A Subhash K Jha Review – “A Nice Indian Boy, When Mother Knows Best”
Image
In that recent Tamil film Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai, when the daughter brings her same-sex lover home for dinner, the mother (Rohini) loses all control.

The mother in A Nice Indian Boy, Megha, played with warmth, curiosity, dread, and acceptance by Zarna Garg, is much more accommodating. I won’t say she is a true liberal, although Megha would like to think she is. When her son Naveen (Karan Soni) brings home his boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff), Mom Megha welcomes him as she ought to: a liberal Indian mom who wants only her son to be happy.

Of course, in actuality, life’s decisions are not that simply laid out on the table. It is this struggle to do the right thing which makes Megha one of the most special mothers I’ve seen on screen in recent times.

Unlike other conservative mothers who don’t even put on a show of acceptance,...

A Nice Indian Boy is charming, funny, deeply emotional, and oh so full of love
Image
The critically acclaimed and audience applauded, A Nice Indian Boy is available to stream now and we say “Go Click Play Now”. Directed by Roshan Sethi, the film was written by Eric Randall, based on the play by Madhuri Shekar. A Nice Indian Boy features incredible performances by Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff. The film also boasts an outstanding supporting cast, including Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel, Peter S. Kim, and Sas Goldberg.

Our story begins with a meet-cute that turns, as love stories are wont to do, into a beautiful journey, at times fraught with tension, but also full of heart, all reaching for a happily ever after (Hea). Naveen is a self-effacing, soft-spoken doctor with a boisterous mother, Megha, seemingly perfect sister, Arundhathi, and quiet father, Archit. The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice. Then Naveen...

Marvel Insider Debunks Bollywood Mega-Star’s MCU Debut Rumor
Image
On April 28th, a massive chunk of the Marvel fandom was going nuts on Twitter—all thanks to a few simple updates. You could call them rumors. A few others would tell you it’s foreshadowing. Nobody knows if it’s the truth, but according to reports, the MCU might have already picked out its next big Indian superstar.

And if the bearings are true, that man just might be the definitive ‘King of Bollywood’ himself — Shah Rukh Khan. But only if the bearings could be true.

A silent MCU footprint for the Baadshah of Bollywood? Shah Rukh Khan as the titular hero in the 2023 movie Pathaan | Credits: Yrf

It started with a single image. A couple of days ago, news scoop account @MarvelLeaks22 posted a photo of Shah Rukh Khan, captioning it with the ‘eyes’ emoji on X. That single tweet would be more than enough to break the internet.

Image
Shah Rukh Khan Might Join Marvel Studios (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The Bollywood icon, Shah Rukh Khan, famous for his international appeal, is now being associated with none other than Marvel Studios. Though not officially confirmed, the news has already sparked wild excitement among fans across the globe.

The speculation started after a popular scooper handle on X (formerly Twitter), @MarvelLeaks22, shared an intriguing update. The post reads, “News/Rumor: Shah Rukh Khan ( Srk ) is Rumored to be in early talks with Marvel Studios for a role in a future project ( Not Avengers Doomsday ).” With just that hint, Srk fans and Marvel lovers lit up the internet with speculation and excitement.

Why Srk + Marvel Sounds Like a Perfect Match

While this may feel sudden, the Shah Rukh-Marvel connection has actually been bubbling for a while. Earlier this year, Captain America actor Anthony Mackie openly praised Srk (Via India Today), calling...

A Nice Indian Boy: Karan Soni & Roshan Sethi On Casting Eternals' Harish Patel, Srk Moment, & More (Exclusive)
Image
With A Nice Indian Boy now playing in theaters, we were recently granted an exclusive opportunity to sit down with director Roshan Sethi and his leading man Karan Soni (Deadpool & Wolverine; Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; Miracle Workers) to talk about the critically acclaimed family wedding comedy.

The real-life couple and frequent collaborators walk me through turning this story into a full-length feature film, crafting authentic Indian American characters, casting Jonathan Groff, working with the incomparable Harish Patel and Zarna Garg, and a whole lot more!

Plus, Roshan also shares a hilarious story of his first time seeing Karan on screen!

