Sunil Dutt didn’t pretend to be a feminist. It came naturally to him. He would pick up his wife the great Nargis’s trailing gown from the floor as easily as he could play the reformist hero of his lovely leading lady Nutan in the fabulous Sujata. And when Nutan became the dominant spouse in Khandaan , Dutt Saab surrendered wholeheartedly to the mollycoddling.
In an interview conducted in the 1990s, Sunil Dutt told Subhash K Jha. “I didn’t think of these things, whether my role was more or less than my leading lady. In Mother India, Nargisji was the hero. I am thankful for the opportunity to play her son in Mother India, that’s how we met and became man and wife.”
Among all the screen heroes, Sunil Dutt was the only true feminist. While several leading men pretend to believe in gender equality their actions prove otherwise.

Shining the spotlight on the career of the incredible Sunil Dutt, Subhash K Jha walks down memory lane and hears from some of Dutt’s co-stars on why they thought he was so special.
“A true gentleman” is how the legendary Waheeda Rehman describes Sunil Dutt. “He was kind, considerate, and very supportive as a co-star. Dutt Saab ke baare mein jo tareef karen wohkam hai. All of us heroines felt very special in his presence. A wonderful friend, a devoted husband, and a terrific co-star, what more can any woman want? The films I did with Dutt Saab didn’t become big hits. But I cherished every moment of Reshma Aur Shera, which he directed. I even got the National Award for Reshma Aur Shera. Lekin National award unhe milni chahiye. Every frame in Reshma Aur Shera was Dutt Saab’s vision.”

I was only 24 when I met Manmohan Desai. Just eight years later, this man who was full of joie de vivre was gone.
How? The suddenness of this happy-go-lucky man’s death drove all of us movie buffs up the wall. To me Manji, still seems like the least likely candidate for self annihilation.
Though his aching back was against the wall, literally, he held forth on man movies and life with an infectious zest. His comments on offbeat films and filmmakers had me in splits. His films were kitsch art, though catch him admitting to anything arty about his works! His cinematic world encompassed a utopia where high melodrama resolved itself magically. To his abiding exasperation critics insisted on searching for logic in his films.
The maverick moviemaker said to me, “Do they realize how much brains and money are needed to make my kind of films? I really enjoy what I’m doing.

Mumbai Diaries Season 2 (Prime Video)
Starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Mohit Raina, Tina Desai, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Satyajeet Dubey, Natasha Bharadwaj, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Prakash Belawadi, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Riddhi Dogra
Directed by Nikhil Advani
Overlooking the rather strange lacuna in the timeline whereby the second season moves from the terror attack of 26/11/2008 to the monsoonal deluge of 26/7/2005, Mumbai Diaries part 2 is a more intricately sketched portrayal of a city under siege than part 1 which suffered from under-developed characters and over-informed plot developments.
By now we know who’s who at the Bombay General Hospital. They need no introduction, and their function within the disembodied domain of injury and trauma is clearly aligned to the crisis on hand. There is more of Konkona Sen Sharma’s Chitra Das this time than Mohit Raina’s Dr Kaushik Oberoi, the head of trauma who seems pretty traumatized himself.
There are tons of trauma to be negotiated...

Veteran writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar said on Thursday evening that Indian films have been faithfully reflecting the sentiments of the society. “Indian films have always depicted and reflected what is happening in our society. The cinema comes from the society. It is the same with dreams. What is there in the conscious and subconscious mind will get reflected in dreams as well,” Akhtar said at the launch of his book, ‘Talking Life: Javed Akhtar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir’.
Akhtar said that in the 1930-1940s, when K.L Saigal essayed Devdas’s role, the ‘khansi’ (cough) had become a virtue and fashion. “Self-destruction had become a virtue because of Saigal. However, as the society grew, this self-destructive virtue also vanished,” he said.
“When the Nehruvian era came, everyone thought that soon things would be fine,” Akhtar continued. “But as people felt that not much was changing, cinema gave...

