- Leonard Peltier was born on September 12, 1944 in Anishinabe (Chippewa) Turtle Mountain Reservation, North Dakota, USA.
- In 1977, he was convicted of the 1975 murders of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ron Williams. He was serving a life sentence for the double homicide. Although he has openly admitted to shooting at the agents, he denies that he fired the fatal shots. In 2025, President Joe Biden commuted his life sentence and he was released from prison that year.