The film's synopsis reads, "When Naveen (Karan Soni), a soft spoken doctor, finally brings his charming white-artist boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family, misunderstandings and emotional revelations put everyone on edge. Despite facing uncomfortable truths about their own ideas of love and marriage, the...

A Nice Indian Boy Stars Sunita Mani & Zarna Garg On Their Authentic New Karan Soni Family Comedy (Exclusive)
Image
We were recently granted an opportunity to sit down with the stars of Roshan Sethi's critically acclaimed new film A Nice Indian Boy, and in the first half of our two interviews, we caught up with Sunita Mani and comedian-turned-actress Zarna Garg, who makes her film debut with this fun-filled family wedding comedy.

In our breezy conversation, the duo talk me through some of the most fun aspects of making this film, including working with Eternals scene-stealer Harish Patel, and why this feature feels far more authentic than other Indian-American comedies.

The film's synopsis reads, "When Naveen (Karan Soni), a soft spoken doctor, finally brings his charming white-artist boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family, misunderstandings and emotional revelations put everyone on edge. Despite facing uncomfortable truths about their own ideas of love and marriage, the family attempts to plan the big Indian wedding of Naveen and Jay’s dreams.

“It’s Not a Coming-Out Story”: A Nice Indian Boy co-stars Sunita Mani and Zarna Garg talk the Differences of Stand-up Comedy and Filmmaking and the Bond of Being Indian-Americans (Interview)
Image
After its March 2024 debut at South by Southwest, Jonathan Groff and Karan Soni’s gay rom-com A Nice Indian Boy has finally found its release.

We at FandomWire spoke with co-stars Sunita Mani and Zarna Garg about how the central conflict was created, how the cast bonded before filming, and why this is a different type of rom-com.

A Nice Indian Boy Interview Courtesy of Levantine Films – Sunita Mani as Arundhathi Gavaskar in A Nice Indian Boy RelatedA Nice Indian Boy Review — Rom-Com Brings Fresh Perspective and Joy

FandomWire: Sunita, your character is fascinating because she has this sense of progressiveness as a younger woman, but at the same time, she resists change and becomes a source of conflict. How did you approach those two seemingly contradictory traits, and how did you work to bring them out in your performance?

Sunita Mani: Arundhathi is 100% a walking contradiction. She has this “Rage Against the Machine” attitude,...

Theatrical Release Pace Picks Up As Curtain Falls On CinemaCon & Dour First Quarter – Specialty Preview
Image
The pace is picking up with studio wide release A Minecraft Movie booming and plenty of indie fare to fill out behind from Neon’s Hell of a Summer and IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America to Fathom’s next installment of The Chosen and expansions of The Friend from Bleecker Street and Gkids’ re-release of Princess Mononoke.

CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners and studios, wrapped last night in Las Vegas. Exhibitors’ tempers were strained by a sour first quarter at the box office and there was an explosion of talk around longer theatrical windows which will for sure remain an ongoing conversation. That said, Q1 is behind us so here’s to hoping for a sustained period of more movies — many highlighted in Vegas — and higher-grossing movies to lift all boats.

Neon opens Hell Of A Summer on 1,255 screens after Thursday previews and early shows took in $215k.

A Nice Indian Boy Review — Rom-Com Brings Fresh Perspective and Joy
Image
Few movie scenes this year are as joyous as the central gay wedding in Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy. It comes after weeks of turmoil that Karan Soni’s Naveen faces after falling in love with a white man (Jonathan Groff) and the way his traditional Indian family reacts to it all. The film serves as a unique twist on a familiar classic, driven by an incredible performance from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s Soni.

A Nice Indian Boy Review

Naveen is a thirty-something gay man feeling lost in his relationship troubles while everybody seems to have it together. It’s not until a chance encounter while praying that he runs into Jay (Groff) that he feels like he’s finally found a partner worth fighting for. After bringing him home to his parents, things quickly fall apart.

The thing is, his family doesn’t seem to...

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: This Charming Interracial Rom-Com Packs a Bollywood Twist
Image
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Wayfarer Studios releases “A Nice Indian Boy” in select theaters Friday, April 4.

