Chris Hemsworth’s Forgotten Remake of an Iconic 80’s Action Is Quietly Climbing Global Streaming Charts
Image
Chris Hemsworth will always be famous for playing Thor in the MCU, but one year after he first suited up as the God of Thunder, he starred in a critically panned action remake that has returned to streaming charts years later. Hemsworth stars alongside Josh Peck (Drake & Josh) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) in Red Dawn, the 2012 action remake following a group of teenagers who try to save their town from a group of soldiers. Red Dawn is currently streaming on HBO Max in the United States and on Prime Video globally, where it’s trending in the top 10 in countries such as the Dominican Republic. The film earned “Rotten” scores of 15% from critics and 50% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed only $50 million globally against a $65 million budget, making it a financial flop.

In addition to Hemsworth, Hutcherson, and Peck, Red Dawn also stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan...

The Best Disaster Movies Since 2010
Image
Since the 1930s, the disaster movie genre has captured the attention of audiences worldwide with crumbling buildings, treks across epochal wastelands, and a lot of nuclear fallout. Whether working with a giant tent-pole budget or featuring a B-movie aesthetic, the disaster film is one of the most versatile genres in cinema, resulting in classic films like The Towering Inferno nearly as often as it misfires with misguided extravaganzas like 2012.

The disaster genre reached its peak popularity between the 1970s and the 1990s, but it has always succeeded in finding new and inventive ways to maximize the spectacle of humanity's destruction. Thanks to society's increase in concern over climate change and pandemics, the disaster movies of the 2010s found new and startling ways to scare people. These were the ten films that did it best.

Writers Slam WGA for Staying Silent on Israel Attacks in Open Letter: ‘We Know That Words Matter’
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.

In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.

“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

SAG-AFTRA and the DGA were among the Hollywood studios,...

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Director Lee Cronin to Helm New Line’s ‘Thaw’
Nell Fisher, Gabrielle Echols, Alyssa Sutherland, and Morgan Davies in Evil Dead Rise (2023)
With “Evil Dead Rise” earning good reviews (96% and 7.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid buzz out of its SXSW premiere, New Line wasted no time in locking down director Lee Cronin’s next feature. Next up will be an original horror film, titled “Thaw,” for which Cronin will rewrite the current draft.

The picture, originally written by Jeremy Passmore, is set years after the polar ice caps have melted with concurrent rising sea levels. “Thaw” centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. They discover an inhabitable town only to realize… well this isn’t “Waterworld” folks.

Van Toffler and David Gale of Gunpowder & Sky as well as Adam Goldworm of Aperture, who produced HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s novel “The Final Girl Support Group,” are producing.

Evil Dead Rise Director Lee Cronin Has Set Up His Next Horror Movie, And This Is Only Good News
Image
Lee Cronin was a virtually unknown filmmaker just a few years ago. Now? It seems he's poised to be one of horror's chief new guiding voices. Case in point, not only is he bringing us "Evil Dead Rise" next month, which debuted to glowing reviews out of SXSW this year (read our review here), but he has lined up his next feature that will see him reunite with Warner Bros. and New Line. And this time, he's bringing us some sea-dwelling terror.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin has been tapped to direct and rewrite an original horror flick titled "Thaw." Jeremy Passmore ("San Andreas") penned the original version of the screenplay, which was sold to Gunpowder & Sky. Now, it's in Cronin's hands, demonstrating a pretty big show of faith in the director by the brass at Warner Bros. Van Toffler, David Gale, and Adam Goldworm are on board to produce the film.

Thaw: Lee Cronin, the director of Evil Dead Rise, sets a follow-up
Lee Cronin
Director Lee Cronin is riding high off the great reviews he’s getting for Evil Dead Rise, and now it looks like he’s got another horror flick set to go at New Line, with them setting up another movie for the director called The Thaw. According to THR, the film is “set years after the polar ice caps have melted and the sea levels have risen, the story centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. Their prayers are answered with the discovery of an inhabitable town until, that is, they encounter a new nightmare living just below the water’s surface.” The writer, Jeremy Passmore, has a writing credit on New Line’s San Andreas, as well as the Red Dawn remake from 2012.

