Did Netflix Ruin 'A Different World' With A.I.?
Image
Price hikes. Monthly content removals. First season cancelations. In some way or another, I’ve come to just ignore all those deplorable acts from Netflix. But they just had to up the ante, didn’t they? They were sneaky about it this time, too. Instead of doing something on the service itself (which every subscriber would eventually come to see), they put the worst of spins on a new addition to its content library. On February 7 — seven months after it was pulled from Max — A Different World was finally able to be streamed again thanks to Netflix.

Once I heard that all six seasons of The Cosby Show spinoff were available to watch (thanks to MovieWeb news reporter Heath McKnight), I went straight to my Roku and loaded up the Netflix app. You might think I was overreacting. It’s just a television show, after all. But for me, both...

'A Different World' is Now Streaming on Netflix as the Beloved Sitcom is Getting a Sequel Series
Image
All six seasons of the beloved TV series, A Different World, are now streaming on Netflix. The show debuted in 1987 and was a spin-off of the immensely popular The Cosby Show and season one starred Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable as she attended the fictional Hillman College, a Historically Black College (Hbcu) in Virginia. The show was willing to tackle issues such as HIV / AIDS, apartheid, domestic violence, and more.

Bonet left the show after the first season due to a pregnancy with Lenny Kravitz, and the focus turned to Dwayne Wayne, a math genius played by Kadeem Hardison, and Whitley Gilbert, played by Jasmine Guy. Despite the main character departing, A Different World grew in popularity and lasted six seasons until the show ended in 1993. Also, in the second season, Debbie Allen, producer and director and Howard University alumni, focused on making the show more authentic to an Hbcu experience.

Emmys flashback: Amy Sherman-Palladino (‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) was last nominated for ‘Roseanne’ 26 years ago
Amy Sherman-Palladino
Amy Sherman-Palladino is best known for creating “Gilmore Girls” and her current hit show, Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” But did you know she actually got one of her first big breaks writing during the original run of “Roseanne” for six seasons (1990-1994)? Sherman-Palladino (with Jennifer Heath) earned her first and currently only Emmy nomination in 1992 for Best Comedy Writing for the episode “A Bitter Pill to Swallow.” Coming full circle, Sherman-Palladino 26 years later will now have to compete against the “Roseanne” revival at the 2018 Emmys.

Sherman-Palladino earned the original “Roseanne” its Only Best Comedy Writing nomination. “A Bitter Pill to Swallow” deals with Becky (Alicia Goranson) asking Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) to take her to get birth control and her less than excited reaction. It was as funny as it was insightful, giving audiences a glimpse of the lightening quick and hilarious dialogue which would become “Roseanne’s” signature.

Feminism Flashback: Remember When the World Freaked Out About Murphy Brown?
-Aly Semigran

November 14 will mark 26 years since the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown hit the airwaves. The series, which ran for 10 seasons and won 18 Emmy Awards (including a record-breaking five Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series wins for star Candice Bergen), also happened to be at the forefront of a political firestorm in its heyday. A show about a 40-something single mother and career woman (!) touched such a nerve that the Vice President of the United States singled out the show as an example of the decay of family values in America.

During a campaign speech on May 19, 1992, then-vp Dan Quayle stated, “Failing to support children one has fathered is wrong. We must be unequivocal about this. It doesn’t help matters when primetime TV has Murphy Brown, a character who supposedly epitomizes today’s intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone...

Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana (2006)
Miley Cyrus signs on for more 'Hannah'
Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana (2006)
"Hannah Montana" will shine on.

Disney Channel has closed a deal for a fourth season of the blockbuster series starring Miley Cyrus.

Additionally, the cable channel has ordered a second season of its breakout new comedy series, "Sonny With a Chance," and has tapped Jeffrey Hornaday, choreographer of such movies as "Flashdance" and "A Chorus Line," to direct and choreograph the fourth "High School Musical" movie.

There had been questions about whether Cyrus would return to the series that made her a global star, with the teen actress-singer recently expressing her intention to continue her small-screen duties as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana for one more year.

As part of the deal, Cyrus will get a long hiatus to work on the feature "The Last Song," with production on the fourth season of "Hannah Montana" slated to begin next year. (Filming on the show's third season wraps this week.)

The series will change settings next season,...