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.

Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.

This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni...

‘A Nice Indian Boy’: Release Date, Cast, Story, and All You Need to Know
Image
Movies have always had a way of connecting people and communities, as well as challenging the typical norms of society. While everyone loves a classic rom-com, things go up a notch when a movie tries to break barriers by telling stories that, in one way or another, push against societal taboos, especially when it comes to love, acceptance, and identity.

Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy is such a movie that promises to bring a refreshing take on romance by exploring a same-sex relationship, that too with a mix of traditional Indian family values. With changing times, more and more filmmakers have embraced such storylines.

Queer Rom-Com ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ From Producer Justin Baldoni Debuts First Trailer
Harish Patel, Zarna Garg, Jonathan Groff, Karan Soni, and Sunita Mani in A Nice Indian Boy (2024)
A Nice Indian Boy has released its first trailer that stars Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff ahead of its theatrical release next month.

Director Roshan Sethi’s romantic-comedy feature hits theaters April 4 from Blue Harbor Entertainment. Hailing from Levantine Films and Wayfarer Studios, the movie also stars Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel, Peter S. Kim and Sas Goldberg.

A Nice Indian Boy centers on Naveen (Soni), an introverted doctor grappling with introducing his artist boyfriend, Jay (Groff), to his traditional Indian parents amid the possibility of planning a big wedding.

“My parents are super liberal,” Soni says in the trailer. “Just don’t bring up drinking or sex — and no displays of physical affection.”

Later, Groff reflects on their romantic path. “I think a lot of people are a little embarrassed by the bigness of love,” he says. “The family, the wedding — it’s about everybody together.”

Sethi helmed...

A Nice Indian Boy Trailer: Justin Baldoni & Wayfarer Studios’ Next Film Features This Major Deadpool Star In The Lead Role
Image
Which Deadpool Star Is Featured In Justin Baldoni’s A Nice Indian Boy? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Justin Baldoni, the multihyphenate filmmaker behind It Ends With Us, is back with a new film titled A Nice Indian Boy. The actor-director remains ensnared in a legal maelstrom since Blake Lively leveled accusations of s*xual harassment and more against him — a controversy that swelled when The New York Times’ exposé turned the cinema realm against him.

Baldoni countered these claims with defamation suits against The Times and Lively and Ryan Reynolds, striving to enunciate his side of the story. He alleges a couple of extortion, bullying, and other misconduct, maintaining that their coercion forced his Wayfarer Studios to capitulate to the Colleen Hoover adaptation, incurring steep losses in ventures as deals soured.

Yet not all is grim for the Jane the Virgin alum! A Nice India Boy, a long-awaited project under his production banner,...

From director Roshan Sethi, the film is a queer romance about a boy who brings his soon-to-be-husband back to meet his very traditional family. And they even got The hunk Jonathan Groff to play Jay the fiance. When Naveen brings his new fiancé Jay home to meet his traditional Indian family, they must contend with accepting his white-orphan-artist boyfriend and helping them plan the Indian wedding of their dreams. A Nice Indian Boy (2024) ‘Palm Springs Film Festival’ Movie Review: Roshan Sethi’s Queer Romcom is One of the Year’s Warmest, Most Disarming Films
Roshan Sethi
Indian marriages go beyond individual assertions of love to include the jostling familial structures of acceptance and refusal. Then there’s the pervasive influence of Bollywood. Bollywood and Indian culture are so enmeshed the two invariably cast themselves against identity and what celebration of oneself may resemble. The yarn of resistance to private desire gets scrambled furthermore once queerness enters the fold. Roshan Sethi’s new film, “A Nice Indian Boy,” unravels this twine, weaving between the modest and spectacular.

Naveen has almost reclined into accepting he, being gay, may never get to have his own big, fat Indian wedding. He’s lonely, terribly tongue-tied at the slightest sight of any probable romantic connection. He has built all these guardrails around him, nervous to admit his desire. As reserved as he is about expressing his feelings, a photographer who instantly captures his heart, Jay is unabashed in his declarations. The...

