attempting a pinning predicament. Moxley sent Page flying with a German Suplex, and then a second release German Suplex. Hangman Page rallied back with an overhead throw to Moxley. Hangman was looking for...

Backstage News On Cm Punk Wanting To Return And "Do Business" With Aew
Image
Less than a week into 2023, All Elite Wrestling still can't escape the ghost of Cm Punk. The 44-year-old was last seen representing the company following the All Out pay-per-view. His scorched Earth comments about Hangman Adam Page and Aew's EVPs—Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks—led to an alleged backstage altercation that left Tony Khan without his biggest stars for several weeks. There were conflicting reports about legal action being taken, but September 4, 2022, was one of the darkest days in company history. Aew has been on a hot streak as of late, so it makes sense that Punk's name would pop back up in the dirt sheets.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer dropped the following tidbit: "Things have heated up regarding the Dax Harwood podcast and C.M. Punk seemingly pushing that he wants to come back and do business." The podcast in question...

Rush wrapped the TV camera cord around Orange’s neck and began to pull back. Preston Vance planted Chuck Taylor with a spinebuster. The Blackpool Combat Club came out next and entered the ring like a wrecking ball! Kip Sabian stomped on Orange Cassidy in the corner. Dark Order entered the fray next! Wheeler Yuta Shoots On Blackpool Combat Club's Future Sans William Regal
Image
All Elite Wrestling has confirmed that William Regal will be heading back to WWE, leaving the Blackpool Combat Club without their leader. Regal brought the group together following a match between Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson at Revolution in 2022. Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli joined, later on, rounding out the faction. The group is rarely seen on screen together these days, but they all still represent the Bcc in action with their hard-hitting in-ring style. Without Regal in place, some Aew fans may wonder what's next for the Blackpool Combat Club. Yuta recently opened up about the future of the team.

Speaking on Steve Fall's Ten Count on YouTube, Yuta said the following about how the group will move forward without Regal: "I think that there's definitely a regrouping. There's definitely got to be a rebuilding. But I think that it's time for whatever version of what the Blackpool Combat Club is gonna' be.

Aew's Tony Khan Explains TBS Champion Jade Cargill's Star Power
Image
All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan addresses the star power of Jade Cargill, which explains her continued reign as the first and only TBS Champion. Cargill is undefeated with a 42-0 record since debuting in Aew in March 2021. At the Aew Full Gear PPV, Jade defeated Nyla Rose to retain the title, and she took back the TBS Championship belt that Rose stole and took possession of weeks earlier, claiming to be the "TBS Champion."

Screen Rant took part in the Roh Final Battle media briefing with Tony Khan, who answered our question about Jade Cargill's undefeated run as TBS Champion. While Khan didn't indicate his future plans for Cargill, he did shed light on how he and Aew value Jade as the TBS Champion:

Tony Khan: Jade is such a great champion for us, and she has so much star power. She has that crossover star appeal. When Jade...

Former WWE Star Says William Regal "Immediately" Regretted Joining Aew
Image
Several reports have indicated that William Regal is done with WWE, and one source says that the veteran regretted signing on with All Elite Wrestling almost as soon as he arrived. The leader of the Blackpool Combat Club betrayed Jon Moxley at the Full Gear pay-per-view, aiding Mjf by sliding him brass knuckles during the match's finish. Regal had two televised segments following that PPV but was blindsided by The Salt Of The Earth last week on Dynamite. Following the broadcast, speculation began that William and Aew were through, which is allegedly the case.

During a recent episode of The Wrestling Outlaws on YouTube, former WWE star and Tna World Champion EC3 weighed in on Regal's time with Tony Khan's wrestling promotion. "When [Regal] went over to Aew, the word was he said, 'I immediately regret this decision.' There was very much a maturity issue with the management." EC3...

Jon Moxley & Hangman Adam Page Can't Overshadow Mjf's Next Feud
Image
Hangman Adam Page returned on the November 30 episode of All Elite Wrestling's Dynamite show, immediately reigniting his feud with Jon Moxley. This angle makes a ton of sense, as Aew's ace inadvertently injured Hangman during their match on October 18 for the World Championship. Regardless of who won that bout in Cincinnati, the odds are reasonable that they would always drop the title to Mjf at Full Gear. Moxley did the j-o-b at the most recent pay-per-view, and Aew should be The Salt of the Earth's yard, at least for a little bit. As such, Moxley vs. Page should be taking up space in the mid-card, giving Dynamite and possibly Rampage more depth than they've had in quite some time.

Having Moxley and Hangman battle on Friday nights is a great way to shift some focus back to that broadcast. The audience has been dwindling since Rampage lost the Cm Punk Show angle.