Cronin’s hiring proves that WB, which owns New Line, is high on the director following his turn at the helm of Evil Dead Rise.

Will Smith Is Developing Harlem Hellfighters Graphic Novel for The History Channel
The author of the zombie novel World War Z, Max Brooks, also wrote a great fact-based graphic novel called Harlem Hellfighters, and Will Smith is set to produce an adaptation of it for The History Channel. This is going to make a great series because it will tell an incredible story.

The story is based on the real-life U.S. Army's 369th infantry division, “an African American unit fighting in Europe during World War I. Breaking down racial barriers, the unit spent more time in combat than any other American unit, never losing a foot of ground to the enemy, or a man to capture, and went on to win countless decorations. They faced tremendous discrimination during the war and even when they returned from the front as heroes.

“What changed for the men of Harlem was being assigned to a French command whereupon the Hellfighters first experienced something unknown...

San Andreas 2 still active, but hinges on Dwayne Johnson
Simon Brew Sep 5, 2017

Alexandra Daddario reckons San Andreas 2 is still likely - but Dwayne Johnson's schedule is a problem...

We've not heard anything about the mooted San Andreas 2 now since the start of 2016. But, some 17 months after the last update, its co-star - Alexandra Daddario - has held the door ajar a little for the project.

In a new interview with Collider, that's well worth a read, she was asked if she though the sequel would happen. Bottom line: it's likely, but depends on Dwayne Johnson's schedule.

"If I had to bet money on it, I’d say yes", she told the site, "but it’s still in the pre-production stage of putting it together. You never know with Dwayne Johnson’s schedule. He’s a very busy man. But that movie did very well, and it did very well overseas, so I can see them...

The Astro Boy Movie Just Took A Big Step Forward
Freddie Highmore in Astro Boy (2009)
About a year ago we got word that a live-action film adaptation of the popular Astro Boy comic was being planned. Now, the project has finally added some new players to get it done. A story from The Hollywood Reporter says that writers have been attached to the project. Writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore, who worked on San Andreas, will be penning the script.  Astro Boy is a Japanese manga series created by Osamu Tezuka which ran from 1952 until 1968. The science fiction story is set in the future, in a time when robots and humans co-exist. The titular character is an android created by the head of the Ministry of Science, Dr. Tenma. The doctor creates Astro as a replacement for his dead son Tobio, who perished in a car accident. When Dr. Tenma realizes that Astro won.t be able to replace his son, he rejects him and...

'Astro Boy' Headed to New Line, Live-Action Tent-Pole Feature in the Works
The character of Astro Boy may be heading to New Line Cinema, THR is reporting. What's more is that the company has tapped San Andreas writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore to write a live-action version of the script. While the manga and anime series was definitely aimed more towards kids back when it came out decades ago, this film will be created as a four-quadrant adventure film, meaning it'll be reworked to appeal to all ages, young and old. As such, they are likely to give the series more an of edgy tone than its creator originally intended, perhaps in the vein of a Transformers and G.I. Joe.

While you may not recognize the character name, chances are you recognize the look of the character himself. Created by legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka--who was heavily influenced by Walt Disney--Astro Boy definitely has the look of an old-school Disney character.

San Andreas Scribes Fire Up Live-Action Astro Boy Film At New Line
Osamu Tezuka’s beloved anime character Astro Boy looks set for a new lease of life at New Line.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has appointed San Andreas scribes Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore to pen a treatment for a new live-action feature based on the popular manga series. Negotiations are still underway for Warner to acquire the IP rights, but if they do so, the deal would see Animal Logic Entertainment, Ranger 7 Films and Japanese firm Tezuka Productions produce an eventual feature film.

News of a live-action Astro Boy movie taking flight first surfaced more than a year ago, when those involved were still on the hunt for writers to steer the iconic 50s manga to the big screen. With Fabrizio and Passmore now on board, THR notes that New Line is pitching the project as a four-quadrant adventure movie, essentially denoting that Astro Boy‘s revival...

"Andreas" Scribes Pen Live-Action "Astro Boy"
New Line is in negotiations to get behind a live-action "Astro Boy" film with "San Andreas" scribes Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore onboard to pen the script.

