[First Look] David Tennant Transforms Completely in First Look at Gripping New ITV Drama
Image
Excitement is growing for ITV’s upcoming drama series The Hack, and now we have exclusive new images that bring the story to life. The show, created by the award-winning team of Jack Thorne, director Lewis Arnold, and producer Patrick Spence, focuses on the real-life investigation into phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch’s now-closed News of the World.

Deadline first announced the project earlier this year, and Australian streaming service Stan is co-producing the series. David Tennant stars as investigative journalist Nick Davies, who uncovered the phone hacking scandal more than ten years ago.

The pictures shared by Deadline show Tennant fully immersed in his role, alongside Robert Carlyle, who plays Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Cook was in charge of looking into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, a key part of the story told in The Hack.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's Iconic British Home Show Is Streaming on Prime Video in the US
Image
When one thinks of renovation shows in the US, one imagines an HGTV series akin to Ben and Erin Napier's Home Town Takeover, with budding builders and decorators travelling America on the hunt for their next ambitious project. Specifically, the enigmatic mind of Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's two-season reboot back in 2021 is now available to indulge in all its glory, with 12 episodes available across the two seasons. But what is Changing Rooms about? Well, the once-iconic British series took the home renovation premise and turned it on its head. Friends or neighbors were invited to swap houses and, with the help of top designers, redesign one of their rooms, all culminating in a...

“Better Man” True Story: How Much of the Robbie Williams Movie Is Fiction?
Image
Some biopics aim for drama, while others aim for originality. Better Man does both—and throws in a CGI chimpanzee for good measure. Directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), this 2024 film tells the story of Robbie Williams—except Williams’ played by a talking chimp, thanks to some next-level CGI!

Crazy? Absolutely. But there’s a method to the madness. The chimp symbolizes how the English singer sees himself—an outsider swinging through the chaos of fame.

The movie covers his boy band days, solo career, addiction struggles, and family drama. So, is it based on a true story? Let’s crack the case!

The Life of The Performing Monkey: Robbie Williams’ ‘Better Man’ Review
Image
By adding its uniquely fun monkey-shaped twist to the Biopic genre, Robbie Williams’ ‘Better Man’ is changing the way Biopics are perceived and experienced. From being a member of the famed Mancunian Pop group Take That to being one of the biggest international pop superstars of the 21st century. Robbie Williams has formed a legacy where both success and strugglers have had profound protagonism. It was just a matter of time before his story reached the international big screen. Following the steps of the greats such as Freddie Mercury with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Elton John with ‘Rocketman’, Robbie throws his life into the world of Biopics with a unique take on the genre. Playing with the fact that the genre incorporates fiction with history, director Michael Gracey chose to portray the singer as a monkey making the film stand out. ‘Better Man’ introduces the famed star to a new generation.

Better Man | UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray confirmed for April
Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams biopic Better Man is coming to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this April – more on the release here.

The biopic of Robbie Williams, Better Man, arrived in the UK with a poster that had been liberally splatted with very high star ratings. The same is also true for the incoming physical media release for the movie, with Better Man landing on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray in the UK from 7th April.

Critically at least, the film had the last laugh. There was something of ‘are they really doing that?’ when it was first revealed that Robbie Williams would be, well, a monkey in the biopic. The conceit worked a treat though, and the actual film – from The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey – was a solid hit at the UK box office.

Less so overseas, and many of the headlines have been generated...

‘The Hack’: David Tennant Phone-Hacking Drama Unveils First Look a Week After Prince Harry’s Historic Settlement
Image
ITV has officially announced its drama about the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal and investigation, a seven-part series now entitled “The Hack” and written by multi award-winner Jack Thorne.

The unveiling of the first look from “The Hack” — which shot last year — comes just a week after the hacking controversy concerning Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids reached a new peak, with his News Group Newspapers making a historic apology to Prince Harry and agreeing to pay substantial damages.

David Tennant — who himself accepted damages from Ngn over a phone-hacking claim against the now-defunct News of the World — plays Nick Davies, the investigative journalist who uncovered evidence of hacking. Toby Jones plays his former editor-in-chief at The Guardian newspaper, Alan Rusbridger, while — in a story running parallel to the hacking expose — Robert Carlyle plays former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, who led an investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.

Exclusive: The timing couldn’t be better. Just a week after Rupert Murdoch’s shock apology and settlement with Prince Harry, ITV has unveiled a phone hacking drama series from Jack Thorne starring David Tennant as investigative journalist Nick Davies.

ITV and Australian streamer Stan have spent the past year quietly filming, editing and laying the groundwork for The Hack, which comes from the storied creative trio of multi-bafta Award winner Thorne, director Lewis Arnold (Sherwood) and producer Patrick Spence (Mr Bates vs the Post Office).

