It's always a somewhat reassuring thing when the creators of a television show know how their story will end (or how they want it to end) right from the start. For any TV writer, it's a comforting thought to have a proper and, ideally, satisfying conclusion in mind that will bring a sense of closure to both their series' characters and viewers — not to mention, it also makes the writing process easier when you have an end point you can work towards.
However, many shows simply aren't lucky enough to see their plans through if, for whatever reason, their network or streaming service decides to cancel them earlier than expected. God knows that many excellent series have been prevented from saying a proper goodbye and having to wrap up their storylines the way they'd like to. Think of Paul Feig's quirky classic "Freaks and Geeks" or Gregory Thomas Garcia...

The streaming giant, Netflix, is gifted in its ability to deliver impressive documentaries and docuseries which aptly pull their audiences into the depths of the stories being told. It was a skill the streamer deployed with its two-season-running drama, Mindhunter. The series stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, with the Joe Penhall-created production based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s 1995 book, Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. The series also has Oscar-winning actress, Charlize Theron, attached as an executive producer on Netflix's acclaimed crime drama series, and she has broken her silence on the rumored plans for a movie trilogy set in the story universe.
Mindhunter Season 2 was released back in August 2019, but despite it being five years since, fans are still interested in an expansion of the universe. Theron, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, reveals that all that has to do...

It’s been more than ten years since the last Sherlock Holmes movie came out, and fans are still waiting for part three. While there have been rumors and updates here and there, one actor who was a big part of the earlier films says he hasn’t heard anything at all.
Jared Harris, who played the villain Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, recently spoke with The Direct while promoting the third season of The Foundation. When asked if he knew anything about Sherlock Holmes 3, his answer was pretty clear.
“Yeah. I mean, I keep taking that down [on IMDb] and someone keeps putting it back up. I have no idea. No one’s talking to me about it. And I really wish people would stop asking me… It should be on there. I mean, no one’s talking to me about it. I have no clue,...

Six years ago, Mindhunter came and showed us that detective shows can be more than just who did it, but why they did it. Created by Joe Penhall and executive-produced (and partially directed) by David Fincher, the show dropped on Netflix in 2017 and gained a cult following for its unique take on true crime.
It followed FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), along with psychologist Wendy Carr, as they pioneered criminal profiling by interviewing the world’s most chilling serial killers such as Ed Kemper, Richard Speck, and yes, even Charles Manson.
Critics loved it, and Mindhunter quickly became one of the smartest shows. Just when it was getting good, immersed with groundbreaking details straight from the bad guys, Netflix pulled the plug. After two seasons, the show was put “on indefinite hold,” reportedly because the platform found it resource-heavy to continue, and Fincher was...

Netflix's Mindhunteris a psychological crime thriller, created by Joe Penhall, with David Fincher as frequent director and de facto showrunner. The series ran for two seasons, and its future has been uncertain since Season 2 premiered in 2019.
There have been multiple conversations about continuing the show, with Netflix confirming in early 2023 that Mindhunter Season 3 will not happen. Even so, Mindhunter fans kept asking. To promote his upcoming show The Waterfront, which premieres on Netflix on June 19, Mindhunter star Holt McCallany told Cbr's Grae Drake how Mindhunter Season 3 might happen.
McCallany played Bill Tench on both seasons of Mindhunter, and plays the leading character, Harlan Buckley, in The Waterfront, an upcoming drama from Scream director Kevin Williamson. Asked about the internet's passion for Mindhunter, the actor explained that they did discuss a continuation.

It feels like it's been 84 years since the last time we saw the Hawkins gang in "Stranger Things," and anticipations are sky high for the fifth and final season of the Netflix show. It helps that we know next to nothing about what will happen, with the exception of the return of a beloved main character who was on the brink of death last season.
This is to say that, when /Film had the opportunity for an exclusive interview with "Stranger Things" stars Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo ahead of their turn as presenters in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards (an event that shined a ray of hope on the future of anime), the adventures of Mike, Dustin and the gang loomed over our heads. While promoting the IMAX restoration and 30th anniversary of his seminal hit film, Se7en, director David Fincher shares his thoughts on whether his popular Netflix shows will receive a physical release or not.
Fincher spoke with Collider as Se7en returns to theaters and IMAX close to 30 years later and ahead of a 4K Uhd release on January 7, 2025. The film was Fincher's second, following the hotly-debated Alien 3 (1992), which saw the controversial death of Ellen Ripley at the end of the film. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (in a breakout role) star as Detectives Somerset and Mills, respectively, as they investigate John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who is committing murders and heinous acts tied to the seven deadly sins.
Despite the dark script by Andrew Kevin Walker (The Killer) and cinematography by Darius Khondji, Se7en was a commercial hit when it debuted on September 22, 1995. It eventually made $100 million upon its initial release,...