Cinema can be a powerful medium for social transformation, and no one gauged it better than the legendary V Shantaram who used his memorable films to attack the malaise of untouchability and caste, forced marriages of young women to (rich) old men, dowry, communalism and regionalism, as well as to humanise policemen, prostitutes, and convicts.
And, he was not deterred when any of his courageous films ran afoul of vested interests.
When his “Apna Desh (Hindi)/Nam Nadu (Tamil)” (1949), an eloquent appeal against the deepening fault-lines threatening to destabilise the newly-independent country, faced an ill-informed and easily-swayed public and a malicious media campaign, there were powerful backers to ensure it faced no problems. These were no less than Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai, the then home ministers of India and Bombay state, his daughter recounted in his autobiography.

Mumbai, Oct 7 (Ians) The portrayal of women in Hindi cinema has undergone a sea change compared to an era gone by. The digital age has rendered more substance to the female characters with even the female protagonists having grey shades but there was a time when Bollywood had stereotypical portrayal of women.
And, there have been actresses, who mastered the craft of portraying characters such as that of mother-in-laws, vamps and gangster moll with absolute finesse, so much that these actresses became synonymous with those parts.
Here are some of the actresses who have essayed the roles of mother-in-laws, vamps and gangster moll under the umbrella of negative characters, with aplomb.
The Evil Mother-in-law:
Lalita Pawar: The Og! Lalita Pawar’s portrayal of a cruel mother-in-law can not be matched upto till date even by the finest of actresses. If you remember words like ‘Kulta’, ‘Kamini’, ‘Kalmuhi’ and ‘Karamjali...

Sanjay Mishra is an actor who never fails to surprise. His gallery of performances ranges from buffoonery (Golmaal) to sheer brilliance (Ankhen Dekhi). There is nothing this maverick performer can’t do.
His new film Kaamyaab features Sanjay as a ‘character actor’ of Hindi cinema on a very strange mission.
“My character Sudheer is a character actor like Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor or Lalita Pawar, so brilliant that anyone can take him from granted as and how they like. Sudheer has already done 499 films in his career. He is retired and aimless when suddenly something happens, and he wants to do that one last film which would round off his career. He wants to be remembered as the only actor who has done 500 films,” says Sanjay Mishra.

Saand Ki Aankh
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Tapsee Pannu,Prakash Jha, Vineet Kumar Singh
Directed by Tushar Hiranandani
There is plenty of preaching in this wackily entitled film. And yet Saand Ki Aankh hits bull’s eye. All the rhetorics and sermonizing thrown at the pig-headed annoyingly imbecilic men in this film—and the moronic men’s brigade is led by ‘Dadaji’ Prakash Jha who smirks at the womenfolk in his sprawling family and smokes hookah in the same breath—are richly deserved.
These men, so carictural in their patriarchal pursuits and perversities deserve to be killed with sermons. And Bhumi-Tapsee playing sisters-in-law kill it. Though Tapsee’s old-woman act is not fully supported by her makeup, both she and Bhumi shine as sisters-in-arms, hiding a guilty secret from the men who remain blinded by their entitlement and arrogance till the end. And when Tapsee taunts them towards the end for...

One of Bollywood’s most underrated directors passed away quietly at the age of 88. Lekh Tandon gave us a slim slew of scintillating cinema starting with the blockbuster Professor in 1962. Guru Dutt is largely famous for making films that are of a melancholic nature. However, one of his greatest works that falls under the romantic comedy genre is Mr and Mrs 55 (1955). Guru Dutt not only directed this film, but he also played the male lead opposite the beautiful and talented Madhubala. The story is about a middle class girl named Anita (Madhubala) whose scheming aunt hires a struggling cartoonist named Preetam (Guru Dutt) to marry her for a short period. This is so that Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar) can inherit Anita’s fathers’ wealth. However, little does Sita Devi know that her niece and Preetam begin to fall in love with each other. This makes it all the more difficult for her to convince them to file for a divorce. Sita Devi is a feminist and is hence against the concept of marriage. She does not want Anita to fall...
