While Not a Huge Leap in the Genre, ‘Dead Take’ Is Still a Memorable Experience [Review]
Image
As someone who studied screenwriting in undergrad, I’ve always been drawn in by tales about the filmmaking process. No matter what the medium, seeing characters struggle with every aspect of the movie industry is like catnip to me, allowing you to dive into characters by seeing the art they create. Dead Take, the sophomore game from Surgent Studios, takes that theme and combines it with a first-person psychological horror game that feels like one part Layers of Fear, one part Immortality.

As actor Chase Lowry, you enter the mansion of enigmatic producer Duke Cain in the search for your friend Vinny Monroe. There’s remnants of a party you know Vinny was attending, but the house seems hauntingly empty, creating an eerie atmosphere as you slowly explore the abandoned house. Throughout the four hour game, you’ll learn about the new project Cain was working on, a film that...

Psychological Horror Game ‘Dead Take’ Out Now [Trailer]
Neil Newbon
Surgent Studios’ Dead Take, a dark interactive escape room title that descents into the horrors of Hollywood, is out today on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Featuring a heavyweight cast of video game voice actors, with actors Neil Newbon and Ben Starr as the main characters, Dead Take features a 10% time-limited discount to celebrate the launch.

“I’m not pulling any punches with Dead Take,” said Abubakar Salim, Creative Director of Surgent Studios. “We decided to go bold with it, to take risks, to stack it with incredible actors who really understand the vision. It’s ambitious, but we couldn’t be timid with this one. This is our shot.”

Set in a luxurious yet secluded Hollywood Hills mansion, Dead Take casts players as actor Chase Lowry (Newbon), who is searching for his friend Vinny Monroe (Starr), who has gone missing after a lavish Hollywood party. As...

‘Dead Take’ Launches July 31; Matt Mercer, Laura Bailey and Sam Lake Join Cast [Trailer]
BAFTA Breakthrough
Surgent Studios and Pocketpair Publishing’s psychological horror title Dead Take will arrive sooner than you think on July 31 for Steam and the Epic Games Store. In addition to the release date news, the devs have announced the full lineup of cast members, which includes more notable actors from the world of video games. We also get a new trailer coinciding the new release date.

“Dead Take is about actors. So we needed actors who’ve lived it,” said Abubakar Salim, Creative Director of Dead Take. “It’s a game about the high of ambition and the rot underneath it. The lies we tell ourselves to get in the spotlight, and the monsters we become to stay there. Everyone in this cast has felt that pressure. This was a chance to bleed it out.”

The full lineup now includes Jane Perry (Baldur’s Gate 3, Dragon Age: The Veilguard), and Alanah Pearce...

Using his ability to create rifts in the fabric of spacetime across parallel universes, he searches for the reality in which his brother Leon, a former-marine, manages to rescue him. With attempt after attempt ending in Leon’s death, the strain starts to take its toll on both brothers. When Max discovers his captors are using his power against him, he realizes he must stop focusing on how the story ends and rewrite the story from the beginning.

Max Beyond is directed, co-written and co-produced by Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dulull, co-written by Stavros Pamballis (Siege On Liperti Street) and co-produced by Paula Crickard. The cast includes BAFTA-award-winning actor Jane Perry, Dave Fennoy (The Walking Dead) and Cade Tropeano (Black Bird); with motion capture performances from Ace Ruele (Eternals) and Alex Kong (Marvel Studio’s What If?...

First Trailer for HaZ's 'Max Beyond' Unreal Engine Sci-Fi Thriller Movie
Image
"The next time he Rifts, he will die." HaZimation has revealed the first official trailer for the animated sci-fi action thriller movie titled Max Beyond, the latest creation from VFX filmmaker Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull. We've been a fan of HaZ for years, posting his short films way back when before he broke out into making features and more. Max Beyond uses the latest real-time animation technology in Unreal Engine, allowing HaZ to take a "transmedia view" to expand the story and universe of Max Beyond into a video game. This s sort of a proof of concept movie for the video game, connecting the story in here eventually in your own hands. A Ptsd marine goes to extreme measures to rescue his 8-year-old brother from a science research facility, where he is being experimented on for his special ability to tap into multi-dimensions across space and time (yet another multiverse...

