The Twin Review: The Terror of the Man in the Mirror
Image
The film opens on a scene of domestic tranquility so perfectly composed it feels fragile, a prelude to rupture. We meet Nicholas and Charlie, a couple whose life with their cherubic son, Jacob, is rendered in warm, soft-focus tones that all but scream “before.”

The narrative architecture is classical, almost cruel, in its establishment of an idyll it has no intention of maintaining. The inevitable break comes not with a slow tear but a violent shatter: a household accident, swift and unceremonious, erases the child from the frame.

This sudden void sends Nicholas into a tailspin of guilt so profound that he follows it with a desperate, failed attempt to exit his own life. The film’s palette shifts instantly from warm to clinical, its tone to a low, persistent hum of dread.

As Nicholas returns from institutional care to the now-cavernous family home, the camera lingers on empty doorways and silent rooms,...

He begins experiencing terrifying visions of a shadowy figure that looks like himself. 10 Gangster Movies That Defined The Genre
Image
A staple of Hollywood since the earliest days of cinema, gangster crime movies have formed an intrinsic part of popular culture. Several of the genre's most beloved and influential outings have been acclaimed by fans and critics alike, with many of the finest examples lauded as some of the best movies of all time. From the early days of iconic entries like The Public Enemy all the way to more modern standouts like The Departed, gangster flicks have been captivating audiences with their thrilling stories and nuanced examinations of criminality.

Along the way, cinema has witnessed several gangster movies that have defined the genre in their own unique way. Establishing what works best for this brand of film through bold experimentation, many of the best gangster movies bravely took a chance on what was an unproven central premise or creative direction at the time, only to be rewarded in the...

10 Popular Gangster Movies With Major Inaccuracies
Image
Gangster films have been a staple of entertainment for over a century. The conflict between the law and the lawless, jam-packed with drama and violence, has kept people flocking to the theaters for excessive entertainment. Gangster films date back to 1906 with a Humphrey Bogart film called The Black Hand and have cumulatively raked in billions at the box office, demonstrating their popularity within the film world. Crime has always been a favorite genre due to the historical realism portrayed on screen.

However, many gangster films are labeled as "true stories" and the content on screen is erroneous. Historical inaccuracies often occur in film, but it happens even more frequently in some of the most popular gangster films. Between classics like Scarface and recent entries like The Irishman, plenty of great gangster movies stray from fact.

10 Great Performances From Actors Who Came Out Of Retirement For One More Role
Image
For a wide variety of reasons, many beloved actors eventually retire from Hollywood and shift their focus toward something else. However, not every actor can stay away forever. Sometimes, a role is so enticing that it is enough to bring an actor out of retirement for one last great performance. These returns to the big screen can be incredibly exciting for audiences, particularly for fans who have spent years hoping to see their favorite star back in theaters once again.

It is also important to note that some of these performances didn't end up being the "last hurrahs" that they were expected to be. Sometimes, a single role is enough to rekindle an actor's passion for their craft, leading them to launch a whole new era of their career. Others, of course, merely wanted to perform one last time before returning to retirement. Whether they decided to continue their career...

10 Great TV Dramas That Have No Bad Episodes
Image
With the television landscape going through many changes since its inception, the current consensus of viewers praises the medium as a great form of entertainment and an opportunity to deliver rich dramatic storytelling. As TV shows began to craft intricate narratives and tackle more complex themes, many series have since come along and offered audiences terrific drama, iconic characters and memorable pop culture moments.

Given the convoluted and stressful nature of making a TV show, it is nothing short of difficult when a good show gets made; however, it is almost impossible for a great series to be made and also garner a loyal fanbase that has sung its praises since its release. Moreover, a great show doesnt just elevate the medium to be a prestige form of art, it also delivers some of the best episodic stories in all of fiction and boasts a perfect run of narrative execution.

‘The Fetch’ Teaser: Irish Folklore Comes to Life in a Directorial Debut About the Things That Haunt Us Long After Death
Image
In Irish folklore and literature dating back to the 1500s, writers from the island nation have written about mythical beings known as “Fetches” that haunt people whose days are numbered. According to legend, Fetches take on the physical form of the humans they visit — and if your own creepy doppelganger visits you in the evening, it means your death is imminent. But if they visit you in the morning, you can prepare yourself for a long life ahead of you.

That mythology is set to come to life in “The Fetch,” a new horror movie debuting at the Austin Film Festival that promises to fuse Irish folklore with modern day scares. According to an official synopsis, the film follows a grieving father who finds himself haunted by the Fetch as he mourns the death of his only son.

“The Fetch” marks the feature directorial debut of J.C. Doler, who has previously released six short films.

10 Best Serial Killer Movies Based On True Stories
Image
The following article discusses details of real-life murder cases.

