It was not Shefali Jariwala who immortalized the number ‘Kaanta laga’. It was veteran actress Asha Parekh who first created a stir in 1972 with ‘Kaanta laga’ which was a part of the film Samadhi. It was also remade in Telugu as Nindu Manishi in 1978.
Shedding light on the catchy song Asha Parekh says, “It was part of the film Samadhi in which Dharmendra and I co-starred. He had a double role of father and son. I was paired with the father and Jaya Bachchan was with the son. It was my good fortune that the big hit song came to me.”
Ashaji recalls ‘Kaanta laga’ as an upbeat folk dance number composed by Rahul Dev Burman. “It was peppy and catchy. We were all humming the song when shooting it. But did I think it would become such a rage in retrospect? No! Success on that level cannot be predicted by anyone.

Subhash K Jha celebrates Hrithik Roshan’s Krissh, which released in 2006. Director Rakesh Roshan speaks about the making of the superhero film in this fabulous edition of This Day That Year..
We’ve seen it before in Superman, Batman, and King Kong. But our Krrish has something extra-special that those films didn’t. Hrithik Roshan. Extraordinary is the word for the measured manner in which he glides through the air to the beat of Rajesh Roshan’s rather-vapid songs… or cuts through the breeze to the stunning special effects created with a verve so far unknown to Indian cinema.
Krrish takes us into the world of masked fantasy where the stakes are incredibly high… as high as the computer-generated leaps that the super-hero takes as he tries to save the world from the clutches of a megalomaniacal villain with a glint in his eyes that can only belong to Naseeruddin Shah.

Sunil Dutt didn’t pretend to be a feminist. It came naturally to him. He would pick up his wife the great Nargis’s trailing gown from the floor as easily as he could play the reformist hero of his lovely leading lady Nutan in the fabulous Sujata. And when Nutan became the dominant spouse in Khandaan , Dutt Saab surrendered wholeheartedly to the mollycoddling.
In an interview conducted in the 1990s, Sunil Dutt told Subhash K Jha. “I didn’t think of these things, whether my role was more or less than my leading lady. In Mother India, Nargisji was the hero. I am thankful for the opportunity to play her son in Mother India, that’s how we met and became man and wife.”
Among all the screen heroes, Sunil Dutt was the only true feminist. While several leading men pretend to believe in gender equality their actions prove otherwise.

Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on Raj Khosla and shares Filmistan praise for the noted producer, screenwriter and director. Along with the great films, focus also turns to the outstanding music he selected to enhance and expand his films -the man, his movies and the music.

Shining the spotlight on the career of the incredible Sunil Dutt, Subhash K Jha walks down memory lane and hears from some of Dutt’s co-stars on why they thought he was so special.
“A true gentleman” is how the legendary Waheeda Rehman describes Sunil Dutt. “He was kind, considerate, and very supportive as a co-star. Dutt Saab ke baare mein jo tareef karen wohkam hai. All of us heroines felt very special in his presence. A wonderful friend, a devoted husband, and a terrific co-star, what more can any woman want? The films I did with Dutt Saab didn’t become big hits. But I cherished every moment of Reshma Aur Shera, which he directed. I even got the National Award for Reshma Aur Shera. Lekin National award unhe milni chahiye. Every frame in Reshma Aur Shera was Dutt Saab’s vision.”

Bollywood Thriller With Superstar In Talks ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
After a lean phase in the 1990s, legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan made an illustrious comeback by first appearing in the popular quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati.’ This was followed by a string of successful movies like Mohabbatein and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Another one of those films was ‘Aankhen,’ which came out in 2002.
The stylishly executed heist thriller is still regarded as one of the most unique films of the early 2000s cinematic era. It also featured Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Paresh Rawal, and Sushmita Sen in pivotal roles. Aankhen received rave reviews from both critics and viewers at the time of its release.

Actors Who Made It In Bollywood Without Industry Ties ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
In a film industry often shaped by dynastic privilege, a few actors have carved paths purely through resilience and talent. Without family backing or influential mentors, these five performers broke through the noise with grit and consistent hard work. Their stories serve as testaments to the idea that merit still matters in Bollywood.
Manoj Bajpayee
Hailing from Bihar, Manoj Bajpayee’s journey began with multiple rejections from the National School of Drama. He eventually made a mark in theatre, leading to a game-changing role in Satya (1998) as Bhiku Mhatre. Known for acclaimed work in Aligarh, The Family Man, and Gangs of Wasseypur, Bajpayee continues to be a powerful force in performance-driven cinema.

