‘The Accountant 2’ Review: Chemistry Between Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal Carries an Entertaining but Convoluted Sequel
Image
In The Accountant, Christian Wolff, the autistic tax professional played by Ben Affleck, lamented not spending more time in his airstream trailer. At the time, Christian housed the sleek vehicle, retrofitted with a glossy wood interior, in a warehouse, which he only occasionally visited to monitor his cash reserve and admire his art collection. The events of The Accountant resulted in Christian getting his wish. After taking down a conniving businessman and reuniting with his brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal), the reclusive Cpa absconds from Illinois and sets out on the open road.

When we reunite with Christian in The Accountant 2, he’s living in Idaho and searching for love. An early sequence establishes the tone of Gavin O’Connor’s highly-anticipated sequel: We see Christian self-consciously trying on different suits for a speed dating event before a blunt cut (editing by Richard Pearson) brings us to a conference room, where...

Breaking Baz: Maggie Smith “Could Make Grown Men Cry” Because She Was A Perfectionist And Giant Of The Stage – In “Top Tier” With Judi Dench & Ian McKellen
Image
Maggie Smith was a constant in the life of producer Robert Fox for half a century. She could “make grown men cry,” says Fox, because “if you weren’t 100 percent on top of your game, you were dead in the water, and she was right.”

Fox produced Dame Maggie in some of her greatest stage hits from Peter Shaffer’s Lettice and Lovage to David Hare’s The Breath of Life, in which she and her best friend, Judi Dench, shared top billing at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Dame Judi got the No. 1 dressing room. “But Maggie wasn’t fussed because she joked that Judi, she’d say, “had all those people in from Surrey to see her, so she needs the space.’ She wasn’t at all unhappy about it. She’d watch all of Judi’s guests troop in to see her. She’d say: ‘Look, there they go.

2021 Oscar Predictions: Best Film Editing [Updated: March 4]
Image
When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)

Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Film Review: Hollywood Finally Gets Kaiju Right
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Hollywood finally gets kaiju big battles right in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” a film whose approach is part 21st-century action franchise and part 1970s Irwin Allen disaster saga (fill the cast with prestigious actors and give them just enough to do so they can elevate the goofy material).

Whereas 2014’s “Godzilla” made us wait too long for the monster-movie money shots – vamping instead with uninteresting human characters – this one offers a family story made all the more heartfelt thanks to committed performances by Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga and Kyle Chandler, not to mention a constant stream of the kind of rock-em-sock-em action that makes you want to see a film like this in the first place. And that action, unlike in “Pacific Rim,” isn’t constantly hidden by murk and rain and night and fog.

Finally, here’s an American monster movie that understands that one positive effect...

Wonder Woman 1984 is more standalone feature than sequel
Details of Patty Jenkins follow-up to 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ have started to trickle through from one of the producers that confirms ‘1984’ will not be a sequel.

Producer Charles Roven has hinted to Vulture that there will be hardly anything tying the two films together and that Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ will, in fact, be a standalone movie much like we would expect from ‘Bond’.

“[Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash-Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling.”

“It’s a stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments.
