Ed Sheeran Drops Rock Song with Help from Dave Grohl and John Mayer
Image
Ed Sheeran is back with “Drive” a new rock song featuring Dave Grohl on drums and John Mayer on guitar.

The new song is included on the soundtrack for F1, the new Formula 1 racing film starring Brad Pitt that arrives in theaters next Friday, June 27th. Atop a bluesy, ’70s-inspired riff, Sheeran offers a handful of racing and car-centric lyrics in the raspiest, grittiest vocal tone he can muster. “Ha-la-lay-la/ We can ride/ Four wheels you and I/ Gotta get out of here,” he sings in the anthemic chorus, later unleashing a soulful, escalating command after each refrain: “Petal down and driiiiiiiiive.”

“Drive” was produced by Blake Slatkin as well as Mayer. In addition to Mayer and Grohl playing on the track, Sheeran recruited fellow Foo Fighters member Rami Jaffee on keys and Pino Palladino on bass. Sheeran originally previewed the song via his Instagram Story last month, advertising it...

Elton has always been one of music’s most avid team players — his last album was the all-star Lockdown Sessions (which included a tune with Carlile), his most recent mega-hit was a remix with Dua Lipa,...

“On my tombstone,...

‘The Book of Clarence’ Filmmaker Jeymes Samuel Responds to Claims of Blasphemy: “I Like the Smoke”
Image
Jeymes Samuel can take the heat when it comes to commentary about his work. And he’s expecting plenty to follow the release of his latest film, The Book of Clarence, a biblical epic set for release on Jan. 12 about a man who, witnessing the rising popularity of Jesus the Messiah, attempts to cash in on that fame by performing fake miracles to get out of debt.

“People always see things the wrong way and they call it backlash,” says the director who also wrote and produced the film and its accompanying soundtrack, which arrives Friday along with the feature. “It’s conversation. I like the smoke. Let’s talk.”

Lakeith Stanfield stars in the lead role of Clarence, which reunites him with his The Harder They Fall co-star R J Cyler among a large ensemble cast that includes Omar Sy, Caleb McLaughlin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop and James McAvoy.

Drake

The bundle also includes an alternate version featuring Sweata, all via RCA Records.

This track is the first of new music to come since her live five-song EP, full of powerful recordings of songs from Yebba’s critically acclaimed, unbarred and honest debut album Dawn.

Beck Performs “Thinking About You” on Kimmel: Watch
Image
Beck was the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night, performing his new tearjerker “Thinking About You” with some help from Blake Mills and Pino Palladino.

With just the three guitarists on stage, Beck’s performance on Kimmel really put the emphasis on the sadness of his lyrics: “Wanna believe in something/ Don’t even have to be true/ Just thinking about you,” he sings, lines that we’ve speculated are about Beck’s ex-wife, with whom he recently split after 14 years together.

Beck has said before that, although he did initiate the divorce, the experience was “heartbreaking” for him. Considering this is one of the first times he’s played “Thinking About You” live in front of a crowd, it’s pretty impressive that he was able to keep his composure throughout the entire Kimmel bit. Maybe the sunglasses indoors were just a fashion statement, or maybe...

Erykah Badu Talks Her History With Late Jazz/ R&b Great Roy Hargrove, Whose Documentary She Executive-Produced (Exclusive)
Image
Erykah Badu, executive producer of the forthcoming documentary about late jazz and R&b trumpeter Roy Hargrove, wastes no time in elaborating on the influence her collaborator and high school classmate exerted on her life and career.

“It started with Roy,” says Badu, who first met Hargrove in 1985, when she was a freshman at Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. “Roy was the first person I met in high school: he in the music department and jazz band, me in dance right next door. We danced to that band’s versions of John Coltrane, Miles Davis. That helped me understand what jazz was, and how to interpret it. It was a subtle rebellion. Roy was already a legend as a sophomore — truth is,” she adds, “Roy was actually a legend starting in junior high.”

Hargrove would go on to legendary peaks in both R...