Shah Bano Verdict Film(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Forty years ago, the Supreme Court delivered a judgment that would become one of the most significant — and controversial — legal rulings in India’s constitutional history. The Mohd. Ahmad Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case (1985) affirmed the right of a divorced Muslim woman to claim maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPC, irrespective of religious personal law.
Shah Bano, a 62-year-old mother of five, had been divorced via triple talaq by her husband, a lawyer, who refused to pay her maintenance. Her fight went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in her favor — a victory for gender justice that underscored the primacy of constitutional rights over personal law.
The verdict, however, sparked fierce backlash from conservative religious groups. In response, the government enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, effectively curbing the judgment’s impact and reigniting national debate around secularism,...

Bollywood Beats Hollywood Records(Photo Credit –Hotstar)
When one thinks of Indian films that have left a lasting impression globally, titles like Sholay, Awaara, Baahubali, or Rrr usually spring to mind. These blockbusters boasted unforgettable performances and soundtracks. Over time, these films cemented their place in the pantheon of iconic Indian cinema, both at home and abroad. And yet, hidden in plain sight, there’s one film that quietly outpaced some of Bollywood’s biggest giants in one key metric: ticket sales.
This isn’t about box office collections but about the sheer number of people who actually went out and bought a ticket. And what’s even more surprising? The film in question isn’t often mentioned in typical lists of all-time Indian greats. It didn’t spawn a franchise, it wasn’t driven by megastar power, and it didn’t rely on visual effects wizardry.
1971 Caravan sold more than 300 million tickets in Asia,...

I can’t deny Aamir Khan is one of the most adventurous performers in India. Aamir has constantly taken risks, gone against the flow, and generally has been more than just a mega-star. What’s more, I’ve always found him to be incredibly true to his word. If he had ideological differences with Ram Gopal Varma, no amount of reasoning would convince him to the contrary….If he thought popular awards were rigged, he didn’t change his mind about boycotting them even when Lagaan won, and Aamir won a truckload of trophies..
At one point in time, very long ago, I was actually close enough to Aamir to reason with him. He seemed to listen to what I had to say, though I suspect he made his own decisions independent of extraneous opinion.
Aamir was too polite to argue back. But I knew he was capable of fighting...

Zeenat Aman Once Addressed The Less Flattering Side Of Some Of Her Films( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Zeenat Aman is a renowned actress and model in the Hindi film industry. She is celebrated for introducing a modern and Westernized portrayal of women in Bollywood, breaking traditional norms, and redefining the image of the Hindi film heroine. However, she once admitted to cringing at some of her old films. Scroll below for the deets.
Some of the characters played by the actress still remain iconic, for example, Roma from Don and Rupa in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. She gained recognition after appearing in Dev Anand’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna. In the 1970s and 1980s, Aman was reportedly one of the highest-paid actresses. She blended glamour, modernity, and depth into her characters, paving the way for future generations of actresses.
However, the actress also acknowledged the melodramatic or the less flattering side of cinema back in the day.

Aamir Khan’s dream of teaming up with Sridevi never came true. He had a script ready which he wanted to direct with Sridevi and himself. That never happened.

National Awards are widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in Indian cinema, valued for their integrity, lack of commercial flamboyance, and support for alternative, parallel, and small-budget yet impactful films across various languages and regions of the country. The National Award is a badge of honor for the filmography of any actor. Compared to other award ceremonies, National Awards are largely considered more authentic and unbiased, as these awards are selected by a jury of esteemed people.
Over the years, National Awards have diversified with many new awards introduced over some time. However, the diversification of the awards has also led to controversies regarding the awards and their adherence to unbiased selection. Time and again concerns were raised regarding the selection of artists for the National Awards, particularly in the case of films like “Rudaali” (1992), “Daman” (2000), Hum Tum” (2004), “The Kashmir Files” (2021), etc., and artists like Kirron Kher,...

It’s an ongoing process. As long as I feel creative and as long as I feel there are some people who want to watch my films I’ll continue to make them. If I’m not as enthusiastic about my new film then I’ve no business making it. The very fact that I’ve picked up the responsibility of directing another film proves I’ve the energy for it. Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Merry Christmas
Starring Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi
Directed by Sriram Raghavan
Yadhoom is the home-made whiskey that Albert’s uncle, played by Tinu Anand , recommends as the spirit of the season: create your own yadhoom and have a good time in life.
This is what Sriram Raghavan does. His yadhoom may not match with yours. But heck, life is what you make of it. Merry Christmas is not a merry film. Come to think of it, it is not even Christmassy. Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) are two wistful souls who collide on Christmas eve in neon-lit Bombay (this is when Mumbai was Bombay) in the 1970s when , Rajesh Khanna, Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana and Kati Patang and R D Burman ruled the charts.
Sriram gives us that sense of old world connectivity between the couple which we thought died with Albert’s favourite film Dddl (Dil Diya...