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: Bollywood Dreams Come True In an Appealing Indian American Romcom
Image
The prize catch of the title isn’t exactly who you might expect in “A Nice Indian Boy,” a romantic comedy that brings a welcome queer angle to that substantial subgenre of love stories tangled up in Indian social mores and cross-generational family politics. In many such films, Naveen (Karan Soni) would be the most desirable of matches for a female protagonist: good-looking, well-spoken and a working doctor. That he’s gay puts him in the less traditionally masculine role of the one seeking a suitor; that his “nice Indian boy” is in fact Jay (Jonathan Groff), a white man raised in Naveen’s culture, is the more complicating factor in director Roshan Sethi’s bright, big-hearted if overly tidy third feature.

Still, Sethi and screenwriters Eric Randall — adapting a stage play by Madhuri Shekar — aren’t out to subvert every trope and tradition in the book. From its meet-cute...

‘Andaz Apna Apna’: The Best Bollywood (Midnight?) Movie the West Has Never Heard About
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: A Star-Studded Cult Comedy That Doesn’t Fit in Any Bollywood Box

The year was 2000. The place: A local South Asian grocery store in suburban Michigan. The occasion: Friday night, baby, the night for browsing the store’s DVD library for a rental, and my father’s pick for the week — “Andaz Apna Apna.”

I don’t think Rajkumar Santoshi’s seminal comedy was made with a nine-year-old American girl in mind, but I ate the film up. It’s not overtly childish or adult, but boasts the kind...

A Nice Indian Boy Team Talks Real-Life Rom-Coms, Jonathan Groff, And Deadpool & Wolverine [SXSW]
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Romance and family drama collide in A Nice Indian Boy as Naveen navigates love, acceptance, and self-discovery. The film showcases the importance of acceptance and love within a traditional Indian family, all while delivering heart and humor. Real-life partners Roshan Sethi and Karan Soni bring a personal touch to the story, creating an emotional and relatable film experience.

Romance is not dead, and A Nice Indian Boy is here to prove it. The film, directed by Roshan Sethi and starring his real-life partner Karan Soni (Deadpool), is a rom-com with a whole lot of family drama thrown into the mix thanks to a multifaceted screenplay by Eric Randall and the backbone of Madhuri Shekar's original play. The story centers on an uptight doctor named Naveen (Soni) who falls for a more free-spirited photographer named Jay (Hamilton's Jonathan Groff) after they...

A Nice Indian Boy Review: Karan Soni & Jonathan Groff Are Perfect Together In Heartfelt Rom-Com
Image
Naveen & Jay's touching romance is the heart of A Nice Indian Boy. Karan Soni & Jonathan Groff's chemistry shines. The family dynamic adds depth and emotion to A Nice Indian Boy.

There are many romantic comedies released that are neither romantic or funny. It’s a difficult balance to maintain, with the comedy often overpowering any genuine romance, as filmmakers opt for flimsy or superficial pairings. I had that on my mind when I walked into A Nice Indian Boy, a film that perfectly blends romance and comedy and throws in culture and a whole lot of heart to go with it. Karan Soni and Hamilton's Jonathan Groff are pitch-perfect together, and the obstacles they face — internal and family-related — are handled with care and love.

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff in a Winning Gay Rom-Com
Image
Walking out of the theater after Ddlj, Jay (Jonathan Groff) launches into a defense of the over-the-top emotionality of Bollywood romances. “I think we’re all embarrassed by the bigness of love,” he declares. His date, Naveen (Karan Soni), is intrigued but skeptical, later recounting the interaction to his work bestie (Peter S. Kim) as a bit weird and kind of corny.

Because A Nice Indian Boy is a rom-com, though, it’s practically a given that Naveen will come around by the end. The film delights in public displays and grand gestures, such that it opens and closes on a pair of weddings. But its real strength lies in its sensitivity toward the messy feelings, smaller acts, and platonic and familial bonds that underlie those epic shows of romance. By the end, even those who don’t fancy themselves the sentimental type — as Naveen doesn’t, and I don...