John Mayer Makes Eighties Slickness Seem Weirdly Heartfelt on ‘Sob Rock’
Image
No one is more aware of what people think about John Mayer than John Mayer himself. The title of his eighth studio album acknowledges past accusations of sad-boy mopery. The muted pastels of the throwback cover art, complete with a simulation of the “Nice Price” sticker that Columbia Records used to slap on its bargain LPs, dares you to call him a purveyor of slick, dated studio-rock.

Is this self-deprecating? A jab at critics? Either way, the self-consciousness of the packaging is notably absent from Mayer’s music itself. He...

Perfume Genius, a.k.a. Mike Hadreas, has dropped his new song “On the Floor.” The track is off the upcoming album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, out May 15th via Matador Records.

Directed by Hadreas himself, the song’s video features Hadreas topless, smoking a cigar. He dances around a field of dirt, rolling around on the ground and doing crunches on a stack of tires. “I pace, I run my mouth/I pray and wait,” he sings over a synth-pop beat. “I cross out his name on the page.

Song You Need to Know: Perfume Genius, ‘Describe’
Blake Mills
What might emptiness sound like? That’s what Mike Hadreas, who records as Perfume Genius, sought out with producer Blake Mills on “Describe,” his latest single.

The song takes on a simple premise: the narrator is struggling in the midst of a tough episode, asking a loved one to help render the world for them. Much like the way Jeff Tweedy sought to sonically manifest his recurring migraines on Wilco’s A Ghost is Born, Perfume Genius manifests mental darkness on record, its sludge-rock low-end and languid tempo occupied by unfiltered chaos.

Margo Price Cuts Down Critics on Defiant New Song ‘Stone Me’
Margo Price
“Call me a bitch, then call me baby/you don’t know me, you don’t own me,” sings Margo Price in the chorus of “Stone Me,” her first new music in two years. The Nashville country and soul singer debuted the song with a live performance on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.

Written by Price with husband and bandmate Jeremy Ivey, “Stone Me” finds Price shrugging off any slings and arrows that come her way. Attempt to sully her good name? Knock yourself out, she warns. “I won’t...

With a New Self-Titled Album, the Who Have Made Classic Rock Comfort Food
The first Who album in 13 years opens with a perfectly cynical Pete Townshend lyric: “I don’t care/I know you’re gonna hate this song.” But it’s kind of hard to hate something that feels so familiar. Roger Daltrey sings the lyric and the ones that follow, claiming the song isn’t “new” or “diverse,” with the same anger and conviction as the Who’s earliest music, recorded more than half a century ago, and the melody is almost identical to the opening “I don’t mind” of...

D'Angelo's Long Path to Black Messiah-dom Leads to Multiple Grammy Wins
D'Angelo at an event for Jackie Brown (1997)
For a while, it looked like D'Angelo was going to become R&B's Axl Rose. The parallels are easy to spot: Both individuals are massively talented perfectionists whose personal struggles threatened to drown long-awaited follow-ups to early successes. In Rose's case, that would be Chinese Democracy, a Guns N' Roses album so delayed it became a running joke ("We'll have democracy in China before we have Chinese Democracy," for example), and for D'Angelo, it was the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo, which was eventually released in Dec. 2014 as Black Messiah. On Monday, Black Messiah quickly earned two Grammy Awards - Best...

The Second Coming of D’Angelo
Image
D‘Angelo is a morning person, of sorts. When he’s working in the studio, as was often the case in the 14-year interregnum between 2000’s Voodoo and 2014’s Black Messiah, he quits his all-night recording sessions just in time to greet each day’s sunrise. “I’m definitely on the night shift,” he says, drawing deep on one of a series of Newport cigarettes, not long after midnight in the midtown Manhattan studio where he recorded much of Black Messiah. He’s wearing a denim shirt unbuttoned over a white undershirt,...

Watch D'Angelo Make Powerful Statement With 'SNL' Performance
D'Angelo at an event for Jackie Brown (1997)
In a season of stunning Saturday Night Live bookings like Chris Rock, Prince and Eddie Murphy, the biggest surprise yet was D'Angelo landing a musical guest spot, a performance that wasn't on anyone's radar just two months ago. The soul singer and his backing band the Vanguard hit the SNL stage to play a pair of tracks off their acclaimed Black Messiah.