2023 is coming to an end, but what is it, even a life without any lows or a little bit of bickering? So even this year, there were a lot of celebrities who landed themselves in controversy by saying or doing the wrong things. Be it Asha Parekh calling out The Kashmir Files team, asking them how much they contributed to Kashmiris from the 400 crores they’ve made from the film, or be it Kangana Ranaut dropping her opinions about everything and anything.
Ameesha Patel grabbed headlines talking about her sour relationship with Gadar director Anil Sharma while she also confessed that Kareena Kapoor Khan was asked to leave Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Many of these controversies shocked the internet, while others were resolved over time. Some of these controversies seemed totally unnecessary, while others had an impact on fans,...

Tiger Vs Pathaan’s Dhaasu Reunion To Deepika Padukone’s Draupadi – Here’s Our Wishlist For Santa Claus On Bollywood’s Behalf ( Photo Credit – Instagram; IMDb )
It has been a Merry Christmas for the newly released films Dunki and Salaar at the box office, and while everyone had their Santa lists ready, even we had our wishlist ready on behalf of Bollywood. This list included the fate of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, and others.
While we wished for big box office numbers, we also wished for better films. Overall, we wished for a better and bigger year for Cinema in 2024. But we went a little overboard with our list, and this was one greedy list we handed over to Santa Claus last night.
While we’ve asked a lot of things, we have been very specific in our demands – right from the golden number at the box...

“I have now written a book on that interview of Lataji, ‘Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet’, and it will be released on Friday, to coincide with the National Cinema Day being celebrated on October 13,” Chawla said.

New Delhi, Sep 26 (Ians) One of Hindi films’ most talented and versatile actresses – and still going strong, the exquisite and enchanting Waheeda Rehman, who caps a remarkable stint with the prestigious Dadasahab Phalke Award, carved out a niche with confident renditions of unconventional roles, including some very bold for the era – and could have spelled doom to her career.
Starting with Telugu and Tamil films in 1955 before switching over to Hindi cinema the following year, she did the usual roles expected of Hindi film actresses but also went on to play a prostitute, a gangster’s moll, a nautanki actress, a woman who walks out of a marriage without regrets, et al – but with such innate grace that she has always been a byword for refined sensibility.
Born in fairly comfortable circumstances – her father was a Deputy Commissioner – on February 3, 1939 in what was Chingalpet town of the Madras Presidency, Waheeda...

Revered Indian actor Waheeda Rehman has been accorded the Dadasaheb Phalke award, India’s highest film honor.
The award is given for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema and is named after Phalke, director of “Raja Harischandra” (1913), India’s first full-length feature, who is considered the father of Indian cinema.
Rehman, the 85-year-old grande dame of Indian cinema has worked with most of the legendary filmmakers of her country during her career and the roles she chose were in films that are considered classics in the annals of Indian cinema. She worked with Guru Dutt in “Pyaasa” (1957) and “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959), Satyajit Ray in “Abhijaan” (1962), Basu Bhattacharya in “Teesri Kasam” (1966) and Yash Chopra in “Kabhie Kabhie” (1976), among many other memorable roles.
But it is her role as Rosie in Vijay Anand’s “Guide” (1965) that Rehman remembers with the greatest fondness. “When I signed ‘Guide’ more than 50 years ago, my friends told...

Three-fourth of his 88-year-long life was spent in acting and of these, six and a half decades, over half, had Dev Anand playing the lead (romantic) role, even as his peers and even several of his leading ladies had moved on or out. In the process, Dev Anand ended up being paired against at least three generations of heroines, if not four, as he transitioned from his early days where his female co-lead was the bigger star to a time when most actresses were keen on working with him as he sauntered from success to success with that charming demeanour and the winning smile.
While most of his early heroines, say, Kamla Kotnis, who was cast against him in his debut “Hum Ek Hai” (1946), Kamini Kaushal, the heroine of his first hit “Ziddi” (1948), Khursheed Bano or Nimmi or Shakila will only be familiar to hardcore film buffs or movie historians,...