Marvel’s Kevin Feige Teases MCU Return for Eternals Star Harry Styles

Kevin Feige hints at the return of Harry Styles to the MCU as Starfox/Eros, with both sides waiting for the right time. Feige discusses the possibility of Eros and Pip appearing again, suggesting they could introduce other supernatural characters like Ghost Rider. Marvel's Kevin Feige recently teased the return of Harry Styles to the MCU following his post-credits cameo appearance as Starfox/Eros in Eternals. I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character. That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love?...

Harry Styles ‘Eternals’ Character Starfox Gets His Own Poster From Marvel Studios
Image
Attention, bedroom walls of those 12 and under: you’re about to be joined by a new poster.

Marvel Studios today released a poster for the Harry Styles “Starfox” character from the new Eternals film. It’s the first officially sanctioned piece about his casting, which was one of the big surprises in the movie.

Styles briefly stepped into the MCU in the first of two bonus scenes that air after the credits.

The bonus post-credit scene shows Eros and Pip the Troll (voiced by Patton Oswalt) appearing before Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), who are left confused and need assistance after Arishem the Judge (David Kaye) takes Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) to reckon for their actions.

Eternals tells the story of an immortal alien race that, after thousands of years, comes out of hiding to protect Earth from their evil counterparts,...

‘Eternals’ Review
Image
Stars: Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Lauren Ridloff, Lia McHugh, Harish Patel | Written by Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, Kaz Firpo | Directed by Chloé Zhao

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao directs the latest Marvel superhero adventure, Eternals, which attempts to make a few subtle-but-important shifts in the MCU. As such, it’s largely successful, though the standard Marvel formula is nigh-on indomitable and remains firmly in place.

Based on characters and concepts created by Jack Kirby in 1974, Eternals posits that alien beings called Celestials created a race of immortal, super-powered humanoids called Eternals and sent them to Earth 7,000 years ago, in order to protect humanity from invading alien monsters known as Deviants. The Eternals extinguished the last of the Deviants some 500 years ago, so it’s understandably concerning when one of them attacks Sersi (Gemma Chan) in present-day London.

Film Review: 'Eternals' isn't the Hero Film We Deserve, But the One We Need Right Now
Chicago – At some point, everything evolves. This isn’t something that’s exclusive to Pokemon, but a process that all of us have undergone to get to where we are. Evolution is always gradual, only made noticeable to us in retrospect. Are you exactly the same person that you were 10 years ago? Hopefully not.

There will come a point when we look back at Eternals with much more generous eyes and realize that not only is this a good film, but a necessary one.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

I won’t say that this comic book property is an obscure one because I don’t want any of the ire from fanboys yelling reasons at me for why this property is so well-known. What I will say is that it is not one I’m at all familiar with, at least not to the caliber of some of Marvel’s other juggernauts like Iron-Man,...

‘Eternals’ Director Chloé Zhao Says Harry Styles Has Been On Her Radar Since ‘Dunkirk’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains details from Disney/Marvel’s Eternals.

Eternals director Chloé Zhao never considered casting anyone other than Harry Styles to portray Thanos’ brother Eros in a bonus scene from the Disney/Marvel film, which hit US theaters on Thursday. All she needed to make that dream a reality was for Marvel boss Kevin Feige and the musician-actor to agree.

Styles steps into the MCU as the superhero Starfox in the first of two bonus scenes that air after the credits.

Angelina Jolie Smashes Salma Hayek's Face Into Cake During 55th Birthday Celebration
Image
Salma Hayek had family and friends, including Angelina Jolie, celebrate her 55th trip around the sun. Hayek acquainted Jolie with the Mexican Mordida, the Mexican Bite. Watch Angelina and company help Selma ring in another year with this clip posted by Hayek, captioned "My brother @hayekstudio and me trying to teach Angie how to do the mexican mordida @angelinajolie Mi hermano sami y yo enseñandole a #anjelinajolie como se hace la mordida!"

Fans wished Salma Hayek a Happy Birthday and Feliz Cumpleaños, but my favorite was the gibes Questlove endured by not knowing Angelina Jolie was on Instagram. The questions about the rock he is living under were justified, as Angelina Jolie made international news on August 21, 2021 by joining the social media platform to use her voice to give support and shine a spotlight on the people of Afghanistan. Her first post was captioned, "This is a letter I was...

