The pace is picking up with studio wide release A Minecraft Movie booming and plenty of indie fare to fill out behind from Neon’s Hell of a Summer and IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America to Fathom’s next installment of The Chosen and expansions of The Friend from Bleecker Street and Gkids’ re-release of Princess Mononoke.
CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners and studios, wrapped last night in Las Vegas. Exhibitors’ tempers were strained by a sour first quarter at the box office and there was an explosion of talk around longer theatrical windows which will for sure remain an ongoing conversation. That said, Q1 is behind us so here’s to hoping for a sustained period of more movies — many highlighted in Vegas — and higher-grossing movies to lift all boats.
Neon opens Hell Of A Summer on 1,255 screens after Thursday previews and early shows took in $215k.

Mass school shootings feel as inherent to the mid-American landscape as SUVs and fundamentalist Christianity. Michael Shannon’s feature-length directorial debut, Eric Larue, adapted by Brett Neveu from his 2002 play of the same name, attempts to capture just how little the social infrastructure of a small town in the United States can do for those affected by such spectacles of violence. But while Eric Larue features a strong performance from Judy Greer, its portrait of this swath of the U.S. is essentially a patchwork of broad strokes that rarely feel like they’re bringing that world to credible life.
Disaffected and listless in the indeterminate period since her son, Eric (Nation Sage Henrikson), shot and killed three of his classmates, Janice (Greer) begins venturing back into the world in small ways. She returns to her job at a hardware store and opens up a dialogue with her pastor, Steve...

Cameras are still rolling on the second season of Marvel Television's Daredevil: Born Again, and we now have word on a new addition to the cast of the Disney+ series.
Set photos have already revealed that Annie Parisse will appear in an undisclosed role (all we know is that her character is detained by Kingpin's anti-vigilante task force), and Deadline is reporting that Lily Taylor will be joining her.
We don't have a name for Taylor's character just yet, but she is believed to be playing "a political foe for Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk." As previously reported, Matthew Lillard is also on board.
Two episodes of Born Again aired this week, and the second saw Matt Murdock (finally) suit up as Daredevil again to track down and take out the serial killer known as Muse.

Marvel Television is finally giving Charlie Cox's Daredevil suit the Dd chest emblem. New set photos from Daredevil: Born Again have emerged, revealing the new black suit that the Man Without Fear will don in the upcoming Season 2.
Shared on X by MCU Report, the six Born Again Season 2 set photos feature Cox's Matt Murdock in a variety of positions while suited up in the new black Daredevil suit. However, a closer look at the set photos seems to reveal that the Season 2 suit is actually the current red Daredevil suit spray-painted black, as bits of red can be seen poking through the black. The Dd chest emblem is also the same color red as the suit Murdock can be seen wearing in Season 1 of the Disney+ continuation. Check out the Season 2 set photos below.

The nine episode first season of the Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again just made its premiere on Disney+ earlier this month (you can read our review Here), but season 2 of the show already started filming at the end of February. We previously heard that Deborah Ann Woll would be back as Matt Murdock’s friend and law office partner Karen Page in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and now Woll has been spotted on set, in character, hanging out with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock. Also spotted on set were members of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, who were giving a character played by Annie Parisse (Law & Order) a hard time. The images can be seen in the embeds below.

Exciting news for fans of Daredevil: Born Again! Some new photos from the set of season 2 have recently surfaced online, revealing that a new cast member will be joining the show.
The series has been filming for a few weeks now, and so far we’ve seen plenty of stuff, leaked propaganda posters glorifying Fisk’s anti-vigilante efforts and Karen sporting a cheap-looking red wig.
New leaked images however tease a new crew member as actress Annie Parisse—known for her roles in Law and Order, Monster in Law, and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days—can be seen in a dramatic moment where she’s being detained by Kingpin’s anti-vigilante task force (Avtf).

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Set Photos Reveal New Character Being Detained By The Avtf - Spoilers
Cameras have been rolling on the second seasoon of Marvel's Darededvil: Born Again for a few weeks at this stage, and while we haven't seen anything too spoiler-y so far, the set photos being shared online are starting to get a little more revealing.
There will be spoilers from this point on.
These latest set snaps reveal that Annie Parisse has joined the cast for season 2, and it looks like her character is going to find herself on Mayor Wilson Fisk's bad side.
Though we have no idea if Parisse will play an established Marvel Comics character, these photos show her being detained by the Kingpin's anti-vigilante task force (The Avtf). A previous rumor claimed that season 2 of Born Again will focus on the Man Without Fear assembling his own team to combat Kingpin's forces, so Parisse might well be playing a member of Murdock's new crew.

