This Forgotten George A. Romero Cult Classic Horror Is Getting a 4K Uhd Release
Image
If you thought that the only deadly simian that you would see on your screen this year was Osgood Perkins' adaptation of Stephen King's The Monkey, you thought wrong. Next month, a cult-classic movie by horror master George A. Romero (Night of the LivingDead) is getting the 4K Uhd treatment: Monkey Shines. The 1988 movie is often overshadowed by Romero's more famous movies, but this one earned a small cult status after an initial lukewarm reception. The special 2-disc edition will be released on June 3.

Monkey Shines tells the story of Allan (Jason Beghe), a man who suffers a terrible accident that makes him quadriplegic. After that, he is given a service monkey appointed to help him with daily tasks. The problem is that the adorable Ella suddenly starts to develop a fiercely aggressive behavior, putting the lives of several people at risk.

The horror movie was written by Romero himself,...

Matt LeBlanc's Best Sitcom Is Not Friends, But A Hidden Gem That Deserves Another Chance
Image
Even the biggest Joey Tribbiani haters in the world can't stake a believable claim that Matt LeBlanc isn't TV royalty. LeBlanc's status as a small-screen great is so respected that Kunal Nayyar even reached out to him for advice while working on "The Big Bang Theory," and why wouldn't it be? After all, 10 seasons of "Friends," two seasons of the quickly canceled spin-off "Joey," four seasons of "Man with a Plan," and another four as a "Top Gear" presenter have etched his affable presence into the eyeballs of viewers across the world.

However, even his well-known résumé includes the occasional hidden gem that's worth any fan's time -- and not just stuff like his role as Don West in the star-studded 1998 sci-fi adventure "Lost in Space" or his old recurring role as Vinnie Verducci on "Married with Children." Let's put it this way: What's the only series LeBlanc won a Golden Globe for?...

A 40-Year-Old Crime-Noir Film Roger Ebert Declared Perfect Gets a Free Streaming Home in April
Image
The 1985 crime thrillerTo Live and Die in L.A. may have only earned $17 million at the worldwide box office, but well-known film critic, the late Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, gave the movie, directed by William Friedkin, four out of four stars. The movie will stream for free on Tubi starting on April 1.

Although its box office take may seem low, To Live and Die in L.A. did turn a profit as its budget was just $6 million. The movie follows the story of two Secret Service agents who are given the task of arresting a counterfeiter. Currently, the film has an 88% critic score and a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

George A. Romero’s ‘Monkey Shines’ Deserves a Rewatch While You Wait for ‘The Monkey’
Image
When I first read the news that one of my favorite modern directors, Osgood Perkins, would be directing The Monkey, the article was accompanied by a familiar image: a toy monkey with a cracked-out face, banging two cymbals together. My brain immediately went to George A. Romero’s underappreciated 1988 film, Monkey Shines.

I also immediately assumed Monkey Shines was based on a King story—a natural assumption. What hasn’t King written at this point, after all? In reality, of course, Perkins/King’s The Monkey has absolutely nothing to do with Romero’s Monkey Shines. But while the two properties aren’t officially connected apart from their similar imagery – oddly enough, Perkins had to redesign the toy monkey from King’s story due to a Disney copyright! – they do have a few things in common. Both Monkey Shines and The Monkey feature bat-shit crazy stories full of dark humor,...

Chicago Pd's Cast's Best Non-One Chicago Roles
Image
Chicago Pd has featured an abundance of characters, and many of the actors and actresses who play them are familiar faces. Series mainstays and those with much briefer runs alike have typically starred in at least one other TV show or movie fans are likely to have seen. Some of them have careers dating back decades, while others are best known for more modern work.

By sheer coincidence, many actors involved with the franchise are well-known for featuring in fantasy, sci-fi, and horror works. The stars of Chicago Pd have had major roles in franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Arrowverse, and in movies like Monkey Shines. These performances are all excellent, and show the range of the long-running police procedural's cast.

William Friedkin in The Guardian (1990)
Wtf Happened to To Live and Die In L.A?
William Friedkin in The Guardian (1990)
When he died this summer, a lot of director William Friedkin’s movies got new life as film fans dug into this filmography. Looking over his body of work, one of the interesting things to note is that he directed four films that could justifiably be called masterpieces, but only two of them were successful. There was The French Connection and The Exorcist, both of which raked in huge box office and are considered classics. But, there were also two flops that he made that are just as good as those films, one of which is 1977’s Sorcerer, and the other is 1985’s Secret Service thriller To Live and Die in L.A., which we’re digging into in this episode of Wtf Happened to This Movie.