Few shows have captivated audiences and critics quite like Netflix's Mindhunter. Created by Joe Penhall and executive-produced by acclaimed director David Fincher and actress Charlize Theron, the series premiered in 2017 to widespread acclaim. Inspired by the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, the show follows two FBI agents and a psychologist as they pioneer criminal profiling techniques in the late 1970s. Starring Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, Mindhunter became a cultural phenomenon, praised for its chilling atmosphere, sharp writing and incredible performances. However, despite its critical success and loyal fan base, Netflix put the series on indefinite hold after its second season in 2019. Now, fans are left wondering whether this haunting masterpiece will ever see a proper conclusion.
The cancelation of Mindhunter came as a shock to viewers, especially given its strong reception and growing fan following.

Netflix has long been known as one of the top streaming services dedicated to giving true-crime fans the content they thirst for. While documentaries and docuseries are the platform’s bread and butter when it comes to the genre, it broke the mold for how these stories can be told with its two-season-running drama, Mindhunter. Starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, the Joe Penhall-created production was based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s 1995 book of the same name and pulled back the curtain on how the serial-killer-hunting squad of the FBI was founded. Over two seasons, audiences rode along with Groff’s Holden Ford and McCallany’s Bill Tench as they got up close and personal with some of the most prolific serial killers in the history of the United States. Behind a multitude of the episodes was David Fincher, who joined the project as a showrunner,...

After having joined another iconic franchise, Jude Law remains optimistic about his potential Sherlock Holmes 3 return. The two-time Oscar nominee was the co-lead of the mystery action franchise adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's eponymous detective, starring as his best friend and confidant Dr. John Watson, while Robert Downey Jr. played Holmes. While the first two movies were commercial hits and there were plans for a third one, Sherlock Holmes 3 has remained in development hell for the better part of 13 years.
During a recent interview with The Playlist to discuss his true story crime thriller The Order, Law was asked for an update on Sherlock Holmes 3. After initially acknowledging there were once plans for time travel to factor into the threequel, Law confirmed there is a "new iteration" of the script that's been completed. In Hollywood, no one can stop sequels, and this is especially true of the iconic Alien franchise, which already boasts a total of seven movies (nine if you include the Alien/Predator crossovers) since the series began way back in 1979. And it sounds like there is even more to come, with Alien creator and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ridley Scott reportedly all set to return to the franchise and helm another installment.
At least, that is what it sounds like, according to a new report by THR. In an in-depth reflection on his years working with studio 20th Century, the report reveals that Scott is now developing a new Alien movie for 20th in the wake of Romulus success, plus a Battle of Britainfilm being written by Joe Penhall, as well as the previously announced thriller Bomb from Kevin McMullin.

An exclusive from director Ridley Scott: among his planned upcoming films, including his Bee Gees biopic and Gladiator III, there’s a mystery sci-fi movie.
The perpetually busy Ridley Scott has recently said that he has the next three years planned out in terms of his filmmaking. First up, there’s You Should Be Dancing, his Bee Gees music biopic which should begin production in early 2025 – he previously talked to us about his plans to make a movie that captures the wider music scene of the 1960s and 70s.
Then there’s Gladiator III, which he says has already been storyboarded and at least partially written (though whether or not it’ll be partly set in a gladiatorial arena seems to be somewhat up in the air).
In our conversation with Mr Scott in September, however, another project came up which he hadn’t, at least to our knowledge,...