Animal Logic ("The Lego Movie"), Ranger 7 Films and Tezuka Prods. announced over a year ago that they were developing the project based on the classic 1980s anime and 1950s manga series. Zareh Nalbandian is slated to produce the film which is aiming to be a four-quadrant adventure film.

The story follows a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of his dead son. Though a cartoon, the series famously dealt with some serious and very dark themes.

The feature follows in the wake of a kiddie-centric $65 million CG-animated film released by Imagi in 2009 which flopped badly, grossing just $40 million worldwide.

Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Paul Giamatti, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson, Will Yun Lee | Written by Carlton Cuse, Andre Fabrizio, Jeremy Passmore | Directed by Brad Peyton

If there was ever a genre of movie that benefited from advances in computer generated effects, it has to be the disaster movie. What better way to destroy cities than to take the real locations then virtually tear them apart?

In San Andreas, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department. When a huge earthquake rips its way up the San Andreas fault and his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) finds herself trapped in San Francisco, Ray and his estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino) must save her before an even bigger impending earthquake rips the city apart.

While most of the marketing for San Andreas quite rightly puts the...

Film Review: ‘San Andreas’ Loads Its Story with Too Many Faults
Chicago – The best way, perhaps the only way, to enjoy the disaster movie “San Andreas” is to check your brain at the door, or better yet leave it at home for safekeeping. Bringing new meaning to the term mindless entertainment, “San Andreas” dares its audience to turn off their minds, and enjoy the ride.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a helicopter pilot and military vet conducting search and rescues in Los Angeles. He’s also a soon to be divorced dad suffering with a sense of loss over a deceased daughter he couldn’t save. Meanwhile, estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino) has moved in with an insanely rich new boyfriend Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd), just as their daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) is heading off to school. And just as his world seems to be crumbling around him, cue the earthquake that sends the world (at least L.A. and San Francisco) crumbling around him.

Film Review: Terribly Scripted ‘San Andreas’ With Dwayne Johnson a Heartless Special Effects Spectacle
Chicago – When the story is as weak as the film’s fault lines and the character development never develops, the problem with blowing $100 million mostly on special effects is all you’re left with is unintelligent disaster porn.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Aside from the visual spectacle, “San Andreas” fails fantastically to be anything remotely smart. It’s not even a show piece for Dwayne Johnson’s attempt at rebranding himself into a legitimate, dramatic actor. And very little about it is surprising, new or anything most of us couldn’t write in our sleep.

While “San Andreas” is trying to engage our sense of survival, it doesn’t play to an everyday fear that most of us ever experience. At least “Deep Impact,” “Armageddon” and the like had stories that I can actually remember. This one will soon be forgotten.

I actually started to count the amount of cheesy one-liners that caused...

“San Andreas” continues to showcase Dwayne Johnson as a top tier action hero
We have more of almost everything at the movies these days, with one glaring exception: we don’t have nearly as many action heroes as we used to. Sure, there are plenty of action films opening with stars or up and comers in leading roles, saving the day, but very few true “action heroes”. One notable modern exception is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a certified A-list star of the action genre. He’s come a long way from just being The Rock, either in wrestling or his first on screen roles, but even removed from that, he’s a charismatic screen presence that holds the action hero title these days with aplomb. This week, he further cements his status with the disaster movie San Andreas. In San Andreas, we get west coast spin on the disaster movie, leaving New York City alone for a moment to focus in on California.

‘Vice’ is a sin best left ignored
Vice

Written by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore

Directed by Brian A. Mills

USA, 2015

At this point of his career, Bruce Willis’ choices in parts are a crap shoot. While 50% of the films he makes are legitimately great (Looper and Moonrise Kingdom), the other half go straight to video and die. This latest project is a reminder that along with half-baked horror, the death knell of January is filled to the brim with bad actioners seeking a home.

With a decent cast in Willis and Thomas Jane, Vice might have been able to salvage something worth watching out of this mess, but there is no effort on the screen at all. The blame lays entirely at the feet of writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore and director Brian A. Miller, who worked with Willis previously on The Prince and shouldn’t have been given the chance to work again. The...