Aew Should Go All In On Mjf vs. Bryan Danielson After William Regal Attack
Image
All Elite Wrestling might have finally found a way to make crowds boo Mjf, as the World Champion delivered a cheap shot to William Regal on the November 30 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite. A week after Bryan Danielson begged Jon Moxley to spare the 54-year-old Regal from physical ramifications for interfering at Full Gear, Mjf turned around and cold-cocked William in the head. Both commentary and The American Dragon spoke about neck issues, and brain bleeds for Regal, making it a real possibility that this could be the last Aew fans see of him for quite some time. And possibly ever, given his long history with Triple H and WWE and that he was stretchered out of the ring.

In Aew, however, this could set up a monstrous feud between Danielson and Mjf. It'd be a big deal for multiple reasons. Tony Khan wouldn't be getting The Salt of the...

Mjf Can Now Be The Villain He's Always Wanted To Be In Aew
Image
In the lead-up to Full Gear, it seemed like Aew had turned Mjf face. He had been getting massive pops since returning at All Out, which could have led to Tony Khan making him the top good guy in the company. The Salt Of The Earth would have never been a happy-to-be-here face, but All Elite Wrestling could have banked on a Stone Cold Steve Austin-type anti-authority figure working with modern wrestling audiences. Time and time again, Mjf tried to push the boundaries of the TV-14 rating to get booed. And repeatedly, fans rebuked his efforts and cheered for him anyway. That's part of what made William Regal's double cross of Jon Moxley so sweet. Friedman has been telling audiences all along that he can't be trusted. It's a valuable lesson for Aew fans: Don't get in their way when a wrestler is telling you who they are.

Mjf Swerve At Full Gear Would Break Aew's Worst 2022 Trend
Image
Aew Full Gear will feature a main event pitting arguably the two biggest stars in the company—Mjf and Jon Moxley—against one another for the World Championship. The two wrestlers have done a fantastic job building up to the match. Moxley hasn't allowed Mjf to overpower him on the mic and has dropped a few pipe bombs over the last few weeks. It's a fight fans have been clamoring to see since The Salt of the Earth returned at All Out and won a poker chip that gave him the right to challenge for the title anytime, and anywhere he wanted.

This chip set up a Money In The Bank-type situation for Mjf and opened the door for Aew to inject tremendous intrigue into every one of Moxley's title defenses. Instead of going that route, Tony Khan turned Friedman face, which was done in an admittedly compelling manner. There...

WWE News: Kevin Owens Seen Limping After House Show Match In Wisconsin
Image
Kevin Owens has not wrestled a match on WWE television since September 30. Still, he's remained active on the house show circuit, primarily working against Theory or in a tag team with Johnny Gargano. Main Event was in Wisconsin over the weekend, and The Prize Fighter once again had a bout against Theory. Unfortunately, fans in attendance took to social media after the show, and several said that it appeared Kevin Owens injured himself during the fight.

Reddit user u/grey9802 wrote the following on r/SquaredCircle: "Kevin Owens planted his right foot & seemed to have hurt his knee in a match tonight against Austin Theory. The match wrapped up quickly & he limped on his way to the back with help from the referee." Several Twitter users also witnessed this. Fan @MattBlaustein gave the following account on the platform: "As the person who broke the Kevin Owens news, felt I should...

Eddie Kingston Reveals Why There's So Much Backstage Drama In Aew
Image
Aew has had plenty of backstage drama over the last several months, and Eddie Kingston has a theory about why. The Mad King has had his fair share of issues behind the curtain. Earlier this summer, he quietly served a suspension after allegedly pie-facing Sammy Guevara after he went off the rails during a promo that was actually cut from All Elite Wrestling television. Kingston took to Twitter to admit that he was wrong in that particular situation, but that was far from an isolated incident. That's not even the most recent example of Guevara getting into it with another wrestler backstage.

Speaking on the Eat Sleep Podcast Repeat show, Kingston revealed why he believes All Elite Wrestling continues to have these kinds of issues. "It's real simple. You've got a lot of people back there with egos. Some people believe other people don't deserve to be in Aew. Other...

Pros & Cons Of Aew Possibly Turning Mjf Face At Full Gear
Image
Some Aew fans seem concerned about the prospect of Mjf turning heel, but those worries, while reasonable, will ultimately prove to be unfounded. During the October 18 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite, The Salt Of The Earth cut one of the best promos of his career. For almost 15 minutes, Friedman and William Regal captivated the Cincinnati crowd, making time stand still and changing the air inside Heritage Bank Arena in a way that only a big-time star can. Some of the most prominent wrestling personalities on Twitter called it one of the top segments of the year, and it's tough to argue with that notion.

