Alloy Entertainment is partnering with singer-songwriter Rupert Holmes on a feature adaptation of his classic 1979 tune, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”

While the film’s official logline is under wraps, the project will be a romantic comedy produced by Alloy’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Leslie Morgenstein, and EVP Film, Elysa Koplovitz Dutton. Republic Pictures, an historic movie label founded in 1935 and shuttered in 1967, has been revived by parent company Paramount Global. The banner will function as an acquisitions play, releasing titles acquired by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Netflix has handed a series order to First Kill, a YA vampire series based on the short story by New York Times bestselling author Victoria “V. E.” Schwab, with American Horror Story and Scream Queens star Emma Roberts set to produce via her Belletrist Productions. The eight-episode, one-hour series was created, written and executive produced by Schwab. Felicia D. Henderson also writes and serves as showrunner.

Schwab’s short story was published in Imprint’s Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite by Natalie C. Parker and Zoraida Córdova, a collection of short stories about vampires that was released in September.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy flick 'Holidate' on Wednesday, and it looks like it could be nearly as good as The Kissing Booth.

The newly released trailer teases one of the most systematic rom-com plots imaginable.

The film revolves around a hopelessly single Sloane (Roberts) who's "the only single one left" in her family as she turns to Jackson (Bracey) to help her avoid awkward questions from her friends and family. Luke’s character is a perpetually single guy who is tired of being pressured to 'settle down'.

Netflix has formed a multi-year overall deal with Kenny Ortega, the filmmaker, producer and choreographer known for the “High School Musical” franchise, the streamer announced Tuesday.

Netflix is fast tracking two new projects from Ortega, the first a film called “Auntie Claus” (working title) that he will direct and executive produce, and a series that he will executive produce called “Julie and the Phantoms.”

“Auntie Claus” is a musical based on the popular book series of the same name by Elise Primavera involving a young girl determined to get to the bottom of why her eccentric, Christmas-loving Aunt disappears every Christmas. It will be adapted by Tiffany Paulsen.

Kenny Ortega of the Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise has just signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix. The pact with the producer, director, and choreographer continues Netflix’s aggressive push to lock down major talent as media giants such as the Walt Disney Company and Comcast prepare their own streaming services. In recent months, Netflix has signed deals with the likes of Ryan Murphy (“Glee”), Shonda Rhimes (“Scandal”), and Pixar vet Darla K. Anderson.

“As a fan of Netflix and their dynamic range of high quality content, I am thrilled to begin a creative relationship with the company,” Ortega said in a statement. “I’m super excited about the projects we already have in development and the shared enthusiasm I feel from the company. l look forward to this new Netflix collaboration with the highest hopes.”

Netflix unveiled two projects that Ortega will make for the company.

High School Musical franchise filmmaker Kenny Ortega has signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix with his first two projects being a feature musical adaptation of Elise Primavera’s book series Auntie Claus, and the original series Julie and the Phantoms.

Ortega will direct and produce Auntie Claus (working title) which follows a young girl who is determined to get to the bottom of why her eccentric, Christmas-loving Aunt disappears every Christmas. Tiffany Paulsen will adapt.

Julie and the Phantoms, which Ortega will executive produce, is a musical comedy series based on an International Emmy Award-nominated Brazilian television series. Julie is a teenage girl who finds her passion for music and life with the help of a high-concept band of three teen boys (The Phantoms) who have been dead for 25 years. Julie, in turn, helps them become the band they were never able to be. Dan Cross and David Hoge will serve as showrunners and EPs on the series, with George Salinas and Jaime Aymerich of Crossover Entertainment, as well as Hugo Janeba and Joao Tikhmiroff of Mixer Entertainment. Jason La Padura and Natalie Hart (High School Musical and Descendants trilogies) are now casting the titular roles. Truman Alfaro will serve as Ortega’s development executive.

Ortega directed and choreographed international hits including the Descendants trilogy, Newsies, and Hocus Pocus, and choreographed classic films including Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Pretty in Pink, among others. When Disney’s High School Musical 3 made its jump from TV to the big screen, the feature surprised opening to $42M at the domestic B.O. and racking up close to $252M globally off an $11M budget. Ortega directed the Michael Jackson doc about the pop legend’s final concert, This Is It, which grossed over $261M at the worldwide box office.

Netflix has won an auction for the Tiffany Paulsen script Holidate, a package that has Emma Roberts starring and Emmy winner John Whitesell directing.

The romantic comedy revolves around two strangers who are fed up with the pressures of holiday dating and make a deal to be each other’s designated “holidate” over the course of an entire year.

The film is produced by Wonderland’s McG and Mary Viola, who’ve made I Feel Pretty and The Duff. This is the company’s fifth project with Netflix after The Babysitter, When We First Met, the currently in-production Tall Girl, and the upcoming family action film Rim of the World.

Roberts’ credits include We’re the Millers and Scream Queens, and she’s part of the cast of American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Whitesell directed Big Momma’s House 2 and Malibu’s Most Wanted.
