Earlier this year, we heard that A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder was working on a 4K remaster of his movie. Now that Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema have confirmed that a Nightmare on Elm Street franchise box set will be released on September 30th, Sholder has talked to our friends at Bloody Disgusting about his endeavor to make sure the 4K version of Freddy’s Revenge would be “basically the same” as the original version of the film, “except it’s better.”
Sholder said the 4K remaster “looks gorgeous. It’s beautifully photographed, and all of that comes out. I was able to do a bunch of little tweaks and corrections that were impossible to do when you were just on film. It’s basically the same, except it’s better. There are little, minor tweaks. ‘Freddy’s Revenge’ Director Jack Sholder Explains How ‘Elm Street 2’ Was Improved for New 4K Release
In celebration of the A Nightmare on Elm Street 4K Uhd box set, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder chatted with Bloody Disgusting about his notorious sequel, its legacy after 40 years, and the new 4K restoration.
“Wes Craven was supposed to direct it, and he dropped out about six weeks before the start of production. The train was going down the track when New Line asked me if I would do it,” Sholder recalls.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of time to really think about legacy or anything other than how the hell am I gonna get this movie made in six weeks with, like, a hundred special effects, none of which I knew how to do, and a whole bunch of other things.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and a new 4K restoration is in the works under the supervision of director Jack Sholder.
“I just spent last week on the Warners lot working on the restoration of Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The remastered 4K picture off the original 35mm negative looks fantastic, and I was able to make adjustments and corrections only possible thanks to the incredible digital tools now available,” the filmmaker wrote on Facebook.
“The original mono mix from 42 years ago was brought into Dolby Atmos and blew me out of my seat. I heard things in Chris Young’s score I never knew were there and that, combined with some added sound fx work, really lift the film into another dimension. We were careful not to change the look and feel of the film, but even the rather lame scene...

There hasn't been a new chapter in the Nightmare on Elm Street movie series since the ill-fated 2010 remake, though it's likely just a matter of time before the franchise is rebooted. In the meantime, fans are wondering what a legacy sequel might look like with a modern scream queen in the lead role.
Kh Studio on YouTube has shared a fan-made concept trailer for A Nightmare on Elm Street, a film imagined to be a new legacy sequel coming next year. Using footage of Ortega from her other roles along with some AI-generated imagery, the trailer features Jenna Ortega as the lead character, a new Elm Street resident who's being terrorized in her dreams. Robert Englund is also imagined as reprising his role as Freddy Krueger once again, with the help of clips from his various films along with his appearance on The Goldbergs. The video can be viewed below.

Robert Englund has been known for playing one of horror's most celebrated characters for four decades, and he's been asked a lot of questions about his work on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise during that time. By now, there's one particular question that he hopes to never hear again.
In a new interview with ComicBook.com to promote the film's release on Digital and 4K Uhd, Englund was asked about the one question he always gets asked about playing Freddy Krueger that he'd like to never be asked again. The horror legend explained how that would be how long it takes for the makeup process to transform the actor into the Freddy Krueger character. After providing the answer for decades, Englund is surprised it hasn't been more common knowledge.

It's been almost four decades since fans were introduced to Freddy Krueger's unique brand of terror in A Nightmare on Elm Street. To mark the milestone, actors Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund, who played Nancy Thompson and the dream-invading killer respectively, reflected on the character's legacy.
Speaking to ComicBook, the actors talked about how Freddy would adapt to the age of social media."I almost think it's impossible to have a scary character with social media, because by the time you've already put out the scary side, there's like 100 memes of you being ridiculous, and they've figured out a way to humiliate you, so I don't know if Freddy could even exist today," Langenkamp said.

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

A movie doesn’t have to be good for it to be Good. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be good for it to be meaningful.
For many, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is more than a so-bad-it’s-good rewatch; it’s a film to rally around for its gay subtext (and just plain text). It may just be a matter of time before Freddy Krueger is back from hell to haunt movie screens once again. For when the inevitable next film gets made, director Jon Watts is hoping to be at the helm.
Of course, Watts may be best known for his work on the McU's Spider-Man movies. After working with Tom Holland on Homecoming and Far From Home, Watts would helm the hit crossover film Spider-Man: No Way Home. He's since gotten involved with Star Wars as creator of the upcoming Disney+ series Skeleton Crew. Per Collider, Watts was present for a Directors on Directing panel at Ccxp Mexico City when he was asked by David Leitch (The Fall Guy) about which IP he'd want to take on next. While Watts suggested he most enjoys creating original stories, he admitted that he'd be interested in taking on A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s an uneasy tension in Amityville in the Hood (2021) between intentional parody and uncomfortable racism. How much of the film’s stereotypical depiction of Compton, which includes gangs, gun violence, drugs, and sex work, is making fun of the conventions of Hollywood films? Or is this just lazy screenwriting and uninspired scenarios?
Let’s give writer/director Dustin Ferguson the benefit of a doubt and go with the former. Of the three titles he’s made in the Amityville “franchise,” In the Hood is by far the most self-aware. There are even a few moments that play like genuine (read: intentional) comedy!

inst.mp: Some movie franchises have successfully revived themselves after weak installments, leading to popular movies in the franchise. Reboots, remakes, and traditional sequels have all proven effective in bringing dead IPs back to life. Franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Star Wars, and Mission: Impossible have all experienced upswings in quality after disappointing entries.