Review: 'Vice' Starring Bruce Willis, Ambyr Childers & Thomas Jane
The fact that “Vice” is a straight-to-video rip-off of “Westworld” should become painfully obvious from reading the film’s IMDb logline alone. However, the real tragedy is that this B-movie, sci-fi/action schlockfest, which also shamelessly steals ideas, and sometimes entire sequences, from “Blade Runner,” “Robocop,” “Groundhog's Day,” “The Matrix,” and “Total Recall” to name just a few, actually contains a couple of semi-interesting hard science-fiction ideas. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore, who wrote the upcoming Dwayne Johnson disaster pic “San Andreas,” have no clue how to exploit them beyond serving as clunky placeholders before kickstarting a dumb chase picture. The story takes place in and around an entertainment complex called Vice, where people can satisfy their most depraved violent and/or sexual urges via robots made up mostly of organic tissue, making them almost indistinguishable from humans. During an expository sequence so...

Clip From Bruce Willis’ Action Thriller Vice
A clip has been released for Bruce Willis’ upcoming sci-fi action film Vice, which also stars Thomas Jane. The movie looks like it has the potential to be really good, but I'm the kind of guy that enjoys the kinds of films Willis makes. It’s also great to see Jane in another big screen feature.

Julian Michaels (Willis) has designed the ultimate resort: Vice, where anything goes and the customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look, think and feel like humans. When an artificial (Childers) becomes self-aware and escapes, she finds herself caught in the crossfire between Julian's mercenaries and a cop (Jane) who is hell-bent on shutting down Vice, and stopping the violence once and for all.

The film was directed by Brian A. Miller from a script that was written by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore. Lionsgate will release the R-rated film...

A mechanic’s daughter goes missing in New Orleans. As he searches for her, he is drawn back into his former life as an assassin he has tried so hard to escape. Things get worse as an old rival learns of his return and puts into motion a series of events which will put the Mechanic and more importantly his daughter in a world of danger and violence.

What’s that? A guy’s daughter has been Taken? He has a certain set of skills and won’t let anyone stop him from finding her? He is a super badass? *Eyes narrow* Hmm. This all seems a little familiar. Oh wait,...

Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2015 Preview Includes New Images From The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And Pan
For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.

Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.

Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

Bruce Willis Gets Chatty In First Clip From Sci-Fi Thriller Vice
Bruce Willis might have not had a huge box office hit in a while, but he’s jumping on one of the most popular genre bandwagons – sci-fi – for his next outing. Directed by Brian A. Miller, Vice is a dark, morally-askew mix of technological craziness and mankind’s incessant greed. Sounds terrific, right?

Liberally nabbing parts from Michael Crichton’s Westworld and George Lucas’ Thx-1138, Vice hones in on the hedonistic desires of humans. Luckily for a wealthy few, their desires are brought to reality at Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis) adult resort, Vice. Populated by artificial residents – androids – they provide the perfect ‘real’ experience to paying customers. Alas, something goes awry, as it transpires that one of the ‘bots retains her memories after her evening data wipe.

In the film’s first trailer, the experiences of the ‘bot in question, Kelly, lead her to Thomas Jane’s cop who is...

Dwayne Johnson Stars in First San Andreas Trailer
Warner Bros. Pictures has released the brand new trailer for next summer’s disaster-suspense film San Andreas.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson and Paul Giamatti.

Shot on location in The Gold Coast and Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and in Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Andreas is slated to open in theatres in both 3D and 2D format on Friday, May 29, 2015.

This isn’t the first film where Southern California has been destroyed on the silver screen. San Francisco (1936) is based on the April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Directed by Woody Van Dyke, the drama stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, and Spencer Tracy.

Airport originated the 1970s disaster film genre and audiences were deluged with a series of movies including the original Earthquake (1974). These films always included a huge cast, where many of the actors usually perished by the climax.

Dwayne Johnson vs an Earthquake in ‘San Andreas’
Action thriller San Andreas comes from New Line Cinema and Village Roadshow Pictures and reunites Dwayne Johnson with director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, following their collaboration on the hit family movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The film’s screenplay comes from Nash Bridges’ creator Carlton Cuse, from a story by Andre Fabrizio & Jeremy Passmore.