Not every movie needs to be Citizen Kane. Sometimes audiences need something light and fluffy so they can forget their worries and just come out of the theater with a smile. That's the statement Kate Hudson has made in defense of her romantic comedy run, which may have generated solid box office but was met with less than favorable reactions from critics. In defending her rom-com run, Hudson wants to remind critics that they weren't trying to win awards.
During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Hudson spoke about the negative reviews some of her romantic comedies endured despite them being more warmly received by moviegoers. Films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (42 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and the trifecta of Fools Gold, Bride Wars and Something Borrowed (15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) became a staple of Hudson's career...despite the displeasure some critics had watching them. Grief comes in many forms; sometimes, it can drive survivors apart instead of bringing them together. Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) is expressing himself in Collider’s exclusive first-look at the trailer for Three Birthdays. Transporting audiences back to the grooviest and most self-expressive decade of them all — the 1970s — filmmaker and co-writer, Jane Weinstock, uses her latest film as an avenue to explore one family’s attempt to embrace the counterculture with open arms and let their freak flags fly. Joining Radnor as his on-screen wife and daughter, respectively, are Annie Parisse (As the World Turns) and Nuala Cleary (The Crowded Room). Ahead of its January 24 opening at The Village East in New York City, Collider is thrilled to debut the film’s trailer, which invites audiences to explore complex family dynamics and the idea of revolution both at home and within the self.

Annie Parisse had the shortest run as an Ada on Law & Order, playing Alexandra Borgia in 33 episodes of the Og series. Parisse earlier played another role in a 2002 episode, Attorney Client, before landing the regular role. Not only was her run on the show cut short, but she had one of the most brutal endings for a Law & Order main character.

Kate Hudson reveals that both her and co-star Matthew McConaughey are open to making a sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The romantic comedy came out in 2003, but the actress is constantly asked if there are any plans for Andie (Hudson) and Ben (McConaughey) to return for a big-screen follow-up one of the funniest scenes has to be seeing Ben get knocked out by another moviegoer at a screening of Sleepless in Seattle. Hudson dished on the matter in a brand-new interview with Andy Cohen during an appearance on the Watch What Happens Live podcast. At the 6:45 mark, Cohen asks about a sequel, and Hudson replies:
I think theyre always thinking about that. And it would just all that matters would be the script, and if Matthew and I were like into the script [] I think were both totally open, but it just never has happened.

A month away from potentially receiving his first Emmy nomination, Michael Shannon is branching out into directing with “Eric Larue,” Brett Neveu’s adaptation of his own 2002 play. Following a mother seeking some semblance of normalcy in a town rocked by the horrific act of violence perpetrated by her son against three classmates, the movie just premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival to significant acclaim for its leading lady, veteran character actor Judy Greer. Considering the subject, comparisons to “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Mass” are unsurprising.
Alexander Skarsgård co-stars as Greer’s born-again husband, and Paul Sparks (with whom Shannon has worked on “Boardwalk Empire” and “Waco”), Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Tracy Letts (“Lady Bird”), Annie Parisse (“The Following”), Kate Arrington (“George & Tammy”) and Nation Sage Henrikson (“Shameless”) comprise the rest of the main cast. Premiering Saturday night in the Tribeca Film Festival’s Spotlight Narrative category, Eric Larue is an intense and devastating account of the after effects of a school shooting, but the focus is almost entirely on the parents of that boy who shot and killed three male classmates and is now in prison. Adapted by Brett Neveu from his own 2002 stage play, it has taken on new weight in the two decades since it was first presented at Chicago’s Red Orchid Theatre in light of the seemingly endless numbers of school shootings and the fact that the number one cause for deaths of young people is now by gun. But for his feature film directorial debut actor Michael Shannon was most interested in looking at the effects of this traumatic life-changing incident from the point of view of the parents, those of the kids killed, and particularly the pair of...

An ensemble of gifted actors effectively play against type in Michael Shannon’s quietly powerful directing debut, none more so than Judy Greer, outwardly numbed by sorrow but raw inside as a mother whose son shot and killed three high school classmates. While the subject matter inevitably invites comparison with Mass, that well-received 2021 chamber piece — also a first feature by an actor, Fran Kranz — kept its focus tight on two sets of parents on either side of a similar tragedy. Eric Larue casts a wider gaze, taking in the broader community and the religious leaders fumbling or manipulating the conversation about healing.
Shannon’s deep roots in Chicago theater are evident in his choice of material and his success at assembling a first-rate cast — uncommonly strong across the board for a modestly scaled indie like this.

