How BBC Competition Format ‘Chess Masters: The Endgame’ Is A “Love Letter” To Producer’s Daughter
Image
Exclusive: The BBC’s upcoming Chess Masters: The Endgame competition format was inspired by so much more than The Queen’s Gambit, its producer has revealed.

For Camilla Lewis, who runs Chess Masters producer Curve Media, this one is a personal tale. Chess Masters stems from the darkest days of the pandemic, when Lewis’ daughter was struggling with her mental health.

“The thing which really helped her and gave her an avenue was chess.com,” Lewis told Deadline. “It was taken up by a whole new epoch and generation of people.”

On the chess side, things developed quickly for Lewis’ daughter, who had a knack for the 1,500-year-old game. Swiftly, she was winning tournaments, tutoring chess and was in a relationship with a fellow fanatic. “She had such a passion for it and was telling me about the anthropology, all the different cultures,” Lewis explained. “I realized this wasn’t past tense,...

Noel Fielding 'Will Be Returning' to Work After Abandoning Now-Canceled Apple TV+ Series
Image
Noel Fielding will be returning to work following the abrupt cancelation of his Apple TV+ series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. The historical comedy was axed by Apple last week mid-way through filming season two.

It was reported that Fielding, who plays the title character in Dick Turpin, had dropped out of the series even though three-quarters of the work had already been completed. Producer Big Talk Studios ultimately decided to completely shut down production on Dick Turpin season two because the project couldn’t be salvaged without Fielding.

Noel Fielding will Return to Work on The Great British Bake Off 2:30

Apple TV+ Has Cancelled This Series Only Two Months After It Premiered

HBO’s House of the Dragon is perhaps the biggest thing in fantasy right now. Matt Smith Used Emma D’Arcy’s Correct They/Them Pronouns After Interviewer Misgendered His ‘House of the Dragon’ Co-Star on Season 2 Red Carpet
Image
Matt Smith is being praised online for gently course-correcting a red carpet interview in which a reporter misgendered his “House of the Dragon” co-star Emma D’Arcy. Smith and D’Arcy star on the “Game of Thrones” prequel series as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively.

During an interview at the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiere in London, Smith chatted with reporter Sue Perkins on the red carpet about the climactic moment in the first season finale where Daemon informs Rhaenyra about the death of her son, Lucerys. Perkins, who hosts Sky’s fan show “House of the Dragon: War Room,” incorrectly used “she” pronouns when referring to D’Arcy. Perks said she spoke to D’Arcy earlier on the red carpet and “she gave you all the credit” for the scene.

“I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” Smith answered, using D’Arcy’s preferred “they/them” pronouns.

‘House Of The Dragon’s Matt Smith Gently Corrects Interviewer Over Emma D’Arcy Pronoun Blunder
Image
Matt Smith is winning praise from the LGBTQ+ community over the way he subtly corrected a presenter who mistakenly misgendered his House of the Dragon co-star Emma D’Arcy.

Smith was interviewed by Sue Perkins, host of Sky’s official fan show House of the Dragon: War Room, at the London premiere of Season 2.

Perkins referenced an earlier interview she had done with D’Arcy and explained that “she gave you all the credit” for the final scene in Season 1, in which Rhaenyra Targaryen is informed by Daemon about the death of her son Lucerys.

D’Arcy’s preferred pronouns are they/them, which Smith repeated back to Perkins when he answered her question. “I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” he said.

Smith added: “They are absolutely brilliant and you’re in for a real treat with Emma this year, I think Emma’s put in…...

Alison Hammond Has Revived 'The Great British Baking Show'
Image
Long-time fans of The Great British Baking Show, also known as The Great British Bake Off, remember the first hosts of the series, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. The duo hosted the series for seven seasons, and their quirky, kooky-aunt energy was enjoyable to watch. They became a soothing presence for the bakers in the tent, offering support whenever they could. When they left the series, they were replaced by comedians Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding. Fans immediately felt the hole left by Mel and Sue: Sandi and Noel could not offer the same comfort the old “Mel-Sue sandwich” did, leaving a sense of disappointment. Sandi was only around for one season and was replaced by Matt Lucas.

Taskmaster’s Sam Campbell Has All the Makings of a New Fan-Favourite
Image
It may have been mere months since Taskmaster series 15 ended, but the brand-new series 16 feels like it’s arrived at just the right time, giving us a chance to escape endlessly depressing talk of the latest celebrity criminal revelations and our world leaders’ somewhat “lalala can’t hear you” approach to climate change.

There’s a lot to live up to after the excellent last series, but Taskmaster series 16 has a promising line-up that fits the show’s tried-and-tested dysfunctional family dynamic. The ‘mum and dad’ figures of Julian Clary and Sue Perkins are joined by three distinctive ‘kids’: the ditsy persona of Lucy Beaumont, the intelligent fun of Susan Wokoma… and Sam Campbell, who is completely bonkers.

Although he’s probably the least UK-famous of this batch of contestants right now, he’s got serious comedy chops, winning the top prize at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and appearing in some great sitcoms.
