Rachel Zegler is returning to her starring role in Evita on Friday after making an unexpected exit during her Thursday night performance.
The actress, who is performing in her London stage debut as former first lady of Argentina Eva Perón in director Jamie Lloyd’s revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, exited the stage during the show’s Thursday evening performance, due to illness.
According to People magazine, Zegler’s departure was announced during the show’s intermission. Understudy Bella Brown reportedly stepped in for Zegler for Act 2 and received a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes.
“Today really showed just how important swings and covers are within this industry,” Brown wrote in an Instagram Story. “They are pillars of a show!! A proud day to be at Evita.“
Despite having stepped away from the Thursday show, Zegler was scheduled to return and perform Friday evening, her rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

“The Woman in the Line” (“La Mujer de la Fila”), the new thriller from “Clandestine Childhood” director Benjamín Ávila, has dropped its first trailer exclusively with Variety, ahead of its Argentine theatrical release on Sept. 4.
The film will be released across Argentina by Moving Pics, a strategic distribution venture founded by leading former studio executives: Griselda Fortunato, longtime Gm of Warner Bros. ‘Evita’ Theater Review: Rachel Zegler Takes London by Storm as Eva Perón in Otherwise Uneven Revival
Could it be time for Jamie Lloyd to hit the pause button? The prolific director, whose radically reimagined Sunset Blvd. last month won Tony Awards for best musical revival and lead actress Nicole Scherzinger, is rolling out productions at such a rate that his template — big stars, event theater, a style that might be described as minimalist swagger — is beginning to look entrenched, and a bit hit-or-miss.
Spectacle worked wonders with his recent, disco-dancing Much Ado About Nothing starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell. But while there was a glorious opportunity for a revisionist take on Evita — to reconfigure the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice mega-musical from the 1970s for a more politically confused and troubled age — Lloyd has simply turned up the volume.
The result feels decidedly erratic. The central performance from Rachel Zegler at times gives you goosebumps, but at others is in desperate need of direction...

Snow White may not have been the apple of audiences' eyes, but don't cry for Rachel Zegler. The West Side Story star has moved on and moved over across the pond where she's headlining a West End revival of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita — the 1978 musical inspired by the and times of controversial Argentine politician Eva Perón.
But you don't have to buy a ticket to watch Zegler sing the musical's showstopping number, "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." That particular tune is performed live every show from a London Palladium balcony that overlooks the streets below while the audience indoors watches it on a giant screen. It's an artistic choice that has earned some criticism from ticketholders, but has already made this Evita a viral social media phenomenon.

Exclusive: Jamie Lloyd (Sunset Blvd.) is not prepared to sit on his hands and wait another two years to take the electrifying West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita starring an unbelievably incandescent Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) to Broadway. “I would love for it to go straight away,“ he told this column, stressing that means early next year.
Rice is in agreement with the director, telling Deadline that he wants to see Evita in New York as soon as it’s ready to go. “We’re not getting any younger are we?” says the lyricist nodding towards the composer he’s known for more than six decades.
Some connected to the show would rather wait until 2027 but Lloyd emphasizes that he’s eager for 2026. “That’s when I would like it to go, as soon as possible, really,” he said, a point he repeated...

Rachel Zegler is reportedly in talks to play the main role in The Sound of Music. Zegler is known as a skilled actor on both the stage and screen. Rachel Zegler has spent the last few years being the subject of continued online trolling for some ridiculous reasons, but now she has been slammed for performing for an audience in London’s West End.
In the last several years, Zegler has seen her career soar, with lead roles in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Disney’s remake of Snow White. However, as her popularity has grown, so has the number of derogatory comments about the actress. After being heavily criticized for being a Latin actress taking on the role of Disney’s original princess, it seems that now she is taking on the role of an iconic figure from Latin America, people have found new ways to lay into the young star.
Currently, Zegler is playing Eva Peron in the current production of Evita at the London Palladium in the U.

