Gilles Paquet-Brenner at an event for Dark Places (2015)

The Gone Girl Writer's Follow-Up Was A Huge A24 Flop (Despite Its Star-Studded Cast)
Image
When Gillian Flynn's third novel, "Gone Girl," hit shelves, it absolutely blew up. And the 2014 movie adaptation from David Fincher was even bigger, turning Flynn into a name to be reckoned with almost overnight. The bestselling book about a woman who faked her own kidnapping was an astounding film debut that made it feel like anything Flynn touched would turn to gold. Though she would go on to write the screenplay to the criminally underrated Steve McQueen heist drama "Widows," the first big follow-up for Flynn after the massive success of "Gone Girl" was an adaptation of her second novel, "Dark Places," about a woman who tries to solve the decades-old murders of her entire family. "Dark Places" is a much more complicated novel than "Gone Girl," but with a screenplay and direction from the talented Gilles Paquet-Brenner and a seriously stacked cast, it seemed like the movie had a real shot to succeed.

A Star-Studded Agatha Christie Murder Mystery Movie Was Overshadowed By Knives Out
Image
Everyone loves a good whodunnit. After all, these types of murder mysteries have been all the rage since the mainstream popularity of the detective mystery genre in the 1900s, where the term was first used in a 1930 novel review. Genre authors like Agatha Christie, G.K. Chesterton, and Nicholas Blake (among many others) helped establish the conventional traits of a whodunnit, such as the clever placement of red herrings and the use of specific settings (like an island or mansion) to heighten the stakes.

Christie's oeuvre is a special one, and her whodunnit mysteries hold value and appeal to this day; one only has to look at the string of Kenneth Branagh-helmed adaptations, including the fairly recent "A Haunting in Venice," to see that adaptations are still being made. An astute fictional detective like Hercule Poirot makes for an intriguing addition to a case that's tough to crack, as he...

12 Best Agatha Christie Movies, Ranked
Image
There's something very comforting about curling up with a cozy murder mystery. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. Little wonder that the format enjoyed a resurgence during the pandemic with millions seeking solace from the likes of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo." These old shows are so relaxing, their modern-day equivalents like "Poker Face" even helped me beat insomnia a few years back.

Although the term "cozy mystery" didn't exist when she was writing, Agatha Christie is now regarded as the mother of the format. After introducing Hercule Poirot in her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at...

HBO's New Thriller Show Is Something We've Wanted For 6 Years (& Continues A Decade-Long Trend)
Image
HBO's new miniseries adaptation of Gillian Flynn's Dark Places is highly anticipated by fans and long overdue. Gillian Flynn's involvement in the series as a writer and co-creator increases the likelihood of a successful adaptation. Adapting Dark Places as a limited series allows for a more thorough and detailed retelling of the complex and intricate storyline.

HBO has announced a new miniseries adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s underrated thriller novel Dark Places, and it’s something that Flynn’s fans have wanted for years. Flynn’s second published novel, Dark Places revolves around the sole survivor of a massacre in rural Kansas and the story deals with themes of the class divide and the Satanic panic that swept the U.S. in the 1980s. When it was published in 2009, Dark Places appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for two weeks in a row.

Flynn herself is...

Gillian Flynn Novel Dark Places Being Adapted At HBO
Image
When Gillian Flynn novels hit the screen, it tends to result in something highly watchable. Take, for instance, David Fincher’s big-screen adaptation of Gone Girl, with its stellar casting of Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, or HBO’s adaptation of the ultra-dark Sharp Objects, anchored by the ace Amy Adams. Now, another of Flynn’s novels is being adapted into an HBO series – her Sharp Objects follow-up Dark Places.

The series will see Flynn serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner, working alongside Brett Johnson in all those capacities – while Guerrin Gardner will be co-creator and writer. The show is said to be in early development, so stay tuned for updates of it moving further into the pipeline. The novel was previously adapted as a film by writer-director Gilles Paquet-Brenner in 2015, with Charlize Theron leading the cast, though it went largely under the radar and received mixed reviews.

Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places gets another adaptation, this time as an HBO limited series
Image
Variety reports that HBO is developing a limited series based on Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places. If that strikes a chord, you might remember that Dark Places was previously adapted into a film starring Charlize Theron. The film received mediocre reviews and only grossed $5.1 million upon its release in 2015, so it’s entirely understandable if you don’t remember it.

The logline of the novel, which was originally published in 2009, states: “Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in the famous 1985 ‘Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.’ She survived—and famously testified that her teenage brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, a pair of mother/daughter true crime ‘detectives’ locate a grownup Libby and pump her for details, believing that Ben is innocent. Libby, having spent her youth working the talk show circuit, hopes to once again turn a profit off her tragic history:...

The 2009 novel follows Libby Day across decades as she revisits the death of her mother and two sisters amid an alleged Satanic killing spree in Kinnakee, Kansas in 1985. While Libby survived, she testified that her teenage brother Ben was the murderer.

Dark Places review – sibling thriller verges on the silly
Charlize Theron stars in this creaky satanic mystery adaptation from Gone Girl author, Gillian Flynn

The week’s second under-par release featuring Chloë Grace Moretz is an adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s typically twisty 2009 potboiler. The producer and star, Charlize Theron, plays Libby Day, a tormented soul whose brother, Ben, has been in prison for murdering his mother and sisters ever since Libby testified against him as an eight-year-old. Lyle Wirth (Nicholas Hoult), an amateur criminologist-cum-murder-geek, and his “kill club” cohorts believe that Ben is innocent, but Libby is unwilling to face up to the guilty secrets that lurk in her own... dark places!

The premise is creaky and the satanic-scare backstory more intriguingly handled in Alejandro Amenábar’s wrongly ridiculed Regression. But Sarah’s Key director Gilles Paquet-Brenner invests the split-time action with some brooding menace and the cinematographer, Barry Ackroyd, does his best to lend some urgency,...

Charlize Theron Is In Over Her Head In UK Trailer For Dark Places
Though it may not have fared terribly well upon releasing across North America a few months ago – a mooted box office coupled with underwhelming reviews – Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s Dark Places is yet to release for those in the United Kingdom, and today’s new trailer quietly reminds moviegoers across the pond that, yes, the thriller is still very much on the way.

Lifted from Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, Paquet-Brenner’s crime drama pits Charlize Theron in the lead role as Libby Day, the estranged daughter who witnessed her mother and two sisters mercilessly slaughtered in an event that went down in history as The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas when she was only seven. Shortly thereafter, Libby attributed blame on her older brother (Ant-Man‘s Corey Stoll) who was shipped off to serve an overlong (and possibly unjust?) prison sentence.

Fast forward two and a half...

Dark Places Review
Hot on the heels of Gone Girl, David Fincher’s dementedly enjoyable Gillian Flynn adaptation, comes a second Flynn-based movie under the guidance of Gilles Paquet-Brenner. With it comes another stellar cast, Flynn’s built-in fanbase, and a morose story involving secret societies that obsess over (un)solved mysteries of the past – another home run you might assume, right?

Wrong. Dark Places doesn’t come across nearly as dark as Flynn’s book reads, and can’t hold a candle to the twisted insanity Fincher was able to find in the author’s work not even a year ago. Brenner’s deadly story feels watered down and slight when compared to the tone you’d imagine from Flynn’s novelization, and fails to create any drama worth a sadistic chill.

Moral of the story: it’s exactly what’d you’d expect from a buried DirectTV release starring such immense talents as Charlize Theron,...

Dark Places Is Dark, But Doesn’t Go Anyplace
Gilles Paquet-Brenner at an event for Dark Places (2015)
“I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ” are the opening words of narration in Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s Dark Places, adapted from Gillian (Gone Girl) Flynn’s novel. Spoken by Charlize Theron, playing Libby Day, who as a child survived the gruesome murder of most of her family, the words have bite; Theron, as she proved yet again earlier this year in Mad Max: Fury Road, has a natural, irresistible intensity. You believe that she could beat you, then cut you, then spit on you for good measure … and then somehow make you beg for more. The story unfolds in two timelines. In one, grown-up Libby, having once made her name as “the little orphan girl of the Kansas Prairie Massacre,” is approached by true-crime aficionado Lyle Wirth (Theron’s Fury Road co-star Nicholas Hoult) to talk to his “Kill Club,” a gathering of mystery fiends, and help...