Dwayne Johnson in Surprisingly Somber 'San Andreas' First Trailer
"I cannot emphasize this enough. You need to get out, and I mean now." California crumbles in the first teaser trailer for San Andreas, the earthquake action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson. Now obviously a disaster of this scale wouldn't be something to be excited about, but we're surprised that a disaster flick like this paints such a somber portrait of the movie, especially since it's coming from director Brad Peyton of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. But it's actually a little refreshing to have a teaser trailer that features massive destruction, and doesn't just go for the big, fun action angle. But will the movie be good? Watch! Here's the first trailer for Brad Peyton's San Andreas from Warner Bros. Pictures: San Andreas is directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) and written by Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Carlton Cuse (executive producer and writer...

Watch the Trailer for Vice, Starring Thomas Jane and Bruce Willis
Blending the “anything goes” artificial intelligence aspect of Michael Crichton’s Westworld with the android self-awareness of I, Robot, Vice, an upcoming sci-fi film from Lionsgate, takes viewers to a place where fantasies can become realities without any consequences, no matter how violent or depraved the actions. The film’s official trailer features a long-haired Thomas Jane hell-bent on shutting down the Vice resort.

“Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis) has designed the ultimate resort: Vice, where anything goes and the customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look, think and feel like humans. ‘Vice’ Trailer: Welcome To The Resort Where Fantasies Come True, Then Lots Of Bad Stuff Happens
Bruce Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers in Vice (2015)
Imagine a vacation spot where visitors can play out their wildest, anything-goes fantasies with artificial inhabitants that look, think and feel like humans. What could possibly go wrong? In Lionsgate’s sci-fi actioner Vice, Bruce Willis has built just such a place. But there’s that one nagging drawback to artificial intelligence: One of the things (played by human Ambyr Childers) becomes self-aware and high-tails it outta there. This pits Willis and his minions against a cop (Thomas Jane) who is out to shut down the resort and stop the madness once and for all. Brian A. Miller directed the pic from a script by Andre Fabrizio & Jeremy Passmore. The Emmett Furla Oasis Films production in association with Aperture Entertainment opens January 16 day-and-date in theaters and VOD.

Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane Hunt Down Angry Robot in Vice Trailer
We have the first trailer for Bruce Willis' upcoming sci-fi action thriller, Vice, for you to check out. Willis plays the head of a resort where people can use artificial inhabitants to live out their darkest fantasies. Things get out of hand when one of the robots decides not to take it anymore. It looks like it could be a cool flick — I definitely like what I see in the trailer. The film also stars Thomas Jane, Ambyr Childers, Johnathon Schaech, Bryan Greenberg, Charlotte Kirk, and Tyler J. Olson. Here's the synopsis:

Check Out These Five Exclusive New Images From The Prince
In the action genre, there are few stars whose mere presence packs as powerful a punch as Bruce Willis. And while of course none of us here at We Got This Covered could ever claim to have grown tired of seeing the icon kick ass, this summer’s The Prince is definitely more interesting than most action fare the actor has been involved with lately – because it casts him not as the put-upon hero, but as a cold-hearted, dastardly assassin.

Today, We Got This Covered is thrilled to exclusively five new images from the actioner, highlighting Willis along with stars Jason Patric and John Cusack. You can check them out below.

In The Prince, Patric plays a retired assassin who gets drawn back into his old life when his teenage daughter (Gia Mantegna) is kidnapped. After recruiting an old ally (Cusack) and heading into enemy territory, he realizes that confronting...

Bruce Willis Doesn't Forgive Jason Patric in New 'The Prince' Trailer
"I'm not gonna forgive you. Only God forgives." Just in case the first trailer for the action thriller called The Prince didn't convince you that this was not going to be a good movie, a second trailer has arrived, showing a little more of the story. Jason Patric plays a former assassin and father who finds his daughter in danger when a rival assassin (Bruce Willis) kidnaps her in order to get back at him for some wrong done in the past. The only interesting aspect of the film is Willis as the bad guy, but he really seems to be phoning this one in. And again, we're not very sure what John Cusack is doing here, but whatever. Watch? Here's the new trailer for Brian A. Miller's The Prince from Collider: The Prince is directed by Brian A. Miller (The Outsider, Officer Down and Caught in the Crossfire) written...
