Celebrating 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Image
If there was a horror movie remake scales of justice, it would be tipping heavily toward the side reading “Failure.” Most of the time, the film being revisited is a classic and really begs the question as to why it needs to be made again in the first place. Every once in a while, though, a remake will come along that defies expectations—one that deserves to be given a chance because of the care that was clearly taken to quench the thirst of fans of the original as well as bring new fans into the family. The Marcus Nispel-directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 2003 is one of those films. It hit all the right notes, captured the right tone, and cut off the right limbs.

From the opening voiceover, once again recorded by original narrator John Larroquette (though he probably got paid with actual money this time for his...

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Franchise May Be Revving Up for New Installments Soon
Mark Burnham in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
It’s now been three years since Netflix premiered Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a “legacy sequel” to Tobe Hooper’s original horror classic that arrived on February 18, 2022. Now, fresh rumors have begun to swirl that the franchise may be revving back to life for a new installment.

Deadline reports today that studios are knocking at Verve’s door; the agency has repped the rights for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series since 2017. While nothing has been officially set in motion just yet, the names showing interest in the IP have us intrigued.

The outlet reveals that Strange Darling filmmaker Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee are at the forefront of the conversation around reviving the franchise, with in-demand actor Glen Powell, star of the upcoming Running Man reboot, interested in reading Mollner’s script for a possible star vehicle and producing role. Lionsgate and A24 are also reportedly said to be eyeing the IP for new features.

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Hot Packages Revving Up As Leatherface Lurks Again – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Studios and filmmakers are knocking on Verve’s door as the agency is sitting on bloody good IP that they’re looking to take on the town: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Verve has repped the rights for the slasher series created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel since 2017.

At a time when horror and franchises are really the only surefire bets at the post-Covid and strike-impacted box office, the 51-year-old horror property about a chainsaw-wielding serial killer still has potential to make a killing.

One of the parties, we hear, showing interest in reviving Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filmmaker/scribe Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee, hot off Strange Darling, their $3 million-grossing, 96% certified Rotten Tomatoes cult hit. If Mollner gets a script together, word is that Glen Powell would like to read it. It’s very early days on this; no contracts or attachments as of yet, and the...

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Review: Tobe Hooper's Horror Classic Hasn't Lost Its Devastating Power
Image
One of the most notorious aspects of Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is that, despite its lurid title, premise, and tagline ("Who will survive and what will be left of them?"), the kills in the iconic proto-slasher are delivered with little to no special effects, blood, or gore. However, in spite of, or in fact because of this, the movie has not lost one ounce of its brutality and power in the 50 years since its original release.

Every Way That Stephen King Fans Can Visit 'Salem's Lot
Image
The 2024 feature film adaptation of Stephen King's second novel 'Salem's Lot will hit Max on October 3, but until then there are plenty of ways for fans to explore the vampire-infested village. It was the setting for the novel and two short stories; two TV miniseries; an oddball '80s movie sequel; and even a radio play co-starring Hellraiser's biggest icon. The author has even hinted that the legacy of the town extends through more books than most people know.

The 1975 novel was adapted for television in 1979 and 2004, and the short story was adapted in 2021. In 1987, cult movie king Larry Cohen directed legendary filmmaker Sam Fuller in a black comedy sequel, and in 1994 the BBC staged a seven-part radio play starring Doug Bradley Hellraiser's original Pinhead as the terrifying Barlow. And King has responded to questions about a 'Salem's Lot sequel with hints about his Dark Tower novels.

‘Friday the 13th’ 4K Review – How Does the Remake Hold Up 15 Years Later? [Friday the 13th Week]
Image
While remakes are a longstanding tradition in the horror genre, 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ushered in a decade-dominating trend of reinventing classic genre properties for the new millennium. Hoping to replicate the success of Texas Chainsaw, production company Platinum Dunes re-teamed with director Marcus Nispel for a contemporary take on Friday the 13th in 2009.

Like many of the best remakes, Friday the 13th doesn’t recycle the same plot and characters from the 1980 film. The script, penned by Freddy vs. Jason scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, strikes a careful balance between fresh and familiar by blending novel concepts with interpolated elements from the first four Friday the 13th films — from Mrs. Voorhees to sackhead Jason to the iconic hockey mask.

Following an extended prologue — which streamlines the summer camp slasher formula into 20 breakneck minutes before the title card drops — ruggedly handsome Clay Miller is introduced. While searching the...