Review: Charlize Theron's Relentlessly Grim And Dour 'Dark Places'
Everyone enjoys a brief opening paragraph, so why don't we spend it listing all the things that "Dark Places," from director Gilles Paquet-Brenner ("Sarah's Key"), gets right. Its cast is undoubtedly committed, particularly a convincingly grimy Charlize Theron, and an enjoyably off-the-leash Chloe Grace Moretz, though it feels like they signed on to different films, and continued under that misapprehension all the way through shooting. Christina Hendricks is decent in a frumpy role that is sold from under her by the film's last-act twists. Nicholas Hoult, alongside his "Mad Max: Fury Road" co-star, has little to do (zero mouth-spraying), while Tye Sheridan again proves he's unsurpassable in the surly, misunderstood adolescent stakes, though even his talents cannot convince us he'll grow up to be Corey Stoll. The Barry Ackroyd photography is unobjectionably gritty. Eyelines match. It's all screamingly competent. Read More: Watch: Charlize Theron, Nicholas...

A few days later, SpectreVision’s The Boy arrives on VOD and one of my personal favorite films of 2015, the spunky post-apocalyptic action adventure tale Turbo Kid, will be released on August 28th.

Fantasia 2015: “Dark Places” is weighed down by boring characters
Dark Places

Written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner

USA, 2015

Gone Girl, David Fincher’s 2014 adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, was among my favorite films of last year. Although the performances were strong and Fincher proved why he’s one of the best in the business, the real star was Flynn: she wrote the screenplay, and her fast and funny dialogue was what made the film tick. The narrative was a compelling and sordid tale, but the witty barbs the characters constantly offered up were what best propelled Gone Girl through its two and a half hour running time.

By contrast, Flynn didn’t write the screenplay for Dark Places (French filmmaker Gilles Paquet-Brenner, who also directed it, did), and her gallows humor is sorely lacking throughout the film. On the surface, the plot sounds no less intriguing than the twisted yarn at the heart of...

Charlize Theron relives a gruesome family tragedy in Gillian Flynn's Dark Places trailer
Charlize Theron in Dark Places (2015)
Charlize Theron is forced to solve a horrific family mystery in the trailer for Dark Places.

The thriller is a film adaptation of a novel by Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn, with Sarah's Key director Gilles Paquet-Brenner behind the lens.

Libby Day (Theron) has been haunted by the murder of her mother and sisters for her entire life, especially since her brother (Tye Sheridan) was convicted of the massacre.

Now an adult, Libby is contacted by a group of amateur investigators known as the The Kill Club, who believe that a satanic cult could actually have been responsible for the murders.

Theron spoke about the troubling subject matter of Dark Places earlier in the year, revealing that it brought back memories of her own mother Gerda shooting and killing her abusive father Charles in an act of self-defence back in 1991.

"I did experience a very traumatic experience, an event, in my life.

Dark Places (2015) Movie Trailer 2: Charlize Theron + Devil Worshippers = Sold.
Dark Places Trailer 2. Gilles Paquet-Brenner‘s Dark Places (2015) movie trailer 2 stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Chloë Grace Moretz, Corey Stoll, and Christina Hendricks. Dark Places‘ plot synopsis: “A woman who survived the brutal killing of her family as a child is forced to confront the events of that day by a secret society obsessed with solving notorious crimes.”

This is the second trailer for the Charlize Theron thriller based on a Gillian Flynn novel. In the wake of the success of Gone, Girl, it seems her source materials have increased in value. This looks pretty decent. A procedural, of sorts, to find who really murdered her family. Her brother is innocent, this trailer tells us. Devil worshippers are involved, this trailer tells us. That is essentially all I need to know to be sold on this film. It’s strange to see Hoult and Theron together again in a film...