It took Ridley Scott twenty years to return to the Roman Colosseum with Gladiator II, but he is already plotting his third trip to Ancient Rome.
“I’d rather get on into Gladiator III,” Scott told The Hollywood Reporter Thursday when asked about a different potential next project for the 86-year-old filmmaker. “There’s already an idea.” He added that he’s taking inspiration from The Godfather Part II for the next story.
The Gladiator 3 news first trickled out Friday after the French publication Premiere published similar comments from Scott.
Gladiator II opens Nov. 22 and arrives 20 years after Scott’s Gladiator, which won five Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Russell Crowe. Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen star in the new film.
Scott remains one of the most prolific directors working in Hollywood, a filmmaker who at times release two films in a single year.

The attempt to gain insight into captured serial killers in Mindhunter made for unsettling, thought-provoking, deliciously acted two seasons of TV. Created by Joe Penhall, the series was another Netflix project in which David Fincher put his directing style on as the recurring director, executive producer, and showrunner, with a tone that was close to Zodiac. Low viewership ended up putting Mindhunter in an early grave, and if fans are still heartbroken over the loss of what Season 3 could have been, a new docuseries on Hulu will scratch that true crime itch.

Known as one of the bleakest post-apocalyptic stories out there, The Road is also one of Cormac McCarthy's finest works. Released in 2006, the novel received a coveted Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year, and it wasn't long before Hollywood swept the tale up for itself. In 2009, a film adaptation by director John Hillcoat, from an adapted screenplay by Joe Penhall, brought the harrowing tragedy to life. Viggo Mortensen stars in his best post-Lord of the Rings role as Man opposite Kodi Smit-McPhee's Boy. Charlize Theron is featured as Woman, with Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce in supporting roles as Old Man and Veteran, respectively. There's nothing quite like this survival adventure, which threatens to take you into its dark abyss, but it makes for a thoughtful fable about the tenacity of the human spirit. Still, The Road film makes a few notable changes from the book,...

He’s been mostly laying low over the eleven months since he taped his last episode of CBS’ The Late Late Show, but James Corden is getting back to work.
In his first major role since leaving his show, Corden will take the stage at London’s Old Vic Theatre this summer, starring in the world premiere of Joe Penhall’s The Constituent.
Though he’s best known in the United States as a talk show host, Corden is also an accomplished actor. In 2012, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his one-man show One Man, Two Guvnors. That play, like The Constituent, originated in London’s West End.
Corden hosted The Late Late Show for eight years, from 2015-2023. In 2022 he announced he would leave the show the following year. He was the fourth and final host of the CBS franchise.

David Fincher reveals that Mindhunter season 3's cancellation was due to the show's high budget. Netflix proposed either reducing the budget or broadening the show's audience appeal, but Fincher and the creative team ultimately declined. Mindhunter getting cancelled is disappointing given its acclaim, but it's probably for the best if the alternative was to change a core aspect of the show.
Mindhunter executive producer David Fincher provides an in-depth explanation regarding why season 3 of the show was cancelled. Created by Joe Penhall, Mindhunter was first released on Netflix in 2017, earning acclaim from audiences and critics alike for its twisted exploration of the FBI's early investigations into serial killer psychology. Season 2 released in 2019 and was similarly critically acclaimed, but a season 3 never arrived, and Fincher would finally confirm last February that it had been scrapped.
Fincher now provides a detailed explanation regarding Mindhunter season 3's cancellation during an interview with Première Magazine.

Crime drama Mindhunter was “very expensive” and Netlflix wanted to make it more broad, says director David Fincher – which is partly why series 3 never happened.
David Fincher may have renewed his contract with Netflix for another three years, but unfortunately, it doesn’t sound as though a third season of Mindhunter will be on his list of upcoming projects for the firm.
As translated by The Fincher Analyst on Twitter/X, France’s Premiere magazine – the same outlet that revealed Fincher’s contract had been renewed – asked the director about the subject of experimentation and risk. Fincher then talked about his work for Netflix, and brought up the subject of Mindhunter – an expensive period piece about the formation of the FBI’s criminal profiling unit. Compared to House Of Cards – the hit political drama that helped make Netflix the streaming giant it is today – the more austere Mindhunter was a far more risky proposition.

Ever since the second and final season of Netflix crime drama Mindhunter concluded in late 2019, the world has been a safer, more brightly lit place. And it sucks.
Mindhunter was a modest miracle of a TV show. Created by Joe Penhall and run by visionary director David Fincher, Mindhunter visually looked like nothing else in the streaming world: dark and dreary yet dynamic and direct. Combining that aesthetic with the compelling real life story of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and their serial killer studies was almost cheating! And reality seemed to think it was. The show was canceled after season 2 since it was too expensive to continue on and Fincher was simply in too high demand with his day job as a generational filmmaker.
Despite Fincher himself declaring in early 2023 that Mindhunter was over over, we Mindhunter-ites can’t help but scour the internet for any morsel...