The original Law & Order debuted in 1990; since then, the franchise has grown into a massive crime-fighting universe comprised of numerous shows. Although each series has its main cast, they bring in reoccurring characters and one-off disposable characters for every single episode.

Some Law & Order series have run for more than 20 seasons and many of these shows have hundreds of episodes in their catalog. Dominic Fumusa may be more recognizable from his role as Ray Conlin in Homeland but Fumusa has made several appearances on three different Law & Order shows. While he never played a main or reoccurring character, Fumusa is no stranger to Law & Order's sets.

If directors David Lynch and Darren Aronofsky went on a road trip through working class America to meet a long-lost cousin, surely filmmaker Theodore Schaefer would come along for the ride. That’s the vibe you get when watching Giving Birth to a Butterfly, Schaefer’s moving, sometimes haunting, yet thoroughly intriguing debut feature. Shot on pastel 16mm, this film drips with achiness as it follows a mysterious road trip taken by two relative strangers whose lives are brought together by chance.
If you’re into surreal, fantasy-like outings in the vein of Twin Peaks, or even one of those alt-universe Riverdale seasons, Giving Birth to a Butterfly should do the trick. What works in Schaefer’s favor, however, is that he grounds his story, which was co-written with screenwriter Patrick Lawler, in something relatable: a family surviving economic hardship and layers of unexpressed emotions.

If anyone is complaining that Hollywood has "run out of ideas" and that everything is a remake or sequel, they'd do well to research a small but burgeoning new crop of post-digital indie films that tap into the dread, anxieties, and sometimes comical surreality of our present age. These movies are often a little creepy, boldly ambiguous, a bit hazy, and a potent antidote to mainstream cinema. Embracing 16mm film, unique aspect ratios like 1.2:1, shorter runtimes, and small stories, these independent films couldn't be more different than the bloated three-hour-long CGI spectacles in theaters.
In the past two years, Enys Men, Funny Pages, Falcon Lake, Tahara, Skinamarink, and We're All Going to the World's Fair have exemplified this new post-digital style, and one of the producers of that latter title, the surprisingly successful World's Fair film, has now added to the movement with his own film. "I got scammed, Marlene, that's why we're doing this." Cinedigm has revealed a trailer for an experimental indie film titled Giving Birth to a Butterfly, marking the feature directorial debut of Theodore Schaefer. It first premiered in 2021 at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, and is finally getting a proper release after waiting a few years - it's streaming on Fandor this May. "Pure weirdo magic. Like Donnie Darko meets Twin Peaks." After having her identity stolen, a woman, and her son's pregnant girlfriend, bond together on a surreal journey as they attempt to track down the perpetrators. Described by The Austin Chronicle as “a strange and fragile story of family, identity, and the unlikely directions of a search for self," Giving Birth to a Butterfly "mixes melancholy and anxiety with a Lynchian touch" and "takes place in a parallel universe that looks and acts like suburbia, just ever so slightly off.

One of the highlights we caught at Fantasia International Film Festival in 2021 now has a home and it’s arriving sooner than expected. Theodore Schaefer’s debut feature Giving Birth to a Butterfly has been picked up by Cinedigm, who will release it in select theaters beginning May 1 before premiering on Fandor on May 16. The Lynchian fantasy tale, shot on 16mm, follows Annie Parisse as a suburban mom whose identity gets stolen. She begins to bond with her son’s pregnant girlfriend (Gus Birney) when they take a dreamlike, visually immersive road-trip journey to track down the perpetrators. Ahead of the release, we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer.
“Tapping into a nervous dream logic that still resembles the mad world we exist in, Giving Birth to a Butterfly is one of the most cine-literate American debuts I’ve seen in a while,” said Aaron Hillis, Director of Programming for Cinedigm.