Exclusive: Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) is a sensation as her voice soars through the London Palladium’s auditorium — and beyond — portraying Eva Perón in Evita, the classic Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd-Webber show directed by Jamie Lloyd. Also, Zegler, all 5-foot-2 of her, is the biggest star in town, with punters adding $200,000 and more to the box office daily since previews began a week ago, bringing the total advance, as of late Friday afternoon UK time, to in excess of $9 million for a 12-week summer run.
Broadway might get a taste of Zegler’s “highflying, adored” Evita, as one of the show’s songs puts it, in 2027, but more on that farther down the column.
Michael Harrison, who produces Evita for the Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals partnership along with the director’s Jamie Lloyd Company, declines to discuss the production’s box office figures, though he agrees that they’re “healthy.

Rachel Zegler is starring in one of London’s hottest West End productions right now, as former first lady of Argentina Eva Perón, in Evita.
Posters are plastered around the city and ads line the tube (the London subway), but there’s one creative decision that may be doing a better job at marketing the show than anyone imagined, luring hundreds of spectators to the London Palladium every night.
Director Jamie Lloyd — considered playhouse royalty after his revival of Sunset Boulevard, as well as the Tom Holland-starring Romeo and Juliet — is breaking the fourth wall of theater by having Zegler, star of Snow White and West Side Story, perform live to the street outside.
You read that right. During the show, Zegler, in her West End debut, leaves the stage of the Soho theater for the exterior balcony where she belts out the iconic “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.

Fresh off the massive success that is Sunset Blvd., Jamie Lloyd will soon debut his highly anticipated production of another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical: Evita. During a recent interview with Deadline, Lloyd previewed the production, which he called "radically different from Sunset Blvd," and likened this new version to a concert. "It’s kind of got the energy of a rock gig," said the director. "It’s almost like Eva Perón does Coachella... Fabian Aloise, who is our amazing choreographer, has done the most exceptional work, as he did on Sunset, but Evita is wall-to-wall dance. Director Jamie Lloyd is, to say the least, very busy these days. In four days his radical, magnificent Broadway reworking of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Blvd. will be competing for seven Tony Awards, including one for his direction, one each for his two stars Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, and one for Best Musical Revival. Then there’s Evita, another Lloyd Webber classic getting the Jamie Lloyd treatment for a June 14 preview date at the London Palladium, with opening night on July 1. That one has Rachel Zegler as Eva Perón, Diego Andres Rodriguez as Che and James Olivas as Juan Perón.
And of course there’s Waiting for Godot, set for Broadway this fall at the Hudson Theatre. The stars? None other than Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, those old Bill and Ted buddies who just might have more in common with Beckett’s tragicomic tramps than you ever imagined.

It shouldn't be controversial to say that Rachel Zegler is among the most gifted, promising actors in our industry. Her film debut — Steven Spielberg's breathlessly dynamic "West Side Story" — has already showcased Zegler's potential for nuanced performance, with her rendition of Maria embodying the beating heart of the film. Playing such a beloved, iconic role was a challenge in itself, but Zegler holds her own as the tender-hearted yet headstrong female lead, both naive and hopeful in her perception of the world. It is no surprise that Zegler ended up winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for playing Maria, being the first actor of Colombian descent to achieve this remarkable feat.
Zegler's other prominent roles, including Anthea in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" and Lucy Gray Baird in "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," also highlight her intrinsic charm. This is especially true for "Songbirds & Snakes,...

Rachel Zegler has reason to celebrate the Snow White remake despite the consistent backlash the film and her casting as the beloved Disney princess has faced. The live-action adaptation recently helped Zegler break new box-office ground in her short career.
Via The Numbers, Disney's Snow White remake is now the second-highest-grossing movie Zegler has starred in, earning $142.8 million worldwide since its March 21 release. However, the film is far from Zegler's most commercially successful big-screen entry, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which made $349 million in global ticket sales. But the Snow White live-action film has helped Zegler's movies reach the $700 million milestone.
The Snow White remake has made a lot of critics grumpy, with the film getting a lowly 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite Zegler receiving some commendation for her performance as the title character. Fans are less bashful in their praise for the live-action movie, however, with...