Charlize Theron Thinks Everybody’s Allergic to the Truth in the New Dark Places Trailer
Gilles Paquet-Brenner at an event for Dark Places (2015)
A24 posted the latest trailer for Gilles Paquet-Brenner's Dark Places (based on Gillian Flynn's 2009 novel), and everybody in this thing is either creepy or allergic to the truth or a bad combination of both. At least Charlize Theron's character thinks so. Inclined to agree. Although you might already be fairly well acquainted with the Kill Club, the beginning of this clip sheds more light on the freaky brother and Satanic cult hysteria that lurk in the story. Drama! If you're into the trailer, Deadline reports that you can actually watch the whole shebang now — provided you or someone you know has DirecTV. The TV company is offering the film to its customers exclusively for the next seven weeks, before A24 begins the movie's theatrical rollout. Enjoy.

Watch the New Trailer for Dark Places, Starring Charlize Theron & Nicholas Hoult
"I was eight the night they were killed. The little orphan girl of the Kansas Prairie Massacre." A new trailer for Dark Places, the film based on Gillian Flynn's 2009 novel of the same name, has arrived, offering a look at a decades-old family murder mystery starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll and more.

"Libby Day (Charlize Theron) was only seven years old when her mother and two sisters were brutally murdered in their rural Kansas farmhouse. In court, the traumatized child pointed the finger at her brother, Ben (Tye Sheridan), and her testimony put the troubled 16-year-old in prison for life. Twenty-five years later, a broke and desperate Libby has run through donations from a sympathetic public and royalties from her sensational autobiography, without ever moving past the events of that night.

When Libby accepts a fee to appear at a gathering of true-crime aficionados led by Lyle...

Dark Places: Charlize Theron Investigates Kansas Prairie Massacre
From author Gillian Flynn, whose Gone Girl was adapted into one of 2014’s best films, Dark Places is yet another dark thriller with seeming spillover into warped sensibilities and possibly all-out horror. Dark Places Trailer: Charlize Theron Leads Thriller from Gone Girl Author
A24 has released a new trailer for Dark Places, the upcoming thriller based on the novel of the same name by Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn. Directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, the film stars Charlize Theron as Libby Day, a woman who, at the age of 7, survived the massacre of her family and testified against her brother as the murderer. Years later, when confronted by a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes, Libby is forced to confront the truth about what she saw—or didn’t see. This film has been in the can for a while now, and it didn’t exactly feel like a good sign when it wasn’t released in theaters last fall/winter in order to piggy back off the success of Gone Girl. The story remains interesting, and the cast is great, but the distribution of the film has been odd the say the least.

Trailer: Charlize Theron In "Dark Places"
Following the success of the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn's third novel "Gone Girl," it's no surprise that anticipation is high for the film adaptation of her second book "Dark Places".

Gilles Paquet-Brenner helms the thriller starring Charlize Theron as a woman whose mother and sisters were brutally murdered when she was a seven year old child. At the time her testimony put the blame on her sixteen-year-old brother who was sent to prison for life.

Twenty-five years later and broke, she ends up reluctantly helping out a group of true-crime aficionados led by Lyle (Nicholas Hoult) who believe her brother is innocent and the real killer is still at large. As they look into that night again, she begins to confront the wrenching truths that led up to that horrific night.

Christina Hendricks, Corey Stoll, Tye Sheridan and Chloe Grace Moretz also star in the film which hits...

Dark Places International Trailer Reminds Us That The Film Exists
When Gone Girl caught fire, adaptations of Gillian Flynn’s other ice-cold thrillers were put into development around the same time as the film take on that bestseller. But David Fincher’s Gone Girl failed to capture the Academy’s attention in the same manner many assumed it would, and now other Flynn-related projects are inevitably losing quite a bit of steam. Take Dark Places for example – the thriller boasts an ensemble cast powered by Charlize Theron, and yet it’s avoided exposure at the U.S. box office yet, despite screening overseas and slowly plotting other release dates. What exactly happened?

The simple answer may be that distributors saw the finished cut and realized that it was no Gone Girl. But with a talented helmer and great cast, I’m still crossing my fingers for the dark, twisty thriller.

Dark Places centers on Libby Day (Sterling Jerins), who was...