It was the only time during the two-hour live broadcast that everyone in attendance was on their feet (except for the scary injury situation with Hangman Adam Page). The exchange had a big-league feel, with Mjf making good on his claim of being a "generational talent.

‘Aew: Dark’ Review (June 14th 2022)
Image
Another episode of Aew: Dark, which this week was apparently taped around an episode of Rampage so we get a decent crowd and bigger names on the card. Let’s join Taz and Excalibur, commentators for Dark as usual, and see what this week’s Eight matches have in store… Those match counts are getting bigger and bigger the further we get from Double or Nothing.

Match #1: Qt Marshall def. Alan Angels

My Thoughts: Wtf?! We closed this week’s Elevation with Dark Order versus The Factory and open this week’s Dark with Alan Angels versus Qt Marshall… Running out of ideas much? I’m really starting to wonder what the hell the plan is, if there is a plan, with these recurring Dark Order/The Factory matches? Feuding on YouTube shows but not referencing them outside of YouTube. Hell, I’m expecting to see both teams start...

Film Review: The Paper Tigers (2020) by Quoc Bao Tran
Image
Martial arts movies remain contentious in Asian American cinema. On one hand, the likes of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan have made major breakthroughs in the US; thanks to their kung fu movies from the 20th century, Hollywood realized that Asians too are excellent leads. On the other hand, however, the same films have molded into an unbreakable ceiling for Asian American actors. Stereotypes of sagely shifu and nunchuck-wielding warriors have since been well baked-in, the most recent “Mortal Kombat” (2021) notwithstanding.

Quoc Bao Tran’s “The Paper Tigers” (2020) enters the fray with a charming spin on an age-old trope. This production too had initially faced funding resistance. Critics denounced “yet another” Asian American martial arts movie, clamoring for other forms of representation. Upon viewing, however, these arguments seem redundant, if not ironic. “The Paper Tigers” is anything but. While it plays with the usual tropes of kung fu comedy, the...

Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Ron Yuan, and Alain Uy in The Paper Tigers (2020)
Kung Fu Friends Reunite Again Years Later in 'The Paper Tigers' Trailer
Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Ron Yuan, and Alain Uy in The Paper Tigers (2020)
"When the hands cross... all will be revealed." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a martial arts action comedy titled The Paper Tigers, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Quoc Bao Tran. This premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, then stopped by numerous other festivals in the fall including the Busan, Hawaii, and Asian American Film Festival. Three Kung Fu prodigies have grown into washed-up, middle-aged men, now one kick away from pulling their hamstrings. But when their master is murdered, they must juggle their dead-end jobs, dad duties, and old grudges to avenge his death. The film stars Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Matthew Page, Andy Le, and Yuji Okumoto. This already looks like an indie cult classic!! Seems like a fun throwback and a clever Kung Fu dark comedy. Here's the official US trailer (+ posters) for Quoc Bao Tran's The Paper Tigers,...

Fantasia 2020: ‘The Paper Tigers’ Review
Image
Stars: Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, Joziah Lagonoy, Matthew Page, Jae Suh Park, Ken Quitugua, Roger Yuan | Written and Directed by Bao Tran

Essentially The Paper Tigers is a feel-good movie that uses martial arts as a vehicle for a story about finding oneself, re-discovering not only friendships of youth but also one’s self-esteem. In this case self-esteem that comes with martial arts – the quite strength, the feeling a of power that comes from the discipline that one needs to fully learn and be in control of your skills.

As teens, friends Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. Loyal disciples to their Sifu, Master Cheung (Roger Yuan), they trained together, fought together and planned to become the next great martial arts masters. Life, as they say, has other plans, and when Danny left to take part in a tournament in Japan,...

Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita in The Karate Kid (1984)
Fantasia Review: The Paper Tigers Brings Kung Fu Comedy to a Dramatic Set-up
Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita in The Karate Kid (1984)
Like the warring Japanese dojos depicted throughout the Karate Kid franchise, a growing disconnect exists between those who wish to learn a fighting style as a means of physical and emotional growth and those who simply seek the ability to punish their adversaries without mercy. It’s respect and honor versus strength and superiority—something even the most devout and sacred of Chinese Kung Fu masters like Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) can’t always instill in their pupils. No matter how much they strive to trust the younger generation’s capacity to protect what they’ve learned as a tool, the allure of morphing it into a weapon for profit is often too much to ignore. It’s why he retired after his three disciples left. The disappointment was too much to bear.

So we meet him at the start of Quoc Bao Tran’s The Paper Tigers in an...