Netflix’s Ic-814: Where Are Real-Life Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh, And Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar Now?
Image
There was a statement given by Vinay Kaul in Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack that India will face grave consequences for accepting the demands of the hijackers, and he was absolutely right in saying so, as to date, we are bearing the consequences of that systematic failure. We have to accept that, at that point in time, we were not ready to deal with such a crisis. And even if we were, collectively, the diplomats and the politicians created a mess out of it. The names of the three terrorists taken in the series, who were to be released as per the demands made by the hijackers, are based on real-life people, and clearly, they were not people who were involved in petty crimes. These were the masterminds behind the most dangerous terrorist organizations, and each one of them had been caught after a lot of effort and sacrifice was...

Every ‘Alien’ Movie, Ranked
Image
“Alien: Romulus,” out now in theaters, is a surprise late-summer hit and proof positive that the “Alien” franchise is far from over.

And the new movie, plus the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth,” have us wanting to look back at the series – the highs, the lows and the what-were-they-thinkings. Below is the definitive ranking of every “Alien” movie.

Chest-bursters and face-huggers are, of course, welcome.

20th Century 9. “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007)

The poster for “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” is stylized as “Avp R,” which emphasizes the fact that the movie was actually rated R, unlike the earlier PG-13-rated “Alien vs. Predator.” And, in that sense, the movie delivers the goods – there’s a ton of splatter in this installment.

A direct sequel to the earlier extraterrestrial team-up movie, “Avp R” is set in a small Colorado town, where a predator/alien hybrid from the end of the previous movie is on a bloodthirsty rampage.

11 Major Horror Franchise Revivals, Ranked
Image
As Hollywood continues its unflinching collective decision to mine intellectual property for all it's worth, that means every genre can expect to see revivals, remakes, and reboots simply to ensure that new generations can have new versions of iconic stories, regardless of whether new equals good. This week, for example, 20th Century Studios (now an arm of the Walt Disney Company) is bringing us back to space, where no one can hear you scream. Yes, it's time for another new "Alien" film, this one called "Alien: Romulus," from director Fede Alvarez, himself no stranger to remaking a beloved horror film. Does the new take on "Alien" stand tall among the other major horror franchise revivals? Is it as good or better than Alvarez's prior horror remake? Or should it be quickly forgotten? Let's count down the 11 major horror franchise revivals and see where this new take on the Xenomorph lands.

'It's an Out-There Story': Creatives Recount Making The Texas Chain Saw Massacre on Its 50th Anniversary
Image
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was a milestone in horror and a pioneer of the slasher subgenre. Key creatives recall the film's hectic development and their approaches to its controversial concept.

Screenwriter Kim Henkel recalled shooting The Texas Chain Saw Massacre "as if it were almost a reality show," and the aesthetic is evident in retrospect. The film that established many slasher tropes celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, marked by a reunion of its main creatives. In an interview with IndieWire, Henkel confirmed the 1974 flick was a commentary on the zeitgeist. "We were very much a product of our times, which was the late '60s, early '70s, and all of the things that were going on then," he said. "We were reading Marshall McLuhan and watching films like Blow Up and Medium Cool. Cinema Verite was very much on our minds. It lends itself to horror."

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ at 50: The Star, Writer, Dp, and More on Tobe Hooper’s ‘Most Personal, Intense Film’
Image
Despite being banned from theaters at its initial 1974 release for its shocking violence, Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” remains among the most influential horror films in history — and one that’s inspired countless remakes, sequels, spinoffs, and imitators.

Hooper, who would later direct the cult series “Salem’s Lot” (1979) and the ’80s phenomenon “Poltergeist” (1982), was a documentary cinematographer and an assistant film director at the University of Texas-Austin in the early ’70s. Co-written by Kim Henkel, “Texas Chain Saw” was remarkably only his sophomore feature following his 1969 psychedelic debut “Eggshells,” which Henkel also co-wrote and starred in.

In “Texas Chain Saw,” Sally (Marilyn Burns), her brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain), and their friends go on a doomed road trip in Texas County. On their way to Sally and Franklin’s family slaughterhouse, the journey goes off course when a hitchhiker splatters blood on their Rv, and masked serial...

