When Gillian Flynn's third novel, "Gone Girl," hit shelves, it absolutely blew up. And the 2014 movie adaptation from David Fincher was even bigger, turning Flynn into a name to be reckoned with almost overnight. The bestselling book about a woman who faked her own kidnapping was an astounding film debut that made it feel like anything Flynn touched would turn to gold. Though she would go on to write the screenplay to the criminally underrated Steve McQueen heist drama "Widows," the first big follow-up for Flynn after the massive success of "Gone Girl" was an adaptation of her second novel, "Dark Places," about a woman who tries to solve the decades-old murders of her entire family. "Dark Places" is a much more complicated novel than "Gone Girl," but with a screenplay and direction from the talented Gilles Paquet-Brenner and a seriously stacked cast, it seemed like the movie had a real shot to succeed.

Everyone loves a good whodunnit. After all, these types of murder mysteries have been all the rage since the mainstream popularity of the detective mystery genre in the 1900s, where the term was first used in a 1930 novel review. Genre authors like Agatha Christie, G.K. Chesterton, and Nicholas Blake (among many others) helped establish the conventional traits of a whodunnit, such as the clever placement of red herrings and the use of specific settings (like an island or mansion) to heighten the stakes.

Christie's oeuvre is a special one, and her whodunnit mysteries hold value and appeal to this day; one only has to look at the string of Kenneth Branagh-helmed adaptations, including the fairly recent "A Haunting in Venice," to see that adaptations are still being made. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. HBO has announced a new miniseries adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s underrated thriller novel Dark Places, and it’s something that Flynn’s fans have wanted for years. Flynn’s second published novel, Dark Places revolves around the sole survivor of a massacre in rural Kansas and the story deals with themes of the class divide and the Satanic panic that swept the U.S. in the 1980s. When it was published in 2009, Dark Places appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for two weeks in a row.

When Gillian Flynn novels hit the screen, it tends to result in something highly watchable. Take, for instance, David Fincher’s big-screen adaptation of Gone Girl, with its stellar casting of Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, or HBO’s adaptation of the ultra-dark Sharp Objects, anchored by the ace Amy Adams. Now, another of Flynn’s novels is being adapted into an HBO series – her Sharp Objects follow-up Dark Places.

The series will see Flynn serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner, working alongside Brett Johnson in all those capacities – while Guerrin Gardner will be co-creator and writer. The show is said to be in early development, so stay tuned for updates of it moving further into the pipeline. Gillian Flynn is returning to HBO following “Sharp Objects.”

The author will adapt her novel “Dark Places” into a HBO limited series, as IndieWire can confirm. Variety first reported the announcement.

Flynn, whose novel “Gone Girl” was adapted in an Oscar-nominated David Fincher film, will serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner with Brett Johnson (“Escape at Dannemora”). Guerrin Gardner is also credited as a co-creator and writer for “Dark Places.”

The 2009 novel follows Libby Day across decades as she revisits the death of her mother and two sisters amid an alleged Satanic killing spree in Kinnakee, Kansas in 1985. While Libby survived, she testified that her teenage brother Ben was the murderer.

12 year old Honor Kneafsey stars in the leading role of Josephine in a new feature film adaptation of Agatha Christie crime novel Crooked House, which has just started filming in London.

Honor (represented by A&J Management) has just filmed on Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop and is known to TV audiences for her roles in Our Zoo and Benidorm.

She will star alongside Max Irons, as private detective Charles Hayward who is invited to solve the gruesome murder of wealthy and ruthless tycoon Aristide Leonides, poisoned in his own bed. Nobody is above suspicion, including Sophia (played by Stefanie Martini, who has just filmed the role of Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect prequel Tennison) Hayward's client and former lover.

The cast also includes Terence Stamp as a chief inspector and Christina Hendricks, Glenn Close, and Gillian Anderson as members of the dead man’s household.

Hot on the heels of Gone Girl, David Fincher’s dementedly enjoyable Gillian Flynn adaptation, comes a second Flynn-based movie under the guidance of Gilles Paquet-Brenner. With it comes another stellar cast, Flynn’s built-in fanbase, and a morose story involving secret societies that obsess over (un)solved mysteries of the past – another home run you might assume, right?

Wrong. Dark Places doesn’t come across nearly as dark as Flynn’s book reads, and can’t hold a candle to the twisted insanity Fincher was able to find in the author’s work not even a year ago. Brenner’s deadly story feels watered down and slight when compared to the tone you’d imagine from Flynn’s novelization, and fails to create any drama worth a sadistic chill.