The film stars William Petersen (long before CSI) as a Secret Service agent after the counterfeiter who killed his partner. While that premise sounds old hat,...

TCM Honors William Friedkin With a Special Two Night Event
Image
TCM is honoring William Friedkin's career with a two-night event showcasing five of his best films, including The French Connection and The Exorcist. Friedkin had a successful Hollywood career, directing acclaimed films across various genres such as Sorcerer and Killer Joe. Hollywood mourned Friedkin's death and praised his genius and influence, with collaborators and actors from The Exorcist speaking highly of him.

Turner Classic Movies will celebrate the life and career of the late, great William Friedkin with a two-night event. TCM's tribute will showcase five films, the first three airing on Thursday, September 14, and the remaining two airing Sunday, November 26. September's event will feature The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., and The Boys in the Band; while November's event kicks off with the TCM premiere of Friedkin Uncut, a documentary about Friedkin's life and work, and concludes with The Exorcist.

To Live and Die in L.A. Is William Friedkin’s Most Underrated Masterpiece
Image
William Friedkin was an inherently well-informed filmmaker. He started out in television at age 18, directing live news reports and documentaries for WGN-tv in Chicago. He knew how to get to the bottom of any story, best frame the narrative to capture attention, and inform the viewer.

He brought that sense of assured knowledge to movies. There is never any doubt about the veracity of The French Connection (1971). The Exorcist (1973), meanwhile, invites the audience to medical diagnoses and a realistic portrayal of demonic possession. It is the emphasis on the medical that makes the demonic seem plausible. Similarly, To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) is an authentic movie about counterfeiting, and one which deserves to be as celebrated as his early ‘70s masterpieces.

A Step by Step Guide to Counterfeiting

The printing of bogus bills may not seem like an exciting basis for a crime thriller, but Friedkin progressively raises the...

William Friedkin Remembered: William Petersen Reflects on How His ‘To Live and Die in L.A.’ Director Changed His Life
Image
William Petersen was a theater actor from Chicago when William Friedkin changed the course of his life. In 1984, the Oscar-winning director tapped the then-unknown performer to play Richard Chance, a Secret Service agent willing to bend rules and break laws in order to capture a shadowy counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe) in “To Live and Die in L.A.” The crime thriller was a return to form for Friedkin, who had summited the heights of the movie business with “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” only to suffer a string of disappointments. Petersen and Friedkin would later collaborate on a Showtime remake of “12 Angry Men” and two episodes of “CSI.” Friedkin died on Aug. 7 at the age of 87, and Petersen shared his reflections on his “greatest mentor and most brilliant friend.”

I was doing “Streetcar Named Desire” at the Stratford Festival outside of Toronto, and Billy sent his casting director to watch me.

Hal Ashby in Bound for Glory (1976)
Review: William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A. on Kino Lorber 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Hal Ashby in Bound for Glory (1976)
When you think of 1980s action movies, visions of steroidal juggernauts like Schwarzenegger and Stallone are likely to spring to mind, but there was always another, if less numerous, stream running through their midst: gritty, downbeat, and cynical films typically helmed by New Hollywood stalwarts whose careers were in various stages of diminution. Among them were Hal Ashby’s strident, coke-fueled 8 Million Ways to Die, John Frankenheimer’s seamy extortion saga 52 Pickup, and William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A., a neon-hued noir reworking of the morally ambiguous cops-versus-criminals terrain he had staked out a decade earlier in The French Connection.

Like Friedkin’s earlier film, To Live and Die in L.A. cannily blends quasi-documentary procedural realism with an unpredictable modernist sensibility. The story is succinct in its pulpy purity: loose-cannon Secret Service agent Chance (William Petersen) vows to take down elusive counterfeiter Rick Masters (Willem Dafoe), no matter the cost,...

George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the more overlooked entries in the filmography of the late, great George A. Romero. The movie is the 1988 release Monkey Shines (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

Written and directed by Romero, Monkey Shines is based on a novel by Michael Stewart. The film has the following synopsis: What starts as an innocent attempt to have a specially trained monkey help a paralyzed man get a new lease on life turns into a hell of unleashed rage. Monkey Shines, is a chilling look at how one man’s inner fury is telepathically channeled through his beloved monkey which carries out his most devious thoughts.