After raiding the crown jewels for just about every live-action reboot imaginable, Disney has finally gotten around to the one that started it all, the 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. That film represents Walt Disney’s first-ever full-length animated feature.
Originally, Disney’s plan was to rerelease its animated vault treasures every seven years for a new generation of kids, but they got the bright idea to instead remake those films as live-action features. Thus we have had versions of Sleeping Beauty reimagined around evil Maleficent; Peter Pan; Fantasia; Dumbo; Pinocchio; three variations on 101 Dalmatians including Cruella; The Lion King; Jungle Book; Aladdin; Mulan; Alice In Wonderland; The Little Mermaid; and an unfortunate attempt to meddle with my favorite, Lady and the Tramp among others. The best in the live-action genre to date remain Bill Condon’s blockbuster Beauty and the Beast and Kenneth Branagh’s splendid Cinderella.

Disney’s feature take on its classic 1937 toon Snow White finally is hitting theaters this weekend after weathering a tormenting, blown-out-of-proportion tabloid controversy. Domestic is looking to land between a $45M-$50M opening with another $55M abroad.
The reported $270M feature production came under fire on social for the casting an actress of Latina-Polish descent — Zegler — in the lead role. She pushed back against the criticism. She also makde some actress’ remarks about the original film and slammed Donald Trump and his supporters back in November. It’s believed that some of this sentiment is in the ether, which has pushed down ticket sales. It also led Disney to pare down its world premiere on Saturday, which excluded mainstream press from the carpet — despite the studio putting on a full extravaganza pre-party with food, free candy, afternoon appletinis, faux gem digging and Zegler taking selfies in the crowd.

Halle Bailey suffered at the hands of critics for playing the red-haired and pale-skinned Ariel in the Disney live-action remake, but I think Rachel Zegler’s takes the cake.
Many argue that they’re not being color biased in their argument, but simply choosing to acknowledge that the original animated movie mentioned the principal protagonist – Snow White – having a skin that is as white as snow.
To add to the ongoing chaos is Rachel Zegler making certain comments that fans believe is “woke.” She called the prince “a stalker” and claimed her character’s name has nothing to do with color in the upcoming live-action version. Her take on politics and gender representation were also topics that sparked criticisms from fans.

Lilo and Stitch trailer nearly breaks Disney record
Disney unveiled the Lilo and Stitch trailer on March 12, and in just 24 hours it amassed 158 million views, which was the second most for a live-action Disney film, behind only 2019's photorealistic The Lion King. It ranked as the No. 1 trend on Twitter and YouTube. Does that bode well for the film's box office when it's released on May 23? Well, The Lion King remake ended up grossing $1.66 billion worldwide.
Lilo and Stitch, based on the 2002 animated film, is about a friendship between a Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien. It's directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, and newcomer Maia Kealoha.

Breaking Baz: ‘Snow White’ Star Rachel Zegler Signs To Play Eva Perón In ‘Evita’ At London Palladium
Exclusive: Rachel Zegler, star of Steven Spielberg’s screen version of West Side Story and the soon-to-be-released Disney live-action movie Snow White, will make her London theater debut as Eva Perón in a revival of the garlanded Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita, director Jamie Lloyd confirmed to Deadline on Friday.
The show will play at the fabled London Palladium for a limited 12-week summer season, with performances from June 14 through September 6.
Reached in New York where he’s meeting with actors being considered for other key roles, an excited Lloyd described Zegler as a “phenomenal talent” who will “blow the roof off the London Palladium.”
Complex negotiations to bring Zegler, an American of Colombian and Polish descent, to the West End were completed a few days ago. She will be among the highest-paid stars on the London stage this season.