‘Greta’ Review
Stars: Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz, Maika Monroe, Jane Perry, Jeff Hiller, Parker Sawyers, Brandon Lee Sears, Arthur Lee, Rosa Escoda, Jessica Predd, Thaddeus Daniels, Raven Dauda, Colm Feore, Zawe Ashton, Stephen Rea | Written by Neil Jordan, Ray Wright | Directed by Neil Jordan

Greta tells the story of a young woman befriends a lonely widow who’s harboring a dark and deadly agenda towards her… Isabelle Huppert and Chloë Grace Moretz are terrific as Greta Hideg and Frances McCullen, respectively. The former showcases an outstanding electrifying performance that gestates a harrowing ‘under the skin’ conviction of torment and despair. The underbelly of a character such as Greta Hideg is frightening to witness develop. The sheer cruelty and haunting persona grow in an engulfing bravado, almost like cancer as the film develops from one nightmarish scenario to the next with seizable abhorrent effects, albeit intoxicatingly addictive to witness the sheer depth...

Sneak Preview Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Phantom Thread'
"Reynolds has made my dream come true..." Hold on! The year isn't over yet! There's still a few contenders waiting to premiere. Focus Features has debuted a new "sneak preview" trailer Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Phantom Thread, featuring details on sneak preview screenings happening in New York and L.A. Don't forget, PTA ran this kind of preview for The Master a few years ago as well. This is supposedly the final film for acclaimed actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who is retiring from acting (for now). Set in the 1950s in London, the sensual story is about renowned dressmaker named Reynolds Woodcock, as played by Day-Lewis, whose "carefully tailored life" is disrupted by love - as you can watch in this new trailer. The cast includes Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps, Camilla Rutherford, and Jane Perry. The movie "paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey,...

New Official Trailer for Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull's Space Sci-Fi 'The Beyond'
"To find our place in the universe, we must venture beyond our boundaries." Gravitas Ventures debuted this full trailer for the space sci-fi The Beyond, one of the first features from Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull, who got his start making cool sci-fi short films on Vimeo. We featured a teaser trailer for this earlier in the year, but the film has undergone extensive reshoots and re-edits, and this new trailer is a better look at what HaZ has cooked up. The Beyond is a low-budget sci-fi somewhat based on the idea first introduced in his short Project Kronos - first contact. It's about astronauts going through a wormhole ("The Void") to another part of the universe, who return early, and now everyone wants to know what they found on the other side. The cast includes Nigel Barber, Jane Perry, Brian Deacon, and David Bailie. Sci-fi geeks need to see this. Here's...

"Perhaps I'm looking for trouble?" It's here! Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Phantom Thread, which is also the final film starring acclaimed actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who is retiring from acting (for now). Set in the 1950s in London, the sensual story is about renowned dressmaker named Reynolds Woodcock, as played by Day-Lewis, whose "carefully tailored life" is disrupted by love. The cast includes Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps, Camilla Rutherford, Jane Perry, and others. According to Focus, the movie "paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running." Sounds, and looks, ravishing. This also looks like the kind of film that will make dress-lovers go crazy with joy at the costumes in the film. Watch it below. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread,...

Intriguing Trailer For a Cool Looking Indie Sci-Fi Film Called The Beyond
I've got a cool trailer for an upcoming indie sci-fi film being made called The Beyond. It looks like an interesting sci-fi thriller that's might be worth checking out. The film was written and directed by Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dullul, who is a veteran VFX artist that worked on The Dark Knight.

The Beyond is based on Dullul’s 2014 short film Project Kronos, which you can watch here. The feature film was announced four years ago, and it's cool to see that it's being released! I really enjoyed the short and I'm looking forward to seeing this feature-length version of it.

The story chronicles a space agency of the near future and its first contact with intelligent life on an interstellar space mission. The astronauts embark on this mission using advances robotics and they travel through a newly discovered wormhole known as the Void.

According to the press release:

Dullul self produced,...

Tom Hanks: His best performances to date
This week, both at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as opening in theaters, we have an independent movie that stars Tom Hanks. Especially considering how infrequently Hanks acts in small films these days, this is something to take notice of. The film in question? Well, it’s A Hologram for the King, of course. Side note, this is another example of a thing that I mentioned yesterday, namely that a Tribeca title is going basically straight to general release. There’s another one of these still to discuss before the week is out, but right now, Hanks’ flick is what is in the spotlight. I see it tomorrow, so instead of delving too deep into it, I’ll be looking at his career and what I feel are his best performances so far to date. Fun, right? We’ll, here goes nothing! Quickly, a bit on the film itself.