Set between 2002 and 2012, The Hack interweaves two real life stories, the work of Davies, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World, and the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Its working titles through the past year have included Broken News and Mandrake.

Every Better Man Song, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Michael Gracey’s Better Man is one of the most creative and inventive biopics in recent memory, detailing the turbulent life of British pop icon Robbie Williams through the lens of a singing, dancing, CGI monkey. It’s a totally unique spin on a genre that’s otherwise become far too saturated, and the film definitely benefits as a result. It’s an extremely honest examination of Williams’ life, and despite Better Man’s box office failure, the film still deserves recognition for its introspective and reflective story.

In addition to the very transparent storytelling, Better Man also shines thanks to its brilliant use of music - and the intricate dance choreography that goes alongside it. As he displayed with The Greatest Showman, Gracey knows exactly how to use musical numbers in order to push the story forward and develop characters’ relationships, and he manages it again with Williams’ biopic.

One Of This Week's New Release Movies Has One Of Rotten Tomatoes' Best Audience Scores Of All Time

Music biopics are hard to master. It is easy for music biopics to fall in conventional beats, showing classic scenes such as an artist's early work, big break, first big concert, and frictions with the industry. That said, 2024 had some promising entries in the genre. The year kicked off with Bob Marley: One Love, a Valentine's Day release that reinvigorated the box office after it got a disappointing start with flops with Argylle. One Love ended up making $180.8 million worldwide, an impressive haul for a biopic.

While One Love falls more on the conventional music biopic side, there are plenty of films that have been breaking the boundaries of the genre in recent years. The Elton John-based Rocketman took a musical approach, for example, putting full-on dance numbers in the film rather than just depict actual stage performances. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story crafted a fictionalized version of the parody musicians story,...

Better Man Review: Robbie Williams played by a CGI Chimp?
Image
Plot: The life of international pop star Robbie Williams, from his early days as a member of Take That to his breakthrough as a solo artist and his struggles with addiction.

Review: There’s one way that Better Man is completely different from any music-based biopic you’ve ever seen. The director, Michael Gracey, depicts Robbie Williams as a CGI chimpanzee, with cutting-edge VFX from Weta, with actor Jonno Davies playing him in a mo-cap performance (although they use Williams’s distinctive eyes). The singer himself provides the narration. It’s risky and a big swing, but here’s the thing. The craziest thing about Better Man isn’t the fact that Robbie Williams is presented as a CGI chimpanzee but rather that this risky conceit works quite well.

Here’s the thing – when an iconic person is impersonated in a biopic, we get caught up over various surface-level things,...

Better Man – Review
Image
Jonno Davies as “Robbie Williams” in Better Man from Paramount Pictures

Does Better Man make a monkey out of British musician Robbie Williams? Well, no, but it does make an ape, specifically a chimp, out of the one-time member of British boy-band Take That, a singing star who achieved greater fame in a successful solo career.

Actually, the “monkey man” idea was Robbie Williams’ own. And that motion-capture creation works better in this biopic than you expect, helping emphasize Williams’ own feeling of being a misfit in the world, as well as helping us spot the character, the only ape one, in any crowd. Plus it means Jonno Davies, who plays the motion-capture young Robbie Williams, does not actually have to look like him.

Don’t know the name Robbie Williams? It doesn’t matter, if you are a fan or even unfamiliar with the singer’s career, because this...

Better Man Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The following contains spoilers for Better Man, now playing in theatersBetter Man's soundtrack includes many new versions of the musician's biggest hits. Better Man is the inventive and visually stunning biopic about the life of Robbie Williams, a UK-based pop star who rose to prominence in the 1990s. Better Man is an unflinching portrayal of Robbie's development from a boy band bad boy to a star in his own right, charting his personal failings and eventual struggles with self-loathing and substance abuse. Better Man's characters grow and change through Robbie's music, which is used to chart his biggest triumphs and most personal defeats.

Better Man's soundtrack contains 12 songs, with an additional track played early in the film serving an important thematic role in the film. The songs are mostly sung by Robbie Williams himself, although Adam Tucker is also credited on the tracks for performing additional vocals as Robbie.

Better Man (2025) ‘Iffi’ Movie Review: A fairly conventional biopic that is electrifying and familiar in equal measures
Robbie Williams
Everybody on the planet knows Robbie Williams. We have grown up hearing his songs, we have been aware of the maniac energy he brought to the music scene and we are aware of how chaotic his life was before and after he burst into the limelight. So, expecting anything particularly unique from “The Greatest Showman” fame director Michael Gracey’s “Better Man” is like finding a needle in a haystack. So, traversing the conventional biopic doesn’t really become his focus. Instead, he tries to take Williams’s life and presents it in a way that voyeurs see him.