While D'Angelo had been road-testing his Black Messiah songs in concert in recent years, SNL provided a chance to showcase the tracks to the greater public as well...

John Mayer Trio Reunites for First TV Performance in Five Years (Video)
John Mayer
As promised, John Mayer is back in the studio with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. The John Mayer Trio reunited for their first televised performance in five years, in a Late Night With Seth Meyers episode that aired Thursday. Story: John Mayer Receives UCLA Head and Neck Surgery Department Honors After Meyers interviewed Lena Dunham on the late night talk show, the blues rock trio jammed on Jj Cale's "After Midnight" -- which was appropriate in light of the Saturday Night Live alum's new time slot -- with jazz legends Chick Corea, Manolo Madrena and Wallace Roney. Mayer also confirmed on Twitter that Corea

Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks Review
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

It’s been a little over five years since the last release by Nine Inch Nails, but Hesitation Marks is well worth the wait. Now married, a father of two, and an Academy Award winning composer, Trent Reznor returns with not only a new album, but a new outlook on life. In between the release of 2008′s The Slip and now, Reznor found himself composing the score for David Fincher’s film The Social Network. During that time, he had announced that Nin was through touring and that he was stepping away from the music scene for a while. After scoring Tsn, he formed the band How To Destroy Angels with his wife Mariqueen Maandig, and collaborator Atticus Ross. The Htda project had Mariqueen at the forefront both on the album and via live shows and had a distinct sound that kept it separate from Nin.

Nine Inch Nails reveals track listing for 'Hesitation Marks'
Trent Reznor
Nine Inch Nails has revealed the track listing for “Hesitation Marks,” out Sept. 3. In addition to first single, “Came Back Haunted,” the rest of the titles hint at the sense of restless discontent (to put it mildly) the group is known for, including “The Eater of Dreams,” “Disappointed,” “All Time Low,” “Various Methods of Escape,” and “Black Noise.” Nine Inch Nails head Trent Reznor produced the album with his composing partner Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. Among the guests are Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, bassist Pino Palladino, and guitarist Adrian Belew, who dropped out of the band, according to Rolling...

D’Angelo Hits The Studio With Questlove To Record First Album In Over A Decade
By Zachary Swickey

R&B charmer D’Angelo is apparently ready to come out of hiding and is yet again attempting to record his much anticipated third album. The artist has been in a New York studio recording with some of his longtime collaborators: hip-hop’s hottest drummer and full-time stickman for The Roots, Questlove; producer/engineer Russell Elevado (Nikka Costa, Blackalicious); and bassist Pino Palladino, who also plucks away for John Mayer Trio among numerous other projects.

Through the power of Questlove’s Twitter account, we became aware of the sessions: “Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. Others are working on their 11 year followup. This of course being hour number one.”

Based on Quest’s comment, it appears that D’Angelo has scrapped any previously record material for the long gestating project, which he has supposedly been working on off and on for the past decade...

Who Drummer Zak Starkey Holds Down Super Bowl Halftime
The son of another famous drummer, Starkey has actually been working with the band since 1996.

Every classic-rock fan knows the titanic twosome that fronts the Who: singer Roger Daltrey and windmilling guitarist Pete Townshend. But as the only two original members left of the iconic British rock band, the duo front a group of backup players who are decidedly more anonymous than late madman drummer Keith Moon and steady-on bassist John Entwistle, who died in 2002 on the eve of one of the band's seemingly endless final tours.

One of the sidemen that stood out for many football fans watching the Super Bowl halftime extravaganza on Sunday was splashy drummer Zak Starkey, who kept the beat on a medley of the band's most beloved hits: "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley," "Who Are You?," "See Me,...

Pete & Roger: Who Are You?
The Who's upcoming tour is expected to garner the legendary band a cool $100 million, but getting Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey to travel and perform together is turning into a logistical night- mare.

One insider said, "There is a lot of tension and fighting going on right now. Roger is furious with Pete. Pete has been writing all this new material and wants to perform the new stuff, but Roger wants to stick with 'My Generation,' 'Won't Get Fooled Again,' 'Pinball Wizard' and other classics."

Townshend and Daltrey...