Everyone enjoys a brief opening paragraph, so why don't we spend it listing all the things that "Dark Places," from director Gilles Paquet-Brenner ("Sarah's Key"), gets right. Its cast is undoubtedly committed, particularly a convincingly grimy Charlize Theron, and an enjoyably off-the-leash Chloe Grace Moretz, though it feels like they signed on to different films, and continued under that misapprehension all the way through shooting. Christina Hendricks is decent in a frumpy role that is sold from under her by the film's last-act twists. Nicholas Hoult, alongside his "Mad Max: Fury Road" co-star, has little to do (zero mouth-spraying), while Tye Sheridan again proves he's unsurpassable in the surly, misunderstood adolescent stakes, though even his talents cannot convince us he'll grow up to be Corey Stoll. We kick things off with The Last Survivors from Dark Sky Films and the very same day, Uncork’d Entertainment is unleashing their werewolf flick Dark Moon Rising which stars Eric Roberts.

On August 7th, A24 is planning on taking viewers to some Dark Places, and we’ve got a handful of movies arriving in mid-month including the thriller Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon and the stylized revenge tale Final Girl featuring the always great Abigail Breslin. A few days later, SpectreVision’s The Boy arrives on VOD and one of my personal favorite films of 2015, the spunky post-apocalyptic action adventure tale Turbo Kid, will be released on August 28th.

Gone Girl, David Fincher’s 2014 adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, was among my favorite films of last year. Although the performances were strong and Fincher proved why he’s one of the best in the business, the real star was Flynn: she wrote the screenplay, and her fast and funny dialogue was what made the film tick. The narrative was a compelling and sordid tale, but the witty barbs the characters constantly offered up were what best propelled Gone Girl through its two and a half hour running time.

By contrast, Flynn didn’t write the screenplay for Dark Places (French filmmaker Gilles Paquet-Brenner, who also directed it, did), and her gallows humor is sorely lacking throughout the film. On the surface, the plot sounds no less intriguing than the twisted yarn at the heart of...

Charlize Theron is looking for a killer who has plagued her for most of her life in the newly released trailer and poster for her mystery thriller, ‘Dark Places,’ which debuted on Yahoo! Charlize Theron is forced to solve a horrific family mystery in the trailer for Dark Places.

The thriller is a film adaptation of a novel by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn, with Sarah's Key director Gilles Paquet-Brenner behind the lens.

Libby Day (Theron) has been haunted by the murder of her mother and sisters for her entire life, especially since her brother (Tye Sheridan) was convicted of the massacre.

Now an adult, Libby is contacted by a group of amateur investigators known as the The Kill Club, who believe that a satanic cult could actually have been responsible for the murders.

Theron spoke about the troubling subject matter of Dark Places earlier in the year, revealing that it brought back memories of her own mother Gerda shooting and killing her abusive father Charles in an act of self-defence back in 1991.

"I did experience a very traumatic experience, an event, in my life.

At least Charlize Theron's character thinks so. Inclined to agree. Although you might already be fairly well acquainted with the Kill Club, the beginning of this clip sheds more light on the freaky brother and Satanic cult hysteria that lurk in the story. A24 has released a new trailer for Dark Places, the upcoming thriller based on the novel of the same name by Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn. Directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, the film stars Charlize Theron as Libby Day, a woman who, at the age of 7, survived the massacre of her family and testified against her brother as the murderer. Years later, when confronted by a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes, Libby is forced to confront the truth about what she saw—or didn’t see. This film has been in the can for a while now, and it didn’t exactly feel like a good sign when it wasn’t released in theaters last fall/winter in order to piggy back off the success of Gone Girl. The story remains interesting, and the cast is great, but the distribution of the film has been odd the say the least.

A little over one month away, the Fantasia Film Festival announced it’s second wave of titles this morning. Fantasia Film Festival holds a special place in the hearts of Sound on Sight and we could not be more excited for their upcoming edition which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Fantasia International Film Festival has unveiled the second wave of titles for its upcoming 19th edition, taking place in Montreal from July 14-Aug 4.

Takeshi Kitano’s Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen will receive its international premiere at this year’s event, while the festival will also host the world premieres of Sonny Mallhi’s Anguish, David Keating’s Cherry Tree, Jacob Gentry’s Synchronicity, Victor Zarcoff’s Slumlord and Bite from Chad Archibald and the team behind Anti-Social.

When Gone Girl caught fire, adaptations of Gillian Flynn’s other ice-cold thrillers were put into development around the same time as the film take on that bestseller. But David Fincher’s Gone Girl failed to capture the Academy’s attention in the same manner many assumed it would, and now other Flynn-related projects are inevitably losing quite a bit of steam. Take Dark Places for example – the thriller boasts an ensemble cast powered by Charlize Theron, and yet it’s avoided exposure at the U.S. box office yet, despite screening overseas and slowly plotting other release dates. What exactly happened?

The simple answer may be that distributors saw the finished cut and realized that it was no Gone Girl. But with a talented helmer and great cast, I’m still crossing my fingers for the dark, twisty thriller.