Gracey employs a very basic ploy to tell his tale. Instead of showing and following Robbie Williams, the main figure that represents him is replaced by a CGI monkey (motion captured by Jonno Davies). The idea here is to present him as a less evolved version of a man – a musician and a performer.

The biopic formula has become rather mundane and uninteresting, save for the few biopics that actually pull us in and dare to do something memorable. But for all their posturing, Better Man is perhaps the weirdest, coolest biopic I’ve seen in recent memory — and most definitely in the least year. Directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, Better Man, which follows the rise of British pop star Robbie Williams, is a spectacle, with many sequences shot like music videos. The spectacle doesn’t mean there’s no heart at the story’s core, and it kept me watching despite being overlong.

Directed by Michael Gracey, Better Man explores the life and career of singer Robbie Williams through his own eyes.

‘Better Man’ Review

Stars: Robbie Williams, Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman, Kate Mulvany, Frazer Hadfield, Damon Herriman, Tom Budge, Jake Simmance, Liam Head, Leo Harvey-Elledge, Chris Gun, Chase Vollenweider, Jesse Hyde | Written by Michael Gracey, Simon Gleeson, Oliver Cole | Directed by Michael Gracey

It’s an understatement to call Robbie Williams a big star. Finding fame at age 15 as a member of Take That, the singer departed from the band to launch a solo career, which resulted in a record number of Brit Awards, a Guinness World Record, and the largest British record deal in history. Considering he would become one of the best-selling music artists of all time, a biopic seemed inevitable, hence we have Better Man.

Although, there is one notable way that this film stands apart from other biopics, as Williams is portrayed entirely on-screen by a CGI monkey (performed in motion-capture by Jonno Davies and voiced...

Missing You episode 5 recap and review: 'Chain Reaction'
Image
Missing You all comes to an end in episode 5, "Chain Reaction." Luckily, Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) gets all the answers to the questions she's been asking for years in the season finale.

Episode 5 begins right where Missing You episode 4 ended, with Kat learning that Josh (Ashley Walters) has been alive this whole time. She finally finds him 11 years after he ran away from their life. He now has a young daughter, Sadie. He tells Kat that Sadie's mother died years earlier.

Then, the pair start rehashing their relationship and why he left. Kat shares her theory that Josh ran after he learned Clint (Lenny Henry) was a dirty cop, and he didn't want to have to lie to her. He agrees, but there's still something missing. He tells her that he's sorry, and they nearly kiss before she pulls away. Josh confesses that he still loves her after all this time.

Better Man Cast & Character Guide: Who's In Robbie Williams' Movie
Image
Better Man includes an entertaining and talented cast in its unusual depiction of a popular singer’s career. Directed by Michael Gracey, Better Man focuses on the life and career of British singer, Robbie Williams, during his time as a member of the popular boy band, Take That and his eventual success as a solo performer. The movie also focuses on the different relationships Williams had with his family members and the struggles he faced with mental health and drugs before he was able to overcome his demons and revive his career in the late 2000s.

Released in theaters in 2024, Better Man was released to high praise for its portrayal of the highs and lows of Williams’ career. The movie was also praised for its casting, soundtrack, and the decision to portray Williams as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee among humans; Better Man received a record-breaking 16 award nominations at the 2025 Australian Academy...

Missing You episode 4 recap and review: ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’
Image
We're nearing the end of the new Harlan Coben Netflix show, Missing You, and things are getting really good! At the end of Missing You episode 3, Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) learns that her friend, Aqua (Mary Malone), was the person who attacked Brendan (Oscar Kennedy) in the park.

Missing You episode 4 begins shortly after, but first, we get to see a flashback of Josh (Ashley Walters) showing Aqua the ring. He was going to propose to Kat before he left. Then, we’re in the interrogation room with Aqua and Kat. Aqua saw Brendan leaving Kat’s place and she followed him because she wanted to try to protect Josh. Remember, Aqua believes Josh isn’t a bad guy. During the conversation, Aqua has a breakdown after being triggered by a memory of someone banging on a door. We don’t know what that means, but it likely has to do with Josh’s disappearance.

Here’s Why Robbie Williams Is a Monkey in 'Better Man'
Image
Released in limited theaters on Christmas 2024, Better Man is one of the most ambitious docudramas of its kind. The lofty $110 million production charts the life and career of famous British pop star Robbie Williams, employing the cutting-edge Weta digital FX to represent Williams as a tuxedo-dressed monkey. While jarring and hard to accept from the onset, the creative inspiration makes logical sense by channeling Williams' psychological state as he reflects on his past.

As Williams' fans ponder venturing to cinemas to watch Better Man, detailing the bizarre choice to represent the beloved pop singer as an anthropomorphic monkey will foster a better understanding of the movie's message. Far from just a silly audiovisual gimmick, here's how the movie came about and why Better Man excels due to, not despite, depicting Robbie Williams as a Planet of the Apes-like primate.