Jane Fonda went down memory lane on The Drew Barrymore Show remembering films from her acting career. When an image of the 2005 rom-com Monster-in-Law came up, Fonda recalled the infamous slap scene opposite Jennifer Lopez that left her with an injury.
“The thing that comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene – I slap her, she slaps me…,” Fonda recalled. “Well Jennifer, as per Jennifer, she had this enormous diamond ring and so when she slapped me one of the times it cut open across my eye – my eyebrow.”
Fonda continued, “And she’s never apologized.”
Monster-in-Law was directed by Robert Luketic and written by Anya Kochoff about aspiring fashion designer Charlie (Lopez) who has to face her mother-in-law played by Fonda who will do anything to ruin her relationship with her son. The film marked Fonda’s return to the movies after a 15-year absence since...

Other actors set for the pic include Jasmine Batchelor (New Amsterdam), Uly Schlesinger (Generation), Gus Birney (Shining Vale), Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer), Annie McNamara (Severance) and Dolly Wells (Doll & Em).

“Law & Order” is bringing back yet another familiar face. While NBC previously announced that Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson will both be reprising their roles of D.A. Jack McCoy and Detective Kevin Bernard, respectively, they aren’t the only ones stepping back into the courtroom — and the list of possible guest stars is endless.
“One of the wonderful things about doing a television show in New York like this with really juicy parts for visitors is that there’s this extraordinary pool of talent of New York actors. So, the hope and expectation is that there will be a wonderful surprise every week,” Waterston tells Variety, before hinting at one of those surprises. “There is a person coming back in the first show, one of my favorite people on Earth. I’m not allowed to tell who that is, but you’ll be glad when you see her.

Giving Birth To A Butterfly Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
It is, without doubt, one of the most unusual films at 2021’s Fantasia International Film Festival, and one that viewers won’t forget in a hurry. Following Diana (Annie Parisse), a woman who, upon realising she has been the victim of an internet scam, embarks on a road trip with her son’s girlfriend which takes her to some very strange places, Giving Birth To A Butterfly has a distinctive look, a quirky sense of humour and a surprising amount of philosophical weight. After I bumped into director Theodore Schaeffer (generally known as Ted) at a karaoke night at the festival, we agreed to do an interview so that he could talk about how this strange beast originally emerged from its chrysalis.

That means no money for Drew (Owen Campbell) or Danielle’s (Rachel Resheff) college. No money to stop working extra hours at the pharmacy. No money for anything besides his selfish need to break free of a constrained life as if he’s the only one struggling to come up for air. There’s a three legged white deer ornament on the windowsill in Marlene’s mother’s house. Is it broken? Was it made wrong? Perhaps it’s just different.
Diana (Annie Parisse) wiill later tell Marlene (Gus Birney) about a time when she was driving in a snowstorm and saw a white deer running beside her, keeping pace with her car. It’s a tale imbued with a kind of spiritual insight which seems unlikely for a respectable middle aged housewife whose entire existence is constrained by square format, but perhaps it speaks to something within her that usually goes unseen. Unexpected things happen when Marlene enters her life because despite the best efforts of other family members, there are now forces at work that cannot be tidily overcome. Starring Annie Parisse and Gus Birney (“Dickinson”), Theodore Schaefer’s “Giving Birth to a Butterfly,” one of the buzz titles at August’s Fantasia Intl. Film Festival, has released a first clip ahead of the film’s world premiere in Fantasia Underground section on Aug. 9.
Produced by Daryl Freimark, “Giving Birth to a Butterfly,” is executive produced by Hannah Dweck for Dweck Productions and by Benjamin Wiessner, who is additionally handling sales for Vanishing Angle.
Written by Schaefer and Patrick Lawler, the feature debut underscores how new generation of highly cine-literate filmmakers blend multiple styles not only over the course of a film but in single scenes.
In “Giving Birth to a Butterfly,” Diana Dent, a put-upon housewife and mother of two, married to a feckless husband, suffers credit card fraud from a company which is registered at an address a full-day’s drive from where Diana lives.

Apparently, Friends From College has been canceled by Netflix, meaning it won't be returning for a third season anytime soon. Womp, womp.
The dark comedy follows a seriously f*cked up group of adult friends as they navigate life together in New York City. Although the characters are ones you love to hate, rather than straight-up love, the news that we won't get resolutions to relationships between Ethan (Keegan-Michael Key) and Sam (Annie Parisse), as well as Ethan and Lisa (Cobie Smulders), the latter of whom appears to be pregnant with her ex-husband's baby in the season two finale, "The Wedding," is a bummer. The last episode of the second season is full of other cliffhangers regarding the fate of Lisa and Nick's relationship, as well as whether or not Ethan will return to Sam after ditching her and their romantic trip to Paris so he can accompany Lisa to the gynecologist.