Ever since Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes typed that question mark after the words "The End" in 2011's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," we've all been expecting him to return for another round of sleuthing. In the years following that sequel's half a billion dollar success at the box office, we kept hearing about plans for a follow-up that never actually materialized.
In 2018, Dr. John Watson actor Jude Law revealed that the "Sherlock Holmes 3" plot was supposed to "propel the story forward," and "play up the fact that [Holmes and Watson] haven't seen each other for a long time." That made sense, since the second movie released all the way back in 2011, so there would need to be some acknowledgement of time passing between stories. But since then, even more time has passed, bringing only more delays.

Fans of Netflix’s macabre true crime series, Mindhunter, already know that the series has essentially become another casualty in the streaming giant’s latest hair-trigger cancelation rush. However, unlike high-profile recent contemporaries such as Glow, Away, Altered Carbon, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the David Fincher-produced series never officially got the axe; something that’s led to a sliver of optimism over its future.
Fincher, who recently attributed Mindhunter’s de facto cancelation to an exorbitant budget that didn’t match its performance, remains passionate about the series, and his comments in a Variety cover story reveal a desire to eventually conjure a proper conclusion with a belated Season 3. Telegraphing loose plans for a very long arc for the series, Fincher said “At some point I’d love to revisit it. The hope was to get all the way up to the late 90’s, early 2000’s,...

All signs pointed to true crime drama Mindhunter being donezo at Netflix. The second season came and went last August with nary a world about a third season. Then Netflix went ahead and confirmed that the show was in a holding (not Holden) pattern with all the actors released from their contracts.
Now, the most authoritative source of them all, director David Fincer, has confirmed what we pretty much already knew. There will be no more seasons of Mindhunter, at least not for the foreseeable future.
In an interview with Vulture to promote Fincher’s upcoming film Mank, the director broke the news of Mindhunter’s de facto cancellation.

Don’t be looking for a third season of Mindhunter anytime soon. There has been speculation about a possible renewal for Netflix’s crime thriller drama since January when options on the show’s leads, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, had expired and the show was put on “indefinite hold.” Now, executive producer David Fincher confirms that a third season of the show is off the radar at Netflix – at least for now.
In an interview with Vulture, Fincher said at the beginning of season 2 he “ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it, so we tossed it and started over.” He then promoted Ad Courtenay Miles to co-showrun, but “It’s a 90-hour workweek,” Fincher said. “It absorbs everything in your life. When David Fincher finalized a deal to make Mank, a new movie about Herman J. Mankiewicz's writing of the classic film, Citizen Kane, it was thrilling that he was returning to the medium. After all, it's been six years since Gone Girl, and Mank will be available to a much bigger audience than the Rosamund Pike thriller due to its forthcoming release on Netflix.

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.

Mindhunter season 3 has been put on indefinite hold while David Fincher works on his passion projects.
Mindhunter season 3 is now looking more unlikely, as Netflix has confirmed this week that the main cast have been released from their contracts and allowed to pursue other roles.
“David [Fincher] is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement about the decision. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
Stars Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff, and Anna Torv are now free to work on whatever they please, and will not be tied into a third season of the serial killer thriller series.

Netflix has released the cast of “Mindhunter” from their contracts, however the show has not been cancelled and co-executive producer David Fincher has the option of producing a third season in the future, a Netflix spokesperson tells TheWrap.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film ‘Mank’ and on producing the second season of ‘Love, Death and Robots.’ He may revisit ‘Mindhunter’ again in the future,” Netflix said in a statement, “but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
The cast were released from their contracts in December.

It’s been five months since Season 2 of Mindhunter launched on Netflix. Over that time, there has been no movement on part of the streamer regarding a potential third season of the David Fincher crime thriller drama. Last month, Netflix let the options of the cast, led by stars Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff, lapse, further raising the possibility that we may have seen the last of Mindhunter.
That is not entirely the case, the network told Deadline while confirming that the options on the cast, which includes co-star Anna Torv, have expired.