In 1978, John Carpenter released his iconic slasher movie Halloween. Following the story of masked killer Michael Myers and his return to Haddonfield, where he left a trail of bodies in his wake. Culminating in a harrowing confrontation with Laurie Strode, the movie has gone down as one of the greatest slashers in horror history, and Michael has earned a spot as one of the greatest horror icons. However, there are many great villains of the genre scarier than Michael.
Michael Myers has some fierce competition when it comes to his fellow on-screen horror villains, who range from other slashers to ghosts and everything in between. The rich diversity of horror villains is what keeps the genre so entertaining, and plenty of horror creators love being able to outdo their rivals with the latest, scariest villain. This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" marathons are common around Halloween, and steamrolling through all nine extant "Nightmare" films is an experience the series' fans have likely forced themselves through at least once. Having done it,...

Mark Patton has a brilliant idea on how the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise should continue. Patton starred alongside Kim Myers in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, which made a profit at the box office but was widely panned upon release. Patton’s poor treatment behind the scenes and the inappropriate comedic use of homoerotic sub-text forced the actor to leave Hollywood for nearly three decades, but he is slowly making a comeback. Freddy’s Revenge is also now more widely appreciated today than it was during the transphobic times of the '80s.
When asked by Screen Rant at Mad Monster Party Arizona if he would consider returning to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Patton confirmed that he would and also gave an idea of how Freddy Krueger could return. The actor stated that he thinks Ryan Murphy should be hired and give Freddy...

In the modern era of legacy sequels, you can count in Mark Patton and Kim Myers of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge if a new legacy sequel is made for the Elm Street franchise.
In the first sequel to A Nightmare on Elm Street, Mark Patton played Jesse Walsh, a teenager who starts having nightmares about Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) after moving into a new home on Elm Street in Springwood, Ohio. Kim Myers also starred as Lisa Webber, one of Jesse's best friends. Per ScreenRant, Patton and Myers were present for a panel at the Mad Monster Party Arizona convention, and they were asked if they'd be interested in potentially revisiting their roles in a legacy sequel, even for quick cameo appearances. As it turns out, the actors wouldn't need to be asked twice.

Don’t fall asleep! Nearly 40 years have passed since Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) returned to cinemas as the infamous dream slayer in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985). The first sequel to the late Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) picks up five years after the seminal film takes place in the story's timeline. But instead of pursuing Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), Freddy now terrorizes the dreams of Jesse (Mark Patton) and his love interest Lisa (Kim Myers), and both actors are more than ready to sign on for another shot at Mr. Krueger.
Myers said in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant at the Mad Monster Party:
I absolutely would. I wouldn’t have felt that way a few years ago, but I think seeing, feeling the impact of our film and these films on the people who support them like you guys, it’s amazing.

Two of the stars from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge want to return for another film in the horror franchise. After the booming success of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Line Cinema immediately started work on a sequel. Freddy’s Revenge, despite being a commercial success, received mixed to negative reviews upon release, partly because of the Elm Street sequel's obvious homoerotic subtext. In recent years, however, the film has become a bit of a cult classic in the horror and LGBTQ+ communities.
During a panel at Mad Monster Party Arizona, two of the films' stars, Kim Myers and Mark Patton, were asked by Screen Rant if they would return for a future movie, even if it was in a cameo capacity. Both seemed overly enthusiastic about reprising their roles of Lisa and Jesse, with Patton making it clear he fully expects the franchise to continue.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
It was with a mix of trepidation and intrigue that I hit play on Dustin Ferguson’s Amityville Clownhouse (2020). The film, first released in 2017 under the title Amityville: Evil Never Dies, is a direct sequel to Amityville Toybox (aka Amityville Terror), the very low budget film about a father who kills his entire family after being gifted a toy monkey for his fiftieth birthday.
Toybox was emphatically not a good film, but it did feature a 10 minute coda that was a) the best part of the film, and b) teased a promising new narrative about a team of paranormal investigators.
Disappointingly this storytelling avenue goes unexplored in Clownhouse, though the sequel does feature a strong opening. First Senator Ty Pangborn (Dan Mauro...