Friday the 13th (2009) gets a 4K release with new bonus features
Image
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the release of the 2009 version of Friday the 13th, which remains the most recent Friday the 13th movie. Arrow Video Bringing ‘Friday the 13th’ Remake to 4K Ultra HD with New Bonus Features!
Image
Can you believe it’s now been Fifteen Years since Jason Voorhees last appeared on the big screen? Arrow Video is celebrating that sad anniversary with some great news, bringing the 2009 remake of horror classic Friday the 13th to 4K Ultra HD this September!

The release is scheduled for September 17, 2024, and it’s up for pre-order now.

Arrow Video previews the upcoming release, “In 2003, director Marcus Nispel made a lasting impression on horror fans with his box-office-topping remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Six years later, he turned his camera to another slasher icon, none other than the hulking masked killer Jason Voorhees, in his gore-soaked remake of Friday the 13th.

“Nispel’s taut direction and the stunning cinematography by Daniel Pearl – whose credits include the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre as well as the remake – bring a fresh and terrifying new perspective to the infamous hockey masked maniac, sure to...

Anchor Bay Entertainment label revived with releases of Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface
Image
Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!

Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are behind the return of Anchor Bay Entertainment, and they’re planning to use the label to bring the world “genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics,...

Anchor Bay Entertainment Label Resurrects with Puppet Horror ‘Abruptio’ and Doc ‘Dinner with Leatherface’
Thomas Zambeck
A familiar label for horror fans is getting a resurrection. Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new iteration of Anchor Bay Entertainment with the goal to curate a new library of films for distribution, projects that range from new release genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.

The new launch comes with a pair of acquisition titles: puppet horror film Abruptio and documentary Dinner with Leatherface.

“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck in a press release statement. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

Anchor Bay Entertainment Label Gets Revitalized; Sets ‘Abruptio’ & ‘Dinner With Leatherface’ As First Releases
Image
Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.

“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

It’s a Slaughterhouse: 20 Years Later, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Remains One Hell of a Remake
Image
Remakes were all the rage in the 2000s. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, The Crazies, My Bloody Valentine, The Hills Have Eyes – and the list goes on and on. And then there’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

A Platinum Dunes creation, the 2003 remake did what most remakes fail to do: honor the original while doing something wildly unique and equally as cool. Director Marcus Nispel, also behind the Friday the 13th remake, carves out a special place in the pantheon of horror by trusting his instincts and letting the cast play (and scream along the way). 20 years later, the bright spot in the sea of mediocre remakes still operates on all cylinders, and in many respects, outpaces the 1974 original.

From the opening frames, the film presents itself as based on real-life events. Grainy police footage shows bodies behind transported, officers taping off the crime scene,...

Inside the Hunt to Find an American FBI Asset Who Vanished in Russia
Image
In the summer of 2018, I traveled to Russia in search of a lost American named Billy Reilly. He had disappeared three years prior in connection to the war in Ukraine. While scores of Americans encounter trouble abroad each year, Reilly’s case was unique: He worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and agents there weren’t talking.

Reilly was a member of the FBI’s Confidential Human Source program, a largely anonymous group of thousands of freelance informants and operatives who assist agents with investigative and intelligence work. For five years,...

Dinner with Leatherface documentary looks at the life and career of Gunnar Hansen
Image
Set on August 18, 1973, director Tobe Hooper’s classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here) was released in October of 1974 – and to mark the 50th anniversary of the events of the film and the 49th anniversary of the film itself, director Michael Kallio will soon be releasing Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Dinner with Leatherface is expected to make its way out into the world this October.

Our friends at Bloody Disgusting note that “Hansen was a beloved figure in the horror community, but many fans didn’t know that he wasn’t just an actor. He was also a writer, poet, photographer, and documentary filmmaker. He continued to be involved with the horror film community through most of his life, attending horror conventions all over the world and speaking at film festivals up until his...

‘Dinner with Leatherface’ – Horror Icons Remember Gunnar Hansen in Upcoming Documentary Feature
Gunnar Hansen
Bloody Disgusting has learned about a brand new documentary titled Dinner with Leatherface, which looks at the life, legacy, and career of the late horror icon Gunnar Hansen.