Ariana DeBose is no longer being attached to lead an Evita revival!
The 34-year-old Tony-nominated actress was rumored to be in talks to star in an upcoming production of the musical, but Variety reports she is no longer attached.
Earlier this month, she said they were “70% there” of working out the details.

According to Variety‘s Marc Malkin, it didn’t work out for Ariana to star in Evita due to scheduling conflicts. She was to portray the lead, Eva Perón.
The musical, lead by director Jamie Lloyd, is scheduled to run from June 16-September 6 at London Palladium on the West End.
Patti LuPone originated the role on Broadway in 1979, while Madonna portrayed the character in the 1996 movie adaptation.
Currently, Ariana is in the midst of filming the upcoming Prime Video series Scarpetta, which received a two-season order and also stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman.

Ariana DeBose won’t be crying for Argentina.
The Oscar winner was in talks to star in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of “Evita” at the London Palladium, but sources tell me things didn’t work out “due to scheduling.” The musical is scheduled to run June 16 to Sept. 6.
DeBose is currently shooting “Scarpetta,” the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.
“We’re 70% there,” DeBose told Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye in January about her possible “Evita” deal.
“Evita,” from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of Argentine political powerhouse Eva Perón. Elaine Paige played the title role in the original 1978 West End production in London. Patti LuPone originated the role on Broadway in 1979. Madonna starred in the 1996 film adaptation.
My sources insist that DeBose is interested in returning to Broadway “when the time is right.

Boundaries are constantly blurring in “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the revolutionary mid-’80s film that became a Kander and Ebb musical, and that cunningly (and stunningly) morphs back to the big screen, courtesy of “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon. Confined mostly to an Argentine detention facility in 1983, at the height of the country’s Dirty War, the show is the flip side of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita,” focusing on the brutal military regime that came decades after first lady Eva Péron’s death. Bleak as that may sound, the musical finds rare shards of light — and an unlikely connection — in the most despairing of places.
In every incarnation of Manuel Puig’s novel, cinema offers much-needed escapism from not only political injustice, but also the kind of biological prisons that oppress us. Sitting in the dark, transfixed the dreams unfolding on screen, filmgoers leave their bodies for a time,...

Success stories don't always end with spotlights and standing ovations. Director Alan Parker built his reputation on musical films that weren't afraid of the shadows, especially his despairing and isolating allegorical 1982 movie, Pink Floyd: The Wall. Even Parker found it depressing to work on. By 1991, his sense of grit was still present, but he created something that looked to the light, even if it was the warm glow of a Gaelic pub: The Commitments... and it's pretty great.
The Commitments, based on Roddy Doyle's book, is a Dublin-set musical about never losing hope and believing in ourselves when no one else does. There's no montage of someone spinning in a leotard in front of a snooty panel desperate to get accepted into Julliard. Instead, we find ourselves among an unlikely band of plucky misfits who learn to have faith. It's raw, real, and inspirational in its alternative way — a...

For Elton John and his husband David Furnish, televangelist Tammy Faye has long been a figure of fascination.
The two were drawn to her not only for her over-the-top style, including her bold eye makeup and mannerisms, but also her compassionate interview with pastor Steve Pieters, a gay man living with AIDS, in 1985 on her popular Christian television show Tammy’s House Party. That moment, as well as her complicated legacy intertwined with the rise of televangelism and the downfall of her former husband and their television empire, led John and Furnish to option the rights to turn her story into a West End show and now a Broadway musical.
“I toured America for so long and so often that she became someone I was very, very interested in, and that pivotal moment when she did have the pastor on was equivalent to Princess Diana holding the man’s hand in the Lighthouse in London.

A coming-of-age drama about Argentinian icon Eva Peron and two Spanish comedy dramas, Band Of Buffoons and A Series Of People, are among the stand out series projects presented at the fourth edition of the Iberseries & Platino Industria Co-Production Forum in Madrid this week.