Even if you only have a passing interest in horror films, chances are you've been terrified by Robert Englund. The man who brought Freddy Krueger to life in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise is a living legend, and fans are soon going to be able to peek behind the striped sweater and razor gloves in the new documentary, "Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story." Directed by Gary Smart and Chris Griffiths, who recently won the morbid statue for Best Documentary for "Pennywise: The Story of It" at Fangoria's Chainsaw Awards, the documentary follows the life and career of one of horror's most recognizable and prolific performers.
Ahead of the film's release on the Screambox streaming platform and VOD, I was honored to speak with Englund about the staying power of Freddy Krueger and how one becomes a horror icon. I wore a yellow button-up with black crosses on it,...

From the director of The Ruins, Swallowed is a queer horror nightmare about drugs, bugs and the extremes we are willing to endure to protect the ones we love. Benjamin and Dom have been best friends since they were kids – and Benjamin has been in love with Dom for almost that long. But Benjamin is heading to sunny Los Angeles to pursue a new career. Fearing the worst for his friend in the cutthroat city, Dom concocts a plan to make Benjamin some quick cash. All they have to do is a quick drug run across the border. But all is not what it seems, as the bags of drugs they swallow for their smuggling trip turn out to be something far more deadly and disturbing than they ever could have imagined. Plot: After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about herself.
Review: Hailing from Scotland, Consecration provides a look at grief and identity. Jena Malone stars as Grace, a woman who’s struggling through life, even more so now that her brother has supposedly killed himself. She journeys to Scotland in order to take care of his affairs. But there’s clearly more to his death than it appears and sends Grace on a journey of discovery. What she finds may be surprising to her, but if you’ve seen any sort of horror movie, will be old hat to you. Because unfortunately, while Consecration looks good, there’s not much more beneath the surface.
I really love Jena Malone and could watch her in just about anything.

"Not for the squeamish." Uh oh. Momentum Pics has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. It premiered at a few genre festivals last year, including at Fantasia and Overlook. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs and bugs and horrific intimacy. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. This trailer seems a bit tame, or they don't seem to want to show all the gross stuff, with only a few quick glimpses near the end. Still seems disgusting. ›››

Back in 2008, Carter Smith directed what I consider to be one of the most unsettling movies ever made, The Ruins (based on the equally unnerving book of the same name by Scott Smith), so it's no surprise his new movie, Swallowed, was one of the most nerve-fraying films I saw last year (winning the Jury Prize for Scariest Feature Film at Popcorn Frights). I'm thrilled that Swallowed will be coming to VOD and Digital on February 14th via Momentum Pictures, and we have a look at the tense trailer ahead of its Valentine's Day release!

Mark Patton, who of course starred as Jesse Walsh in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge and more recently told his life story in the documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, is currently in the hospital amidst a health scare, Bloody Disgusting has learned, with an official Go Fund Me underway to help get him the treatment he needs.
Patton’s manager Peter Valderrama explains, “[Mark] has been ill for quite some time now- originally it was thought to be aftershocks of covid and some hefty infections that could potentially be tackled with care and rest. But now it is quite clearly AIDS related ailments that he is managing.”
Valderrama continues, “Mark is currently in a Mexican hospital where they speak very little English- and they are completely overcome with covid cases there. He needs to be transported to an American hospital down there where he...

Mark Patton, the star of 1985 horror film “Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” is hospitalized in Mexico and is asking for the public’s help with his medical costs.
His manager Peter Valderrama set up a GoFundMe account that so far has raised more than 5,000 of the desired 18,000 goal. Patton, who is a regular at horror conventions, has had to cancel recent appearances, Valderrama noted. “Mark was truly looking forward to this show for quite some time ,but sadly his health has taken a drastic turn for the worse.”
Valderrama said that Patton has “been ill for quite some time now,” from what was originally thought to be effects of Covid. “But now it is quite clearly Aid-related ailments that he is managing. Horror has always been a genre for women. In her seminal work "Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film," Carol J. Clover explores the female characters in horror films as well as their impact on traditionally accepted gender norms. Research from the Geena Davis Institute shows that watching strong female protagonists in horror films can help empower women in their own careers. The essay that opens Clover's book is known for coining the term "final girl," the last, usually female, protagonist left alive in a slasher film.
Another beloved genre trope is the "scream queen." An actress known for her lung capacity, the Cambridge Dictionary defines this archetype as "a female actor who plays a main character in a horror movie who gets frightened or attacked." Fay Wray is often named as the first scream queen with many noting her work in the 1933 film "King Kong,...

Warning: The below article contains spoilers for "Halloween Ends."
"Halloween Ends" is finally here. Fans are already taking to their keyboards to debate their conflicting takes on what feels like the most divisive film entry in the franchise since "Halloween III: Season of the Witch." The film takes some big swings and plays with genre expectations, sidelining Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) to focus on his apprentice-copycat killer, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell). There are themes of evil infecting Corey and the town, and intriguing supernatural elements teased but left purposefully vague. Will this final chapter earn cult classic status over time or remain a source of fan outrage? Only time will tell. Whether you loved this movie or were disappointed and looking for something to hit the reset button, we've got ten killer slashers you should check out next.