Susan Blackwell, John Ellison Conlee, Jeremy Davidson, Stephen Kunken, Richard Masur, John Pankow, Kristine Sutherland, Finnerty Steeves, and Jack Lewars in Before/During/After (2020)
"I whipped up a kick ass divorce mix playlist for ya." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for Before/During/After, an indie drama written by and starring Finnerty Steeves. The film earned good festival buzz taking home Dances With Films' "Industry Choice Award", Greenpoint Film Festival's "Best of the Fest" award, San Diego's "Best Ensemble Cast" honor, Naples' "Programmers Choice Award", and an exclusive drive-in showing at the RiverRun Film Festival. This sharp-witted dramedy studies a middle-aged NYC theatre actress suddenly forced to figure out the kind of person she wants to portray in real life when her marriage comes to an end after she catches her husband cheating. In addition to Steeves, this also stars Jeremy Davidson, John Pankow, Kristine Sutherland, Richard Masur, Michael Emerson, and Deborah Rush. ‘Mad About You’ Revival: Banter, Bickering, and Boredom
Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser in Mad About You (1992)

To that duo, NBC added powerhouse hospital...

Be More Chill
2019 Broadway spring season preview of musicals: Which will be remembered by the Tony Awards?
Be More Chill
As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Be More Chill” (previews begin February 13; opens March 10)

In this musical adaptation of Ned Vizzini’s 2004 novel of the same name, Jeremy Heere is your average, nothing-special teenager at Middleborough High School in nothing-special New Jersey. That is, until the day he finds out about ‘The Squip.’ Thus begins a journey that pits Jeremy’s desire to be popular against his struggle to remain true to his authentic self.

With a book by Drama Desk nominee Joe Tracz and a score by Joe Iconis, this production is...

Class of 88: Monkey Shines: The Strange Case of Two Jekylls and a Killer Monkey
Monkey Shines finds George A. Romero in the somewhat unusual position of adapting someone else’s work. Brought onto the project after the dissolution of his partnership with producer Richard P. Rubinstein, Romero claims this was the only time he ever adapted someone else’s work besides Stephen King (though I’m unsure how The Crazies and Two Evil Eyes figure into his estimation). Perhaps it’s this circumstance that results in Monkey Shines being considered one of Romero’s lesser works. As the writer and director known for inventing the modern zombie and injecting strong sociopolitical messages into independent horror cinema, tackling what looks to be a scientific thriller à la Michael Crichton for his first major studio-backed film seems beneath his talents. Yet, I can’t imagine anyone else directing this film and achieving similarly successful results.

Monkey Shines tells the story of Allan Mann (Jason Beghe), an...

Paul Reiser on Reviving ‘Mad About You’: ‘There’s Still Comedy To Be Mined’
Paul Reiser at an event for His Way (2011)
For many years, Paul Reiser refused to even entertain the notion of revisiting his 1990s sitcom “Mad About You.” But clearly, he has come around: TVLine reported on Tuesday that Sony Pictures TV is developing a revival of the romantic comedy.

“Mad About You” was part of NBC’s successful “Must See TV” stable of sitcoms and ran for seven seasons, from 1992 to 1999. The comedy, which Reiser created with Danny Jacobson, starred Reiser and Helen Hunt as Paul and Jamie Buchman, a young couple living in New York. The decision to potentially revive “Mad About You” comes following NBC’s successful return of “Will & Grace” and ABC’s impending revisit of “Roseanne.” Other hit reboots have included “The X-Files,” “Full House” and “Gilmore Girls.”

“People were asking about bringing ‘Mad About You,’ and for years I said no, why would you?” Reiser told IndieWire in October. “Literally for 18 years I was adamant,...

‘Episodes’ Series Finale: Creators on Ending the Matt LeBlanc Comedy with a Heartfelt Meta Twist
Matt LeBlanc in Episodes (2011)
It’s official: There are no more “Episodes.”

David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik’s award-winning Showtime comedy came to a close Sunday night, and as sad as it is to say goodbye, the brilliantly meta Hollywood satire delivered an ideal ending. Both surprising and fitting, the final moments of “Episodes” came together in a way that felt inevitable only after it happened.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the “Episodes” Season 5 finale — the series finale — Episode 7, “Episode Seven.”]

After confronting Matt (Matt LeBlanc) over why he passed on the script they created together (kind of), Beverly (Tamsin Greig) and Sean (Stephen Mangan) came to terms with the cold hard truth: Their latest pilot wasn’t very good. So, in a burst of inspiration, Sean wrote a new pilot that everyone loved, including Matt. The three patched up their thorny fallout and committed to the new project, which turned out to be…

“Episodes!” That’s right. Completing the meta arc that began by casting Matt LeBlanc as Matt LeBlanc,...