Hugh Jackman's Inspiration for Robbie Williams' Biopic Better Man Revealed
Image
Amid the rave reviews for the newly-released Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man, the film's director reveals that one of the singer's biggest fans provided its inspiration. Helmer Michael Gracey reveals how acclaimed actor Hugh Jackman and The Greatest Showman led to Williams' life story being told.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gracey, who also directed The Greatest Showman, shared how Jackman's preparation for the film led to him making Better Man, given how the Australian actor used Williams as a reference point. When Williams heard the music used in The Greatest Showman during preproduction, he gave Jackman the best motivation possible to proceed with the project.

Missing You episode 2 recap and review: 'With or Without You'
Image
Harlan Coben’s new Netflix show, Missing You, gets off to a bit of a slow start in the series premiere, “Every Breath You Take.” Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) finds her ex who has been missing for 11 years on a dating app. When she reaches out, he cuts off contact. Then, she finds out that the man who killed her father, Detective Clint Donovan (Lenny Henry), didn’t actually kill her father. On top of that, her ex, Josh (Ashley Walters), spoke with the killer the day before he walked out of Kat’s life.

I guess it wasn’t a “slow start” at all, actually!

Missing You episode 2, “With or Without You,” opens with a mysterious dog breeder, Titus (Steve Pemberton), revealing that a wife was cheating on a husband during an adoption interview for one of his dogs. After the interview, the man pays a visit to Rishi,...

‘Missing You,’ ‘Fool Me Once’ Exec Producers on the Tonal “Warmth” in Harlan Coben’s Netflix Series
Image
What makes a series based on a Harlan Coben novel so appealing to audiences? The producers behind streaming giant Netflix’s hit show Fool Me Once, which they are following up with Missing You, which hit the streamer on Jan. 1, shared their take with The Hollywood Reporter.

“It comes from the very twisted brain of Harlan Coben. I mean twisted as in telling stories that are twisted and twisting,” said executive producer Nicola Shindler, whose Quay Street Productions, part of ITV Studios, is behind both shows. “And you always know from the start that Harlan has got a brilliant ending, and then you know that there are just going to be so many surprises along the way.”

“Also, the are likable people in the shows and in the books as well,” Shindler emphasizes.

“Tonally, there’s a warmth, a heart and a human (touch) to the way that Harlan writes,...

Yes, the New Harlan Coben Netflix Series ‘Missing You,’ Uses the Title of John Waite’s Hit Song
Image
The new Harlan Coben series that launched on Netflix on Jan. 1 uses the title of John Waite’s hit “Missing You,” just like its book version. No surprise given that the famous author felt the title was “perfect” for the novel, as he revealed during a recent visit to London to present a first glimpse of the screen adaptation, which is expected to use song titles for each of its five episodes.

“I thought of the song right away,” Coben shared with reporters who got to see the first episode of the series. “In fact, John Waite and I, when the book came out, actually did a couple of events together.”

“Yeah, he did the singing,” the best-seller author quipped. “And when he heard about the show, he inundated me with emails like, ‘Here’s another version that I’ve done on the song,’ and ‘Here’s a duet I did with the song.

‘Missing You’ Review: Netflix Limited Series Slogs Through the Mystery Vibes
Image
“I ain’t missing you at all.”

Celebrated author Harlan Coben is known in the literary world for writing mystery novels with tantalizing characters and premises that challenge readers’ notions of reality. His books have been adapted for the small screen in recent years, mostly through Netflix, many of which have starred actor Richard Armitage in some capacity. His latest Netflix adaptation of which Coben executive produces, “Missing You,” follows a similar formula in a five-episode limited series that strives for quality but comes up short in the mystery department.

“Missing You” stars British actress Rosalind Eleazar as Detective Kat Donovan, a hard-nosed investigator with serious emotional baggage. Having lost her father to a gruesome murder years ago, Kat is determined to live out his legacy by throwing herself into police work. She’s focused on solving multiple cases at the same time, resulting in respect from colleagues and a...

Netflix’s ‘Missing You’ Takes Harlan Coben Love-in to Preposterous Heights
Image
Forget “Nashville’s Big Bash,” “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” and Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper taking advantage of CNN’s refreshment budget. TV’s most popular New Year’s tradition is fast becoming a Netflix whodunit which continually drops the ball in plot, dialogue, and anything approaching the human condition.

Indeed, following the success of “Stay Close” and “Fool Me Once,” the streaming giant is once again ringing in the New Year with the help of potboiler extraordinaire Harlan Coben. This time around, it’s his 2014 novel “Missing You” getting the small screen treatment across five episodes precision tooled to binge along with your party leftovers. And it may well be the most far-fetched yet, no tall order considering previous ventures have involved everything from decapitated alpacas and deepfaked dead partners to a murderous cabaret duo named Ken and Barbie.

Named after the...