Movies have always reflected people's morbid fascination with serial killers, with some movies focusing on real-life killers rather than fictional characters. Even some of the most iconic fictional movie serial killers have taken inspiration from real murderers, like Norman Bates in Psycho and Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs. There are relatively few on-screen killers who are directly drawn from real life, however.

Depicting real serial killers on film has always been controversial. Some feel as though portraying murderers in this way affords them a level of prestige which they don't deserve, and they can often come across as sympathetic if a movie isn't careful. In either case, this can come across as insensitive to the families of the victims, who are too often excluded from the narrative. Only the best serial killer movies can explore criminal psychology without crossing the line.

Quick Links No Man of God Is Based On True Events Doctor Strange Co-Writer, C. Robert Cargill, Penned the Script Why No Man of God is a Brilliant Crime Thriller

It may surprise some that Scott Derrickson, writer, and director of the first Doctor Strange film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is also responsible for directing such horror films as Sinister and The Black Phone. Perhaps even more surprising, however, is that C. Robert Cargill, Derrickson's co-writer on all three films, is also responsible for a psychological crime drama about the infamous serial killer, Ted Bundy. There have been several different films and television series over the years that have each given their portrayal of Bundy and his crimes, but the film No Man of God has been hailed for being one of the most accurate depictions of the man and his final days. One of the bigger things that...

Frightfest 2021: ‘No Man of God’ Review
Image
Stars: Elijah Wood, Luke Kirby, Robert Patrick, Aleksa Palladino, Christian Clemenson | Written by Kit Lesser | Directed by Amber Sealey

Written by Kit Lesser and directed by Amber Sealey (No Light and No Land Anywhere), No Man of God takes the horrifying true crime case of Ted Bundy and contorts the lens in order to look at Bundy’s relationship with FBI analyst and profiler Bill Hagenmaier during his final years as a death row inmate.

It’s an intriguing concept and one I was very excited to sit down and watch. Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) plays Hagenmaier and Bundy is played by Luke Kirby, whom I personally know from his run in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Lenny Bruce. The majority of this movie is a character play between two men, a conversation, a back and forth. Seeing Kirby and Wood act their socks off is a joyous thing,...

Stephen Daldry’s ‘Together’ In Theaters; Halsey On Imax, ‘Stripes’ Turns 40 – Specialty Preview
Image
Together, the lockdown drama from Bleecker Street, opens on 250 screens this weekend in a specialty market treading water and with little visibility on box office amid daily Covid headlines.

The trend continues of specialty films going wider faster and narrowing the window from theatrical to VOD in a nod to the chunk of its audience, mainly older, that feels more comfortable watching at home. The market is looking to a stream of fall product ahead of awards season, hoping the virus is more contained by then. Some good news offset the march of the Delta Variant this week as the Fda granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine – shots in arms being key to an accelerated theatrical revival.

Together is directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Dennis Kelly. It stars James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a couple forced to...

‘No Man of God’ Film Review: Ted Bundy Death-Row Drama Has Quiet Power
Ted Bundy
Real evil will always be a tantalizing go-to for storytellers, and in the case of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, it’s meant at least nine at-bats across film and television for handsome, ambitious actors (from ‘80s-era heartthrob Mark Harmon to post-Disney Zac Efron) to twist looks, charisma and pathology into a portrait of chill, guy-next-door monstrosity.

Could Luke Kirby’s turn, as the death-row Bundy, be the best yet? Even if director Amber Sealey’s crisp, compelling indie docudrama “No Man of God” is the second Bundy film this year alone, not counting documentaries? Pardon the competitive shading to that question, but in the Hannibal Lecter era, screen madmen have mostly been muscle-flexing attempts at nerve-jangling one-upmanship, so it’s a comparison most films welcome.

And Bundy, convicted of murdering three women but certainly guilty of killing, raping and kidnapping countless more, has become a true-crime cottage industry, to...

‘No Man of God’ Review: Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby Find New Terror in Ted Bundy’s Oft-Told Story
Image
Shocking revelations aren’t in short supply in Amber Sealey’s fact-based “No Man of God,” but at least one remains hard to shake, both for the audience and the onscreen character at the receiving end of the information. During one of their earliest meetings, serial killer Ted Bundy (Luke Kirby) tells FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier (Elijah Wood) the closest thing that might amount to an ethos for the murderer and rapist: “normal people kill people.” For Hagmaier, dispatched to interview Bundy as part of the FBI’s then-fledgling criminal profiling division, it’s the sort of admission that seems destined to derail him, both personally and professionally.

Instead, in Sealey’s “No Man of God,” it serves as a touchstone, an impossible-to-kick idea that torments both Bill and Ted, a concept that holds together the film even when it threatens to shake loose. While both Ted Bundy’s hideous...