The release of Dinner with Leatherface is scheduled for this October to coincide with the 50th anniversary theatrical release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Gunnar Hansen is of course best known for his portrayal of the terrifying, chainsaw-wielding Leatherface in the classic horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

Directed by Michael Kallio, the documentary will feature interviews with several of Hansen’s friends and colleagues, including fellow actors Bruce Campbell, Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, and Brian O’Halloran. The film will also include many in-depth interviews with his co-stars from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, as well as the film’s cinematographer Daniel Pearl and screenwriter Kim Henkel.

“Hansen was a beloved figure in the horror community, but many fans didn...

Michael Winterbottom Talks Blurring Of Lines Between Documentary & Fiction; Appeals For UK Film Funding Rethink – Qumra Masterclass
Image
Michael Winterbottom has devoted much of his filmmaking career to revisiting real-life events through works blurring the boundaries between documentary and drama to various degrees.

The filmmaker shed light on his approach in a recent Doha Film Institute (Dfi) masterclass, going behind the scenes of Welcome To Sarajevo, 24 Hour Party People, In This World, The Road To Guantanamo, A Might Heart and Eleven Days In May.

“It’s a continuum, even if you’re filming a fantasy film in a studio on a green screen there is an element of document to that. You’re recording that moment of the act of performance,” he said when quizzed on his attitude towards documentary versus fiction.

“Equally, even in a documentary like Eleven Days… you’re trying to shape that story, so it’s a continuum,” he added, referring to the 2022 documentary commemorating 68 children killed in Israeli bombing raids over Gaza...

The Best New Blu-Ray Releases: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K And More
Image
We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K

Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ 4K Review – The Original Horror Classic Cuts Deeper Than Ever Before
Image
I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.

Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

Co-written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, the plot...

Angelina Jolie Movies List Ranked in Order: Best to Worst
Image
Angelina Jolie movies list is so loaded it’s hard to pick which is her very best and which are not so cool. My foolproof technique for doing this for any actor is to check what critics and audiences are saying across multiple channels. That’s exactly how I arrived at ranking Angelina Jolie’s movies from best to worst. In the end, you can hardly go wrong with the multiple award winning actress. Even the worst movies on the list feel somewhat watchable because of her graceful and charming personality. There are scarcely a handful of actors that come close to Jolie’s reputation.

This article highlights some of the best and worst movies on the Angelina Jolie movies list.

‘The Cathedral’ Review: Ricky D’Ambrose’s Artful Restraint Yields a Shattering Family Saga
Image
Click here to read the full article.

If, as Tolstoy put it, happy families are all alike, that’s probably because they’re opaque to the rest of us, for whom friction and rifts are as much a part of the kindred experience as love. Jesse, the hyper-observant only child at the center of Ricky D’Ambrose’s The Cathedral, takes in all the specifics of his unhappy family — not just his parents’ divorce when he’s 10, not just his father’s ongoing struggles, financial and otherwise, but the awkward silences and generational baggage, the rite-of-passage celebrations straining toward grace. The writer-director-editor’s microbudgeted sophomore film, now streaming on Mubi, juxtaposes remembered interactions and still-life shots with a deliberate, elliptical precision, the minor-key notes building to a chord that resounds with the ache of lost time and unexpressed emotions.

Through the eyes of the filmmaker’s alter ego, an artist in...

Why Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem Is So Dark (Literally)
Image
On paper, "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" sounds like a fun, interesting movie. Two giants of the sci-fi horror world coming together to fight in a small suburban town full of victims? Sounds sick. Unfortunately, the 2007 movie wasn't exactly what many fans and critics were expecting from a concept like that, resulting in a critical and commercial flop that still has a 12 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

There's a good reason why people didn't like what they got after being promised a suburban alien clash: A lot of those clashes couldn't actually be seen very easily. "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" is a movie that has been lambasted for how poorly lit it is, with many critical scenes and fights playing out in near-total darkness. Seriously: If you're wanting to watch the movie, you better expect to turn up your television's settings beforehand.

What many people might not realize is that the film's...

Making The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Was A Nightmare
Tobe Hooper
The reason director Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" still possesses its unique terrifying power is simple: Filth. "Massacre" is a grimy, gross-looking film presented in oily browns, lard-colored yellows, and congealed reds. "Massacre" may have been photographed by cinematographer Daniel Pearl (who would also shoot the film's 2003 remake), but it looks milky, worn, tattered. It looks as if the film stock had been stored in a slaughterhouse. The visual grime of "Massacre" makes it look like its cannibal characters were the ones making it. There are moments in it where you feel like you're watching a snuff film.

It's often considered...