Disney Only Has Three Weeks to Decide If Marvel's Eternals Gets Delayed Yet Again
Image
It appears that Disney reportedly only has three weeks left to make a decision on whether the upcoming Marvel film Eternals will remain as a theatrical exclusive, or if it will instead receive a hybrid release. Just recently the new report that came from Yahoo, has revealed that Disney still has not made a final decision. Disney and Marvel Studios are reportedly considering the same hybrid release as Black Widow back in July. Apparently, this decision could finally be made depending on the box office performance for Shang-Chi. The recently released film, Shang-Chi, is currently tracking to break box office records over this coming Labor Day weekend.

Disney of course may also have its own reasons on why they are considering releasing Marvel's Eternals on Disney+. One of these reasons are due to the rising cases of the Delta variant that is currently continuing to spread around the United States.

Why Marvel Is Keeping Eternals Intentionally Vague
Image
While the first trailer for Marvel's Eternals racked up some huge viewing figures, proving that the MCU shows no signs of slowing down, fans were quick to point out how close the cards were being kept to the studio's chest. While the footage did give us glimpses of Marvel's newest heroes, the plot and various other crucial details were left refreshingly vague. Walt Disney Studios' head of marketing, Asad Ayaz, has now discussed why they felt this was the best approach.

"If you saw the Eternals teaser, it really gave nothing away. It's just an introduction to the characters and tone. It was a very, very early tease. We have so much more to do on that. We will be very judicious because we do have other films and shows prior to Eternals hitting. And Eternals is such a special movie with all-new characters, and we have two Marvel movies prior to that.

Salma Hayek Explains Why Eternals Cast Diversity Doesn't Feel Forced
Image
The MCU has been making some significant strides in the matter of diversity and representation when it comes to its roster of superheroes. The upcoming MCU film Eternals is going to go even further in this department, featuring a group of superbeings of different ethnicities and backgrounds, played by Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Harish Patel, Barry Keoghan, Mia Dong-seok, Richard Madden and Kit Harington. Salma Hayek will play the role of the superhero Ajak in the movie. In an interview with Variety, Hayek expressed her enthusiasm for the diversity on display in Eternals.

"I think a lot of people are going to feel seen and that's important and that's what matters. It's not diverse for the sake of being diverse. It's the way [director Chloé Zhao] chose every single one of us that really creates a family for the purpose of the Eternals. For the purpose of the film.

Salma Hayek on the Diverse Cast of ‘Eternals’: ‘A Lot of People Are Going to Feel Seen’
Image
It’s not every day that a Latina woman in her 50s stars in a Marvel movie. It’s something that director Chloé Zhao was very aware of when she cast 54-year-old Salma Hayek to play Ajak in the upcoming “Eternals.”

“Ageism in Hollywood is a very concerning issue that we must stand against as artists,” Zhao tells Variety. “Aging is a beautiful part of life that should be celebrated. It’s really an honor for us to have Salma to lead the ‘Eternals’ family. I can’t take all the credits. When [executive producer] Nate Moore first showed me the treatment, which he worked on with [writers] Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo, I was impressed with the age diversity of the characters they put together, and it was a big part of what got me really excited about ‘Eternals.’”

While audiences have only seen a glimpse of Hayek in character, she says...

‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ Trailer: Nathalie Emmanuel Lives, and So Does the Rom-Com
Nathalie Emmanuel
When Missandei plummeted from that wall during the final season of “Game of Thrones,” audiences didn’t know she’d be resurrected so quickly — and in the form of a romantic comedy on Hulu. If only Daenerys had known her friend would be back so soon, and leading her very own Mindy Kaling show, maybe the finale of “Game of Thrones” would have turned out better for everyone.

The actress is now flexing her comedy chops in a series based on the classic 1994 romantic comedy starring Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant, “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Mike Newell, the original follows a group of clever friends over five social occasions as one reluctant couple falls in love.

This latest iteration was created by Kaling with Matt Warburton, her executive producer on “The Mindy Project” and a longtime writer/Ep on “The Simpsons.” Where...