Nelson Mandela
Robin Lord Taylor Talks Alternate Universes, Shifting Timelines and The Mandela Effect [Exclusive]
Nelson Mandela
The Mandela Effect is a term often used to describe the phenomenon of shared false memories. Some consider it a conspiracy theory, others believe it to be nothing more than an Internet meme. While there are a strong few who know, without a doubt, that our current plain of existence is constantly shifting, as we experience the merging of various alternate realities. Is it all psychological? Or is this really happening to us, with ripples tearing through the fabric of reality, causing changes, burps and hiccups both big and small?

Fiona Broome coined the term in 2009, and it references the phenomenon where many people remember Nelson Mandela's death before it actually ever happened, with many claiming he died in prison. Not years later as a free man. These types of shared false memories have stretched into many other aspects, raging from movies, to geology to human history. Things aren't quite as they seem.

What is Real in Trailer for Mind-Bending Sci-Fi 'The Mandela Effect'
"Either we're sliding between parallel realities... or it's a simulation, and it's glitching out." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for a trippy, indie sci-fi thriller titled The Mandela Effect, the latest made by filmmaker David Guy Levy. For those unfamiliar, the "Mandela Effect" is the theory that people collectively misremember something (the best example being: The Berenstain Bears). The odd feeling of being wrong makes some start to question reality or believe in alternate timelines. This plays with that concept and takes it even further, throwing in some The Matrix and Source Code vibes. The film follows a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself. The film stars Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, Robin Lord Taylor, Madeleine McGraw, and Clarke Peters.

The Mandela Effect Trailer #2 Threatens to Split the Universe Apart
Charlie Hofheimer in The Mandela Effect (2019)
What is The Mandela Effect? Some believe it is a real-world phenomenon that many can't explain, while others simply call it misremembered facts. But how can so many people remember the same exact thing worng, or that never happened? That's the idea behind the new thriller The Mandela Effect, which explores this so-called conspiracy against the backdrop of a family man who has recently lost his child.

As we can see in this latest trailer for The Mandela Effect, one man's daughter seems trapped between parallel universes. In this reality she has died, but in a different plain of existence, she has survived. Or has she? It's possible that her dad is just going mad, his insanity fueled by the loss of his loved one. Grief can push some people over the edge.

In the first trailer for The Mandela Effect, we witnessed the start of madness. Now, we see...

Charlie Hofheimer in The Mandela Effect (2019)
What is The Mandela Effect? Some believe the universe has shifted. Others call it the collective misremembering of any given event. Now, someone has made a movie about this fascinating phenomenon. And today we have the first trailer featuring Gotham star Robin Taylor.

In the Mandela Effect, a man becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself.

‘The Loudest Voice’ Trailer: The Toxic Origins of Fox News, as Told By Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts
Russell Crowe in The Loudest Voice (2019)
TV news organizations don’t seem like the healthiest environments in the world. As “The Loudest Voice,” the upcoming limited series from Showtime looks to prove, Fox News was certainly no exception.

Russell Crowe stars in the seven-part series, which follows the rise and reign of Roger Ailes as head of Fox News, bringing it from a fledgling cable network to a gigantic force in modern American politics. This latest look at the series also shows how part of the Ailes legacy is the culture of harassment that existed during his tenure and became one of the biggest topics of conversation during his departure from the network in the summer of 2016.

“The Loudest Voice” also includes a number of prominent on- and off-screen figures at Fox News, including Gretchen Carlson (played here by Naomi Watts). A longtime on-air anchor at the network, Carlson’s claims against Ailes were a significant...

Showtime Unveils First Look Trailer, Premiere Date For Roger Ailes Miniseries (Watch)
Russell Crowe
Russell Crowe’s portrayal of the controversial Fox News chief Roger Ailes will be coming to Showtime on Sunday, June 30, the network has announced.

Showtime has also released an unnerving first look trailer for the miniseries, in which Crowe’s Ailes takes over Fox News and starts bending it to his will.

“Here in America, television news is king,” the character says. “We’re gonna give them a vision of the world the way they want it to be…we’re way past politics, it’s war.”

The trailer more than hints at the sexual harassment allegations which brought about Ailes’ downfall, as the character is seen touching Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, played by Naomi Watts, who looks extremely uncomfortable with his actions.

The series is based on Gabriel Sherman’s bestselling book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” and tells the story of Ailes and his rise and fall at Fox News.

The series focuses primarily on the past decade in which Ailes arguably became the Republican Party’s de facto leader, while flashing back to defining events in Ailes’ life, including an initial meeting with Richard Nixon on the set of The Mike Douglas Show that gave birth to Ailes’ political career and the sexual harassment accusations and settlements that brought his Fox News reign to an end.
